Final Cut Express (-10 +10 Notes)

I have been editing a short video (20 mins) and have noticed that there are now some red numbers in the video and audio timelines. The video timeline has -10 at the front of the first clip and the audio has a +10. Can anyone tell me what this is and what I can do to synchronize the the two.

Ian - My mistake I tried again an it looks like your suggestion has solved most of the problem. Now I only have a portion of audio clip that was edited and now has +10 next to it. The audio clip in question is half way through the video clip and does want to link. Any suggestions?

Upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard and final cut express 4 will not work

upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard and final cut express 4 will not launch but my final cut express HD 3.0 version comes up. I reinstall my final cut express 4 upgrade disc and it still will not launch.
Where do I go from here?

You installed from the discs, right?
What happens when you try to launch? What are you doing to launch and what happens you do it? Can't see you computer from here. If you probably need to contact Apple with an installation issue on a new computer.

Final Cut Express scratch disk not found.

I launch up final cut express and then it says "one or more scratch disks couldn't not be accesed." and it siad that it was the final cut express documents folder so I went on that and put all the permissions on read and write but it still said the same thing. Then it said it's location was the trash but nothing was in the trash so now I am very confused.

Your Default Scratch Disc setting is Macintosh HD>Users>Home>Documents>Final Cut Express Documents.
This is where all stuff goes unless you change your FCE>System Settings>Scratch Disc Tab.
Open the FCE System Settings>Scratch Disc, the top line, with the check marks, are where current captures go to.
If you decide to rename clips etc. do so within the FCE application and not through the Finder as the later will loose the links and FCE will have to re-connect.
If you right click a clip in the Browser or Timeline you will see the Reveal in Finder option, this will show you the file path to where the clip is located on your system.
If you see a red slash through the name, it's Offline and the path has somehow been broken. Reconnect it.

MPEG 1 to MPEG 4 then file import to final cut express ?? Not happening

Hello, I am complete newbie ! I have mpeg 1 files I am trying to edit. Final Cut won't allow me to import.
Used Handbrake to convert MPEG 1 to MPEG 4 , still would not allow me to import.
What to do ?

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your MPEG1 videos to either QuickTime/DV-NTSC or +QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.+
Also make sure you select the matching *Easy Setup* in FCE before you create the sequence you want to edit these videos in. This is so the sequence settings match your clip properties when you import the converted files.
Handbrake is not the right app for this purpose.
Also, I highly recommend that you get a copy of Tom Wolsky's excellent book Final Cut Express Editing Workshop and watch the tutorials on Izzy Video

Final Cut Express 4.0 - Not actually doing deinterlacing....

I've selected it many times, tested and tested and tested, rebooted, restarted... still checked the 'deinterlace source footage' does NOT seem to be doing it's job in Final Cut Express 4.0 when I try to export using Quick Time Converter.
thoughts/comments/Recommendations? My video is always interlaced and fuzzy !
Funny thing is that it worked yesterday.

Final Cut Express does not support 24fps video, and never has. And it cannot convert 24fps to other frame rates. If you try using 24fps material in FCE you will get unpredictable behavior, as you have experienced.
You would have to convert 24fps material outside FCE before importing the video. It may also be possible to use Nattress Standards Conversion however using that in FCE requires some undocumented workarounds.

Final Cut Express 4 will not launch on my Mac

I have a mac OS X 10.5.8 and I have bought final cut express 4 but it will not launch on the computer. Please help.

There are solutions on this forum, search "Final Cut Express won't open," for some of them. Updating to FCE 4.01 is one solution. For HD it is another.

Final Cut Express timeline & view not working

I seem to have locked my Final Cut Express project. The timeline has hatchmarks and I can't doubleclick on a clip (photo) and have it appear in viewer. I don't know what I have done. i need to edit some of the motion in the photographs. Any suggestions?

On the left hand side of the timeline, click on the lock symbol to unlock the track.

Final Cut Express 4 - Can not display CANVAS or TIMELINE

In just one of my projects the Canvas and Timeline doesn't appear.
Window>Arrange>Standard does not affect this. Selections for Canvas and Timeline are all grey'd out. My Browser window shows the tabs for my sequence and Effects tab. Clicking or double clicking this doesn't help.
Think I must have used some combination of keys to get in this spot. Other projects are not affected. Is there a set of keys that I need to use.

