Final cut express gives a jittery image on my G5 iMac

I asked a similar question before and got some useful input but the problem still exists. When i enter a still image then zoom in with the motion tools in FCE the image moves around unevenly in the frame. When I Render the images in the Timeline, the problem gets even worse. I tried this with the same images on my old G4 450 with FCP 1.2 and it worked just fine- the way it's supposed to. Could there be a system problem with my iMac G5?

First I tried flicker filter, and it helped some of the photos, but others became even worse! (The entire image shakes now instead of just portions.) I removed the flicker filter and tried the de-interlace filter, and that produced about the same results. I would try editing the photos separately in Adobe Photoshop, but before I delve into that I would like to set up an external video monitor. Unfortunately I've wasted about two days, and I can't seem to get it to work. I first tried by connecting the iMac to a Sony camcorder and connecting the camcorder to the video port on my television. No joy. Then I tried connecting the iMac via a mini-DVI to video adapter to my television. I thought my old television might be the problem, so I connected instead to the video port on a projector, and it still didn't work! I've changed the display settings and deleted certain preferences files, to no avail. My iMac doesn't seem to recognize the external display. I'm beginning to doubt this Mac purchase. Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • HDR CX7 with Final Cut Express gives me error message

A couple of days ago I got Final Cut Express 4. When I tried to log and transfer clips with my Sony Handycam HDR-CX7, all the clips were there on the Log and Transfer screen and I could play them and all, but when I added them to my queue, it loaded for a few seconds and then an error message came up in the status screen with a little red exclamation mark. It said, "Error: No Data" My camera works fine with iMovie, but final cut won't work with it. HELP!

There are a number of different causes for the red exclamation mark. Please to a forum search and see if anything helps you.

  • Language Choice with Final Cut Express ...

    Hello,
Like many things Mac-wise (Leopard etc), does Final Cut Express give a language option during the instal?
I am in France and would like to have the programme running in English - but those at the Apple store are unsure. I bought Leopard from them and they didn't know whether it was available in English. It turned out that there is a language option ... is that the case with Final Cut Express?
Thanks for your time and help ...

You have the choice of English, French, German and Japanese.
I can't remember whether you get the option to choose the language during installation, but you definitely do afterwards.
You control click the FCE icon and select "Get Info".
    Then open the Language menu.

  • Final Cut Express, Preview not working in Capture

I've just purchased Final Cut Express, and have installed it in my G5 iMac. When I try to download film from my Sony TRV 17, I am unable to do so. The preview screen has a message "Preview Disabled", and I am unable to capture anything. The capture controls seem to control the recorder just fine. Anyone have a simple answer?

I'd tried running the camera into the computer, and only using the internal hard drive, no change.
When the camera is off and I start the program I get a message stating that the camera is not connected, but as soon as I turn the VCR on and hit the retry button, the program starts. Which easy set up option should I use if not FW basic?
Try daisy-chaining the camera to the drive. Do not
use FW basic with that camera. Make sure the camera
is turned on in VCR mode, and reboot. Launch the
application. Does it see the camera at start up? If
not, try it with the LaCie disconnected, and see if
it works directly into the computer.

  • Final Cut Express HD on Intel? When & how?

