Final Cut Express Export and DVD

I created a video with a dancer dressed in black with a black background. Lighting is good and video looks great on canvas. When I export I set compression at H.264 and I've also exported without any compression. Result after using iDVD is a video that doesn't have the same resolution seen on the canvas and hand motions leave a trail or a flutter effect (which isn't wanted). Any suggestions on how to transport the video so it's the same quality and without this "flutter" effect as seen on the canvas.

Use File>Export>Quicktime Movie to create a reference file and drop that into iDVD.
A reference file is one that is not self contained, simply don't check the self contained box in the export window.

Trouble making the text in scrolling credits (made on Final Cut Express) export clear and not fuzzy

I am having difficulty making the text in the scrolling credits in Final Cut Express clear and not fuzzy. I went under effects, then clicked video generators, then text, then scrolling text to get the scrolling credits working. I tried using the Chroma Keyer effect and the Color Key Effect. These work on captions on video and beginning titles but not the scrolling text. All of those were made on livetype so maybe that is why. I would really appreciate some help. I've been working on this all day. I was on the technical support line for about 40 minutes and they told me there is no more help given over the phone for Final Cut Express and that I should go on here and see if anyone can answer my question. I looked on all the forums and there was nothing on this subject. Thanks.

The software is not doing what it should be doing. We have all had this type of problem. It is nearly always somehow in the way the software is being used. Look at your added Chromakey and color key. You must be doing something that the FCE does not like. Open a new project and new sequence and try the exact same thing. (I use titles from LiveType and from the effects tab and have no problems)

Can't use Final Cut Express Export Using Quick Time Conversion with iDVD.

I am using iDVD 08v 7.0.4 and until 3 days ago I could import and create iDVD's using Final Cut Express export using Quick Time Conversion. There was an update that downloaded for iDVD. Since then, I can only use Final Cut Express Exports that is a self contained Quick Time Movie.
I have never had this kind of apple and apple problem. I am disappointed that I'm having apple issues like this.

Are you on latest 10.5.x release and latest FCE updates? Your info line says 10.5.1 and you didn't list FCE version. Not saying that will fix problem, but might help. You also might want to explain how you did your Quicktime conversion.

Final Cut Express 4 and avchd

I read an article that recommended your products so I'm hoping you can help me. I recently bought a Panasonic AC-90A HD video camera which uses AVCHD recording format. In the article it said that I should be able to upload into Final Cut Express 4 and edit. I can upload to the viewing screen, however, I can't seem to bring the clips into the bins which I need to do to edit. Would you be able to help finding the problem and clearing it so that I can edit.

Can you describe exactly what you are doing and where the problem occurs?
Can you verify you are using FCE version 4.01?
On your camera can you verify you are not shooting in the 1080 60P mode? 1080 60P AVCHD was not a standard when Apple discontinued and abandoned FCE, so that functionality was never added.

Final Cut Express to Timestamped DVD

I have a Final Cut Express project that is 20 minutes long. There are 140 different clips. Each clip ranges from 5 to 30sec. a piece. I need to export something that all the editors can view on their separate computers w/ chapter markers that have timestamps so they can tell me what/where to edit.
So far we have been doing it from FCE directly, but now that the video for this company is expanding I need to create a better workflow. One that multiple editors can view for instructing editing on videos.
I am a graphic designer working @ a publishing company (we are diving into video blind, not my choice). I've got as far as making over 20 videos for viewing online. Now they have footage from one of they conferences they host and all of them need to view it for editing. Then they can come back and say "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15 etc"... any suggestions?

FCE Timecode Display may display the current timecode at the playhead position, the start and end timecode of the clip, and the reel name. You may enter this name either during capture (reel name plus timecode may uniquely identify a frame in your movie library), or later in the browser while in list view. Unfortunately there is no way to display the clip name.
By using your own example it is not possible to display "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15" but only something like "00:15:03 - 00:18:04" and "00:04:03 - 00:15:15", etc.
Note however that using the default Type (Absolute Timecode) you might in fact get "02:15:03 - 02:18:04" and "03:04:03 - 03:15:15" if clip 3 starts at absolute 02:00:00 and clip 5 at absolute 03:00:00; in other words you might not need the clip name because the absolute timecode (also named source timecode) uniquely identifies the clip in the movie.
Some warnings.
- Burning many clips in iDVD is not an issue, as long as the whole movie is shorter than 2 hours: not a problem in your case (20 minutes, right ?).
- Instead adding a chapter name to each clip might raise problems: first there is a limit in iDVD I don't recall, but for sure less than 150...; second there is no automatic way to name the chapters: you have to type each name in each chapter marker.
- iDVD does not have a "time window", but if you burn the clips timecode using the filter above you'll be able to read it also in the iDVD preview window.
- Finally, after burning the DVD, you can always read the movie timecode while playing back the movie with DVD Player: just use the various controls made available by the player. This however is the new timecode of the movie, not the absolute/source timecode of the original clips.

