Final Cut Express HD Chapter Markers

I have not used FCE HD in a while, and cannot remember how to do this. I want to be able to break up the video that I have, only at the chapter markers. I want to have the same effect as the razor blade tool, but automatically cut at the markers. I know that I can do this manually (one-by-one), but I honestly believe that I have done this automatically in the past. What command do I have to run to make this cut the video up at these markers automatically? Thank you very much for your help and assistance! I really appreciate it!

Tom,
I am sorry for the late reply. I found the answer to my question. In Final Cut Express HD, I do a DV Stop/Start Detect, but have to do it when the project is selected in the browser window (upper-left window). This divides my entire video into chapters by detecting the start and stop action in the video. Thank you very much for your assistance!

In previous versions of Final Cut Pro (pre 10) I was able to add chapter markers to the timeline so IDVD would recognize them as chapters.   How do I put chapter markers in Final Cut Pro 10?
    Thanks... Gary

    I don't think you can  .  .  .  at least not in FCP X.
It's all connected with the late Steve Jobs' belief that DVD was already dead and new Mac apps should reflect that.
Have you noticed how iDVD is no longer produced and the last update was about 5 years ago?

  • Final Cut Express, Chapter Markers iDVD

How does this particular tool work with iDVD?
Obviously, I do all my editing in FCE4. Then I convert it an .MOV file & transfer/burn it to DVD with i-DVD.
Must I create separate chapters within iDVD itself in order to have actual chapter menus on my DVD? If so, what purpose do the chapter markers serve in Final Cut Express? The only thing I can assume is that it will give the viewer the ability to “scan” with the channel button on their DVD player, but there will not be an actual menu on the opening screen of the DVD itself...???
    Any answers appreciated, thanks!

    I know to little.
What I know and that is important is
    • Don't set a Chaper marker in the very beginning of Your movie. iDVD demands to
do this start marker by it self.
    • in iMovie HD6 or prior - there is one more thing - not to set a Chapter mark in a
transition or within 2 sec of it.
Don't know how this relate to Final Cut - my guess is - not at all.
BUT THERE ARE ONE - Super Important thing more.
    • Titles of Chapters can only be set from a to z and 0 to 9.
    DON'T even try !"#€%&/()=? etc.
If You do the encoding process in iDVD will halt (often close to the end) with
    the sad message "Multiplexing Error"

  • Missing Chapter Markers from Final Cut Express

I have created DVDs with chapters using iMovie and iDVD. No problems. Now I have upgraded to Final Cut Express HD, and I cannot get iDVD to see its chapter markers.
I have followed the Knowledge Base article to the letter. I was careful to have nothing selected in the time line when applying markers. Following hints in this forum I have tried exporting either Chapter Markers or FCP Markers. I have tried exporting the Quicktime movie self contained or not. I have tried restarting Final Cut Express, which helped when other FCX features locked up after long sessions.
I'm stuck. Can anyone suggest something else to try?

    Hi Al Q,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
    Suggestion,two things to check:
Open the exported QuickTime movie in QT Player, do you see the chapter markers (a pop-up menu below the viewer)? If it is, then the export from FCE is okay, otherwise, something is still not correct in FCE.
Check the iDVD's Preferences, is the "automatically create scene selection menus" enabled?

  • Importing file from final cut express to final cut pro

Hello, I am taking a video I have been working on from final cut express and opening it into final cut pro on another machine. It brings footage over but completely incorrect. I am editing a music video and its basically taking the files and putting them out of sequence etc. When I first open up final cut pro it will say do you want to update this video to the new version which I expected to which I respond yes but its jacked up after that. Any suggestions?

Generally, I just drag the DV file from the finder to the iDVD menu window. Make sure you don't drag it to any Drop Zones, I think that might be your problem with the DV file showing up as the background. If you have default settings in iDVD, this drag and drop should then create submenus based on your chapter markers.
I'm not sure if you have any issues with the Chapters not showing up in QT. If you're expecting them to show up, then make sure that when you do the Export to QT that the option to include Chapter Markers is set. Upon conversion, you should see the Chapters within QT as well as when imported into iDVD.
    Hope this helps!

  • Final Cut Express to Timestamped DVD

I have a Final Cut Express project that is 20 minutes long. There are 140 different clips. Each clip ranges from 5 to 30sec. a piece. I need to export something that all the editors can view on their separate computers w/ chapter markers that have timestamps so they can tell me what/where to edit.
So far we have been doing it from FCE directly, but now that the video for this company is expanding I need to create a better workflow. One that multiple editors can view for instructing editing on videos.
I am a graphic designer working @ a publishing company (we are diving into video blind, not my choice). I've got as far as making over 20 videos for viewing online. Now they have footage from one of they conferences they host and all of them need to view it for editing. Then they can come back and say "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15 etc"... any suggestions?

