Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1.1

Hi,
I have a client with both of these installed on the same machine (running 10.4.6).
When they try and launch either application, the splash screen comes up, loading various filters, etc. then they get an error message:
"File Error: A file of this name already exists" "OK"
Clicking "OK" closes the app.
Any idea:
1. What the file in question is?
2. Can it be deleted to let the app run?
3. Can Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1.1 be used on the same machine?
I'll post this on the Final Cut Pro thread too (but with the order reversed).

1. No idea.
2. Depends what the file is.
3. Yes. Though I've never tried to run them at the same time.

  • Differences between Final Cut Express HD 3.5 and Final Cut Studio 5.1

    Hi, all,
Unfortunately, I didn't find a list of what the main differences are between those two products on the Apple website - only about the latest versions of the programs.
Since I consider buying a used version of Final Cut Studio 5.1, I would appreciate if someone could give me an idea of what the main features are that come along with FCP as compared to FCE.
I am shooting HD with Canon HV30, so I am primarily interested in the HD features. Thanks a lot!
    Cheers,
    M.

Filters in FCE process video on a field-by-field basis; in FCE, only Generators process video on a full-frame basis, i.e. in considering both fields of each frame.  By contrast, FCP allows you to choose how Filters process video:  field-by-field or full-frame.  For interlaced playback (e.g., on an NTSC monitor), field-by-field processing may be best, but not necessarily; but for progressive scan playback (e.g., on a flat screen TV, as well as on a computer monitor), video that was shot in progressive mode needs to be processed on a full-frame basis in order to avoid getting artifacts -- at least when applying certain effects.
In short, depending on the mode in which the video was shot, depending on the playback mode, and depending on the effect that you are applying, you may need to control how the corresponding Filter processes video (field-by-field or full-frame), and you can do this only in FCP.
This is also true when applying certain effects that are not explicitly labeled as "Filters", e.g., zoom.  For example, if you use FCE to zoom in, over time, on video, the second field of each frame will be zoomed in slightly more than the first (since in essence, FCE "assumes" that the footage was shot in interlaced mode and that therefore, the second field was captured later in time than the first).  Consequently, during playback on a flat screen TV, where both fields are displayed simultaneously, the fields will be shifted left-right with respect to one another, which may be quite noticeable.

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • When I move high quality clips into my timeline in Final Cut Express HD, they look and export low quality. I have tried converting the clips and de-interlacing them, but they always look the same, What is the problem? Thanks so much.

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • How do I open my Final Cut Express 4.0 files in Final Cut Pro 10.1.3?

    Hello,
I used Final Cut Pro when I was in college and when I graduated in 2010, I bought Final Cut Express 4.0. I recently bought Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 two days ago and I am having trouble opening up my old Final Cut Express 4.0 files. When I do go to open up these files they only open up with Final Cut Express and I always get the message: file's format is too new for this version of the application.
How do I open these Final Cut Express 4.0 files in Final Cut Pro 10.1.3?
    Thank you!
    Anna

TThere is no way to go directly from FCE to FCPX. If you know somehow who has FCP7, they can open the FCE projects and export XML files. These can be converted to FCPX XML format using the 7toX utility.

  • FInal Cut Express HD 3.0 and Tiger 10.4.6

I recently upgraded from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.6 on my 1.25ghz g4 laptop with 1.2gb RAM and Final Cut Express HD 3.0 is misbehaving. It quits when trying to capture (I had to capture in imovie and import the imovie file) and stutters in playback and won't render out audio. I'm using QT7.1.3
Any ideas why? I tried to upgrade to FCE HD 3.0.1 but it wouldn't let me saying that my computer didn't need this upgrade.
Do I have to get FCE HD 3.5 ?

    Try this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
and also try to trash your preferences:

  • Help!  Final Cut Express crashes on Log and Transfer

    Hi,
I am using a Canon Vixia HFS20 (AVCHD) and a Mac Book Pro (running snow leopard) , with a 1 tb My Book as scratch disk.
    I have upgraded the software.
In Easy Setup, I selected AVCHD 1920x1080i60, after checking the camera and seeing that it is recording with 60i.
Log and Transfer opens, but then final cut express immediately crashes.
Please advise! Thank you so much,
    Anne

What happens if you remove the external drive and try a test capture to the MAC directly?
How is the external connected? eg. USB
Is the external formatted to MAC OS Extended?

  • Final Cut Express 2.0.3 and missing AGP graphic card

I had Final Cut Express 2.0.3 in my older G4 PPC Tower. But now that I've installed FCE 2.0.3 in my new iMac I get an error message telling me I need an AGP graphic card for the program to work.
    What's the deal?
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Panther

Have a read of this thread (link).
FCE 2 is a PowerPC application so you won't get great performance through Rosetta. FCE 2 is looking for AGP graphics which were standard at the time but no longer present. You should look at upgrading (link) for best performance.

  • Final Cut Express not opening, error says final FCE disks are missing.

    Hi there,
Recently I got a WD Fire Wire 800 Hard drive for christmas so I could move all of my final cut projects over to the HD.
When I moved my final cut express documents including all of the folders it now says this error.
    To preserve the integrity of the data used by final cut express, it is necessary to ensure the existence of the following paths;
    - My HDD Chris is missing
Then it gives me the option to reset scratch disks, check again or quit.
So I'm not sure what I do.
Should I simply move back all the folders and documents that I moved to my hard drive (btw I tried this but it still gave the same error message). I have deleted final cut express 4.1 and re installed 4.0 to see if it works but it didn't and has the same error message.
    Any tips would be helpful.
    Chees, Chris.

