Final Cut Express 4 Only Launches If I Delete It's Prefs - What's Up?

I just installed Final Cut Express 4 (FCE4) and it will only launch if I delete the program's preferences file.
If I don't delete the preferences file, the splash dialog comes up and processes for a bit, but then it suddenly disappears and loading stops. No errors. No warnings. No nothing - it just stops.
There was no previous FCE4 installation.

Open the voice recording in QuickTime Pro ( QuickTime Player 7) and then go to File > Export and set the Export to Sound to AIFF. Click the Options button and set the options to
and click OK.
Then Export the file.
Now import that file into FCE. If it does not work post back.

Capturing Flip Video to Final Cut Express Will not launch Flip Video

I have done this many times before. I am using Final Cut Express and I am plugging my Flip Video camera into my MacBook Pro and the Flip Video software does not launch. It does not seem to be the
Flip Video software that is the problem. I have upgraded the Flip Video software. The prompt I get says Flip Video quit unexpectely. I have no idea what is going on. I get a huge log of computer terms which I do not understand. Any ideas? Wish I knew more.

The problem is with your Flip Video software. It is launching but then crashing - that's what the message means:
The prompt I get says Flip Video quit unexpectely.
"Quit Unexpectedly" is a nice way to say "Crashed".
You could try trash the Flip Software.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
If that doesn't help you need to contact the makers of the Flip software.

FCE doesn't allow for audio only capture, it's in a twist somewhere.
Try trashing the FCE preferences.

Final Cut Express - wouldn't launch - set up a new user account

I upgraded my FCE to the latest 4.01 and then it wouldn't launch. I got a suggestion to create a new user account on my computer, log out, and log back in as the new user and try again. That worked! I got FCE to successfully start up. But now what do I do? I logged out as the new user and logged back in as my regular self, and FCE won't start again. I've searched here and can't find the next step. Do I have to abandon my old account and begin using the new account? I'm guessing not.

Given the history of your installation, I would completely uninstall FCE.
The sequence of installs & upgrades is probably at the root of the problems.
To uninstall FCE you could use either FCS Remover or follow the FCE Troubleshooting Guide and Apple Instructions. (Note: While the instructions were written for removing FCE HD (v3.x and 3.5x) they still apply to FCE4; just ignore the references to Soundtrack).
Then, I would reinstall it from the FCE4 upgrade DVD. +Don't install FCE 1.x first.+ Everything you need is *on the FCE4 DVD.* When you install, it will ask you for your original serial number (from FCE 1) plus the serial number from your FCE4 upgrade. (By the way, FCE needs to be installed from an admin account and it needs to be run at least once in that admin account before it is run in any other accounts.)

Final Cut Express won't launch consistently

I am in a school, in a local account. Out of 15 Macs I can get FCE to launch on about 7 of them. The settings are identical as are the machines.
1G RAM, 10.5.8 iMac
I have repaired permissions, updated all software, reinstalled twice and still it is hit or miss. What other areas can I look at to help these launch for our students?

I do not see specs specific to FCE. What name would associate with it? (That sounds as wrong to me as it does to you :)) Do I need to find each users pref rather than going in as admin? I am grabbing at any straws, as you can see.
When FCE is launched it opens for a second and shuts down. It never fully opens. No error messages.

I solved it (although it's more of an "I can't believe I didn't try this" issue). Check your permissions on the application. If you are not explicitly set as a user, add yourself.

When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!

I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min) the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.

Problem with my Final Cut express HD's livetype & soundtrack programs

Hi everyone, hope someone could help me
In 2006 i but my Final cut Express HD for my laptop Macbook. I have used a lot, it always worked.
I haven't used it this year and the only new thing a did to my laptop was installed the snowleopard software is now 10.6.8. But yesterday, i try to save a project in my LIVETYPE and SOUNDTRACK (programs that come with the Final Cut Express HD) it automatically close up deleting everything and appear a window saying: that quit unexpectedly and push reopen and repeat the error over and over again.
the program (Livetype and Soundtrack) opens and are install perfectcly but it doesn't let you save or export anything it automatically close it up.
Final cut is the only one that let you save projects.
I have install and uninstall it many time and it still doesn't work.
I will like to know what happens? and how can i fix it?!

Thanks for your help! i try it and i thought it help, because this time the installation ask me new things like for example: my seriel number, etc. something the program didn't before. But in the end everything is install perfectly but it repeat the same problem when i try to save a project in livetype or soundtrack but not in final cut. This is what appears in my screen:

DV MXF import to Final Cut Express

All the online talk about importing MXF files into Final Cut have been about importing variations of HD in Final Cut Pro. My simple question is can I import complete MXF files at DV quality (or convert them before hand) in Final Cut Express?
I currently can only import the video and audio tracks separately into Final Cut Express.

FCE only works with DV from tape capture. If you have DV in an MXF wrapper, FCE cannot bring it in.

What software will convert .MTS files to something that will open in Final Cut Express?

I need a reccomendation for a software that will convert .MTS file to a file type that Final Cut Express HD will recognize.

What I'm doing is converting an .MTS file to .mp4 using HandBrake. FinalCut Express opens the .mp4 files (sometimes) but they have pixellation with huge squares all over the screen. I'm guessing it has to do with keyframes. So that's why I'm trying to convert it. When I open the .mp4 file in QuickTime in order to Export as QuickTime Movie I select these options for AIC:

Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

OK, supports recommendation works. He told me the App Store version has some issues with writing the pro files out (where the retail version does it correctly).
He had me uninstall (move) the app to my desktop, download and install the trial with the trial key, then replace the file with my App Store downloaded one.
It WORKED....for the first time I've got Aperture and Final Cut Express loaded together and working.

Check System Preferences. I think Control-1 is used by something in the OS now. Switch it off. It's a major p[ain the way the OS is taking over more and more of the keyboard, allowing less options for application use.
