Final Cut Express HD freezes sometimes

Sometimes FCE will freeze during timeline playback on a certain clip. I insert the clip into the timeline and playback and it freezes and when I click something I get the beach ball. I force quit and go back and it does the same.
I delete the clip and then re-insert the clip it and play it it does it again, but if I use a different clip its fine. I have tried to change the in piont of the clip a bit and it still the same.
In one instance I changed the speed of the clip and it worked fine. This clip is like all my others, DV that I shot on a sony pc 101, imported just fine.
I have about 130 gigs of video and about 10 minutes of edited project so far and this has happened with 2 clips. But is is really bugging me. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Tom- At work now so I'll try and get you the detailed specs later tonight.
My set up is very much "plug-and-play", install defaults. The drives I use are assembled by Pacific Pro Audio using WB and some "Oxford 911" chip set. I know nothing other then they are my audio dealers for the studio and I never have any issues with the drives in the recording studio with my dual 1.8, 2.5 gig ram, OS 10.3.9. I gone through easily a dozen of them on various projects.
They format and split the drives into three volumes before they send them to me as I'm told that is a more efficient way to use for Pro Tools. Again, not a techie here but after 15 years with these guys, they've never be wrong yet so I take the word for it.
As for this particular computer, the only add-on apps I run is Aperture, Dreamweaver, Logic Pro, Sountracks Pro and Final Cut Express. The Prosonus is my only add-on piece of hardware besides the drive. All audio and video is set to go to the external drive, all settings are defaults and I haven't had to load any other drivers.
This comp has had very little work since I picked it up a 6 months ago. Mostly email, a few hours of video and some miscellaneous songwriting in Logic. It's darn near "fresh out of the box". I'd be hard pressed to find anything strange in my set up.

  • Crash/Freeze while using Final Cut Express 4.0.1

(Been this way since Sept. 2012)
Recently, my computer has been frequently freezing while playing back video on Final Cut Express 4.0.1.  This has been going on for probably 2 weeks now (and today, it happened twice in 30 minutes).  I am playing video (fully rendered), then the screen greys out, and any sound loops about .2 seconds of whatever was last playing.
Sometimes the computer shuts itself off and restarts (like a kernel panic), other times I have to force the computer off.  Sometimes the screen has small vertical stripes when crashing/freezing.
This MAY have also happened while playing back 1080i video in QuickTime as well, but I'm not sure.  I've been using 1080i videos for over 2 years, so I'm not sure what the issue is.  This is why I think it's a Mac Pro problem and not a FCE problem.
I put in a new graphics card a year ago, but I haven't had any issues with it in that time.
I've included the crash report.  I see "panic" in there, and this time the computer restarted itself.  If anyone can help what might the issue be, I'd be very grateful.

  • Final Cut Express (4.0.1) keeps on freezing (not responding) when i import files (pics). Have force quit 3 times already. Also rebooted Mac. Any help please?

Frustrating experience with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 today. Started a new project. Imports pics, but every now and then FCE freezes and I have to force quite. Any advice please. Thanks

CMYK is a colour system used by specialized publishing businesses so unless you have got your pictures directly from one of these sources they are unlikely to be CMYK.
If the pictures have been produced by you they are likely to be the normal RGB.
To check, ctrl click on an original picture and in the Get Info window check the colour specs.
As you can see this one is RGB.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 - 5 minute captures then freeze

Something I have found with Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0.
After Updating to Tiger - 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.4.1 - Both Pro 4.5 and Express 3.0 will not capture more then 5 minutes and 12 seconds. If you are having this issue the solution I used to fix both Pro and Express issues was an update on the software. Final Cut Pro 5 fixed the problem (or 6 if you can) and with Final Cut Express, version 3.5 fixed the issue but if you can go with FCX 4.
Let me know if this helped or if you have found a different solution. Downgrading the os might help but that is too much of a pain and it's time to upgrade the software anyway.