FCE Timecode Display may display the current timecode at the playhead position, the start and end timecode of the clip, and the reel name. You may enter this name either during capture (reel name plus timecode may uniquely identify a frame in your movie library), or later in the browser while in list view. Unfortunately there is no way to display the clip name.
    By using your own example it is not possible to display "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15" but only something like "00:15:03 - 00:18:04" and "00:04:03 - 00:15:15", etc.
Note however that using the default Type (Absolute Timecode) you might in fact get "02:15:03 - 02:18:04" and "03:04:03 - 03:15:15" if clip 3 starts at absolute 02:00:00 and clip 5 at absolute 03:00:00; in other words you might not need the clip name because the absolute timecode (also named source timecode) uniquely identifies the clip in the movie.
    Some warnings.
    - Burning many clips in iDVD is not an issue, as long as the whole movie is shorter than 2 hours: not a problem in your case (20 minutes, right ?).
    - Instead adding a chapter name to each clip might raise problems: first there is a limit in iDVD I don't recall, but for sure less than 150...; second there is no automatic way to name the chapters: you have to type each name in each chapter marker.
    - iDVD does not have a "time window", but if you burn the clips timecode using the filter above you'll be able to read it also in the iDVD preview window.
    - Finally, after burning the DVD, you can always read the movie timecode while playing back the movie with DVD Player: just use the various controls made available by the player. This however is the new timecode of the movie, not the absolute/source timecode of the original clips.
I hope I answered your questions.

  • Chapters to DVD from Final Cut Express 4

I'm looking for a DVD authoring app that is compatible with Final Cut Express 4.  I want to have the chapter markers I created in FCX 4 to appear in my final DVD.  I tried exporting my FCX 4 project with chapter markers as a Quick Time movie and using iDVD '08 to burn a DVD.  In the dvd play-preview, none of the chapters were present.  I don't see anyway to create chapters with iDVD '08.
Is there something I'm missing in Final Cut Express 4 when creating chapter markers or exporting? Is there a Mac version of a DVD authoring app other than iDVD that would work?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Tom.
I followed the instructions and was able to get chapters from Final Cut Express to work in the iDVD preview.
I'm not sure how to control the quality of the final DVD since choosing File>Export>QuickTime Movie goes straight to export without any frame rate or resolution choices.  Is there a default setting that is adequate for TV viewing?
Thanks again for saving me time.

  • What setting is the best for exporting Final Cut Express HD

I am new to final cut express HD. I have worked with iMovie and it was very easy to work with and exporting the movie was not too difficult.
I am curious as to what setting should I set to to export a movie file from final cut express HD. I've exported a short quicktime movie clip but it doesn't look as sharp. Could someone help me.

For DVD, export as Quicktime Movie NOT Quicktime Conversion.
You can drop the resulting QT file into iDVD or into Compressor if you are using DVD Studio Pro.
If you have chapter markers, make sure to select Chapter Markers in the export submenu.
Bear in mind that iDVD has a limitation of two hours; even if your movie is exactly two hours you will run into probs cause iDVD counts its menus, themes etc as part of that total running time.

  • TS2179 import files from final cut express to idvd

Import files from final cut express to idvd. When we are making a dvd in iDVD importing the files (widescreen mov files ) from final cut express they automatically change to 4x3. They look correct when played in the quicktime player. Has anyone had this problem.

Make sure you don't drag it to any Drop Zones, I think that might be your problem with the DV file showing up as the background. • Final Cut Express 4 & iDVD

When I export using QuickTime movie and import into iDVD I loose the aspect ratio i.e. it is no longer 16:9. I purchased Final cut express because iMovie 08 would not allow CHAPTER MARKS? I produced a 2 hour 25 minute movie in iMovie 08 (a mistake) exported to GarageBand to put chapter marks on and then tried to send it to iDVD and was told File to Large. I have a Double Layer DVD Burner and have created larger movies than this. I thus transfered the movie from iMovie 08 into Final Cut Express 4 to put Chapter Marks on which worked but the aspect ratio was lost. Doing a QuickTime Conversion Aspect Ratio is OK but NO CHAPTER MARKS. (GOOD WAY OF SELLING MORE PROGRAMS BECAUSE NONE SEEM TO DO WHAT YOU EXPECT OR WHAT YOU WANT). iMovie 08 was purchased as an UPGRADE to iMovie HD because of the extra features added, but they forgot to make it work with iDVD?

You may try my instructions in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6025796&#6025796. They worked with me in the past.
I used myDVDEdit on a G5 iMac without any trouble.
About chapter markers. If you want iDVD to recognize them:
    - in FCE make sure the markers are set in the timeline (not in the clips) and are marked "Chapter Marker" (open each marker dialog to set this option)
    - from FCE Export/Quicktime Movie (NOT Using Quicktime conversion: this doesn't export markers) and make sure you select "Chapter Markers" (NOT "All markers" or any other choice for this option) in the export dialog
    - then you should be able to import to iDVD the movie with chapter markers (iDVD Preferences must be set to create submenus for chapters)

  • Can you export FInal Cut express project to IDVD?

