Final Cut Crashes on launch

All of a sudden my FCP app will not launch. It was working fine, then I shut down to work in Logic for a while. When I tried to relaunch it crashed and continues to crash repeatedly just as it's booting up.
Just before quitting FCP, I created a new custom sequence preset, and I'm thinking maybe it doesn't like that. But I'll be damned if I can find where the sequence presets are stored to try to trash that.
I've trashed the FCP prefs and run repair disk permissions to no avail.
I'll probably do a reinstall, but I'm on location and they're FedExing me the disks.
In the meantime I'd sure like to get this working again. Any ideas or help would be MOST appreciated.
thanks!

I am having the same problem, i have used FCP for years, I have not opened it for months. Just the other day, it will not open. even after trashing the prefs, when it starts up again, it asks you for a scratch drive then it crashes.. I have also tryed uninstalling FCP 5. installing 4.0 and 4.5 and it does the same thing.. I have seen several posting on this, So I know there are serveral people with this problem,, I hope someone can come up with a fix for this... soon.

  • Final Cut crashes on launch since installing Mountain Lion

I have installed OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro, and now whenever I try to open Final Cut Express (Version 4.0.1), my computer crashes. I have trashed preferences... any suggestions?

Unfortunately, FCE isn't supported by Apple's latest OS versions. Those who have tried report mixed results at best.
If you need to be on Mountain Lion, consider partitioning your systems drive, installing Snow Leopard and running FCE off that partition.
    Good  luck.

  • Final Cut Crashed and then corrupted the file. So Final cut wouldn't open up. I tried reloading the backup, trashing the prefs file, systematically going through the 3 previous versions and opening them by themselves one by one to no avail.

Final Cut Crashed and then corrupted the file. So Final cut wouldn't open up. I tried reloading the backup, trashing the prefs file, systematically going through the 3 previous versions and opening them by themselves one by one. I found Final Cut now loads but each of the backups and files in the previous 3 versions won't load. I've worked on the project for 3 weeks. Im suprised the backup files won't load either!?! I've only rendered 1 low res version. I am thinking I will have to rebuild the project in Final Cut 7. That is simply too risky to have all my back ups not load up!!

I'm a little confused by this?
Final cut now opens if launch older projects. But if I actually click on the project it crashes. Im not sure what you mean by events? I've moved them from the events folder.
but when I open up and of the projects the FInal Cut opens but then wont load the project even with no events in the FInal Cut Events folder.

  • Final Cut crashes on network users

I'm running into some strange problems with Final Cut 7 crashing on network users, but not local users. I am a teacher at a highschool. We have a 30 Imacs running OSX 10.5.8 We authenticate users through an Active Directory and I also have a Open Directory OSX workgroup server running 10.5.8. Students Logon through the active directory but their home folder is stored locally. Final Cut is installed locally as well
When Logged in as a Local user final Cut works fine. When logged in as a network user final cut will crash upon launch. This problem is solved by deleting the "Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs" File located in User/Library/Preferences/Final cut pro user data/ . However at next launch this file is rewritten and final cut pro will crash again.
So I'm thinking there must be a permissions problem with where Final Cut is setting the scratch disk. So I look at the scratch disk settings to find that nothing in selected or checked. Final Cut usually sets its default location for scratch disk in Users/Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents. The students have read/write access to this folder. So I set the scratch disk to their Documents, save a Project, and Quit. On relaunch Final Cut crashes.
I have tried setting a scratch disk as an administrator allowing full access to it, reinstalling Final Cut, verifying disk permissions, and shutting down the Open Directory Server. Nothing has worked.
So I opened the Final Cut Pro 7.0 prefs file with text edit and did as search for scratch. I found one paragraph that listed scratch a few times, but I did not find the name of any stored locations. With some trial and error I found that I can delete the word undoedit at the end of this paragraph. Lock the file and Final Cut will no logger crash. A scratch disk can be set inside Final Cut, however the location of the scratch disk is no logger saved and needs to reconfirmed upon relaunch. This is of course a temporary solution to my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the insight - I did a bit more searching and found that there was a hidden Midi preference set for the GNX, and there was also an old preference for it buried in system file - both are gone and
Voila! Final Cut is now open for business.

  • FINAL CUT CRASH - FIRE WIRE PROBLEM

Alright, this is just my last shot.
I use final cut pro 3 to edit videos, and a miniDV sony camera too. (I even bought new fire wire cables to double check the problem)
Always worked with them, no sweat.
But once I upgraded my iBook with the latest OS version TIGER, my nightmare started. My iBook is the second latest one, still on warranty .....
Final Cut crashes every time I open the LOG AND CAPTURE window. No way, it's impossible .... I tried to re-install the software. The only way (it seems really weird and odd) is to use iMovie to import them.
It's very crazy. I tried the same in a friends computer, and apparently is his, just works fine.