I can't even open FCE any more because I have moved everything onto the external hard drive including software 'everything'.
You moved the software? You can't do that. That's fatal. The software must be on the system drive as it requires system resources. Move the application called Final Cut Express back into the top level of the Applications folder. Do it move it, rename it, or put it inside a folder.
Do not assign the scratch disk to a folder anywhere. If you want the scratch disk to be on your external drive select the top level of the external drive. FCE will create the folders it needs in that location.
    Hi,
When you say move the application final cut express into the application folder.
Do you mean move my folder of final cut express that I moved onto my HDD?
If so it's copying the 20GB folder as I speak. Hopefully fixes this frustrating problem..
    Cheers, Chris.

  • Installing Final Cut Express 2.0.2 On to MacBook Pro

Having just received my new MacBook Pro and after installing Final Cut Express 2.0.2 onto it I get the error message:
    Configuration error

    • AGP graphics card.
The laptop is the top spec version just out and fully rammed up!
    Can anyone help?
    Sorry-just read the explanation underneath

    Coyboy,
    Welcome to the forum.
One of the great things about this very active forum is that first time users almost always are asking about well known problems. This is to your great advantage.
There is a search function located in the upper right portion of the window that works quite well. Had you typed in AGP installation error or something like that you would have hit upon dozens of threads that are all about your issue.
    For example this one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=411833&tstart=0
Come often, learn to search, read the threads, learn lots.

  • Final Cut Express 3.5 vs. Final Cut Express 4?

I am looking at purchasing Final Cut Express for my company. We have iMovie 6 and have been doing some client YouTube videos using it. We'd like to do more with our video editing but don't feel the need for Final Cut Pro, so FCE seemed like good compromise.
What I'm trying to figure out is which is the better option for us, FCE 3.5 or 4. I've read that 4 does not include something called Soundtrack, but that you can do voiceovers and adjust/fix audio. Can you put music MP3s into your video in FCE4 like you can in iMovie? Or would we need Soundtrack for that?

FCE4 can handle audio like any video-editing app, but it isn't a designated audio program like Soundtrack or Logic. As Tom said, all audio should be 12-bit or 16-bit AIFF before importing.
Note: if you're planning on shooting AVCHD or editing on a machine running Snow Leopard, FCE4 is the only supported version.

  • Final Cut Express (FCE) 1.0 and Tiger 10.4.4--End of my rope...

So I know it's ridiculous that I haven't upgraded from 1.0, but I recently upgraded to Tiger and I am about ready to go PC because of all of the problems it has created--mostly with Final Cut.
I've tried everything in all of the posts, but FCE 1 still won't capture in Tiger. I deleted receipts for QT, upgraded to 7.0.4, re-installed FCE 1. Nothing.
What's the final verdict? Will FCE 1 just never work with Tiger?
I really hate how Apple does this. To use Toast 7 I needed 10.4, now becaue I have 10.4, I have to buy FCE HD, along with iLife again so that everything will work.
If anyone ever figured anything out, let me know. Otherwise I guess I'll just pony up the dough again to update yet another program that isn't compatible. This can't be an oversight on Apple's part. It must be an intentional marketing tactic, because capturing is one of the fundamental functions of FCE.

FWIW, Tiger, FCE 2, and QuickTime 7 do not play nice together
I had forgotten this thread, but since there is activity that brought it back to my attention, I have more information to share:
Tiger, FCE 2, and QuickTime 7 actually do "play nice" and work together great. I tracked my problem down to the means I was using to capture: Formac Studio TVR. The Formac software captures at a large data rate that FCE2/QT7 have trouble with. The Tiger/FCE 2/QuickTime7 work-around I have for this is to render any raw DV files I want to edit before I start. This drops the data rate to one that does not cause problems.
Meantime, I continue to try for a response out of Formac about tweaking their software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Final Cut Express 3.0.1 and 10.4.10?

I am currently running 10.4.8. I did not upgrade to 10.4.9 because of people having problems importing their video.
Has anyone upgraded to 10.4.10 and still using Express 3.01.
I know I should upgrade to Express 3.5, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
    Chris

I see that apple has this posted:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305284
so, that sounds like that it is fixed, but I would like to see if anyone else is working OK. Also, what version of QuickTime. I have stayed with 7.1.6.
Is is OK to go to 10.4.10 and QT 7.2 with FCE 3.0.1?

  • Final Cut Express HD, Logic 8 and Euphonix MC control and MC mix

    Hi all,
    Here are a question:
    1. Can I make MC control run FCE as it does with FCP?

    No. FCE has no mixer.

  • Latest final cut express hd as opposed to final cut pro 4

Has anybody out there experience both with the new fce and fcp4? This might sound a silly question to some(not to me, though...): Is fce a lot more restricted than fcp4? I'm working on a budget and are still in 2 minds whether to rob a bank and get FCStudio 2 or just use FCE...(which runs on Macbook as opposed to MBPro). The reviews for FCE sound all very reassuring.
I would like to know whether it allows the following: create 3-fold split screens? subtitling? scaling of image size? Ken Burns effect(i.e. panning of stills)?
Can anybody sumup in a nutshell in how far FCE is more restricted than FCP?
How about dvd designs? I'm really only after DVDPro? Is there any other way of getting it or alternative software that is slightly more complex than iDVD?
    Thanks for any comments!!!

The three primary functions that are missing in FCE are no batch capture, no timecode displayed in the application, and no media manager. In addition it is restricted to working in DV or HDV only. Everything you mentioned is available in FCE as in FCP, the same way.
There is no DVDSP however, but if you have that already then you can use it. Or you can use iDVD, which ia really pretty good for most DVD needs.
