Final Cut Express HD quits suddenly

Hi everybody and anybody. Here is my dilemma. I have had FCE HD for quite a while now and I've produced 5 great videos with it. Yesterday after capturing some footage on my WD Mybook external drive and viewing the footage on my MacBook Pro, FCE quit on me. After re-launching the app, I noticed that my clips in the bin were disconnected. After several failed attempts to re-connect, I gave up for the night. Today, when I attempted to launch FCE HD, all I got was the startup screen and then it just quits! No matter how many times I tried, it failed to launch. I browsed the Apple Discussions and thought I'd found the solution. But after "trashing and repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling, disconnecting and reconnected, I've accomplished nothing. I even did the whole QT thing to no avail. Can someone point me in another direction that will get my dilemma resolved. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Quicktime might have done it. Try uninstalling and reinstalling an earlier version. Make sure you trash the QT receipts:

Error: Final Cut Express HD quit unexpectedly.. help????

Ok, It was working great. Then all of a sudden I tried to open FCE HD from my dock icons and it says "The application Final Cut Express quit enexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." However, this doesn't seem to be true, because now quicktime doesn't work at all, and iMovie will not import anything: audio, video, nothing. I've tried everthing I can think of, I read other discussions here, nothing helped. I even un-intalled and re-installed twice... Can anyone give me a suggestion to fix FCE HD? Thanks. Fat Preacher.

Disconnect all devices from the computer except the keyboard and mouse. Reboot. Trash your preferences and repair permissions and then launch the applications from the Applications folder at the top level of your hard drive. If it still does not launch the OS has been corrupted. I would advise contacting a service center or erasing the disk and reinstalling the operating system and all applications.

Why does Final Cut Express 4 quit automatically when I open Log and Transfer window?

I'm using a Sony NXCAM and I am editing on a Mac OS X. The clips I have recorded are in MTS format so I understand I must use the Log and Transfer setting to import my clips. I plug the camera into my computer, go into Final Cut Express 4, turn the camera on, and then go into the Log and Transfer window. Once I open that, Final Cut quits and an error message pops up that reads, "Final Cut Express quit unexpectedly." Final Cut quits too fast for me to even click on anything in the Log and Transfer window. I really don't understand why it does this. The only thing I can think of why Final Cut is quitting is because I have over 100 clips on the camera, so maybe that is too much for Final Cut Express 4 to handle. However, I wouldn't think that would be the case. If anyone knows of anything I could do to fix this problem, then please send me a reply. I've looked around the internet to see if anyone else has had this problem, but I haven't found anything. Thank you, any responses will be greatly appreciated!

Shooted videos directly saved to the SD memory card is no problem, the log and transfer window immediately recognizes the sd card and I was able to convert the videos. I will check later today if this were 25p, 50i or 50p footages.
Strangely enough is that transferring the .mts files from the internal memory to the sd card (using the Mac finder, I don't know if it is possible within the camera itself) won’t help, the log and transfer window doesn't the recognizes the transferred files, strange!
I hope that this problem will not occur using Final Cut Pro X, which I will start using soon.
I'm curious what the exact problem will be.

Final Cut Express keeps quitting

I can open Final Cut and movie clips. However, once I play one or mess with any clip I've opened, it will shut down. Sometimes it happens immediately and other times it will happen the second time I play a clip. I've already ensured that my color setting was 'millions' and the problem persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've had this program for three months and I can't use it because it shuts down when I try.

Sounds either like the application isn't installed correctly, there's a problem with the media or the drive, or there's a trouble with RAM.

Final Cut Express 4 "Quits Unexpectedly"

Ive read some threads out there regarding my problem and I have yet to solve my problem. I first tried reinstalling FCE4 but that didn't solve anything. Then I read a thread in which Tom had given directions to delete my preferences. I did that, and it still "quits unexpectedly." This happens at random moments while I am working on a project. If there are any other solutions out there please let me know. Thanks

Has this just started and were you able to use FCE 4 successfully in the past, or are you new to FCE and it has always been that way?
If it has recently started quitting have you installed or updated ANYTHING recently?
Is your video material normal DV or some non-standard format ?
The problem could be in your computer etc. or it could be the way you are using it.
As you have given no details about how everything is set up and exactly how you are working it is almost impossible to suggest anything.
A couple of years ago someone couldn't capture video, but it was only after several days of correspondence that we discovered he was trying to capture it from his STILL camera !

