Final Cut edits integrated into Motion project

Hey folks,
I have edited my clips in FCP and added simple additive dissolves as transitions. When I send the sequence to a new motion project all of my transitions (dissolves) are not intact. How do I preserve these moving my sequence into motion?

Not exactly correct. Motion 3 preserves all of Final Cut's Motion tab properties, including scale, rotation, crop, dropshadow, etc. - including speedchanges.
What isn't preserved is filters (with the exception of the SmoothCam filter), transitions, and generators.
One solution is to keyframe opacity in FCP instead of using a cross-dissolve. Another is to use the fade in/fade out behavior in Motion.

  • What happened to Final Cut's integration with Motion??  Renders are hosed..

So is it just me? I have a HUGE project (1.5 hour bio/documentary) that is crashing Final Cut every time it tries to render or export. I was getting an error that said the crash could have been possible to a "ProGraphics plug-in." I can't locate any plug-in anywhere on any drive that's associated with "ProGraphics" at all. From what I gather it's something to do with Motion integration, causing problems with renders. Basically, I've used many Motion effects within my Final Cut sequences. They're nested everywhere, and were rendering just fine a few days ago (although I was still having issues with exporting). So basically I either need to wait for a fix, or go back and re-cut without the Motion graphics. Uggh. Disgusted and in need of a patch (or a drink).
My versions of all software are current, as is my operating system. I've done all updates and patches (I'm a versiontracker geek so I keep up with this stuff). I've deleted preferences, dumped all render files (that's when I figured out the rendering issues with Motion), rebuilt permissions, created a clean User Account, etc. I've done hardware tests on the drives and RAM. I'm out of options.
Can anyone from Apple confirm that there are indeed issues with this, just to reassure me that I'm not going insane?
    Thanks.

Try searching the forums for that ProGraphics term., might find something that helps.
Chances are you lost or damaged a system-level hook in one of your recent efforts to stay up to date. Most of us would not update QT or the pro apps until big projects are out the door or securely backed up. We often print to tape or export a completely flattened movie before running major upgrades to the Mac OS.
However, I just popped open an old FCP project that has some Motion work in it from about 8 months ago. Everything hooked right up and some tests rendered okay.
Huge projects with delicately nested elements need careful workflow decisions. I try to pre-render or use proxies where ever possible. Hard lessons learned over a decode of After Effects work. Hope you get better advice but searching for the ProGraphics error term will get you results faster.

  • Final Cut Server - Roundtripping to Motion Projects stopped working

I Checked Out a Final Cut Pro project from FC Server. Selected a clip on the Timeline and chose Send To Motion Project. I save that Motion Project in  Device folder.
FC Server creates an Asset out of the Motion Project. I used to be able to Check Out that Motion Project from FCServer but now the Check Out Option is greyed out.
    Any help?
    Thank in advance!

Here is what worked for me:
I searched for anything Final Cut (including sys files). I then found an old file called:
    Final Cut Express 3.5 Prefs.fcset
This is an old file from 3.5.0 and although I did try to start 3.5 under Leopard just to see what it did, I never actually opened it. But I guess it was enough to initiate the file being created.
Anyway, when I deleted this file, everything opened fine. I think that 3.5.1 was reading the old 3.5 pref file and since 3.5 won't work under Leopard it was preventing FCE from opening.
That is what I THINK. I can't prove it. But I can prove that once I deleted this file, FCE opened fine.
This is the only file I changed.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • I can't import any files or folders into Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 projects

I can't import any files or folders into Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 projects. When I select import and then either files or folders, I am able to navigate to the drive where the media is being stored, but then when I scroll to locate the files or folders the drive disappears. This problem began as an intermittent problem, but now I cannot import any files or folders. This problem started when I upgraded my operating system to Yosemite version 10.10.2 on my mid-2010 Mac Pro running with 16 GB of memory and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card. Can anyone help me figure out and solve this serious problem? Thanks!

Then just drag the files/folders from your hard drive into FCP.  Don't use the IMPORT option...just drag and drop.
The problem started when you installed an OS that doesn't support FCP 7.  So if you want things to work smoothly, it's best to go back to an OS that did support FCP 7. Yosemite was written without taking FCP 7 functionality in mind, so it isn't fully functional. It might not do one thing for someone...but works for you in that respect. But then you can't do something else. The ways it doesn't work is always random.  Or it might work great for some people, because they don't use functions that might no longer work....so they don't notice it.

  • Ok, I thought I could do a project in my new Final Cut Pro X. I got everything downloaded on Final Cut and I made my Project. The problem is is has taken so long to render that I don't have time. How do I download the video from Final Cut to Imovie?