I am presently doing a 'render all' that will take 45 minutes. I thought more of what you said. Since I have not worked on this project in 6 months. (Somewhere along the line I decided to do an iDVD Archive and had deleted the original FCE project. I did have the ability to rebuild everything until I discovered that I had lost my TimeLine and Canvas.
I thought this was because I had hit some function key by mistake and therefore Timeline and Canvas were lost. In rebuilding, tonight, from an Document>Final Cut Documents> Autosave I was able to go to one of these version. Almost all the input, photos, video clips from old clips, iTunes, etc came back as "not connected" I deleted all those "bins" and File>Import>folder to those items. It turns out my Sequence was under a BIN and when I deleted that bin by TimeLine and Canvas disappeared.
Now I have renamed the BIN so as to contain the Sequence 1, for the project.
It turned out so far to be quite painless. Did learn the importance of the Sequence and its relationship to TimeLine and Canvas. Although I must admit I don't understand that relationship?
Rendering now says 2 hours for completion. It is almost enough to think about investing the grand to go to Final Cut Pro (not something I can convince my wife as she thinks I spend far too much time on this stuff.
Again, thank you for jogging my memory to think about previous versions such as the remark to use the AutoSave feature of FCE. As a side note I set that to every 15 minutes just a few days ago. I often get sidetracked and forget what I am doing and need the extra protection of what FCE does for me without me thinking about it.
I will leave this open until I know the above procedures worked. Still doesn't explain deleting a Sequence deletes the Timeline and Canvas. Any explanation on that? Thank you so much - now I will be able to sleep without worrying about this.

Hi guys. I contacted apple support and have managed to solve this problem. For anyone else experiencing this issue the solution seems to be to recreate the proFX.framework folder in the library folder. This is an OS installation problem rather than a FCE installation problem, as you so rightly identified. The apple tech sent me a zipped framework folder which has now solved the problem. Thanks for all your help.

Canon HV10 Not Recognized By Final Cut Express HD

Final Cut Express will not initialize my new HV10. iMovie has no problem downloading so I do not believe it is my computer, a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. Anyone know if this a problem with the software?

Not only Canon HV10,
my Sony HCR-HC3E also has this problem.
The quality of footage after capture is very poor.
When I use iMovie to capture the footage,
iMovie show that it is using the codec 1080i25.
Final Cut Express HD has not provide this codec,
only has 1080i50 and 1080i60.
I have ask about this, the feedback is that there is no
codec that call 1080i25.
How can I do?

Trouble making the text in scrolling credits (made on Final Cut Express) export clear and not fuzzy

I am having difficulty making the text in the scrolling credits in Final Cut Express clear and not fuzzy. I went under effects, then clicked video generators, then text, then scrolling text to get the scrolling credits working. I tried using the Chroma Keyer effect and the Color Key Effect. These work on captions on video and beginning titles but not the scrolling text. All of those were made on livetype so maybe that is why. I would really appreciate some help. I've been working on this all day. I was on the technical support line for about 40 minutes and they told me there is no more help given over the phone for Final Cut Express and that I should go on here and see if anyone can answer my question. I looked on all the forums and there was nothing on this subject. Thanks.

The software is not doing what it should be doing. We have all had this type of problem. It is nearly always somehow in the way the software is being used. Look at your added Chromakey and color key. You must be doing something that the FCE does not like. Open a new project and new sequence and try the exact same thing. (I use titles from LiveType and from the effects tab and have no problems)

Final Cut Express HD transfer from Intel to new Retina MacBook Pro

Final cut express HD will not open on new macbook retina using my intel version serial number. Do I have to purchase it again!!?

RAM may be an issue, if you can upgrade it that may help.
Also, make sure all your Media is on an External Hard drive. It's not a good idea to have your media reading off the same drive as your Application.
You could also try Trashing your Preferences and see if that helps.

The Apple Store does not show does not contain purchase information of the old unused Final Cut Express. What can I do to register Final Cut Express 2 will not operate in the current OS systems on my iMac. It only is compatible with the G3 or G5.

Final Cut Express Quit Unexpectedly

On a brand new install directly from the DVD - Final Cut Express 4 quits on opening. Tried to clean preferences, install again, update software...

Having trouble reinstalling Final Cut Express after uninstall with FCS remover.
