Final Cut Events on second drive

Hi,
I don't want the Final Cut Events folder to my main drive. Is it possible to have it on a second?
Olof

You can put them anywhere you want or move them around see http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/

  • All final cut events, projects disappeared from external hard drive

I had a re-start this morning and the event I was working on lost its purple box and its white star. Can't find the project, can't find the event.
Even more troubling, the Final Cut Events and Library folders on my external hard drive is also gone. Really need some help here. Any ideas?

It almost looks like all of the original media is gone.

  • No audio for some files in the Final Cut Event/Original Media folder

Hi, recently, I noticed that some of the video files stored into the Final Cut Event/"Event"/Original Media folder had no audio. They do have audio when I read them into FCP X but not when I open them as ordinary files in the Finder. It worries me as it makes these files unusable in any other application, unless I "share" them from FCP X. It's no big deal but it's more work and on the principle, it's criminal: why FCP X would strip the audio off an original? Video and photo applications now work on the non-destructive principle!
I usually shoot videos with a DSLR (Canon 550D/T2i) and a GoPro 3. It seems that the files impacted are the ones shot with the Canon and optimized for FCP X. The GoPro files are fine, optimized or not.
Is there any solution to this problem or will I have to export the files from FCP X?

Thank you very much for the info.
I removed the Media Cache and Media Cache File folders.  Didn't seem to make any difference.  Also, there's no audio if I try to play it in Organizer.
I have a question regaring "import".  What exactly does that mean?
Since all my MTS files are on hard drive already, what I did was:
    1) Open a new project in PE9.
    2) In the "Organize" tab, click "Get Media"
    3) Choose "Get Videos/Photos/Audio from: Files and Folders".
    4) In the pop-up window, navigate to my folder and choose the existing MTS file.
    Was that called "import"?
    Thank you again!

  • FCP X does not recognize Final Cut Events folder

FCP X will always recognize both internal drives in my MacPro, named Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD2.  About one third of the time it will see that both are present, but for Macintosh HD2 it will say there are no Events or Projects or anything else there for FCP X to read.  After rebooting anywhere between 1 and 5 times it will recognize the Final Cut Events folder that is actually there and let me get on with my work.  I have never changed anything about the folder manually or outside of FCP X, and it's not like it never recognizes the folder.  It is only about a third of the time that it will not recognize it.
So I have a couple questions:
Is there any way to point FCP X to the events folder on a specific drive that it thinks is not there so I don't have to keep quitting FCP X and rebooting?
Is this a bug that others have had and Apple will address or is it something about my hard drive?
It only happens to one drive, the other internal drive is fine, and all external drives and drobos have been perfect.  Could it be that the drive in question is only 5400 rpm?

If Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folders are on your internal drive, make sure they are in the Movies folder.  This is where they are installed by default when on the system drive it seems.  If on an external or non-system drive put them at the top level of the drive.
Then (IMPORTANT), if you have them on more than one drives at the same time, Final Cut Pro X can get confused IF you have the same event names and project names in these two folders on both drives.  It's probably best to put them only on one drive to troubleshoot your problems.  Then, once that is resolved, you could have the Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folders at the top level of two drives but with differning events and projects within them.  It should have nothing to do with a drive being a 5400 rpm.  The timeouts for reading drives for an application are much slower than the rotational speed of the drive.  IMHO. Best wishes.

  • Final cut events has the date 24 jan 1984

On one of my external Drobo drives that i back up events and projects, my final cut events, projects folder has the date 24 jan 1984 and its greyed out - i seen to be able to copy to it but cant seems to open it…any ideas?  FCPX 10.0.9

This has been reported several times in iPhoto '11 version 9.1.2 - it appears to be a bug - the only reported workaround that has been posted is to correct the dates on the photos and create a new event with them - try flagging all of the photos in the bad event after the dates are correct and then create a new event from the flagged photos
You can search the forums to see the other discussions
I would expect a correction in a future upgrade

  • Final Cut Event and Final Cut Project

I am in the process of trying to clean up one space. While doing this I noticed the I have a Final Cut Project and Final Cut event  of the same name as you can see below in the screen shot below. Is the event part of the project. The project was created prior to my upgrade to Yosemite.
Everything was created in Final Cut Pro X

Hi. Please take a look at this Apple support doc. – particularly the two sections, "is media duplicated…" and "Can I delete…"
In short, removing the folders will remove clutter, but any additional space savings will be small.