Your media is stored in Final Cut Events folder > "name of event"  > original media. The Final Cut Events folder is in your movies folder or at the root level of an external drive if you are using one to store your media. Simply open iMovie and under file menu select import movies. Navigate to the original media folder and import your clips to Imovie event library.

The GPU in a iMac is NOT upgradeable.
You should check to see if your model of iMac meets the minimum specs to run FCPX.
I believe that your GPU is NOT OpenCL capable, and hence not supported.
Even if it works, you would probably get marginal performance.
What you can do is download the trial version and see how (and if) it works.

  • Do I need to have final cut pro to use motion?

Do i Have to have final cut to use motion or can i use imovie?

You don't need Final Cut to use Motion but you can't create transitions/effects for iMovie either. You can use Motion to create to composite effects on/with video clips and export the finished work as clips for use in iMovie. So in that respect, you can use iMovie. Motion should make most of the work convenient. You'll need to make sure that the clips you import and the project length are the same (or shorter if you intend to trim the clip in Motion). For transitions, titles, and effects, you can drag clips into the provided "drop zones" for the project type (if you were using FCPX, you would generally leave these "empty" as those drop zones are filled automatically by what exists in the fcpx timeline.)
You'll have to adapt your workflow modestly, but I think you'll find that Motion will be a big help to you. I know people who edit entire (short) videos in Motion. It's an outstanding deal (just expect a bit of a learning curve - but there's a lot of free tutorial material around on the net.)  I personally don't recommend that you use Motion to edit video in exclusively, it isn't designed for that (and typically will not play video with a lot of special effects at full speed...) It is a video *compositing* application; more like a "photoshop" for video.

  • Problem Final Cut Pro 5 and Motion 2

Using the video from the original tutorial and when I import the Motion Project back into Final Cut Pro the video comes in the incorrect size I checked to insure it is 720x480 and that Anamorphic is on - but the width is still off by sexeral pixels.. Comments .. Help Please...

My guess is that if you created the project in Motion, it uses the standard .9 pixel aspect for DV. FCP uses the non-usual-but-still-within-guidelines .89 - try changing that in your Motion project and see what happens...

  • Do you need final cut pro to use motion 5?

I was wondering if I can just download Motion 5 and not final cut pro x?

No, you will need to either export a copy of the clip in your iMovie library, or you can use the Finder. Exporting is easiest and safest.  If you want to use the original media, locate your iMovie Library and right click on it.  Select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu.  Find the folder for your project, open it and then look for a folder called "Orginal Media" this is where your clips are stored.  DO NOT MOVE THESE CLIPS.  From here you can drag clips into Motion's Layer List or canvas and work with them.  Just remember, don't change or move files inside your library.

  • Can I open a Final Cut Express HD 3.5 project in Final Cut Pro 5.04?

    Hello,
I've been working on a new project in Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and now want to import into my Final Cut Pro 5.04 but when I try to do so I get an error message telling me the file type is too new and non-compatible. Is there a way round this? I would have normally tried to import an XML from FCE but that does not seem to be an option.
    Any help is appreciated.

if you know someone with 5.1.4 they should be able to open it then get you an XML for 5.0.4

  • Final Cut hangs with "Loading Motion Content" when opening library

When opening one of libraries I almost immediately get a beach ball and see "Loading Motion Content" under "Rendering" in the Background Taks window. Final Cut hangs and I am forced to restart. I don't have any version of Motion and this problem just appeared in this library.
Any suggestions? I've used Preference Manager to trash preferences to no avail.

I followed the procedure suggested by Luis Sequeira1 in several other threads and deleted the flexolibrary. I no longer see any "Loading Motion Content" message when opening the library and the it seems to be ok, with all the media, multicam clips, compound clips, and projects as expected.
    I have three questions:
    1) What information does the flexolibrary contain?
    2) How is Final Cut able to recreate a flexolibrary?
    3) Might deleting the flexolibrary be a way to solve all sorts of problems with libraries?

  • Can't import Final Cut XML file into Premiere Pro CS4 MAC

Hello,  I'm traying to import FCP Studio 2 XML file into Adobe Premiere Pro CS4for the purpose of then color correcting the project in Adobe After Effects.
I followed all the rules of exporting XML files from my Final Cut Studio 2 timeline, then closed FCP, opened Adobe Premiere CS4 and when I go to Import option XML file is greyed out.  I can't select the XML file...
Could  someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Thank you so much

I'll just say that the high end AE users list I frequent suggests that the more common workflow is to bring AE to FCP for color correction.  Isn't that one of FCP's strengths?
Also, to the extent that you want to process an FCP project in AE, look for the best way to bring it directly, not through Premiere.  Ask in the AE forum what opinions people have.  Mac and PC types use AE, but my impression is that only a small proportion of those users use Premiere.

  • Completely confused by Final Cut x Libraries, Events and Projects???