Final Cut Express 4 quits on startup

Hi, I just bought FCE4 and out of the box it quit on startup. I have not been able to get it to start yet. As fast as I can click the icon to open it I get the "unexpectedly quit" dialog box with the usual reopen/report problem options. Once it happened I checked for an update and updated to 4.0.1 and it happened again. I can open LiveType. I tried deleting everything using the apple support guide I found in another forum and reinstalled/re-updated but still nothing. Software update says everything is up to date. Any ideas?

I had a problem a number of months ago with the video jumping all over the place. I tried to uninstall, reinstall, mess with the settings. Nothing worked. I placed a call to apple support and they told me that the user account that I was using became corrupt.
Create a new user. Install FCE in that new user account and see what happens. It might work but if it doesn't then you can call Apple support.

Final Cut Express unexpectedly quits after system update

I've just installed all of my system updates, and now when I try to launch FCE I get an error that says the program has closed unexpectedly. What is going on here?

Sorry to interject, but may I ask why is it better to uninstall an older version before upgrading? Will that cause any problems opening old projects?
And yes, to the original question, I've learned the hard way that FCE is very picky. You have to match the proper OS cat and QT or else it won't work very well. I'm not sure about versions 1 or 3, but thanks to these fine people on the discussion boards I learned that FCE 2 needs no more that 10.4.10 and QT 7.2 I'm upgrading my computer as well and it seems FCE 3.5.1 and 4 will both work on Leopard and the current version of QT. I chose 3.5.1 since it is cheaper on ebay and has better Soundtrack and Livetype features. 3.5.1 is not as future-proof since it might not work with the upcoming Snow Leopard or future QT, but my PowerPC computer won't run Snow Leopard anyway so it doesn't matter to me.

Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Quits unexpectedly while opening

Hi all. I have Final Cut Express HD 3.5. I bought it several years ago and used it on my Mac Book Pro (2006 model). I bought an iMac a few years later (December 2009). I can't remember what OS the iMac came with, but it's currently running 10.6.8.
I recently was asked to collaborate on a video project, so I installed FCE to use on the project. The installation went just fine, and the software didn't seem to disagree with my system, nor the system with the software.
I then went to open* FCE, and got the following error message:
"Final Cut Express HD quit unexpectedly while using the Impromptu Analysis plug-in."
*Note: this is the first time opening the software on this computer after the first time installing it on this computer.

It tells me that while loading Audio Filters, It comes across a "MOSO: Impromptu Analysis" and somehow doesn't like it.
Live type and Sound track both seem to work fine.
THINGS I HAVE TRIED:
1. the first thing I did was a search of my computer for "Impromptu Analysis," and found a .component (I think) plugin. it wasn't in the traditional audio plugins folder, but within a folder containing the application (Impromptu) in my documents folder My first instinct was "get that thing out of here!!" so I deleted it. problem not solved.
2. Did a complete software update of everything, verify and repaired permissions, and still nothing.
3. uninstalled and reinstalled, and nothing.
4. Ran software update again.
5. reboots between each step.
6. Bid on Final Cut studio 5 on ebay. I've since been outbid (but still watching like a hawk).
What I don't understand is even after deleting the plugin, rebooting and an uninstall and reinstall of FCE, and it's still messing with the plugin.
THINGS I HAVEN'T TRIED
1. upgrading to 4.0 (don't have a disc, and it's not available for a free update, since it's discontinued, is it?)
2. reinstalling the plugin that's causing the issue
3. deleting or resetting the preferences of the AU plugins list. (not sure how to).
my best guess on the problem plug-in is that it is part of an install of the live coding software called Impromptu (http://impromptu.moso.com.au/). But it's blowing my mind as to why it's still messing things up even after I deleted it. I don't think I ever did a proper install of Impromptu, nor did I do a proper uninstall...
If anyone can point me in the right direction, that'd be super swell.

Well never mind everyone. Apparently, Searching your computer for plugins through spotlight doesn't search the plugins folder in either the "Macintosh HD" location or the ~/Library locations.. Go figure.
I went to re-install the trouble plugin, and to my surprise, I still had 2 copies of the plugin installed on my system. I trashed them, as well as the other 15 or so of their brother and sister Impromptu Plugins, and got the software to open! now all I have to do is figure out what codec/setup to use.

