Final cut express and Final Cut Pro coexistance

I heard that FC express HD destroys the ability to export to tape in iMovie HD. Is that true?
If it is Will FCP HD do the same thing?
Will Express and FCP remain toatlly functional if I have them both installed.
My grandson likes to make movies in iMovie and I dont' want to discourage him, but I like to learn new things.

That was with iMovie4 (and 3) only. Doesn't happen with iMovieHD. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93804
I don't know about having FCE and FCP installed together though.

  • Standard MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express and other great Pro Apps

Hey Guys - tell me if this configuration of a MacBook Pro would be ok and work great for Final Cut Expess, Aperture, Creative Suite, and other Apps without slowness and other problems
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    Superdrive 8x
    2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM - 2 x 1GB
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. However, if you want to run +more than one+ of those listed apps simultaneously, the best thing you can do is add more RAM. Go to the max - 4 GB (2 x 2 GB). Note that Apple overcharges for RAM (and they don't make RAM, they just buy it from Samsung, Micron, and others, mark it way way up, and resell it). So, buy Crucial (the consumer division of Micron, in fact) or Kingston RAM. 2 x 2 GB sticks can be purchased for a little over $100 (compared to Apple's $200).
    Hope this helps...

  • Airport express and new macbook pro

my daughter has just purchased a new macbook pro and we have set up the airport express. her macbook tells her that she is connected to the airport express but she can not load safari.

Hello Jodi Meyer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
How do you have the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) configured to get Internet access? That is, do you have it connected directly to another router or modem? If so, what is the make/model number of that other device?

  • Capturing in Express and working in Pro?

Before I spend the time going down this [for me] uncharted path, I wanted to look up the following advice:
If I have a licensed copy of express (which I do - but not currently installed on my Macpro) and a licensed copy of FCPro -- can I have both applications running on this one machine simultaneously?
I want to be able to continue to do my work (in FCP) while capturing video. So it would be great if I could use FCE to capture in the background while working forward in FCP.
    Is this possible?
    Is it a bad idea?

In my experience you can capture in FCE and edit in FCP without any problem; but you won't be able to go back to FCE for further editing.
I'm not sure though it is a good idea to run capture on background while doing other jobs. I think it depends a lot on the type of foreground job (rendering would not be a good idea) and mainly on your Mac power. You might cause dropped frames during capture...

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

  • Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1.1

    Hi,
I have a client with both of these installed on the same machine (running 10.4.6).
When they try and launch either application, the splash screen comes up, loading various filters, etc. then they get an error message:
"File Error: A file of this name already exists" "OK"
    Clicking "OK" closes the app.
    Any idea:
    1. What the file in question is?
    2. Can it be deleted to let the app run?
    3. Can Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1.1 be used on the same machine?
I'll post this on the Final Cut Pro thread too (but with the order reversed).

    1. No idea.
    2. Depends what the file is.
    3. Yes. Though I've never tried to run them at the same time.

  • Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 7

I have been working at school on Final Cut Pro 7
I just bought Final Cut Express 4 thinking it would be a cheaper way for me work at my home computer. However, when I open my Final Cut files (created in Pro 7) I get a message that says their format is too new for Final Cut Express 4.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it really not possible to go back and forth between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Express 4?
Is there some creative way of making this work? Help!

Unfortunately not. You can start the project in FCE. Open it FCP, but once it's saved in FCP, it will no longer open in FCE. (It's not supposed to anyway, though it does rarely in some cases where very little is done in FCP.)

  • .avi files and Final Cut Pro/Express

A friend of mine, a PC users, has a Cinemate film to video converter <http://www.moviestuff.tv/c_15.html>, and has digitized some footage for me. He saved it using three different systems: Scenalyzer, Vegas and Pinnacle. Each outputs a .avi file, which he put an a portable USB drive.
The files import into Final Cut (Express), but with this 'warning':
'The following media files are not optimized for Final Cut Express HD.
It is highly recommend that you recapture the media to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.'
They seem to playback, and the images 'appear' bring and sharp, so I don't really know what the warning means.
He does have the choice, when he captures, to save the files not as .avi -- his systems default -- but as NTSC DV files.
Would that be the preferred option? Or, put another way, what would be the best format for import into Final Cut Pro or Express?
    Thanks,
    Hal

<<You may want to invest in a software converter (flip4mac, for example) that will ingest your avi files into FCP.>>
This may turn out to be an option, but it isn't that FCPro won't accept the avi files; it's just that it gave me this warning that I didn't understand. If, as a previous posting said, it's just telling me that this wasn't imported via Final Cut, then 'no big deal'. If it's telling me something else, that's yet to be discovered.
<<If your friend saves the files as DV NTSC, they will still give you that warning when you bring them into FCP. DV NTSC may mean DV stream, which will have to be demuxed (the audio & video are mixed together) and is not easily editable. However, QT pro can demux these files for you.>>
It'll be an interesting 'experiment', and I'll be sure and post the results.
Curiously enough, iMovie imports these same files without blinking, and seems to convert them on the fly as it were to .dv files, with no apparently loss of quality. These can then be imported into FCPro/Express.
<<About the only thing that doesn't give a warning are files captured using FCP ....>>
If that's all it's tell me, that I didn't capture these using FCP, then I guess I could say it's telling me something I already knew. <grin>
    Thanks for the input.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 - 5 minute captures then freeze