    Hi,
I realise there are lots of different explanations about this topic but still, none of them make sense to me in that, no-one seems to eb able to properly explain the differences between these things and when I follow the guidelines I can never seem to find the video I was working on.
First of all, I have absolutely no idea what 'Libraries' are in Final Cut X
I have used FC7 but forgot everything because X is so different, so I am basically a complete beginner.
When I start a completely new video from scratch I go file>new event> and title it 'whatever footage' for example. I then import all of my footage from that day.
Within that 'Event' I go file>new>project and called it 'whatever' music video, for example.
That way, my 'event' is the whole collection of footage. My 1st project is a music video using that footage and then I have the freedom to create new 'projects' like 'behind the scenes' etc. from said footage.
Yet, whenever Ive done this and come back to FCX  I can never ever find my original video timeline with all my editing. Events seem to be a mixture of everything ive ever imported and projects are nowhere to be seen.
Due to the lack of being able to just simply save a project, there doesn't seem to be a concise list of past projects anywhere to choose from?
Can someone please tell me what Im doing wrong or their standard order of workflow? And what the difference between each of the above items are?
Libraries, Events, projects - totally confused!???
many thanks and please pardon my ignorance, just very frustrated by this.
    Ash

I can show you an example of a standard workflow.
Lets say I am booked to edit 3 Movies for a client. A Music Clip, an Interview, a behind the scenes clip.
Lets say worst case you get everything  in a single folder.
First thing I do is creating a library in FCPX where all the footage (also future generated media, Logos, Photos) will go in.
Now you can create three different events in the browser for each video you are going to edit.
Start ingesting your footage to the different events. (You will see the option in the second window after you’ve selected the clips to import.)
Now you have your library where everything has been imported to but also three events with assigned material.
    Selections from the library.
If you want to start with the interview click on the appropriate event, create a project (which will be your timeline) and start editing.
Duplicate your project to keep backups and alternative edits.
Same thing for the Music Clip. Import your Audio, Animations, Graphics to the event. Create projects and save versions.
The next thing you should do is creating keywordcollections in your events to keep your material in order. These are like bins in FCP7
but much more powerful. For example you can add the same clip to several keywordcollections.
The internet should be full of examples by now. I won’t go further.
Now you start with the behind the scenes and at one point you want add Footage from the other events to your behind the scenes event.
Choose the clips you want to use and drag them (holding alt) to your event. You may have created a keywordcollection named footage for behind the scenes e.g. while keywording for the other two videos. This keywordcollection will be imported to the third event.
The clips will not be duplicated on your harddrive since they are in the same library. Events are selections from the library just the same as keywordcollections are selections from an event and a project (the timeline) has selections from keywordcollections.
Its up to you and your “job” how fine you want to organize your material. I would always suggest to create a library for every new job coming in.
Or at least for every new client. For bigger projects you want to create events for each day or even libraries for each day.
There is much, much more to say about libraries e.g. that you can leave your files where there are, letting the library refer to them.
Its a great concept and you are able to manage your material in FCPX like in no other NLE.
Watch tutorials on youtube or buy some from licensed trainers like ripple training for constant quality.
    Good luck

  • Can you convert a final cut edited video to a PC friendly version

My daughter edited a school project in Final Cut but sent her project to a PC user which he can not open. We have tried to convert it via email but got the spinning wheel of death. What can we do?

LBFA, select "Share" > "Master Files" (or command E) and export the master edit.  Download MPEG Streamclip (Squared5 software) and open the resulting master in MPEG Streamclip and convert it to AVI.
Another option is to upload your edit to Vimeo or YouTube and have the classmate play it back streaming.  If this comes up often, Telestream makes Flip4Mac in a variety of versions from free to pro.  The pro version is either $49 or maybe $149 and it enables solutions that include WMV plugin for Compressor, etc.

  • Final cut pro x importing imovie project

I have iMovie '11 and am trying out Final Cut Pro X's trial version.  Final Cut Pro X will not successfully "import iMovie Project."  Two things happen: 1) It starts the import of the iMovie Project but only reaches the point where it shows video outline in dark grey with no acual video imagery and 2) shuts down Final Cut Pro X with a follow on option to "Report, Ignore" to Apple.  I've reported it, but would like to know if anyone is having the same issue and if there is a fix.  I have just the Trial Version to see if I wish to buy, but if functions are not working properly I won't buy it.

I have the full version and I can't get iMovie '11 projects to import into FCPX.  I have tried everything I can think of.  The import progress bar starts, then it crashes.  Anyone with instructions on getting in it please help.  I am migrating stuff to my new MBP and the iMovie stuff is recognized by the iMovie on the new MBP.  The iMovie events did import into FCPX fine however.
