Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of the included video effects for Final Cut Express 4.0?
Also, can additional effects be purchased?
I need to create a "cartoon like" video effect. Any suggestions?

I do not have the software yet. I wanted to make sure there were plenty of good quality effects before I purchased it. I've worked with a few programs in the past (mostly freebies) that had tons and tons of really crappy effects!

It's commonly used in Sony Vegas productions.
One complicated way of doing it in FCE would be to use multiple layers of video, add a Gaussian Blur and increase the zoom on the bottom layer while lowering the Opacity on the top layer, but in order to smoothly animate the rays you'd have to do some rather convoluted things.
Is there a simple way to do this in Final Cut Express (using 3.5 right now, considering upgrading) for both video and text?

I don't believe the "Light Rays" filter included with FCE 4 is the effect you want. It makes the clip look a lot different than the examples you provided. Effects like the one you are looking for need to be created by themselves, and not just applied. Tom's book definitely explains how to do this, but I was unsuccessful as of yet in finding the exact lesson (part of the problem is that I don't know exactly what such an effect was called, so I can't just look it up in the index. It's a 300-something page book, so finding a particular section without remembering its name is a little tricky...)
I will continue to keep my eye out. I believe it has something to do with creating two text tracks, applying some sort of glow to the bottom one, and keyframing its movement. Will let you know when I know for sure.

Effects > Video Generators > Boris
Select the kind of title you want, drag it to the Viewer. Click the Controls tab in the Viewer. Enter your titles, tweak your settings (color, font, etc). Then move the clip to your sequence. In general, Boris Title 3D and Title Crawl work best.
If you want the titles to appear over video, place the title clip(s) on a track that is higher than your video.

You can export a QuickTime movie from After Effects and use it in FCE. AE projects will not open in FCE.

Absolutely. Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion). Make sure you check the Self-Contained box. The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added. Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

Recreating this on final cut express (effects)

Hello, I was wondering if anybody knows if it's possible to recreate the intro effects from this tv show (it's dynasty from the 80's) on final cut express. I'm talking about the pictrues thats slight up in strips (the character intros) Any info on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty simple in FCE. There are a number of different ways to do it, cropping the video, using garbage mattes or mask shape filters, or using travel mattes. There's a lot to learn here so you might want to read the manual about these or get a good instruction book or DVD.

Preferred input format with VHS via Canpous 55 to iMovie/Final Cut Express

I am using VHS deck to Canpus 55 to iMovie 08/MacBook Pro.
I do the input to iMovie 08 as it is less problematic for input than Final Cut Express and also I can share these with family for their video making in iMovie.
However I import the video files from iMovie events to FCE for editing.
1. I notice the VHS-to Canopus-to iMovie are .dv files with frame size 720x480 and compressor file says DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, not Apple Intermediate Codec.
2. I also import AVCHD files and those are frame size 960x540 and compressor is Apple Intermediate Codec.
When I bring the .dv files in from iMovie 08 to FCE, I sometimes get the warning about the files not in the standard settings and the drop down list of settings include Apple Intmediate Codec in various choices and the NTSC in various choices.
Should these be somehow standardized or will the eventual output be ok? I had one VHS 15 min segment look great on the computer in iMovie, then FCE but was very digitized after output to iDVD.

general advice:
• iM is meant for consumers - convenient, but limited.
• FC/e or /p is meant for (semi)professionals - what iM offers as a 'one click done'-solution, is a many-steps-process with some background-knowledge and understanding needed.
• for sure, FC offers MUCH more options .. any option, you'll soon get lost
• the learning curve for FC is steep! buy a book of master-mind TOM WOLSKY, who generously participates here at this board ...-
• I don't see a need for you in spending 1.000$ more for the FC/pro suite ... Motion? Color? Compressor? Highly complex tools for even more complex processing ...
I would 'play' with iM to get familiar with your project - what do you need, how should it look? if you reach the limits, have a look at FC/e at any Apple-store ... if it doesn't scare you, get the app and the book, and spend some months studying ...

Final Cut Express HD and Camcorder compatibility HELP Ughhhhhhhh!!!!

I just don't get it. Appple has a section that shows which camcorders are compatible with Final Cut HD Express, but there mostly old camcorders and not many HD ones at that. Then you do read some of these review sites on camcorders and they tell you they have been using Final Cut express with such and such a camcorder that is not on the APPLE list!! Whats more frustrating are these long discussions/threads/message boards on the net in terms of whats compatible and what isn't with HD express. Can we have a comprehensive list somewhere. Their's obviusly a huge problem and disconnnect here since there are literally thousands of pages and threads and messages dealing with this, and I'm adding to it. Any help will be appreciatiated. Thank you

I forgot you (and HD cameras) should be the only importance to Apple.
Yeah forget about alllllllllll the other SD mini-dv cams, etc.

You can't drag a transition into the canvas. If you're dragginmg a transition from the effects tab you drag it between the edit point of two clips in the timeline.
Make sure show edit overlays is turned on in the Canvas view popup.

Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Quits unexpectedly while opening

Hi all. I have Final Cut Express HD 3.5. I bought it several years ago and used it on my Mac Book Pro (2006 model). I bought an iMac a few years later (December 2009). I can't remember what OS the iMac came with, but it's currently running 10.6.8.
I recently was asked to collaborate on a video project, so I installed FCE to use on the project. The installation went just fine, and the software didn't seem to disagree with my system, nor the system with the software.
I then went to open* FCE, and got the following error message:
"Final Cut Express HD quit unexpectedly while using the Impromptu Analysis plug-in."
*Note: this is the first time opening the software on this computer after the first time installing it on this computer.

It tells me that while loading Audio Filters, It comes across a "MOSO: Impromptu Analysis" and somehow doesn't like it.
Live type and Sound track both seem to work fine.
THINGS I HAVE TRIED:
1. the first thing I did was a search of my computer for "Impromptu Analysis," and found a .component (I think) plugin. it wasn't in the traditional audio plugins folder, but within a folder containing the application (Impromptu) in my documents folder My first instinct was "get that thing out of here!!" so I deleted it. problem not solved.
2. Did a complete software update of everything, verify and repaired permissions, and still nothing.
3. uninstalled and reinstalled, and nothing.
4. Ran software update again.
5. reboots between each step.
6. Bid on Final Cut studio 5 on ebay. I've since been outbid (but still watching like a hawk).
What I don't understand is even after deleting the plugin, rebooting and an uninstall and reinstall of FCE, and it's still messing with the plugin.
THINGS I HAVEN'T TRIED
1. upgrading to 4.0 (don't have a disc, and it's not available for a free update, since it's discontinued, is it?)
2. reinstalling the plugin that's causing the issue
3. deleting or resetting the preferences of the AU plugins list. (not sure how to).
my best guess on the problem plug-in is that it is part of an install of the live coding software called Impromptu (http://impromptu.moso.com.au/). But it's blowing my mind as to why it's still messing things up even after I deleted it. I don't think I ever did a proper install of Impromptu, nor did I do a proper uninstall...
If anyone can point me in the right direction, that'd be super swell.

Well never mind everyone. Apparently, Searching your computer for plugins through spotlight doesn't search the plugins folder in either the "Macintosh HD" location or the ~/Library locations.. Go figure.
I went to re-install the trouble plugin, and to my surprise, I still had 2 copies of the plugin installed on my system. I trashed them, as well as the other 15 or so of their brother and sister Impromptu Plugins, and got the software to open! now all I have to do is figure out what codec/setup to use.

Video cameras no longer connecting to Final Cut Express

I have two video cameras (Sony TRV-25 and Sony HDV-A1U) which are no longer connecting to Final Cut Express through the firewire (4-pin to 800). I get the "unable to initialize" message. What's weird is that they were working fine just last month.
I'm on a relative new iMac, running 10.6, FCE 4.
I've double and triple-checked the settings on the cameras (i.e., HDV and iLink output settings), and I've selected the appropriate settings in Easy Setup in FCE (1060i60 for the HDV, NTSC-DV for the TRV).
I also reset video devices under the View menu.
Just for kicks, I tried connecting the TRV-25 to my old Mac. I had no problems at all. [The old Mac won't work with the HDV camera, so I didn't bother trying that.]
There are no other firewire devices connected to the Mac. There is an external drive that I use for capturing the video files that is attached through one of the USB ports.
I went and bought another firewire cable just to make sure, but got the same results.
For what it's worth, I also could not get the cameras to be recognized in iMovie.
Is there anything else I should try?

When I looked in System Profiler and click on the firewire line, it just said something about maximum speed 800 MB per second or whatever. Should it actually have the camera listed there? Is that the right way to check?
The firewire is 4-pin (iLink) to 800, and there are no other devices connected.

Adobe CS4/5 and Final Cut Express On a MacBook Air?

Hey all
Im planning to get a MacBook for my GCSE's, and im leaning towards the air.
I will be running applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS5, After Effects CS5, Lightroom CS5, and Final Cut Express regularly, so would a 13" 1.86ghz MBA C2D Processor with 4gb of RAM be able to run these apps fast and efficiently with no lag? Or should I opt for the baseline MBP 13"? Im also looking for portability, as im going to be taking it into school

After effects!? Yikes... that is a beast of a program! Depends how in depth you plan on using it. Are you going to be doing 3D animations with several camera layers? If so, I don't think a MBP is going to work too smoothly. If you are doing basic to moderate use of AE functions then I think it would work fine.
Just a heads up before buying, check out the apple refurb store. They have a bunch of MBP with different specs for a very reasonable price. I got my 17" MBP from there and it works awesome with the same warranty as new... for like $500 off!

