Final Cut Express export options missing

I use the latest version of Final Cut Express on A G5 Quad and have recently lost certain options in the 'export using quicktime conversions' menu. I have always used Motion jpeg B but this is now missing along with Motion jpeg A!
This didn't coincide with any software installations or updates. And I've just run the Apple software update for FCE and Quicktime but there's still no difference.
Any ideas please??
Jason

Thanks Tom. The mjpeg compression options were there a week ago, I'll try installing the software on my laptop to see what happens. Anyhow I've noted that the stock agent will accept photo jpeg compression so perhaps I have nothing to worry about.
I appreciate your taking the time to advise me.

  • Can't use Final Cut Express Export Using Quick Time Conversion with iDVD.

I am using iDVD 08v 7.0.4 and until 3 days ago I could import and create iDVD's using Final Cut Express export using Quick Time Conversion. There was an update that downloaded for iDVD. Since then, I can only use Final Cut Express Exports that is a self contained Quick Time Movie.
I have never had this kind of apple and apple problem. I am disappointed that I'm having apple issues like this.

Are you on latest 10.5.x release and latest FCE updates? Your info line says 10.5.1 and you didn't list FCE version. Not saying that will fix problem, but might help. You also might want to explain how you did your Quicktime conversion.

  • Does Final Cut Express export XML?

I work with an editor who uses Final Cut Express, but I can't open his projects with my FCP 4.5 system. Does Express export XML? And is that the solution?
    Thanks,

    Doesn't seem to.

  • Final Cut Express - Exporting problem

I have used Final Cut Express for years with no problems. All of a sudden, when I export my sequence into a Quicktime Movie, the resulting movie has intermittent problems with photos. ALL my movie clips work fine. However, random pictures “get stuck” and will simply remain on screen wiping out several pictures that follow. The sound continues correctly, but the movie remains fixed on a given photo. At some point, the movie goes back to normal and pictures and clips show correctly, until the same problem repeats itself.
I tried removing the software from my system and restoring from scratch but that did not help. The problem is also not with a given picture or transition, because if I redo making the movie the problem will usually display itself at a different location. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be causing this problem?

Dragging the photos to your timeline should work, though the normal route is to import them and then drag them from the browser. User-installed plugins are located in three different places:
    FxScript Plugins:
User > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Express User Data > Plugins
Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Final Cut Express Support > Plugins
    FxPlug Plugins:
    Macintosh HD > Library > Plug-Ins > FxPlug
You should copy all user-installed plugins to a different location before reinstalling, then place them back in their respective folders afterward.

  • Trouble making the text in scrolling credits (made on Final Cut Express) export clear and not fuzzy

I am having difficulty making the text in the scrolling credits in Final Cut Express clear and not fuzzy. I went under effects, then clicked video generators, then text, then scrolling text to get the scrolling credits working. I tried using the Chroma Keyer effect and the Color Key Effect. These work on captions on video and beginning titles but not the scrolling text. All of those were made on livetype so maybe that is why. I would really appreciate some help. I've been working on this all day. I was on the technical support line for about 40 minutes and they told me there is no more help given over the phone for Final Cut Express and that I should go on here and see if anyone can answer my question. I looked on all the forums and there was nothing on this subject. Thanks.

The software is not doing what it should be doing.  We have all had this type of problem.  It is nearly always somehow in the way the software is being used.  Look at your added Chromakey and color key.  You must be doing something that the FCE does not like.  Open a new project and new sequence and try the exact same thing.  (I use titles from LiveType and from the effects tab and have no problems)

  • Downgrading to iMovie from Final Cut Express - exporting?