I am currently using IMOVIE and IDVD. I am considering purchasing Final Cut Express. Someone told me that you cannot export a completed Final Cut Express File to IDVD. Is this correct. Would I have to invest in DVD Studio?
    Thanks,
    Benjamin

Completely untrue. Some people seem to have issues
with chapter markers not importing correctly on
occasions, but otherwise it works fine
Can anyone comment on this problem and the solution? I just upgraded to FCX HD and iDVD 5.0, and I can no longer put chapters in my movies. Worked just fine under FCX 2.0 and iDVD 4.
    Thanks,

  • Final Cut Express Movie turns into Widescreen

I've seen a lot of discussion about this on the forum, but no real solutions.
ANd to re-cap...Its not Audio, its not chapter markers, its not having something selected in the timeline when exporting.
When I create a non widescreen project in Final Cut Express (Current Version)
And then export it as a reference movie (as it is suggested to do)
Then import it into iDVD for burning. It becomes a widescreen project.
I have 2 projects I created in FCE. Both are from the same type of source material, both are about the same length, acording to the Quicktime movie inspector, identical in every way almost except for the actual content.
One burned fine in iDVD, the next one, done the same day was converted to widescreen by iDVD.
Any solutions to this...I'm obviously not the first person with the problem.

Same problem with a fullscreen movie exported as a quicktime movie from FCP, then iDVD forcing it into widescreen. I solved the problem by exporting from FCP with Compressor. In Compressor I chose DV_NTSC as my format and it works fine as fullscreen in iDVD. It even saves chapter markers. So that's my current workaround until Apple fixes this terrible bug.

  • Final Cut Express Crashes during rendering.

I am trying to render a series of mp4 video files. I have 86.5 GB free space, and when I try to render, after a few seconds, the Final Cut Express 3.5.2 Crashes. I have checked the update site, and I have installed the latest updates. This also occures in LiveType when I have many layers of annimation occuring at the same time. I have done the hardware diagnostics, and all my hardware checks out fine. Does anyone know of a problem with MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and that 86.5 GB free space having this problem?

Just bought your book online. Should I always convert them with QT Pro and then import them as mov files into FCE (I would like to leave my LiveType files as ipr to allowing me to edit them should any timing or content issues arise)? Also, with FCE, is there a time limit on how long the entire production can be? My production was 2 hours and 35 minutes (27 chapter markers). I've since deleted it all, and I will convert all the files using QT Pro and then import them into my production.

  • Video out of sync in Final Cut Express... but in sync everywhere else!

'm working on making one video that is composed of two camera angles of the same thing. So, I have two video tracks in Final Cut Express, one for the side view, and one for the main view. Both videos are Quicktime Movies (.mov extension).
    Here are the file details:
    Main Cam: duration - 1hr 26min 46sec // file size - 5.74gb
    Side Cam: duration - 1hr 29min 18sec // file size - 5.63gb
[the side cam video is a little longer because I started filming with that camera a little bit before the main cam and stopped the filming a little earlier]
Now, here's the problem. Both videos are in my Final Cut Express project. The Main Cam video runs fine. But the Side Cam video's video is out of sync with the audio by a lot (somewhere between 2 and 6 full seconds). Normally I would think that something had happened during the filming, but here's the odd thing: the Side Cam video plays perfectly in sync out of Final Cut Express.
If I open it in Quicktime, or even in iMovie, the audio and video are perfectly in sync for the entirely of the video. But when I import it into FCE and watch it there, whether it's in the timeline, in the viewer, rendered, or unrendered (I've tried them all), it's horribly out of sync.
So, the video plays fine and in sync everwhere except for in the Final Cut Express program. The Main Cam video, which has a very similar duration and file size and which is the same file type, plays perfectly even in FCE. The only problem is the Side Cam, and I can't figure out why this is, or how to fix it.
Another thing: these videos were not captured from a camera into Final Cut. I already have the video files on the computer, and as I've said, the audio is fine there. To get them into FCE, I use file -> import.
Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to fix this, could you provide directions of some sort? I'm fairly new to Final Cut.
Any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Does both camcorders was set to 16-48 khz audio?
One way to synch audio that drifting from video (or from anoter audio lenght) is to set precisely 2 markers (one near the beginning, another near the end) in the correct lenght video track. Try to find spots where you can hear and see a common reference. The result of the workaround will put a corrected audios between those points only.
Now note the duration between those 2 markers in video track.
*Unlink the video/audio clip with the wrong duration.*
Select the drifting audio and put the 2 markers at the intended reference points.
The duration should be less or more than the video.
Use the blade tool to cut the wrong lenght audio at markers.
The tips is to set a new duration for this portion with the set speed command.
With this +new duration+, align the in point of audio with the first video marker. The out point of audio should be aligned with the second video marker.
Now the audio should match the video lenght and should be in synch.

  • Final Cut Express 2 - Problem rendering video in sequence

I've created a 23 minute video but the last portion of the video will not render in the sequence. The audio continues to render. I would like to make some small adjustments and polish up the sequence to make a final copy but I can't see it in the canvas. I tried copying and pasting this sequence to a new sequence and to a new project. Making a new project worked once - for awhile the video was rendering and then it stopped again. Any suggestions? The render command just flashes a quick window - but doesn't do more than that.

I have Final Cut Express 2 and I'm working on a G5 with OSX. I have two hard drives and on the one with the video, I still have quite a bit of free space.
Do you think I should try to export it in 2 pieces by using the in and out markers when I export? Will that mess up iDVD when I go to press it?