OHH Yes absolutly, I send my originals CD's to apple. I pay 49 dolars for the Crossgrade and Then I install everythiing. I have MY oun lisence all original. But I dont know what is going on.

  • Final Cut crash on 'Log and Capture' selection

    Hi guys,
So I have a BlackMagic Decklink Extreme card installed, and hooked up to a Sony J-3 DigiBeta Deck.
When I attempt to 'log and capture' final cut crashes before the capture window pops up. This happens on all setup's (10-bit/8-bit/JPEG) when I have device control turned on (RS-422). If I turn off device control, the capture window opens normally, and I can do a capture now, which is no good to me for logging purposes, or doing offline edits.
So, my question: Is the device control crashing Final Cut due to the fact that Im using an intel mac with Final Cut 5.0.4? Can anyone confirm this for me? Or is there something I can do to fix this? Has anyone experienced this problem?
Device control works outside Final Cut, in BlackMagic Deck Control, so I know its not a card issue.
Im still waiting on a copy of Final Cut 2, its in the pipelines... but in the meantime if there is a quickfix to this, help would be much appreciated, as Final Cut 5.0.4 is otherwise extremely stable for me...
    Thanks,

    Some background:
720x480 is a non-square format. It can either be the equal of 640 x 480 (4:3) or 954 x 480 (16:9) depending on what you tell your editing software the incoming stream will be.
If you told FCP the incoming stream is DV/NTSC 4:3 and you are getting a pillarboxed image, FCP is thinking you are sending it a 16:9 version and is filling the the sides to keep the aspect ratio correct.
It would help to know a whole lot more about settings within FCP and what your mixer is putting out.

  • Final cut crashes on render

    Please help!
I am using Final cut express for this project.  I created it on an Imac.
Specs: Quad Core; Intel Core I-7; 8GB Ram; 2.93 GHz.  Media is stored on an external HD.
Whenever I select render timeline, the window appears and shows me the progress.  But once I let it alone and leave the computer alone for anywhere from 3-10minutes, and I return, I am greeted with another window asking if I want to report this crash to Apple or reopen program.  What on earth could be going wrong?  I have used this imac before with no hassle at all when rendering, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to render be working now.
I have tried to render only a few minutes of the time line and it works okay without crashing, but when I select the 30minute project, it crashes within a few minutes.
Could it have anything to do with a screen saver?
    Any suggestions?

I've tried a few things to try and identify the problem, but none of them have helped.
For instance, I completely turned off the  screen saver. In the preferences, under power saver, I selected, computer sleep to "never"; Display sleep to "never"; I unchecked the "put the hard disk to sleep when possible."
And then I tried to only very small portion of the timeline.  The results were as follows:
At around 5 minutes, the final cut crashes.  I tried this process several times, and it seems to render up until the 5 minute limit and then crashes again.
Does anyone know what to do?

  • Final Cut Crashes when I try to export a batch list - help!

I'm doing a very large documentary project and each tape has extensive log notes. I use the batch list function to export tabbed text files and convert them to excel - very useful in the creative process when figuring out story structure etc.
But now every time I try to export a batch list final cut crashes - any ideas on how to get around this?
    please help.

Are you batch exporting the enrire project maybe?
Might try selecting just your capture bins and trying to batch export those. Could be a sequence or graphic file making it go kookoo.
If the sheer size of it is making FCP choke you could try selecting a single bin and then doing batch export. Do that for all your bins and assemble them in excel.

My problem is that all of a sudden final cut does not launch. I simply
click on either the project I am working on or from the appocation folder
and does not even open up. I trashed my preference, repaired disk permission and even reinstalled. Nothing happens. I wonder if I need to do a complete

  • HELP! Final Cut Crashes or Freezes on Export/Render System Kernel Panic

I am having issues with Final Cut on this computer since day 1 when I first purchased it! I do alot of video production for weddings and events and this is driving me nuts!
I have an Imac 2.16 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB 667mhz DDR2 SDRAM. The media is reading off of my external Firewire 800 1 TB Drive. Final Cut is version 5.1.4. Quicktime version is 7.4.5
I am editing an HDV project currently although I have had the same issue with other regular DV projects that have lengthy renders.
The current project is fairly simplistic in layout, with a white matte on the first video line, video and png stills on the second row each with a key around the edges to give a soft white border appearance on the video. PNG stills have motion settings.
The problem occurs when attempting to render the project. If attempting to render the entire project, the time states about 4 hrs (for a 30 min project). At around 18-25% the kernel error pops up asking the restart the imac. If I attempt to render in selections of about 10 minutes a piece, it also results in kernel panic. If I take smaller peices at a time and render and keep saving, I am able to slowly get through rendering the project.
Exporting the movie to quicktime as a self contained file, or even not self contained, also results in kernal panic about 40% of the way through.
I have read on various forums about this and it seems like everyone is thinking it may have something to do with quicktime. What could the problem really be? I'm going crazy! Is the Imac just not able to handle final cut?
    Thanks!