  • "Final Cut Events/Projects" folders missing

So I upgraded to Mavericks over the weekend and things were going great for a while. I wasn't experiencing any of the known issues that other people were experiencing after the upgrade.
But then I clicked the Movies tab in finder and realized that my "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" are missing! The backups folder is still intact, as well as my libraries, but those folder are missing. I've searched thoroughly around my MacBook and cannot locate them.
So I guess I'm wondering: is there away to recreate these folders? I can still access events and projects from within Final Cut Pro but the only way to get to the events or projects is by right-clicking on a library in the Movies tab and selecting the "Show Package Contents" option.
This is my first post on the forum because I am literally puzzled and have spent many hours searching for a solution to no avail. Any and all help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mark, thanks for lending a helping hand. Truthfully, I don't rememeber that option when I upgraded. There was nothing too important in the folders, as I store the larger projects on my Time Capsule and try to delete old events as I complete the projects. However, when I now import footage, the events are only created in the designated FC library. Those folders don't exist on my computer anymore and they are not in the trash. Is there a way to recreate the folders or did I completely ruin FC? Thanks again for your help, it means a lot.

  • Why does final cut x copy events even when the copy files to final cuts events folder is unchecked

When I import iMovie (v 9.04) events into Final Cut Pro X (v 10.0.2) it always copies (duplicates) the events even though the "copy files to Final Cut Events folder" import preference is unchecked. I do not want to duplicate 1 TB of data for no reason. Is this a bug or is the feature badly mislabeled? Can I impot iMovie events without duplicating them?

You shouldn't expect the FCP events folder to be twice the iMovie events folder. While the .dv files (or whatever the media are) are duplicated, the iMovie Movie Cache and iMovie Thumbnails folders are not. Instead, FCP creates a Render Files folder and a CurrentVersion.fcpevent file.
To compare one event, iMovie had a Thumbnails folder of 681.3 MB and a cache folder of 587 KB.  In contrast, FCP created a Render Files folder of 45 MB and an CurrentVersion.fcpevent file of 2.1 MB. So, the FCP foder is 634 MB smaller than the iMovie folder for the one event. But don't take my word for it, just compare pairs of events yourself.  You will see the media in the Original Media folder and it will be exactly the same as the media in the iMovie folder. Since you have the media, there is no reason to worry about deleting the iMovie folder.
Now I have no way of knowing if this is true, but is it possible that FCP duplicated events until it ran out of disk space? While the FCP events folders are a bit smaller than the iMovie events folders, it may not be enough to have made everything fit. And keep in mind that it takes a while for the Render Files folders to be generated. After I imported 50 events (about an hour of video each), it took a few hours for FCP to finish generating the Render Files folders.  I watched the entire Final Cut Events folder grow by several GB while that was going on.
In short, just compare pairs of events to reassure yourself that the media are in both places.

  • Final Cut Pro X - Resource Drives Missing

Final Cut pro X is unable to simultaneously access multiple mounted Firewire 800 drives in a chain...  While internal drives are always accessible...
    http://youtu.be/MNCfTsxJUcw
Any ideas, reasons, and/or solutions are appreciated...

On any of those 5 drives you tested Tom did you by any chance have an EXACT duplicate event folder?  Because in my case FCPx will display exact copys of PROJECTS on two drives but it will NEVER display two exact copys of EVENT folders.
If I unmount a drive it will show the events on the remaining drive.  If I unmount  the drive FCPx just fininshed using (and finding the event folder) and remount the second drive FCPx will then see the event folder and happily use that data.  FCPx will NEVER display both event folders if they are both mounted.
If it was a problem with the Firewire bridge as you claim then I would not expect FCPx (or for that matter even OSx) to be able to see both project folders at the same time.
Screen capture shows two drives.  Finder can display both Project AND Event folders.  FCPx can display both project folders but will only display ONE drives Event folder at a time  .....  ???

