Final Cut Express as Offline - Final Cut Studio 2 as Online?

Is it possible to use FInal Cut Express for offline editing and then replace the media with HD versions for online editing in Final Cut Pro?
Example of our proposed Workflow:
1. Capture HDCam footage from CineAlta Camera into Final Cut Studio 2 at DVCProHD 1080i60.
2. Use Media Manager to create a copy of the project while downconverting media to DV.
3. Transfer project folder to other Mac running FC Express. Create FCE project file and create an edit using DV footage.
(here's where I'm uncertain)
4. Can FC Express export EDL's or in some way get that edit back into FC Pro, where I can relink back to the DVCProHD media?

Well, I gained access to a computer running FCE 4 and created a test project. When I try to open in in FCP 6.0.1 I get a message stating that the file format is "too new" for this version of FCP.
I guess I need to try FCE HD 3.5, but it will not run on any computer without an AGP graphics card.
This shouldn't be this troublesome, should it?

You can have them both on the same computer as I and many others have done for years.
Just go ahead and install FCS 3 normally.
There will be absolutely no problems.

Final Cut Express vs. Final Cut Express HD

I am confused between Final Cut Express and the Final Cut Express HD. All the time I though I am using Final Cut Express HD version 4.0.1 which should be capable to capture HDV tapes (to my understanding) until lately I try to capture a tape shoot by a HDV camera (miniDV tape shoot by Canon) but was NOT successful. When I check back my application by opening a final cut project window >,About Final Cut Express, it shows I am using version 4.0.1, but I can’t capture the HDV tape shoot by the HDV camera. I went back to my application folder, I found I have 3 different Final Cut Express versions there which is including version 1.0.1 size 11.7 MB created Jan 25/03;version 3.0 size 160.3MB created Jan 25/05 (this version having HD wording at the end) and version 4.0.1 size 239.4MB was created Nov 6/07. Do I have to delete the version 1.0.1 and 3.0 to make the version 4.0.1 work well or something else in the system that I don't understand such as some kind of configuration should be set/change? Thank you in advance folks. By the way, some one can walk me through how to connect an old Mac 17” monitor to my new 27” iMac so that I can move the Canvas window over (I don’t know if it’s appropriate to ask this question here, if not, I apologize)? If you export the project from FCE you can import the QuickTime into FCP. You can do limited work to it like adding titles.

Final Cut Express 4 or Final Cut Studio??

I am currently having to burn DVDs for a new company named Astramedia.
We are getting our Videos from suppliers in the HDV format as a .mov file. (More details at the end) These files were exported using Apples Final Cut Studio. Now we want to use these Video files for DVD burning. The DVDs should be in high quality, in 16:9, and with Intro and Menu. My question is do I need to by Apple Final Cut Studio for the Compressor and the DVD Studio Pro programm or is it sufficient enough to use Final Cut Express 4 to export the HDV files and use iDVD to burn the DVDs?

FCE cannot use native HDV files.
You would have to convert them first to one of the FCE friendly codecs then edit and pipe into iDVD.
You will get a pretty good result.
Compressor and DVDSPro will raise the bar of course but a lot more knowledge is involved in proper use of these programs.

Final Cut Express incompatibility with Final Cut Studio 2

I recently upgraded to FCS 2. I have several projects created with Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1. I can open all projects created with FCE in Final Cut Pro 6.0 without difficulty. The problem occurs when I "round trip" a clip from Final Cut Pro 6.0 to Soundtrack Pro to remove audio problems. When the edited audio file is returned to the Final Cut Pro project, the audio is out of sync. This only happens when the project was created with FCE HD and opened in Final Cut Pro 6.0. If I make a new project starting from scratch in FCP 6.0 , use the same media, and perform a similar "round trip", the problems dissappears. I would hate to recreate all projects in FCP 6.0. Any solutions?

Final Cut Express vs. Final Cut Pro

I assume a topic like this has already been discussed, but I would like to know what to do in my scenario.
I'm currently a high school junior, and I'm taking a media course in school where I have learned to use Final Cut Pro. Next year, I'll be taking it again, still using Final Cut Pro, and I may want to do some editing work at home, though it is not required.
The problem there is Final Cut Pro is very expensive, probably isn't sold without everything else in Studio box set, and I only have a 1.42 GHz SuperDrive eMac, with 1 GB RAM.
I've seen Final Cut Express, and I feel it might be the best thing to get at a reasonable price. I want to start making video projects outside of school, but iMovie does not allow me to do much. Plus, I won't be using HD, so there's no issue of it there. Could someone tell me what are the pros and cons in using FCP over FCE, and what will I not be able to do in FCE?