    #29: Need AGP Graphics card
Shane's Stock Answer #29 – Error: “Need AGP Graphics card”
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302667
The Final Cut software is looking for a graphics card type that is required for that version of the software. FCP 4 and FCP 4.5 were released when AGP cards were the requirement. Attempting to open this on a Mac with a PCIe graphics card, such as an Intel Mac, will cause this error. FCP 4.5 is not supported on the Intel Macs. If you happen to have a PowerPC Quad processor Mac and get this error, you can try this hack:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
You can also press the "esc" key as you launch FCP. This enables FCP to open and run, but know that it might not work optimally.
If that doesn’t work, or if you have an Intel Mac, you are going to have to upgrade to a supported version of FCP…and FCP 6, part of Final Cut Studio 2, is the latest version.

  • Final Cut Express on last  legs, it seems.

I am having major problems with my Final Cut Express these days. I can't ever capture more than 10 minutes worth of camcorder footage without the whole FCE suddenly freezing up on me. I then have no choice but to Force Quit & end up losing the 10 or 15 minutes worth of footage captured. Quite often I can't even get that far...when I click on "capture now" it goes into "allocating disc space" and just freezes up again. Force Quit all over again.
I am using a Crossfire external hard drive so there is plenty of space. Even the Macintosh HD has lots of space...so I'm not sure it's related to that. I have made tons of movies in the past, without such trouble....but as time has gone by it has become more & more unruly. More prone to crashing & siezing up. Is there any way I can uninstall the whole thing, and start from new with restored factory settings? Or is there a way to clean up the mess (if there is one) which is apparently clogging up the works? I am using an Apple iMac which I have owned since 2003, with Mac OSX version 10.4.11.
    1.25 Ghz PowerPC G4
    with 1GB DDR SDRAM.
The Final Cut Express version I am using is version 2.0.2 (from 2004).
Please help ! I used to be able to crank out tons of movies with minimal effort, now it's a nightmare!

Check out Armando's suggestion first but if the problems persist take a good look at this FCE troubleshooting article.
I would particularly recommend trashing the preferences first and if that is ineffective uninstall FCE as described and reinstall it.

  • Which camera to get for Final Cut Express 3.5HD/ upgrade to FCE 4?

    Hello everyone!
I know this has been discussed frequently, but i am sort of looking for a costum made solution for me
    Following situation: Macbook, 2.16Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm.
I am running 10.5.3, have Final Cut Express 3.5 installed and am used to work in it,
mainly for editing video files not coming from a camcorder.
I have some experience in SD miniDV recording/editing though.
NOW I was thinking of getting a new camcorder in the 1500$ max range.
I want to edit video files, sometimes burn DVDs, at other times only to have them on the mac.
What i like about some of these new HD consumer models they can record AVCHD and mpeg2 SD in DVD quality. That should allow me to record in mpeg2 and have less hassle with importing/converting into Final Cut Express 3.5 if lower quality is fine (which it is as of now)
At the same time I could upgrade to Final Cut Express 4 and import the AVCHD files, but I still taken aback from how time and resource consuming it is. Plus it does not allow full HD 1920x1080 in FCE 4 does it?
So I was looking at the Sony HDR SR11 as a nice camcorder. Seen it live, seems decent.
On the other hand, is a camera which records in HDV a better solution for me?
I could keep Final Cut 3.5, no need to upgrade right?
Is it less hassle to transfer files to the mac and edit them?
I am very unsure which way to go right now...

    Hi Flore
This a huge debate. There are very few advantages to the new AVCHD camera's and the vgery long list of negative aspects of AVCHD camera's outweighs any usefulness of them. They are designed for Grandad to pick up and shoot good quality pictures and not for editing.
I have posted below the wiki address for AVCHD, please read the page. It is very important you do read it. It explains in depth about AVCHD.
I feel the is no real place for the hard drive based AVCHD camera. There is a place for a mini-dv tape based camera.
Life will be very hard if you go the Hard-drive camera route. Stay with tape.
Tape is cheap, hardy and easy to move around. Hard drives not so!!!
Take some time to read the following wikipedia page...PLEASE READ THIS PAGE!!!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD
You will see that AVCHD is not all the bee's knee's.
I personally hope it dies an extremly painful agonising drawnout death.
AVCHD has no place in the professional domain.

  • Canon GL2 is not recognized by Final Cut Express

I am trying to capture from my Canon GL2. I hook up the fire wire but neither I-Movie or Final Cut Express seem to recognize the connection.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi
    My general list on this.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.