  • Final Cut Pro X - second document cannot be opened

Help  !   I have a very irritating problem I cannot get rid of.
Every time I open FCPX  I get an error  message (below).
Mac Pro Desktop,  RAID0  6TB array,   3TB  backup drive   (also internal)   (i.e. we have four 3TB drives,  3 form the array,  one is the backup )
We are using a disk synchronizer to keep all our critical filess mirrored on the backup drive,  therefore for whatever reason  final cut sees two copies of the same events.
We can remove the events from FCP,  but it also dumps the backup files in the trash.  As soon as the synchronizer runs,  all the events re-appear and the warning re-appears.    Idiocy.
Is there any way to get FCP to "forget" the secondary backup drive and not inventory it ?      We have played with every setting and wasted two hours on this already -   we cannot get rid of this stupid problem.
Anyone have a similar experience and advice on how to get rid of it ??
As a result of all this too, I have no idea what files we are working on - the ori
    Thanks, M

I found the answer on this forum,  although its a pathetic one.  Apparently Apple does not have a way to de-list events from its own software, so you have to use a plug-in called Event Manager X
I love Apple,  but come on ... seriously.. ?     Very kludgy if you ask me....

  • How to "Move" final cut pro to external drive.  When I drag it duplicates the application. can I just delete the application on the MacBook?

I want to "Move" Application Final Cut X Pro to my external hard drive but when I drag it only copies it.  Can I delete it from the hard drive now.

  • Using Final Cut off a Hard-drive

I'm still learning the ropes with Final Cut Express 4. I'm using Final Cut on two separate computers and want to be able to work back and forth on the same project. Basically I want to have the entire project on a hard drive that I can transfer back and forth with. Looking into it, I'm seeing that the actual project is only a few KB, and the footage and audio is buried in a FC Express folder in my Movies folder. How do I set it up that the entire project is on a hard drive?

You move the media to an external drive and reconnect the project to the media. You take the external drive from one machine to the other and take the project with it.

  • Error Symbol on Final Cut Event

    Hi,
I have been working on my FCP project and then realized there's a error symbol sitting on my FC event.
    See the attached image.
I was scared so I browsed clips in that event folder and see if there're any broken links. I didn't see anything wrong.
I played my project that's using this event. It works fine too.
Don't know if anyone know how to figure out where problems are exactly.
I worked on my video on an external hard drive. I do backup my files to another external hard drive as well.
I check the event from the other external hard drive and it has no such error symbol.
I am thinking to copy that event over to the drive where I'm actually working. See if this will solve the problems.
As I do backup, I haven't done restoring the files over for FCP projects.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Tom, Thanks for your feedback.
this thing annoy me the whole day.
    i dont know what's missing.
i just copied the files over from my another external backup drive to that event folder.
i thought this would solve the problems. when i opened FCP again, the error symbol is still there.
    do you have any ideas?
event is just a folder to store clips. if clips not in use are missing, this shouldn't have any error symbols.
if they are used by the project, the error symbol should appear in the project folder.

  • Just purchased Final cut Studio, but DVD drive wont boot the install disk

I really need some help. I have an older G5 2.0 with 6 gigs of ram, and about 500mb of hardrive. Im running OS X 10.4.9. I just purchased FCStudio HD, but cant get the install disk to boot. My computer doesnt even read it. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some setting I should change?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   My First Mac

I'm sure your drive size is a typo. You'll need a much larger drive if it's accurate.
Some install DVDs are unreadable and must be replaced.
But some older G4s and G5s had optical drives that could not play some newer DVDs. I can't tell you much more than that, I don't recall the details and the topic hasn't come up for many months. Try searching the forum?
Hope you're going to NAB, take some of the FCP classes.

  • Final Cut Pro External Hard Drive

Ok, here is my question when using an Imac.
I, of course use the firewire port to import the video to the computer, but what type of external hard drive should I use with the program? I was told the best way to do editing with an Imac is with an external hard drive. Are there any recomendations?

    See... Didn't take long...
Of course, you can use them for data storage and backups. But, I have used them very successfully for editing too. I like the fact that it leaves the FW port open for cameras, etc... No daisy chaining required.
Apple recommends against a lot of things, so if you're into that koolaid, no worries. My experience has been good with them, however, and for editing. There's no reason why USB2.0 won't handle most editing tasks that don't involve more than a few streams.
    Good luck!
    Best,
    Ben
