Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
    Highlight Internal Speakers
    Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2. Remove the headphone.
    If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
    in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
    Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

    Choose the method for:
    "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

6. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
    Play sound effects through:
   Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".

Get a copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert your MPG file to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). In FCE, select one of the setups that uses AIC that best matches your clip (say, 1920x1080i60). Create a new sequence, then import the converted file.
Note that if your MPG file is actually MPEG2 you will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Component in addition to MPEG Streamclip.
What was the source of the MPG file? How about if you open it in QuickTime, then do Window > Show Movie Inspector. Tell us what it says for codec/compression, frame size & frame rate.

You want to go from FCE to FCP-X?
You would need to do so in multiple steps.
1) You would need to be working in a very late version of FCE.
2) Open the FCE project in FCP-7.
3) In FCP-7, export an XML of the sequence you wish to get to FCP-X.
4) Purchase the software 7toX

6) Import the converted XML into FCP-X
7) Re-link all you media
It should be noted that when you use XML, not all the things you have done in your original sequence will make it through the final translation. There is more information about this at the 7toX page linked above.

Final Cut pro doesn't play the frames

My final cut pro doesn't play the frames in the application.
The whole time it works great but at ones this happend.

Couple of things to check and try.
1) In Viewer Display options check to see whether Better Performance is checked in the Quality section. If not, check it and that should help you set real time playback with a slight reduction in quality in the Viewer. However, it will not have any affect on your project.
2) If that doesn't work, consider generating Proxy files by eight clicking clips >Transcode Media. There is also a setting in Viewer Display Options to use Proxy in editing your project. Before you export the finished project, remember to change that setting back to Original/Optimized.
3) If that doesn't work, download a speed test and check the throughput of your media drive. It should be a separate drive from your start up disk and should be connected by Thunderbolt (fastest) USN3 (next fastest) or Firewire 800.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it. Depending on the type of file you might need to purchase the MPEG-2 playback component.

HT2948 Will Final Cut Express 4 work with the new Canon XA10 AVCHD ??

I'm in the process of shopping for new cameras for my students. We edit on Final Cut Express 4 HD. I want to buy the Canon XA10camwras which record to SD cards. I keep reading AVCHD video and am new to the technology. The B&H website says this camera :

FCE should work with the 60i (interlaced) footage this camera produces.
Also you should be able to load the SD and capture.
I do not have one or used one with FCE, the specs indicate it should.
Maybe a current owner can chip in their experiences.

Why has exporting a film from Final Cut Express (FCE) HD (3.5) taking 30 times longer and file size increased by 30X?

Exporting a 75 minute film from Final Cut Express (FCE) HD(3.5) through Quick Time Movie is now taking over an hour instead of the 2minutes it used to take. The FCEMovie file is now 14 GB instead of the 1 GB it used to be. In both cases Self Contained was notchecked when exporting. I havetried trashing the Preference file to no avail. There was a message when opening the FCE project that 140render files were offline. Ichecked the box to forget them and also did a Render All Both and Render Only Mixdownbefore exporting. I had thisproblem a few days ago and solved it by reinstalling FCE. However after two days the problem hascome back. As far as I know I didnot change anything in FCE or the system when the export times and file sizeincreased.

I think you are correct about the longer version being a self-contained movie except that I did not check that option when exporting. However, I have opened another project of the same size and that one can be exported in the usual time, the problem must reside with the particular project. A clue is that to regain some disk space I deleted the render folder for several projects including the one I am having trouble with. Also when iI opened that project I got a message that files were disconnected and I think they were render files. I did re-render before exporting and that is when the file length increased by a factor of 13, even though it was not supposed to be self-contained. FCE is working OK with other projects when I export them. I am still puzzled.

Does my version of Adobe CS5 Support the Canon 5d Mark II?

I recently viewed a PeachPit video series that had screen shots and workflows for and from the Canon 5d Mark II HDSLR camera.
I've been having a few problems and issues getting started and wonder if perhaps I need to update my version of CS5.
Here is a screen shot that leads me to believe this. I distinctly recall on the PeachPit instructional videos are 5d appearing in this drop down menu.

The screenshot you posted is for control and capture from DV and HDV devices; the 5D doesn't fit into this category. Since it is technically a "tapeless" camcorder, you are able to simply import the MOV files after you've copied them from your CF card to your hard drive. Technically, you could edit off the CF card, but you don't want to.
Just use the OS to copy the files to a hard drive (preferably one separate from the system drive), and then import the files into Premiere; there are many ways to do this, including from the PPro menu, by double-clicking the Project Panel, by dragging from a file browser window, or by using the Media Browser in Premiere. Moments after dragging them into the software, you'll be ready to begin editing.

Will Lightroom 4 get updated with support for Canon 7D Mark II Raw Files?

I received an update for Photoshop to support Canon 7D Mark II raw files (ACR 8.7), will Lightroom 4.4 get an update to support these files?

I don't know why you feel it makes things more complex. All you need to do is use the DNG converter as your download software. The conversion takes place during the download, and then you can import directly into Lightroom. I'm not trying to sell you on using DNG. But it isn't as cumbersome as it seems.
Since Lightroom doesn't utilize the Camera Raw plug-in, it makes it more difficult to provide updates. In Lightroom update means distributing a whole new Lightroom program.

The camera-raw supported applications list is somewhat misleading and not updated for ACR 8.7, obviously.
The misleading part is that PS-CS6/CC/CC-2014 all can be updated to ACR 8.7, even though the list lists ACR 8.3 for CC and CS6. The reason for the lower version for CC and CS6 is that both those have lower OS-version requirements (Vista/OSX 10.6) than ACR 8.7, and ACR 8.3 was the last version of ACR to work with the same lower version compatibility.
If you have PS-CS6 or newer and Win7 or OSX 10.7 or newer then you can update your camera raw plug-in to ACR 8.7, but if your OS is older or your version of PS is older then you can’t.

Final Cut Express 4 - Cannot monitor the sound during capture

When I capture (from SVHS via my ADVC300) I get the picture ok, but no audio. When the capture has completed, the audio is there.
Is this normal with FCE4? Is there no audio monitoring? Or is there some tweak that I need to make to enable it. I have searched hi and low but found nothing to help.
Others must be capturing - do you have audio during the capture process?

The final dedup ratio doesn't match the target dedupratio in vdbench configuration file

Hi,
I would like to fill-up the volumes with predefined dedup ratio using vdbench dedupratio and dedupunit values introduced in vdbench 5.03
I'm using 2 centos servers running vdbench50402 (also tried vdbench50403rc1). Below you can see the sample configuration file.
With all the dedup values i receive constantly 1.1 dedup ratio on the storage array. What are the possible reasons for incorrect final dedup ratio ??

'dedupunit=' is the key here.
The Vdbench dedup logic is based around "storage recognizes duplicate data blocks in chunks of 8k".
If your storage has a different 'dedup unit' Vdbench won't create the proper data patterns.
An other issue may be the FILLING and reporting of your luns: if you have a 10tb lun but Vdbench only writes 1tb, then your dedup will only include 1TB worth of Vdbench written data patterns.
Note: May I suggest in above parameter file to start using 'seekpct=eof'? Vdbench will then stop after the last block on all SDs has been written instead of your current 48 hours, which could result in rewriting the same blocks over and over again, because with seekpct=0 Vdbench just starts at the beginning again when it reaches the end.
Of course, if 48 hours is not enough elapsed time Vdbench will terminate BEFORE the last block has been written.