Final Cut Express Quit Unexpectedly

On a brand new install directly from the DVD - Final Cut Express 4 quits on opening. Tried to clean preferences, install again, update software...

Final cut express quits on start up

i have a macbook (2006 model v1.1, 2gb ram, tiger 10.4.11) running final cut express 4.01 - it was fine 2 weeks ago, now all of a sudden its quitting everytime i open it, ive trashed the preferences still no good.
anyone got any ideas please ?

... it was an au plug in (im not sure which yet !!) i installed about 6 of them earlier in the week, and although they must have passed the au test fce didnt like them. ive pulled them all out of the component folder and i'll try them one at a time.

Final Cut Express (4.0.1) keeps on freezing (not responding) when i import files (pics). Have force quit 3 times already. Also rebooted Mac. Any help please?

Frustrating experience with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 today. Started a new project. Imports pics, but every now and then FCE freezes and I have to force quite. Any advice please. Thanks

CMYK is a colour system used by specialized publishing businesses so unless you have got your pictures directly from one of these sources they are unlikely to be CMYK.
If the pictures have been produced by you they are likely to be the normal RGB.
To check, ctrl click on an original picture and in the Get Info window check the colour specs.
As you can see this one is RGB.

Final Cut Express 4 Keeps Quitting Unexpectedly?

So, on my old computer, I had Final Cut Express 4. However, that computer crashed and is no longer in use, resulting in all applications and documents from my old computer being transferred into a hard drive. I plugged in my hard drive to my new computer, and when I try to open Final Cut Express, almost immediately a small window pops up saying "The application Final Cut Express quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." I had MANY times try to click relaunch, then reset and relaunch, but the same window appears each time. What should I do? Will my Final Cut EVER be able to work on this computer or any other? Or will I have to purchase a new one? Thanks SO much!

Final Cut Express Quits when exporting using Quick Time conversion to MPEG2

I'm new Mac user and I'm trying to compress a movie from Final Cut Express HD when exporting using Quick Time conversion to MPEG2 format when I do that Final Cut application quits.
and if helps you to answer I have the same problem trying to do the same from iMovie HD and from Adobe Premier 6.5

I'm not sure how you can get to that point: I cannot even find MPEG2 in my list of compression types while exporting with QuickTime Conversion... (I have 31 of them, and QT 7 Pro installed).
In any case, if you want to make a DVD and have iDVD installed, you have simply to Export/QuickTime Movie (without conversion): iDVD will take care of compressing your movie for you before burning the DVD.

HELP! Capture quits even after buying new Final Cut Express HD 3.5

Had a problem with the quiting of the application upon trying to capture. Thought it was some sort of incompatability with the OS 10.4.9 and my old Final Cut Express program. Accordingly, I upgraded to FCEHD 3.5, thinking everything would be cool.
Same problem! X?X?X?X??!!
Anyone with any ideas? I try to capture, and the program immediately quits without any type of error message.

These were two very helpful suggestions. I tried both of them. I could not find any Quick Time receipts, and I trashed the permissions and other files, and repaired the permissions, as indicated on the website.
HOWEVER, stilll having the same problem. Computers are complex ecosystems, I suppose.
I am leaving to go visit a couple of nature recording friends, for a week, and will be away from my computer.
I hope others will read about this problem, and if the spirit moves them, help me solve the mystery. I am sure that all of us have experienced that feeling of frustration when you try to buy the best, and use the best protocols, and the darn thing just won't work.

Final Cut Express 4.01 quits on startup

Hi, I just installed Final Cut Express 4, updated to 4.01 and I can't get past the startup screen. It quits immediately after. It also did this before I updated it.
I have tried trashing my preferences. I've done a thorough re-install and still... can't get past that screen. I did a full software update including firmware and then reinstalled, still, no luck.
I have plenty of RAM and free disk space, don't have any 3rd-party hardware connected, and I have the latest version of Quicktime.
The only possibility is the graphics card, but I'm pretty sure that meets the specs as well as it does say that Quartz Extreme is supported in my system profiler.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

I know you said you trashed the preferences and reinstalled FCE but did you do it properly ...... most people don't.
They just delete the .plist and drag the FCE application to the trash.
This is a complete waste of time.
Take a look at this short troubleshooting guide:-

I would suggest deleting the preference files first EXACTLY as described here.
If that doesn't work, COMPLETELY UNINSTALL FCE as described here and reinstall it.