I bought a Mac mini to play about with, and a few days later bought Final Cut Express HD - the full product reduced to UK £99 at my local John Lewis store. Bargain! I dipped my toes in it and found it very much like Adobe Premiere on the PC, but better obviously.
Within a couple of weeks I decided to take the plunge, sold all my PC kit on Ebay and upgraded to a 20" iMac Intel - the Apple Store did a full refund on my Mac mini, no questions asked. They are such nice people
However, I've since read that Final Cut Express HD won't work on the Intel iMacs, probably not even under Rosetta, and that I'll have to wait until the next feature release for the Intel coded one. There are rumours that this release will be mid-March, which is great, but how will this 'crossgrade' be deployed?
Will it be in the format of a retail boxed upgrade package for existing users making the 'switch-within-the-switch' to Intel-based Macs?
Or perhaps even a free download and/or mailed-out disk for existing users?
Or will it only be sold as a full-priced retail boxed package?
I'm just wondering if it is worth me keeping hold of the version I've got, or trying to sell it on Ebay - I'll probably get what I paid for it, especially as I hadn't registered it with Apple.
Anybody got any inside knowledge on the deployment?
    cheers,
    iMark.
    20" iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I guess I'm lucky in that, after ten years spent under a desk poking around inside boring beige boxes, I've come fresh from the big bad world of Windows PCs straight into the brave new world of Mac Intel. Apart from my minor but very fulfilling diversion with the Mac mini, this is my first ever Apple computer, so I don't come laden down with the expectations for old software.
Right now I'm happy to play with the included apps. And I don't mean the trial of Office 2004. That got dumped straight away
I've hardly looked at Garageband and iWeb, but iMovie is a breeze and great for quick knockups - and the way it integrates with iDVD is a joy... but I am itching to properly get underway with Final Cut Express.
Having said that, I've got all five Myst games in dual PC/Mac format... and I was hoping to be able to carry on playing them but it seems my Intel iMac (that still sounds so wrong!) doesn't like the installs. A shame, I was just getting into End Of Ages when I ebayed my PCs.
But my god... who cares! Just look at this big white thing sitting on my desk in front of me. It's so... beautiful. It's the most beautiful thing I have ever owned, materially speaking. And I can't believe it's mine! Somebody pinch me.
Anyway, if anyone does come up with any answers or any wandering Apple executive happens to toddle along this way and is feeling generous please do post it here.
    Many thanks.

  • Shake vs final cut express

    Hi all,
Is shake a comparable program to final cut express?? I just bought an apple iMac and I'm trying to decide what program to use for all my family video. It sounds like shake is a nice program. Is it made by Apple or did they sell it? If I wanted to not use iMove 08/09 because of quality issues, is Shake a viable program to use such as Final cut express?
    Thanks much

Shake and FCE are completely different applications.
Shake is designed for compositing (think of it as Photoshop for video) and does not have editing functionality. It also has a rather steep learning curve.
I would recommend FCE for what you wish to do.

  • White box around png images in Final Cut Express 4.0

I was putting in some muzzle flashes into my video with final cut express 4.0, they were png images and there was a white box around the muzzle flash after i used the composite mode screen effect, if anybody knows what the problem is i could use the help.

I inserted a 3D bullet into my movie and it had a black background. I used Composite Screen and it it worked, but it made the bullet slightly transparent. What should I do?

  • Projecting still images using final cut express

Maybe someone can answer this tricky question. We need to project a FCE movie that has photoshop still images imported into it, but these photoshop images (which appear normal on the computer screen), are distorted in the projection. They look squashed horizontally. In fact the still image that we made with photoshop and imported into final cut needs to be projected on a wall to match a four foot tall section of the wall, so we need get the size exact. That is the reason why we cannot have any distortion.
We have read that still images imported into final cut should be 720 by 480 pixels to avoid distortion, but that produces an even more squashed image, and this in pixels, that determined the size of the image, so how would we determined the size without affecting the pixels? The distance between the projector and the wall is already fixed and we cannot move it. Does anyone know how to maintain the original proportions of a still image imported into FCE for projection? Thank so much.

Hi, thanks you for your quick answer. We used photoshop elements 4.0 (for Mac) and Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 (Mac). The still image that we bring into FE is a mask, it has a transparency so I guessed is layered. When we bring it into FE appears as sequence so we open it into a timeline and bring it back to the browser so it can be used as a still image. The movie is projected as DVD on the wall.

  • How do I export a Final Cut Express 4 movie using quick time conversion without stretching the image?

I have created a movie in Final Cut Express 4 using videos and still photos of various aspect ratios and resolutions.  Some of the photos are verticals.  When I try to use File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion, my images end up being stretched horizontally when the video is finally processed.  I have tried preserving the aspect ratio but the video still ends up stretched horizontally.  What should my settings be in Quick time conversion?  I just want to make a video for YouTube.
    Thanks.  -Bob

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Final Cut Express 4 Rendering of Still images

I recently upgraded to Final Cut Express HD. Now, whenever I bring in still images, they come in as unrendered. Before, they would still be able to preview. If I do pan and zooms, it has to rerender. Is there anyway I can bring back the preview mode, as this will seriously slow my work.

Switch your timeline's RT popup to Unlimited RT. Uncheck the box for warn next time if/when you get a dropped frame dialog box.