  • HDV KGCore crash with Final Cut express 4 NEED HELP

I recently purchased a cannon hv30 hdv camera. This is my first time using High Def footage and I am now working on my first project with it. I have used Final cut express with a hard drive camera for over a year now and have made many projects with little problems. After importing my footage in the 1080i60 easy setup setting (around 63 minutes of footage) I began to add it to the sequence. after adding the first part I added the next imported section of hdv footage. The program then froze for a few seconds and crashed. It did this everytime I added the same clip into the sequence. sometimes the error said that kcgore plugin could be related. I called an apple rep and after getting rid of all 3rd party programs and reinstalling TWICE it still crashes after I recaptured the footage while I am either editing the footage or jsut playing it back. NEED HELP

Thanks I tried it again and it seems to be working but I crashed like once or twice when viewing the footage. But after starting it up again it is working fine it is jsut that the footage has these white flashes in it when playing back sometimes. I am not sure if it is going to crash again or not hopefully it is fixed. I was just using the hdv setting for 1080i60. Im not sure if it was pal or nstc I just used the basic hdv 1080i60 setting. also do you think I should upgrade my ram and memory? Would that help moving it up from a 1 gig to 2 or 4 when working wwith hd footage now?
    thanks again

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD. Also, I can not afford an expensive camera and need some advice on which of the available cameras would be best and also work well with a Mac. One last issue, I currently use a Panasonic #CCD camera that takes a tape. When I load video to Final Cut the audio and video are out of sinc. Go figure. Can anyone help with these questions. Karen

    Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders.  Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs.  Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

  • Final Cut Express 4 keeps crashing while exporting large project

I have an Imac and I'm using final cut express 4. I keep having a problem when exporting project to quicktime conversion for youtube. The software just keeps crashing and giving me an error. I normally only have this proble with projects that have alot of editing or just long files. Sometimes it crashes and then ends up going thru without crashing but I can't seem to get it to work this time. The project I'm trying to export is about 20 minutes. Please help me.
    Imac hardware info:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac7,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          1 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz

It's not clear to me what you're describing about the upload process. It could be a problem of YT's uploader.
    trakaddict wrote:
My final mov. file is 6 GB does that have anything to do with it?
Possibly. If you follow YT's guidelines for a 1080 res video @ 8 Mbps, your file should be more like 1.2 GB.
Your AIC sequence shoud be exported from FCE with current settings. That means it's still an AIC file when you bring that into MPEG Streamclip. Choose Export to Quick Time and in the dialogue window choose h.264 as your compresssion. Check the Limit Data Rate and enter 8000. If your video is interlaced, check the de-interlaced box.
    Good luck.

  • Final Cut Express anomaly

Why does Final Cut Express stop capturing video at approximately 5:04 to 5:16 minutes saying: "end of tape".
I start at the place where it stopped capturing, start capturing again and another 5+ minutes goes by and "bloop!" the "end of tape" message appears again. Capturing has stopped.
    What's up with that????

I bought, installed and used the FCE in 2005. I used it for 5 years before it started acting up. All of a sudden the "end of tape" message would appear and the capture stopped.

  • HT2948 I have a Sony DCR-PC100 is it supported by final cut express?? wilth

I have a Soney DCR-PC100 is it supported by final cut express ?? what 'p' will they convert to??

    Hi
Just my notes - for iMovie - but they go to 99% for FinalCut too.
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
    from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About . . / More . .
under Firewire.. what do you read . . ?
    More
    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choice / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    No Camera or bad import
    • USB hard disk
    • Network storage
    • File Vault is on

if you have adobe cs3 or 4 and have the adobe bridge on close that

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Final Cut Express - Aspect Ratio

Where do I set the aspect ratio in Final Cut Express? I find that often I import 4:3 clips, and FCE wants me to work with them in a 16:9 Sequence, so I get letter boxing. Sometimes, FCE seems smart enough and says "hey should I fix this", but sometimes it doesn't, and I can't figure out how to tell it what aspect ratio my project is in.

Yeah, it took me a while to realize what to do about this. If you have your bowser window in column view, you scroll it to the right and find the check box column for anamorphic.