Bottom line is if you're going to be working in DV or HDV FCE should be more than enough for your needs, at least till you're making enough $$$ to upgrade. I know if FCE had been available when I left school I would have had the best tools around.
Have you looked into the Educational edition of FCS, if you can't bear the downgrade? Might be what you need.

Opening a Final Cut Express File with Final Cut Pro

I recently got a copy of Final Cut Pro to use at home. I have access to a lab that uses Final Cut express. I had to use the lab computers to capture the project. (I'm still missing some equipment...) I saved everything onto a USB flash drive to bring it home with me to work on.
Now that I'm at home, I saved the files to my harddrive.. but now can't seem to be able to open them with FCP. I keep getting Error messages.. and when something is finally opened.. it says "offline media" and is simply displaying a red screen...
How can I actually open this project and work on it at home!? Help!

You need either a hard drive with the captured media on it or the original tapes/cards from the camera. Unlike iMovie, Final Cut Pro does not store the media in its project file.

Can you transport files from Final Cut Express HD to Final Cut Pro HD?

I have a problem.
While working with Final Cut Express HD my clips were erased leaving me with blank spaces in my sequence. I can't seem to figure out how I can save my movie. I have reloaded the files into Express and even Took everything(file & sequence) to Pro. I am having no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this.

Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 7

I have been working at school on Final Cut Pro 7
I just bought Final Cut Express 4 thinking it would be a cheaper way for me work at my home computer. However, when I open my Final Cut files (created in Pro 7) I get a message that says their format is too new for Final Cut Express 4.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it really not possible to go back and forth between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Express 4?
Is there some creative way of making this work? Help!

Unfortunately not. You can start the project in FCE. Open it FCP, but once it's saved in FCP, it will no longer open in FCE. (It's not supposed to anyway, though it does rarely in some cases where very little is done in FCP.)

You can export any movie from FCE to Quicktime, and use it in FCP X. If you export using ProRes 422 codec it will already optimized for FCP X.
What you can't do is use the FCE projects themselves in FCP X.

Final cut express 3 vs. final cut express 4??

I have an old ibook G4 with a 1.07 Ghz processor. I am currently updating my operating system from panther to tiger and installing about 512MB ram so that I can get final cut express. I am a student who is used to using final cut pro in class... but in order to get it on my (old and slow) personal computer, I will have to get FCE 3 since 4 requires 1.25 Ghz processor and the CPU in my G4 cannot be upgraded (so I've read)... Is FCE 3 a big step backwards? Should I save my money until I can afford a new computer and then go with FCE 4 or even FCP? Any helpful tips will be appreciated!

For your iBook with Tiger, FCE 3 would be a good way to go. If you can, put in 1GB RAM (it wasn't clear if you were increasing RAM to 512MB or adding 512MB to what it already has). All the basic editing capabilities of FCE 3 are identical with FCE 4.
FCEHD 3.5 added native support for Intel processors, keyframing for filters & effects, support for HDV video.
FCEHD 4 added support for AVCHD video, the open format timeline, importing from iMovie 08, some new FxPlug effects, new soft normalize & gain audio controls. HOWEVER, some things were removed - including Soundtrack (completely removed), various Livetype assets, some filters & effects. There are a lot of people who think FCE4 is actually a step backwards from 3.5 because of what was removed !!
You will find lots of users still making productive use out of ALL versions of FCE including version 1. The basic capturing / editing / exporting features are the same in all versions.

I got Final Cut Express 2.0. It don't runs on my MacBook 2.16GHz. AGP card is needed. Anyone know, if and how to run it without AGP card?
Second question: apple support told me, that FCE 3.0 HD runs on MacBook 2.16GHz. I've seen it on apple.com, but I need your suggestion, befor I get me an upgrade.
Anything what I need and allready don't know?

If you have questions about or are having difficulties with FCP, I'd suggest you start a new topic in the Final Cut Pro forum rather than posting in someone else's year-old thread.
Final Cut Pro is by no means "amateur". It's used by many professional editors of feature films. So either you got Final Cut Express, or you just haven't discovered how to use all the features. Again, the FCP forum can help.