  • Rendering a jpeg image in Final Cut Express

I have a jpeg image which shows up correctly in the captured bin of Final Cut Express once it is imported, but it will not render properly. The background is black in the viewer, and the image(jpeg) in the center of the screen is a bright green square.
Im able to add motion to the image, but it does not show up in the viewer as the image, it is only a green square.
Can this be fixed in FCE?
The original file is from an email, probably from a pc, does this cause compatibitity issues?

If you have access to an image editing tool such as photoshop, I would advice you import the image into Phototshop and save it in a different format e.g, GIF format and re-import it into Final Cut Express HD. This could solve your rendering problem if all you need is to use a Still image.

  • Final Cut Express v3.5 HD - Setup/Config. Tips

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some assistance regarding the setup of Final Cut Express HD v3.5. on my system I have downloaded the Apple "on-line" FCE documentation, but I thought I would try gaining some "real-life" insight about installing and cofiguring FCE from this discussion board, as I'm new to Final Cut Express. I have used other NLEs (Pinnacle, Avid, etc.) so I'm familiar with a few editors, in general.
My system is: iMac 2.8 Ghz Extreme with 4GB memory and a 500GB internal disk. I have (1) LaCie 250GB External drive via 1394 Firewire (my video ingest drive) and (1) Western Digital 500GB USB External Disk used for content (video, images, graphics, Digital Juice, etc.). Lastly, I have an old MovieBox Deluxe (Video Capture/Convertor) via 1394 port. I doubt it will work with the iMac, as it is proprietary Avid/Pinnacle hardware.
I was going to use my 500GB external drive as my "scratch" drive and leave everything else alone for now. The iMac will be a standalone video editing system...no other software loaded on it, except what comes loaded as the standard (OS X 10.4.10, iLife, Safari, etc.)
My hope is to leave the internal drive (loaded with FCE) alone. Should I save my FCE projects to the internal drive? or save to an external?
Is this how I should setup the drives, etc.? Or do something different?
I really appreciate your advice and help, as I'm a "newby" to the discussions boards. I finally got tired of doing everything with a WinTel box. I saw the light!
    Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Everyone!
Regarding setup and config of FCE, I've been reading several discussions about scratch drives. While I plan to use one of my external drives as the scratch drive and the other as my video ingest drive, should I SAVE my projects to the internal 300GB drive which FCE resides? or should I SAVE projects to a different drive?
I'm trying my best to setup my iMac so FCE and the drive it resides on is the LEAST disturbed (with other content or files) to prevent fragmentation. So my media content (i.e. Digital Juice) is on a seperate drive, video ingest, yet, on another seperate drive, etc., etc. Without beating the horse, what is the BEST way to setup my iMac? I guess I've been reading too many horror-stories about scratch drives, conflicts, etc.
After reading several messges, I notice many discussions about still photo images (with/without transitions) becoming "jittery" upon render completion in FCE and FCP/Studio? Are still images a problem for FCE 3.5? or are these sporadic, based on a mac users configuration and what is being accomplished?
Lastly, what are the necessary utilities (convertors, etc.) to purchase in support of editing with FCE? I see lots of utilities recommended for various things and I want to make sure I get the best utilities.
    Thanks!

  • Final Cut Express not recognizing firewire

I recently deleted my hardrive on my '04 iBook, and reinstalled all my software. I have Final Cut Express version 2.0.2, and upon reinstalling it, and firing it up for the first time, with my XL2 on and attached via firewire, the "External A/V" window pops up, and says "Unable to locate the following devices..." referring to the firewire connection. Now that always pops up when nothing's plugged in that's turned on, but this is the first time it's ever done this when my camera is plugged in and on. I went through every NTSC firewire setting on the "Easy Setup" window, but nothing changed. iMovie reads my XL2 just fine with the same firewire cable. This problem did not occur before I clean out my hardrive, and reinstalled everything. But prior to reinstallation my "capture" function was freezing up after 5 minutes, and said my "startup disc" was full. Any ideas on what the current problems is?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a macbook pro 2.4 GHz, using a Canon HV20. When I enter FCE is prompts me saying "Unable to locate following device: Apple Firewire NTSC." However using imovie, everything works fine, I'm able to capture images simply by turning on my camera.
Not sure if its a problem with my FCE, because I've tried to edit in FCE using video from imovie and it gives me an error message constantly.
    any ideas?