My husband and I used to be into video editing before the kids were born. We have two 6 year old macbooks and one is dead and one is dying so we are forced to make a decision here on how to procede. My husband does one or two hobby type movies a year, but we mostly use our video editing software for home movies of the kids now. We don't have the money to spend on these things we used to, or the time to really be trying to tinker around with Final Cut anymore. So we decided to buy the $600.00 Mac Mini instead of a new laptop. We are thinking about switching back to iMovie as well, since buying the newer version of Final Cut will be pretty spendy, and iMovie seems to have come a long way since we last used it. We have a really old version of Final Cut right now, so I think upgrading would be necessary if we stick with Final Cut.
I am really confused about the new iMovie though. We have been using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and storing our movies on tape. I talked to the guy at the Apple store about the Mac Mini and asked why there was no 'export to camera' on the new iMovie (I'm actually using '09, but I am told 11 doesn't have it either). He looked stumped and actually said he had never heard of doing that and why would I want to do that. I asked where I was supposed to store our final movies and he said the hard drive. I was surprised and told him that hard drives crash, but tapes last much longer. He said tapes degrade, and I said yeah, but not for like 30 years or longer, our hard drives have only lasted on average 5 years. But later I was thinking that maybe it wasn't a bad idea to back up our tapes on the hard drive. We have a 1 TB external which we would probably fill when all is said and done. I am thinking of getting some cloud storage from BackBlaze as well, so I started thinking that maybe tapes are becoming obsolete and we should really do this HD thing (for now, until a better storage option comes out in a few years because HD's are obviously not ideal).
But then I started looking at the new iMovie and I have no idea how to export a final movie into a file that won't lose any quality. In final cut there is the 'self contained movie' setting which is a full quality version of the final movie. But in iMovie, I can't find an equivilent. How are you exporting your final movies in iMovie and where are you storing them? And if we downgrade to iMovie, will there be a loss in quality? I saw another thread that says that iMovie 11 is exporting movies that lose a lot of quality. Has Apple fixed this yet? When we started using iMovie years ago we were told that it imports and exports the exact same quality since it is all digital there would be no degradation. But now that I read that there is a loss of quality in the new iMovie I am nervous to downgrade to iMovie. Can anyone shed some light on these issues for me? Should we stick with Final Cut, or can we make iMovie work?

Is this a really slow board, or did I ask a silly question? Why no responses?

  • Final Cut Express export avi question!!

I'm really really really confused right now. I exported an AVI file of my movie in 16:9 in DVCPRO50 NTSC or something, I'm pretty sure that was it. The file was exported in 16:9 and it played in Quicktime in 16:9. I am not crazy, but I'm going crazy. I put this file into iDVD and it was 4:3. There were no options (that I found) to be able to change the video aspect ratio to 16:9, only the menu ratio. To make sure the video was 16:9 I checked the "get info" in finder and the preview video at the bottom was in 4:3. What!? That doesn't make any sense? I tested this and put an MPEG-4 16:9 file into iDVD. It read it fine and put it into the project in 16:9. I checked the info for that file as well and it was 16:9. I need to get this file into iDVD in 16:9 so it isn't smashed, it's supposed to be on TV. I'm really frustrated.

First of all, proper export for iDVD is as Quicktime Movie ... not ANY flavour of Quicktime conversion.
There are, I think, issues with some verisons of iDVD to get anamorphic video to work properly. There is a free program called Anamorphasizer but I think you need Quicktime Pro to work it.
There may another patch or two. Do a search of the iDVD Forum to get some ideas

  • Final Cut Express export 16:9 to iDVD

I've seen a lot of discussion about workarounds to get 16:9 aspect from FCE to iDVD, but have not seen any mention of chapter markers. My experience to date has been that I can export with chapter markers but lose the 16:9, or keep the 16:9 but lose the chapter markers. Anyone know how to keep both? Thanks.

In order to export chapter markers for iDVD usage, in FCE4 you must export using Export -> Quick Time movie. Not the Export -> using quick time conversion.
When in the export menu, make sure you have "marker set to Chapter markers".
Also about the flag on "Make movie self-contained", if you are going to burn your DVD from the same machine, you can avoid that option, so uncheck it: it will take less time and less space creating the MOV file.
The output MOV file is going to be seen squeezed in QT player and on iDVD.
You can follow this article that better explain why and how to solve the problem: http://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html

    Armando.

  • Final Cut Express - Export

I created a FCE movie exported for normal screen view but keep getting wide screen format?

  • Final Cut Express Export and DVD

I created a video with a dancer dressed in black with a black background. Lighting is good and video looks great on canvas. When I export I set compression at H.264 and I've also exported without any compression. Result after using iDVD is a video that doesn't have the same resolution seen on the canvas and hand motions leave a trail or a flutter effect (which isn't wanted). Any suggestions on how to transport the video so it's the same quality and without this "flutter" effect as seen on the canvas.

Use File>Export>Quicktime Movie to create a reference file and drop that into iDVD.
A reference file is one that is not self contained, simply don't check the self contained box in the export window.

  • Final Cut Express Export Issues

I'm new to video editing, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question - hopefully that makes it easy to answer...
I'm working on an educational video that mixes powerpoint slides (saved as 1440x1080 jpg images) with some live video that has been captured at 1920x1080. Since the slides look like crap when adjusted for the widescreen, I set my sequence settings in FCE to 1440x1080. I have adjusted the video accordingly and the sequences play perfectly (in a 4:3 ratio) in FCE. I'm now trying to get them exported and optimized for YouTube. I followed YouTube's recommendations: H.264, 30 fps, Auto data, Auto Keyframes, no frame reordering, optimize for streaming (fast start), AAC audio and resolution set to the video's original size (1440x1080). The quicktime conversion has HD 1440x1080 16:9 as a "size" selection, which corrects for the aspect ratio by stretching the video. If I enter a custom size of 1440x1080, which doesn't specify 16:9, it does the same thing. How do I get this thing to export as a 4:3 aspect ratio and stop stretching the video?
Thanks in advance for the help.

