Final Cut Express for intel

Help! Purchased Final Cut Express only last week , installed on May 17th only to find it does not run on intel machines...should have read the specs. News that 3.5 is released on May 18th...if only I had waited a few days. Phoned Apple and was told that I could download an upgrade, where is it???

As I mentioned in the other thread, if there is in fact a free update then it will appear in Software Update.
Although, I doubt that this would be the case given the jump from version 3 to version 3.5. if it went to 3.1 then sure, but the version jump is too big for me to think it were free.

Just go ahead and install FCS 3 normally.

Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

Hello,
I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?

Upgrade final cut pro for intel macbook pro

Hi I need help i have the old software for a G5 i just got a g4 intel macbook pro i install final cut express version 1 and then i got a upgrade to final cut pro 4, i install this software but runs too slow and there is te problem with agp card i know if you hit esc will run but too slow, which is the best upgrade that i can do for this laptop, since i call apple they advs me to go to http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/ and get the $199 upgrade of Final Cut Studio 5.1 Universal. will this work on my g5 and my new intel mac "will it run faster on the intel mac after doing the upgrade.

Optimal export from Canon Vixia HV30 via Final Cut Express for Blip.tv

I am looking to optimize the export of my videos from Final Cut Express (4.0.1). I shoot HD Widescreen on a Canon Vixia HV30. I've been having problems getting good quality in a smallish package.
For some reason, the videos come off the camera at the odd ratio of 496 x 279. This means I have to export them that size, but the final product ends up being huge. Literally, the screen is larger than the computer screen, and I have to view it on half size. I feel I could get more bang for my buck if these videos could be exported smaller initially.
Here are my settings for export (as Quicktime Movie with Quicktime conversion):
Compression: H.264
Quality: High
Key frame rate: 24
Encoding: Multi-pass
The only tweak I make is to set the kbits/sec to between 3000 and 3500, which gets me a decent looking video that's about two minutes long and between 40 and 70MB.
If I try to tweak the ratio or the format, the picture gets squeezed or the quality drops significantly. I've also been running into the problem of skipping playback on Blip.tv, which recently switched to a new version of Flash.
Any help on how to shrink the video and keep the quality?

Export to where? Where are you trying to get to? Export QuickTime Movie is the original converted FCE media file.

Using Final Cut Express for Ipod Touch

I'm using Final Cut Express to bring a group of MP4 videos together into one video - for viewing on an Ipod Touch G2. Any advise on the best settings to use.

So - I don't need to edit it, simply compile a bunch of videos together. The problem I have with iMovie 09 is that I need to see the list of video files by name. iMovie 09 won't present listings of video files by name, only by thumbnail.
To be honest - I'd rather use iMovie 09 as it seems to compile my files MUCH faster. I have a MacPro 2.33Mhz with 8 GB Ram, and a 24 hour video is taking up to 24 hours to compile.

No. Your older version will not run on your new Intel Mac using Rosetta. You must upgrade to 5.1.1., the universal version.

Final Cut Express Needs Update for MBP

Well the lovely people at the Apple store sold me Final Cut Express for my MBP and I'm getting the AGP error... finding out I'm not alone helps somewhat. Peter, that's actually a poor comment - as a customer of one of the more pricy brands, how much work do you have to invest to get basic Wall Mart style service? On apple.com they actually tell us how much faster Final Cut works on intel, so how much homework is required to find out it doesn't even run on it, yet? I bought my MacBook Pro expressly to let this application run on it - and my provider remembered the incompatibility immediately after I came back into the store, mumbling about AGP and stuff - look: I just want to edit films - not open source files and type things in there (and then FCE actually runs slower than on G4, as an aside). Your comment is wrong.

Final Cut express keeps crashing within 5 minutes of starting to render

Please help!
I am using Final cut express for this project. I created it on an Imac.
Specs: Quad Core; Intel Core I-7; 8GB Ram; 2.93 GHz. Media is stored on an external HD.
Whenever I select render timeline, the window appears and shows me the progress. But once I let it alone and leave the computer alone for anywhere from 3-10minutes, and I return, I am greeted with another window asking if I want to report this crash to Apple or reopen program. What on earth could be going wrong? I have used this imac before with no hassle at all when rendering, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to render be working now.
I have tried to render only a few minutes of the time line and it works okay without crashing, but when I select the 30minute project, it crashes within a few minutes.
I've tried a few things to try and identify the problem, but none of them have helped.
For instance, I completely turned off the screen saver. In the preferences, under power saver, I selected, computer sleep to "never"; Display sleep to "never"; I unchecked the "put the hard disk to sleep when possible."
And then I tried to only very small portion of the timeline. The results were as follows:
At around 5 minutes, the final cut crashes. I tried this process several times, and it seems to render up until the 5 minute limit and then crashes again.
Does anyone know what to do?
Any suggestions?