Something I have found with Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0.
After Updating to Tiger - 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.4.1 - Both Pro 4.5 and Express 3.0 will not capture more then 5 minutes and 12 seconds. If you are having this issue the solution I used to fix both Pro and Express issues was an update on the software. Final Cut Pro 5 fixed the problem (or 6 if you can) and with Final Cut Express, version 3.5 fixed the issue but if you can go with FCX 4.
Let me know if this helped or if you have found a different solution. Downgrading the os might help but that is too much of a pain and it's time to upgrade the software anyway.

    #29: Need AGP Graphics card
Shane's Stock Answer #29 – Error: “Need AGP Graphics card”
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302667
The Final Cut software is looking for a graphics card type that is required for that version of the software. FCP 4 and FCP 4.5 were released when AGP cards were the requirement. Attempting to open this on a Mac with a PCIe graphics card, such as an Intel Mac, will cause this error. FCP 4.5 is not supported on the Intel Macs. If you happen to have a PowerPC Quad processor Mac and get this error, you can try this hack:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
You can also press the "esc" key as you launch FCP. This enables FCP to open and run, but know that it might not work optimally.
If that doesn’t work, or if you have an Intel Mac, you are going to have to upgrade to a supported version of FCP…and FCP 6, part of Final Cut Studio 2, is the latest version.

  • Final Cut Express HD and the Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro along with final cut express HD. After purchase I read that FCE HD won't work with the macbook pro. I was hoping to see if anyone knew if they were coming out with an upgrade to the universal version like they are with Final Cut Pro.
Intel based macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

That will not work. Ian's solution is for dual core G5s and PCIe based iMacs. It does not address Intel based machines like the 2006 iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines will have to wait till the end of March for the release of new Universal Binary software to run on them. It's possible FCE3 will never run and will need to be upgraded to another version. If you recently purchased FCE HD to run it on this new computer, I'd suggest, if you can, to return it until the position on the new software becomes clear.

What you did was not enough to delete the preferences properly.
This article tells you how. It is for FCE2 but works the same for FCE3 so I assume it is also OK for FCE 3.5:-

It's simple to do so try it before reinstalling etc. - You should completely uninstall before reinstalling:-

  • Compatibility issues with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro

I'm getting ready to edit a project and I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro. I've never used Express put I assume I would be able to make cuts, simple effects and titles. Is this correct.
If I transfer project files from one platform to the other will i run into any issues?
Thanks for all and any help.

    {quote}
Although they operate in a similar fashion that are not fully compatible. You can open a FCE project in FCP, but once you've edited it in FCP you can't go back to FCE.

  • Final Cut Pro 5, Pro HD, Express, and Express HD

In class I have used Final Cut Pro 5, and that is the main reason that I am going to buy a Powerbook G4 (15 inch Aluminum) or iBook (14 inch). But what is the difference between Final Cut Pro, FC Pro HD, FC Express, and FC Express HD?? And are these the only four that are out there??

When you mentioned Final Cut Pro etc. I assumed you were an experienced editor with months of useage of FCP.
Do I take it that you are fairly new to editing?
If so iMovie would be ideal and FREE!
It is very simple to learn and effortless to use.
It can actually do some things dead easily which are difficult (or nearly impossible) with the expensive programs.
I'm thinking of Titling. The hardest thing you have to do is type in the words! After that you just choose the style of title you want from a list of over 30 types and it is made automatically! You can of course alter the fonts, sizes, colours etc.
There are plenty of different transitions and special effects which are simplicity itself to use and adding music and voice-overs is a doddle.
The main things it won't do are blue-screen effects and superimposition of one video track over another.
Prize-winning films have been (and are still being) made on iMovie. It's definitely worth trying out.
    Ian.

  • Is it possible to transfer stored (b-roll) video footage from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro event library? Is so, what do I need?

I have been editing in final cut express and now that I'm working in Pro X I would like to transfer my b-roll footage from FCX to Pro X. I read that there is an app. that you can buy that does this for Final Cut Pro 7, is this possible with Final Cut Express?

Any media used in FCE can be used in FCP. No third party software is required.
You cannot take an FCE project to FCP. 7toX will not help as FCE has no XML export.

  • From Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express

I shot something in HD on a P2 card and captured it into a computer with Final Cut Pro. I want to edit it on my laptop at home, on which I have Final Cut Express. If I export the FCP file and make it a quicktime file to use on my FCE, will the video maintain its HD properties? (Forgive my ignorance. I'm still learning.) Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing but if you shot it on P2 media in HD it's probably DVCPRO HD. The codec for this format is only available with FCP. You can't edit this edit in FCE unless you export it to the the Apple Intermediate Codec. Yes, there will be some quality loss in the porcess.
