Final Cut Express HD and Mac Pro Issue

Howdy all,
I have Final Cut Express HD version 3.0 (LAST year's version not this year's version). I've been using it for some time now on my G4 iMac, but just acquired a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro. I copied over the application and support files to the Mac Pro but when I try to run the program I get an error that I don't have an AGP graphics card. I tried following the advice in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=445909&tstart=60
But none of those suggestions work. Hitting the escape key just stops the program. Changing the plist file does nothing. The program attempts to start and then just stops.
I'd really rather not go out and buy this year's copy if I don't have to as Apple is probably going to be releasing a new version in a couple months anyhow and then I'll upgrade.
Please let me know if there is a work around for this. I would have posted in the other thread so as to not start a duplicate thread, but it had already been archived.
Thanks,
Jon

if the OP used Migration Assistant or disk cloning
software to make a copy oif his system drive it is
possible to copy the app without using the
installation disks, although these methods of
transferring apps from PowerPC to Intel macs will
undoubtedly cause problems.
This doesn't make sense now that I think about it. If the Application is purely a PowerPC app, then copying to an Intel machine it or re-installing it from scratch should make no difference. The same stuff is all going to be installed anyhow.
To Ian,
It can be copied w/o installing, of that I am sure. You can't just copy the application package though. There's a number of support folders in both the /Library directory and ~/Library directory. Somewhere in there is the licensing info.
Anyhow, I'll try deleting all the plist files you suggest and starting over. If I have to, I will call Apple to see about getting my orignal code. After all, I have registered and they should be able to see each product I have purchased...

  • How can I use Final Cut Express in a Mac Pro

I want to know how could I use my Final Cut Express HD programm (Version 3) in my new Mac Pro.

FCE 3.0 was not designed to work with Intel based Macs when they were introduced years ago so you have no chance with a modern Mac.
You must upgrade to FCE 4 unless you want to move onto Final Cut Pro X which is designed to be used with the latest technology.
Final Cut Studio 3 will also work OK.

  • Final Cut Studio 7 and Mac Pro RAID recommendations

    I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) with 4 x 750gb SATA drives and 1 Promise DS4600 eSATA, decked out with 4 x 1TB 7200 RPM drives.
I am considering the following setup for the disks. I am trying to make sure there is enough redundancy in the setup to survive a hard drive failure and enough performance to satisfy edit and uncompressed HD capture needs over a BlackMagic Intensity card (120mb/s required):
    1 x 750gb RAID1 System Drive - Macintosh HD (internal drives 1 & 2), block size 32kb
    1 x 750gb RAID1 for FCP Scratch - ScratchDisk (internal drives 3 & 4), block size 128kb
    1 x 2tb RAID10 for FCP capture - FCP Capture (Promise DS4600), block size 128kb over eSATA
…purchase something for Time Machine backup or use CCC (external firewire800)
Anything I've missed or anything I should or should not do? Thanks for the input.

I know of audio folks that use mirror for live recording and editing, yes, but there they need multiple drives and to spread out their tracks and libraries and plug-ins, not HD video.
There are excellent RAID6 card setups that make sense. And stick with quality drives.
Audio high-end anyway use to mean SCSI and FibreChannel.
So yes, move project files to RAID6 would be a good move. And do 'torture' the drives to death - BEFORE they are used - for like a week at least, to work and break them in and iron out any bugs.
Use Enterprise RAID Enabled drives, stay off bleeding edge and use safe trusted and reliable equipment (drives, controller, software). One of the real "killers" is if you need new hardware, are forced into an OS that hasn't had a year of testing and your applications usually take 6-12 months (or more) to really be certified.
There aren't a lot of RAID6 controllers, but there are some, and some SAS/SATA.

  • Final Cut Express 4 and avchd

I read an article that recommended your products so I'm hoping you can help me.  I recently bought a Panasonic AC-90A HD video camera which uses AVCHD recording format. In the article it said that I should be able to upload into Final Cut Express 4 and edit. I can upload to the viewing screen, however, I can't seem to bring the clips into the bins which I need to do to edit. Would you be able to help finding the problem and clearing it so that I can edit.
    Thank you,
    John

This is a user to user forum. You are not addressing Apple here.
Can you describe exactly what you are doing and where the problem occurs?
Can you verify you are using FCE version 4.01?
On your camera can you verify you are not shooting in the 1080 60P mode? 1080 60P AVCHD was not a standard when Apple discontinued and abandoned FCE, so that functionality was never added.

  • Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

  • Final Cut Express HD and the Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro along with final cut express HD. After purchase I read that FCE HD won't work with the macbook pro. I was hoping to see if anyone knew if they were coming out with an upgrade to the universal version like they are with Final Cut Pro.
Intel based macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

That will not work. Ian's solution is for dual core G5s and PCIe based iMacs. It does not address Intel based machines like the 2006 iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines will have to wait till the end of March for the release of new Universal Binary software to run on them. It's possible FCE3 will never run and will need to be upgraded to another version. If you recently purchased FCE HD to run it on this new computer, I'd suggest, if you can, to return it until the position on the new software becomes clear.

  • Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 7

I have been working at school on Final Cut Pro 7
I just bought Final Cut Express 4 thinking it would be a cheaper way for me work at my home computer. However, when I open my Final Cut files (created in Pro 7) I get a message that says their format is too new for Final Cut Express 4.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it really not possible to go back and forth between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Express 4?
Is there some creative way of making this work? Help!

Unfortunately not. You can start the project in FCE. Open it FCP, but once it's saved in FCP, it will no longer open in FCE. (It's not supposed to anyway, though it does rarely in some cases where very little is done in FCP.)

  • Final cut express versus Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5

    Hi
Resently I bought a Mac Pro and Final cut express.
In the past I used Premiere Pro 1.5. When my project was finisched i wrote it back to tape as a Microsoft DV avi file. Is it possible to create a Microsoft DV avi file in Final Cut Express ?
I'll aske this because this tape is transported to the studio and imported into Adobe Premiere 6.0.
    thanks in advance
    Tonnie
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9)
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Once it's on tape it's back in DV format and is no longer an AVI or .mov or any other computer format. If the material is put back on tape it can be captured from the camera or deck into Premiere in whatever format that uses.

  • Final Cut Express 4 and MacOS 10.6?

I just bought the new Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard and Final Cut Express 4.
Thus far, I've been running MacOS 10.4.11 on my MacBook Pro. I have no experience with 10.5 or 10.6.
I have yet to receive shipment of either software package. Is there anything I should know about when installing Final Cut Express on a Snow Leopard system? (NOTE: I am having this software installed after also having an MCE Technologies 500 GB hard drive also installed, so this will all be a clean install.)
I have used Final Cut Pro 4.5 before, but never Express.

    Walt,
I don't think FCE comes with QT pro. I already had QT pro when I loaded FCE so I am not 100 % certain.
Do you have quicktime Pro now? It looks like you are doing a clean install of Snow Leopard, If you are updating to Snow Leopard and have QT pro it moves QT7 Pro to the utilities folder. With the clean install you need to get QT 7 from the Snow Leopard disk. Then you fire up Quicktime and go to the registration screen and put in your QT pro info.
    Hope this helps you.

Can Final Cut Express HD use virtual backgrounds? If so, how is it done?

  • Will Final Cut express work with MacBook Pro??

I am new to Mac and got my first Mac, MacBook pro. 2.4GHZ - 2.o Gig Memory.
Will this be enough or is there an hardware requirement that macbook pro does not come with?
iMovie 08 does not have the effects I was using in the old PC. Slow motion, combining many audio tracks, cross fade etc.
    Thanks

Final Cut Pro is the same program (to all intents and purposes) as Final Cut Express and requires the same power of computer - no more, no less.
For most people, FCP will not do anything that FCE can't - apart from allowing you to use formats such as DVCPRO etc. that amateurs are unlikely to use. All the filters and transitions are exactly the same except for a couple of insignificant ones.
The only reason for buying FCP is in order to get all the other programs that are bundled with it.
    Ian.

  • Final cut studio 2 and macbook pro 17?

I'm anxious to purchase Final Cut Studio 2, and a new MacBook Pro 17" laptop. Is FCS2 and this laptop 100% compatible? Will I be able to install and run FCS2 on this laptop successfully?
    Laptop specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Notebook 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, TI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor, dual -ink DVI support, 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, external 500G hard drive for video storage (firewire 800).
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well those that have tried running FCS 2 on a 17" laptop can't talk. It's not released yet...
However there is no reason why it shouldn't work well. Add an Io HD to the mix, and you'll edit HD on it all day long... we were showing this in the AJA booth at NAB a couple of weeks ago. Apple was running it too on laptops in their booth...
Figure it should be fine. With the advent of Pro Res, there's little you couldn't edit on a MBP... however there are some things you'll not be editing with it, such as 2 k files, or uncompressed HD. Pro res takes care of that though. It's really visually lossless.

If i get the mac pro with the intel processor. can I use the final cut studio that I got with my power PC on it?
    Thanks in advace
    Dave

    hi, Davemilton90:
Apple has a very special deal for us who has Power Mac version of Final Cut Pro (5.0 and older), before December 20 (post marked), we can paid 49.00 plus tax, and get the universal version of the new Final Cut Pro 5.1 (which works on both intel and IBM based Mac), it's called Final Cut Studio Corssgrade program.
You can find details on Final Cut Studio's hoomepge, just download the pdf form, send 49.00 + tax and the old final cut install DVD back to Apple, in return, we got the new version that works natively on both Power Mac and Mac Pro.
    It's a good deal, don't miss it!!

  • Can Final Cut Express 4 and Canon ZR60

I'm new to the whole video experience and would appreciate some advice. I have a Canon ZR60 with a Mini DV tape. Before I purchase the software, I'd like to know if Final Cut Express 4 can process video taken with this camera or do I need to get a video camera that shoots HD?

    Hi
And You need to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin (or FW-800) FireWire Cable to connect.
Neither Your Camera or FCE/Mac can Import/Capture Your movie via USB/USB2 AT ALL.
This Cable is as I know of never supplied from start - has to be bought as extra.