Downgrading from Final Cut Pro Studio to Final Cut Express

Will Final Cut Express let me use the Boris Title 3D Video Generator effect that I now use in Final Cut Pro Studio?
Does it have an outline text video generator effect?
Since I have DVDSP 4.1.2, will I be able to drag my exported non self-contained quicktime movie into DVDSP? I have read I can use iDVD.
I see from the tutorial (http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/) it does not have the ability to log clips for batch capture later but it does have a project button. Does anyone use that and can share what it does?
I have a Canon DV20 HD camera which I use for DV also. Since I have read that FCE will not read HDV from this camera, has anyone brought DV in using this camera?
Does anyone see any other negatives to downgrading?
I have been using Final Cut Pro from version 1.5 since it did what I needed it to do. Over the years they have added a plethora of packages to it, none of which I use. So why spend 700.00 to upgrade when I can spend 200 to get what I will use?

Yes. Or you can use Compressor, which you should have, to encode your video.

It allows you to log your material first, selecting the pieces on the tape you want to capture and then going back and letting the machine capture the selected pieces.

Final Cut Express to Timestamped DVD

I have a Final Cut Express project that is 20 minutes long. There are 140 different clips. Each clip ranges from 5 to 30sec. a piece. I need to export something that all the editors can view on their separate computers w/ chapter markers that have timestamps so they can tell me what/where to edit.
So far we have been doing it from FCE directly, but now that the video for this company is expanding I need to create a better workflow. One that multiple editors can view for instructing editing on videos.
I am a graphic designer working @ a publishing company (we are diving into video blind, not my choice). I've got as far as making over 20 videos for viewing online. Now they have footage from one of they conferences they host and all of them need to view it for editing. Then they can come back and say "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15 etc"... any suggestions?

FCE Timecode Display may display the current timecode at the playhead position, the start and end timecode of the clip, and the reel name. You may enter this name either during capture (reel name plus timecode may uniquely identify a frame in your movie library), or later in the browser while in list view. Unfortunately there is no way to display the clip name.
By using your own example it is not possible to display "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15" but only something like "00:15:03 - 00:18:04" and "00:04:03 - 00:15:15", etc.
Note however that using the default Type (Absolute Timecode) you might in fact get "02:15:03 - 02:18:04" and "03:04:03 - 03:15:15" if clip 3 starts at absolute 02:00:00 and clip 5 at absolute 03:00:00; in other words you might not need the clip name because the absolute timecode (also named source timecode) uniquely identifies the clip in the movie.
Some warnings.
- Burning many clips in iDVD is not an issue, as long as the whole movie is shorter than 2 hours: not a problem in your case (20 minutes, right ?).
- Instead adding a chapter name to each clip might raise problems: first there is a limit in iDVD I don't recall, but for sure less than 150...; second there is no automatic way to name the chapters: you have to type each name in each chapter marker.
- iDVD does not have a "time window", but if you burn the clips timecode using the filter above you'll be able to read it also in the iDVD preview window.
- Finally, after burning the DVD, you can always read the movie timecode while playing back the movie with DVD Player: just use the various controls made available by the player. This however is the new timecode of the movie, not the absolute/source timecode of the original clips.

Which camera to get for Final Cut Express 3.5HD/ upgrade to FCE 4?

Hello everyone!
I know this has been discussed frequently, but i am sort of looking for a costum made solution for me
Following situation: Macbook, 2.16Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm.
I am running 10.5.3, have Final Cut Express 3.5 installed and am used to work in it,
mainly for editing video files not coming from a camcorder.
I have some experience in SD miniDV recording/editing though.
NOW I was thinking of getting a new camcorder in the 1500$ max range.
I want to edit video files, sometimes burn DVDs, at other times only to have them on the mac.
What i like about some of these new HD consumer models they can record AVCHD and mpeg2 SD in DVD quality. That should allow me to record in mpeg2 and have less hassle with importing/converting into Final Cut Express 3.5 if lower quality is fine (which it is as of now)
At the same time I could upgrade to Final Cut Express 4 and import the AVCHD files, but I still taken aback from how time and resource consuming it is. Plus it does not allow full HD 1920x1080 in FCE 4 does it?
So I was looking at the Sony HDR SR11 as a nice camcorder. Seen it live, seems decent.
On the other hand, is a camera which records in HDV a better solution for me?
I could keep Final Cut 3.5, no need to upgrade right?
Is it less hassle to transfer files to the mac and edit them?
I am very unsure which way to go right now...

This a huge debate. There are very few advantages to the new AVCHD camera's and the vgery long list of negative aspects of AVCHD camera's outweighs any usefulness of them. They are designed for Grandad to pick up and shoot good quality pictures and not for editing.
I have posted below the wiki address for AVCHD, please read the page. It is very important you do read it. It explains in depth about AVCHD.
I feel the is no real place for the hard drive based AVCHD camera. There is a place for a mini-dv tape based camera.
Life will be very hard if you go the Hard-drive camera route. Stay with tape.
Tape is cheap, hardy and easy to move around. Hard drives not so!!!