So, it seems the sequence size being 1440x1080 was correct in my sequence settings, but since I had the pixel settings to 1440x1080 HD, that really takes a 1440x1080 source and stretches it to 1920x1080 when it exports. So, setting the pixels to square seems to produce the output I was looking for - which is a 1440x1080 video. The video itself is not letterboxed when being played back on the computer (which was the goal). Obviously, if it was played back on an HDTV (or is uploaded to YouTube) then the letterbox would be added.

  • Final Cut Express Export problems

I am trying to export a .dv file into a .avi format but it only seems to export 9 mins of a 1 hr file.
    What am I doing wrong.

I am not sure what is going on, but i would be inclined to do the following,
    a) check to make sure that you have not set the in/out markers to limit the export to only 9 minutes.
    b) empty your render cache, you will need to do this manually via the finder.
    c) re-render the timeline.
    d) but to eliminate the .avi conversion, try exporting as a movie reference 1st, then using quicktime pro export to another format, such as mp4 and see if the same limitation happens. if not try again with the .avi export.

  • Xacti HD and Final Cut Express -- It used to work great! How do I go back?

I have a Sanyo Xacti HD700. It gives me 1280x720 MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 files, which my Mac just loves. I used to be able to quickly edit the clips together in Final Cut Express, export using complementary QuickTime settings (specifically, those recommended by Vimeo for HD playback), and get beautiful MP4 files, relatively quickly.
Then, one day, a friend needed me to edit a quick video using a DV camcorder. It was confusing as heck getting the footage into FCE, and not particularly elegant getting it out. But, the project was done overnight, I washed my hands of it, and wanted to get back to making beautiful MP4 files again, relatively quickly.
Except I can't! Now, for one, encoding takes hours. Hours! My source videos and export videos are very similar, yet I sit and watch as the estimate for completion actually goes up for an hour before slowly coming back down.
And frankly, that would be fine, except now my exported videos are the wrong size. They include letterboxes, and the video itself is squished, stretched. So I wait four times as long for a ghastly video. The best I could do is use the Quicktime export settings to "crop off" the letterboxing, but there's still some black bars and it's just not the same.
Here's how my videos used to look:
    http://vimeo.com/1067235
Here's how an exported video looks now:
    http://vimeo.com/1655414?pg=embed&sec=1655414
What happened? Out of the box, everything worked perfectly. Now, tainted with actual tape, Final Cut Express seems like it's running my videos through six extra wringers and giving me clips worse than I'd get just cut-and-paste editing the Xacti files in QuickTime Pro!
I Googled my brains out, and all I've learned is, if I had Final Cut Pro, "Project Settings" would have all the switches I need. Well, I don't have FCP, just FCE.
Somewhere, something was set that I want to unset. Can anyone help? Do I have to delete every trace of FCE and just reinstall?
    Mahalo for any advice!

It sounds like you didn't change the settings after you made the DV video. Did you switch it back to 1280x720 and make a new sequence in that format? Check item properties for the sequence you edited. What does it say? Also check item properties for any media you captured since working in DV.

  • Problem Installing final Cut Express HD 3.5

I am presently using Final Cut Express 2.0. Trying to upgrade to Final Cut Express HD 3.5. After the installer asks for the Product Serial#, it stops installing for lack of Hard drive space (never see a Custom install window where I could install Livetype, templates, loops, etc) on a separate disk.
I cloned my OS on a new drive. Tried to re-install Final Cut Express HD, The Installer never asked for the Product Serial # as before. It only loaded the LiveType, loops, templates, etc. The Final Cut Express HD option was blanked out. It never got loaded. Need Help. What am I doing wrong.? It seems that once you try to load FCE HD once, it won't let you do it again

    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual 500MHZ CPU

Thanks Tom. I did call Apple last night but they kept me waiting for so long that I gave up. I will try to call them again. But, I don't think any of the FCE HD files were loaded since that option was grayed out (could not be selected). The Re-install was on a new Hard drive and I could select only loops, templates, etc. for loading. It's like the old FCE 2 could not be upgraded at all. Could that be a possibility ? I thought one could upgrade from FCE 2 TO FCE HD. Am I wrong?
by the way, I read your book on FCE and I think it's great.