I've tried a few things to try and identify the problem, but none of them have helped.

  • Final Cut Crashes on startup "GNX4 editor" shows in info window

I recently bought Final Cut Express 4 - I had used Final Cut Studio on an identical machine at work (that was running OS 10.4) and it worked fine. The installation went perfectly, but when I try to launch the application, it loads almost completely - the menus appear at the top of my screen, the progress bar is progressing. In the status info field, it starts loading audio items, reaches one called GNX editor, stops there, and invariably the app. crashes before it can finish loading. Its rather frustrating! I tried installing the app on my identical work machine with OS 10.4 - works fine. On my OX 10.5 equipped machine, no go! Anyone else have the same problem, or know what's going on? I suspect it has something to do with my Digitech GNX4 audio input - but I did a clean install of OS X.5, on a blank drive, so none of the old drivers from that device should still be on this machine. Its very puzzling.
    Any assistance will be appreciated!

  • Final cut will not launch after fcs2 install (successful)

I have just installed FCS2 and unpon launching the software. It gives an option to relaunch but that doesn't work. I've tried searching in the threads and haven't gotten anywhere.
I just updated to Leopard doing about a month ago doing a clean install, not an erase and install.

    Thanks

Ok, here's what happened I needed the Pro Applications Update 2007-2, when I did a software update search it never gave that as an option. I had to discover it by looking through the error details and going in to the FCS2 section of Apples site and download it from there. I didn't even know that it would be the right update but it appears to be, Final Cut just loaded for the first time.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Final Cut Crashes on macbook pro, please help!

    Hi!
I just bought Final Cut Studio 3, but Im having some issues. Final Cut Pro 7 crashes at startup, everytime. Motion 4 crashes when I click on "file". Color and DVD studio works okay-ish (I havent tried them out extensively)
Could this be due to my macbook pro 4.1 not being good enough? I have 4 gb ram, 2,4 ghz, and I dont think it has integrated graphics, so it seems to pass all requirements.
Please help me! I paid lots of money for this program, so it would be a shame if I cant get it to work.

    Hi Mads,
These are the specs recommended by apple.

  • Final Cut Crash, crash and crash... I´m desperate!

Hi, I´m a teacher at a cinema school and also the IT manager. We have FCS2 installed in 5 20-inch iMac Intel Core 2 Duo (the most basic configuration from apple store) OS 10.4.11 up to date with all the updates until today (19dec) QuickTime 7.3.1 and FC 6.0.2.
While working (all the settings, codec sequence settings... are ok) FC keeps crashing at random times, not while doing something specific... just plain editing of a PAL DV sequence which is very short one, since they are exercises for the students to work with. I get the beach ball there forever (force quit don´t work) forcing me to physically shut down the computer the hard way
I´ve tried everything, fresh install of FCS2, reformatting the whole disk and reinstall the OS... not updating anything and just use it like out of the box... disconnecting the Ethernet cable, nothing... nothing and nothing... I´m really desperate since this is happening like 4-5 times per computer in a 2 hours class
I also have a Mac Pro with the same software and versions of it, but with a different OS (mac Os Server 10.4.11) in which everything is fine.
    Help please!!!

Right... the media is on a second partition of the internal HD, and for the other question i haven´t trashed anything.
the following is what i did
install -> update OS -> restart -> repair permissions -> restart -> install FCS2 -> restart -> repair permissions -> restart -> update FCS -> restart -> repair permissions -> restart -> use FCS -> crash Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
by the way... why do you say that is stupid to trash prefs? in many forums trashing prefs seem to be the almighty remedy for FCP strange behaviors

  • HT4589 Final Cut Pro wont launch anymore

I updated to the latest version of Final Cut Pro and now it wont launch.  the window comes up and all I get is a spinning colourful wheel as a cursor and no way to operate the software.

Could be a problem within one or more of your Events or Projects.
Move your Events and Projects to new (temporary) folders so that FCP X doesn't find them on launch.
If it launches OK, then quit the app and move the Projects back one by one (re-launching each time). The media will be offline (red clips) but if it launches OK, quit again, and move the Events back one by one - re-launching each time you move an Event.
This should isolate the offending Event - you can then use a similar technique to track down the individual file.