Are there bugs between final cut express 2, and imovie?

i dont have the HD version of final cut express, just the original version. i imported some footage and exported as a H.264 high quality video, then put that to idvd...the final burned version looked like soo bad, it was like the horizonal lines of the video were blurred and studdering. i don't know. so i exported a full quality video and took it to imovie HD6 to do the H.264 compression, then took that to idvd and did a "best quality" burn and then the final output on the tv....looked like some frames were being skipped.....what the heck? Is this just a bug between final cut express 2.0 and idvd? maybe i should try capturing in imovie and sending that to idvd.....BUT I ALREADY EDITED IT! AHHHHHH

well i'm trying to save space on my HD, so i export to a H.264 file to keep on my drive, and when i need to make dvd's, i just compress the H.264 file, and it still looks awesome on a tv......it has worked a while ago, but all of a sudden it's giving me issues. i've tried every way

Final Cut Express HD and Animoto resolutions don't match

I imported a 720p video into Final Cut Express HD from Animoto.com (created online with Animoto and downloaded the MP4).
I added a song and a couple of bookend credits then exported to QuickTime Movie. The resolution of the FC export is significantly lower than the original MP4. Significantly lower. I've tried almost all the export settings in the "QuickTime Conversion" export, but nothing comes close to the resolution of the imported MP4.
Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong?

Sounds like your Easy Setup and clips are scrambled to me resulting in degraded footage.
BTW: MP4 should be transcoded to match an Easy Setup.
Codecs used in FCE are editing codecs, MP4 is for delivery.

Final Cut Express & Sony DCR DVD-405 Compatible?

Long story short . . .
Received a gift "Sony DCR DVD-405" (uses USB, NOT firewire) with intention of home video and family use. Happy with iMovie. No need for more.
But . . .
It is a major pain in the butt to get iMovie & camera to talk. Bought two 3rd party applications and still not happy.
Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?
I will have access to Final Cut Express for free through work in the Fall.

The 405 is a camera that produces Mpeg 2 files and that means no direct working with FCE, third party conversions required.
The HC96, being a Mini DV camera, will fit like a glove.
FCE works with DV, HDV or AVCHD (version 4 only using Intel chip Mac)

Final Cut Express 4 and I Movie

I am having trouble understanding how to work with videos on my new Mac. I do not understand how to import photos from my hard drive into I Movie or Final Cut Express. I also do not understand why I cannot download a slideshow DVD I created on my Windows Vista into Final Cut Express.

MPEG Streamclip can convert a VIDEO_TS folder to other formats. Use "Open DVD" from its "File" menu and choose the VIDEO_TS folder.

I work with an editor who uses Final Cut Express, but I can't open his projects with my FCP 4.5 system. Does Express export XML? And is that the solution?

Final Cut Express export options missing

I use the latest version of Final Cut Express on A G5 Quad and have recently lost certain options in the 'export using quicktime conversions' menu. I have always used Motion jpeg B but this is now missing along with Motion jpeg A!
This didn't coincide with any software installations or updates. And I've just run the Apple software update for FCE and Quicktime but there's still no difference.
Any ideas please??

Thanks Tom. The mjpeg compression options were there a week ago, I'll try installing the software on my laptop to see what happens. Anyhow I've noted that the stock agent will accept photo jpeg compression so perhaps I have nothing to worry about.

Final Cut Express - Exporting problem

I have used Final Cut Express for years with no problems. All of a sudden, when I export my sequence into a Quicktime Movie, the resulting movie has intermittent problems with photos. ALL my movie clips work fine. However, random pictures “get stuck” and will simply remain on screen wiping out several pictures that follow. The sound continues correctly, but the movie remains fixed on a given photo. At some point, the movie goes back to normal and pictures and clips show correctly, until the same problem repeats itself.
I tried removing the software from my system and restoring from scratch but that did not help. The problem is also not with a given picture or transition, because if I redo making the movie the problem will usually display itself at a different location. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be causing this problem?

Dragging the photos to your timeline should work, though the normal route is to import them and then drag them from the browser. User-installed plugins are located in three different places:
FxScript Plugins:
User > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Express User Data > Plugins
Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Final Cut Express Support > Plugins
FxPlug Plugins:
Macintosh HD > Library > Plug-Ins > FxPlug
You should copy all user-installed plugins to a different location before reinstalling, then place them back in their respective folders afterward.

Final Cut Express Exporting

I am wanting to export from Final Cut Express to a Hard Drive and playback through a network. Trying to achieve a 16:9 format in full screen. I can get 16:9 but only in the centre of the screen. i.e. Black around the picture. Any ideas greatly appricated.

Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 7

I have been working at school on Final Cut Pro 7
I just bought Final Cut Express 4 thinking it would be a cheaper way for me work at my home computer. However, when I open my Final Cut files (created in Pro 7) I get a message that says their format is too new for Final Cut Express 4.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it really not possible to go back and forth between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Express 4?
Is there some creative way of making this work? Help!

Unfortunately not. You can start the project in FCE. Open it FCP, but once it's saved in FCP, it will no longer open in FCE. (It's not supposed to anyway, though it does rarely in some cases where very little is done in FCP.)

Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.