Final Cut Express HD Problem

I got Final Cut Express for my birthday in march. I bought a firewire cable to connect my DV Sony camcorder to my mac. The problem is when I click File and then capture, the footage won't import from the camcorder and when it plays its all shacky and disorted. I tried it with iMovie HD works like a charm. I did a FCE update to 3.5.1 still the same problem. I also Reinstalled OS X Tiger and updated it to 10.4.9 again. I heard about Macbooks having a similar problem it was something to do with an AGP graphics problem, but i'm using a Mac mini. Please help!!

Are you capturing to internal drive or ,as recommended, to a Mac OS Extended (not journaled) formatted external FireWire drive?
Have you tried 'trashing preferences'? (perform a search in this forum).

Final Cut Express & Sony DCR DVD-405 Compatible?

Long story short . . .
Received a gift "Sony DCR DVD-405" (uses USB, NOT firewire) with intention of home video and family use. Happy with iMovie. No need for more.
But . . .
It is a major pain in the butt to get iMovie & camera to talk. Bought two 3rd party applications and still not happy.
Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?
I will have access to Final Cut Express for free through work in the Fall.

The 405 is a camera that produces Mpeg 2 files and that means no direct working with FCE, third party conversions required.
The HC96, being a Mini DV camera, will fit like a glove.
FCE works with DV, HDV or AVCHD (version 4 only using Intel chip Mac)

Downloading Final Cut Express 2 update

Hello, this may seem like a simple question, but, how do I download the update for FCExpress without the internet. I have recently purchased a new imac and have not yet got the right cable to connect it to the internet. I am trying to use final cut express for the first time but as I don't have an AGP card it won't work. I'm on a PC at the moment and when I try to download the update it says file size form and there appears to be no download button. Is there any other way of downloading the update without my mac being connected?

It sounds like you have an Intel iMac. You can ignore the AGP error message, but you will find that FCE2 does not run well on the Intel iMacs.
You really should upgrade to FCE 3.5, which is the correct version for the Intel Macs. You will have to purchase it; it cannot be downloaded.

Can you edit AVCHD footage from a DSLR in Final Cut Express?

We're planning on using a DSLR that shoots AVCHD video as a B Camera on a shoot that will be edited in Final Cut Express for posting on You Tube. Will this work in Final Cut Express?

Yes, provided you convert the video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing it into FCE.
Many users like MPEG Streamclip for this purpose, and it does a great job.
If you are using a Canon DSLR there is a plugin for Final Cut Pro but not for Final Cut Express, so you have to convert the video yourself before importing into FCE. (In Final Cut Pro, the EOS E1 plugin allows you to directly Log & Transfer from the 5D and 7D).

Final Cut Express as Offline - Final Cut Studio 2 as Online?

Is it possible to use FInal Cut Express for offline editing and then replace the media with HD versions for online editing in Final Cut Pro?
Example of our proposed Workflow:
1. Capture HDCam footage from CineAlta Camera into Final Cut Studio 2 at DVCProHD 1080i60.
2. Use Media Manager to create a copy of the project while downconverting media to DV.
3. Transfer project folder to other Mac running FC Express. Create FCE project file and create an edit using DV footage.
(here's where I'm uncertain)
4. Can FC Express export EDL's or in some way get that edit back into FC Pro, where I can relink back to the DVCProHD media?

Well, I gained access to a computer running FCE 4 and created a test project. When I try to open in in FCP 6.0.1 I get a message stating that the file format is "too new" for this version of FCP.
I guess I need to try FCE HD 3.5, but it will not run on any computer without an AGP graphics card.
This shouldn't be this troublesome, should it?

Trouble capturing to Final Cut Express HD 3

Upgraded to Leopard last night and also added Final Cut Express HD 3. I have been using Final Cut Express for about 4 years and using my Canon XL1 & GL1 to capture with no problems. After upgrades I hooked up my Canon XHA1 (firewire)
and wanted to capture some HD footage to play with the new stuff.
When I go to capture (using capture screen control buttons), the camera starts and the capture screen stays black for about 5 seconds then stops camera. VTR at bottom of screen is showing connected. I've tried many things with no results. played with camera settings. Need some help.

Do a forum search for QuickTime 7.3. It doesn't work with FCE versions 3.5 or older.
