Final cut dropped frames and image resolution

I am working on a project involving placing a logo image over the video (simple). I have done this before with great results. I am trying the same with another project and I get warned that one or more dropped frames may have occured in playback. If I export to movie to .mov from FCP the movie has an issue in this area. If I disregard and export using compressor the movie plays fine but the logo image gets messed up....What am I doing wrong? How do I get fcp to stop dropping frames? what is the best file format to import a image into fcp (I have used a .png as I need the clear background)? I doesn't seem like I used to get this warning of dropped frames before. I have repaired permissions. I am stuck now.

Also,
Would this have anything to do with importing movie as a .mov vs. the original .dv format?

When I tried to edit to tape after 10 or 20 minuts I have drop frame and FC stop edit. If I remove flag in the preferences of Drop Frame I see the drop frames video .
My storage is DDN S2A9900 with two controller in failover. Two MDC stornext 3.5.1 in failover 2 Fibre Switch Brocade 5100.

  • Final Cut Drops frames intermittently

    Hi all-
okay, heres my situation- In different fcp projects, I get dropped frames on the playback of my DVPAL, 16:9 sequence. I have captured this video directly from my camera in that format, onto my fw800 drive that is my scratch disk for capture, render etc. The dropped frames are occuring on things like text, a little bit of rendered material, between rendered material and just a simple fade in of another clip, cross dissolves, particularly (but not always) between video and free frames. The most worrying incident was a dropped frame within just a slide show of freeze frames taken straight from my dv video.
Have tried updating to 5.1.4 from 5.1. (Also 5.1.2 a few weeks ago)
Reformatting the FW800 drive and starting again
actually replaceing the drive inside the fw800 chassis which has an oxford 922 chip
reformatting the internal hdd of the laptop and reinstalling mac osx and fcp from scratch
it is osx 10.4.8 with qt 7.1.3
Ran a benchmarking tool with xbench and found my fw800 drive to have much faster access than my fw400 on my desktop system. To prove speed of fw800 drive i have had it play 8 videos at once in a single fcp sequence without render and it did not stutter.
have ran Activity monitor and hardware test
sooooo.....why should I be getting these random dropped frames, and how can I stop them?

You don't have Norton or any FileSaver/AntiVirus program running? Could your drives be spinning down? Fighting with Spotlight for drive access?

  • Exporting Final Cut Movie Frame as High Resolution Photo

    Hello everyone,
Is there a way to take a frame in a final cut movie and export it as a high resolution photo? My supervisor has taken some great video footage and would like to use parts of it to make a calendar. I've tried exporting in quicktime, but the highest resolution I get is 72 dpi.
Even if there's a 3rd party program that will do this if Final Cut won't, please let me know. Thank you!

There are any number of up-rez tools for Photoshop that do a pretty good job of creating pixels where none exist. Simply resampling at a larger size/pixel count often creates acceptable results. But, as stated, there are only a limited number of pixels available: whatever you shot with. If you shot with a fabulous high def (not HDV) camera, you might have as many as 1080x760 some odd pixels.

  • Final Cut Express HD and Animoto resolutions don't match

I imported a 720p video into Final Cut Express HD from Animoto.com (created online with Animoto and downloaded the MP4).
I added a song and a couple of bookend credits then exported to QuickTime Movie. The resolution of the FC export is significantly lower than the original MP4. Significantly lower. I've tried almost all the export settings in the "QuickTime Conversion" export, but nothing comes close to the resolution of the imported MP4.
Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong?

    Have a read here:

Sounds like your Easy Setup and clips are scrambled to me resulting in degraded footage.
BTW: MP4 should be transcoded to match an Easy Setup.
Codecs used in FCE are editing codecs, MP4 is for delivery.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Canon hv20

I'm currently working on Final Cut Studio 2 and I'm looking at buying a Canon HV20. I've looked into some threads on this one and it seems that people are having trouble with this camera on FC Studio 2. Is there anyone out there that can attest to smooth and efficient workflow with this set up? A major selling point for me is the 24p, tell me it works well, please tell me it works well.
    thank you,
    t r e y v o n

HV20 works perfectly at 24p in FCP 6.0.2.
Added advantage is that you can capture uncompressed (with HDMI card and fast drive/RAID) at much higher quality and resolution than HDV.
Quality is so good, you can create great 1920 x 1080 24p green screen shots (using 4:2:2 color space from HDMI) and dvMatte Pro 3.
The next step up to get better quality at 24p is around $5K-$6K range (I think?).
Here's a small image of a 24p frame shot on green screen with the HV20:

  • Dealing with dropped frames and out of sync audio

    Hi!
I'm using Final Cut Studio 3 and I'm trying to record some video from a pretty old MiniDV-camera. The problem is that a have some dropped frames and when I record the whole thing it gets out of sync.
By default Final Cut aborts the capture (without saving) when it finds dropped frames. That won't work for me. I start recording, it records a couple of minutes and then it just aborts without saving anything.
I tried to record the entire tape when using the option of not aborting on dropped frames. I recorded the entire video but not it gets more and more out of sync later and later in the video.
So, do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Maybe I can use an external application for this cause I haven't found a way to deal with this in Final cut.
    Best
    Felix

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you shoot in DV or HDV ?
Did you try to capture HDV with Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (or 50 for europe)?
Does you downconvert HDV shooted to DV upon capturing from camcorder ?
DV-NTSC 48 kHz is the way to go with downconverted material.
Does your DV audio setting is 16 bit on FX1 ? (HDV is a fixed one).

  • Question about Final Cut Pro X and miniDV's

    Hi,
I'm thinking in buying Final Cut Pro X and use it to import and edit many hours of footage that I have on miniDV's tapes.
I've heard that to work with miniDV's, Final Cut Pro X is not great, especially regarding timecode, etc. True?
Any thoughts and advises? Many thanks!

My experience is if you're shooting SD then you shouldn't have a problem unless you are trying to load a full hour. When I tried that, the computer went crazy and loaded the video as thousands of clips just a few frames long.
That was supposed to be for a multicam shoot. I went back to FCP 7 where I've never had a single problem after at least 80 multicam projects with as many as eight cameras.
I'll have to try it again in FCP X now that there have been two updates since my last try.
I've also used HDV mini DV tapes shot with a Canon HV40. The video looked great in FCP X and I had no problem with clips that were 2-3 minutes long.
I did not load my HDV clips as ProRes in FCP X because, when I did try it, they looked like total crap. I was afraid my finished exported video would also look like that.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and video app chaos

    Hi,
Did anyone find after installing Final Cut Studio 2 that their 3rd party apps to do with video extraction/conversion suddenly start to unexpectedly quit when in operation? It's a brand new MacPro, lovely machine until Final Cut software went and messed things up. I won't mention the trouble I had to install both Logic Studio and FCS since they both share similar components and included apps, Apple's installer is not designed to cope and I had to mess about with the receipts folder to get both installed. This page was available yesterday http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1110?locale=en_GB to give an insight of the problems between the two. Anyhow, I think the best solution is to remove Final Cut software as I'm not up for spending hours debugging.

I had a huge issue pop up with me too...and I figured the best way was to wipe the drive, install the OS and FCP from scratch. Took a day, but better than spending more time trying to figure things out.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic Studio on MacBook

I have a white MacBook bought in late 2008. It has a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor w/ 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
My question is: has anyone run Final Cut Studio 2 and/or Logic Pro with these specs? And how was it?
I was told performance would be weak. I was also told nothing could be done to improve the performance other than buy a MacPro or at the very least get a MacBookPro. I have no reason NOT to believe this but I am interested in a second opinion.

    Hi there,
Ignore the other posts, both run absolutely fine on a macbook! I use final cut studio 2 on a white macbook and so do about 10 of my friends almost without problem. Final cut works perfectly, dvd sp works perfectly, motion works perfectly, soundtrackpro works perfectly! the only problem i ever had was rendering with 'color', none of my other friends grade their videos so they have no problems at all. Are you going to do any grading?
I believe the macbook is not officially supported though, so I don't think you'll be able to get help from apple if there's any problem solving to be done. I've been using FCP and FCS for years now though and have honestly never had a problem I couldn't solve myself
Logic also runs amazingly well too.
    hope that helps

  • Final cut studio 2 and macbook pro 17?

I'm anxious to purchase Final Cut Studio 2, and a new MacBook Pro 17" laptop. Is FCS2 and this laptop 100% compatible? Will I be able to install and run FCS2 on this laptop successfully?
    Laptop specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Notebook 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, TI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor, dual -ink DVI support, 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, external 500G hard drive for video storage (firewire 800).
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well those that have tried running FCS 2 on a 17" laptop can't talk. It's not released yet...
However there is no reason why it shouldn't work well. Add an Io HD to the mix, and you'll edit HD on it all day long... we were showing this in the AJA booth at NAB a couple of weeks ago. Apple was running it too on laptops in their booth...
Figure it should be fine. With the advent of Pro Res, there's little you couldn't edit on a MBP... however there are some things you'll not be editing with it, such as 2 k files, or uncompressed HD. Pro res takes care of that though. It's really visually lossless.
