Final cut express HD(ver. 3.5)

I have a focus enhancements DR-HD 100 and I am recording from a JVC HD-110U. On the older 3.5 version of FCE I could not drag and drop the QT files. I finally, like 2 weeks later, got an engineer at Focus enhancements to tell me for some unknown reason, the HDQT file format you can record in on the DR-HD 100 is not compatible with FCEHD.....so my question is does any body know if it is compatible on FCE 4?

No it's not. These are native HDV files, not the format used in FCE. They will only work in FCP.

  • Just bought MacBook and found my Final Cut Express HD (ver.3.0) won't work

I have just bought a MacBook (2.16GHz speed, SDRAM of 2GB) and found my Final Cut Express HD (ver.3.0) won't work. I tried running it after transferring it over from my old iMac G5 and keep getting the message "AGP Graphics card missing". I have checked my About this Mac file which tells me I have a GMA950 graphics chipset, that Quartz Extreme is supported but that it has no PCI card installed either. Does this mean I cannot use Final Cut Express on a MacBook?

If pressing "esc" does not work, try this:-
    1. Right-click (Ctrl click) the FCE application icon - the one in the Applications folder NOT the alias in the Dock.
    2. In the window that opens select Show Package Contents and then open the Contents Folder.
    3. Inside you will find an Info.plist which you double-click and it should open in TextEdit etc.
    4. About 17 lines down you will see AGP. Simply change it to PCI
    5. Click the red window closure button and you will be asked if you want to save the changes. Simply click Save.
The whole process only takes a few seconds and should permanently cure the problem.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

  • I movie V's Final cut express

My question is, if you have mastered Imovie fairly well and would like some more features, would final cut express be the step in next evolution?
Can anyone send me to a review explaining the pro's and con's of final cut express.
    Thank you
    Scotty

look at the UserInterface metaphor, which is in use with iMovie:
    "sorting slides"
iM imports a tape, splits it up automatically into "slides"/clips, you arrange them, edit'em, add some/few "presets" of titles, effects, add music - done.
FCE has a totally different concept..-
it offers the workflow of professional movie making; very little tasks are automated, has a very different file management (you sort your material in bins, sequences, you can nest sequences, etc...)
FCE forces you to think first, no editing by doing as in iM...- and you need at last brainmatter vers. 2.2
e.g. you have to KNOW, what is the concept of a title-effect as "farfaraway" (= perspective distortion, perspective blurr/disolve) - you do it then "manually" with the zillions of knobs and sliders, FCE offers...- you are a 100% in control... but, no idea, no result... no "magic" ...
even basic functions as editing are very different to iM; after years of iM usage, I dared to start a 60min wedding video as my first FCE project... after weeks, I trashed the whole thing unfinished into the trash bin...- got lost, with my iM knowledge... :-/
get a good book, read the 1400pgs manual, get another good book, start with the basics, start with a 5min project.... => FCE is a wonderful tool for moviemaking, e.g. 99 audio layers offer superb control for adding sound effects, elaborated audio mixing etc...-
I use them both - iM for doing quick ('n dirty) editing; FCE for special effects, layer effects (e.g. pic-in-pic), audio ... you can exchange your QT.movs without lost of quality... so, I go back'n forth between both apps ...-

  • Final Cut Express opening of project

I am brand spanking new to Final Cut Express and already am getting into trouble trying to get a past project to reopen. i am going to file>open> and clicking on it in the folder i created but it wont load up on my timeline it just appears infront of the viewer window waiting for me to hit the play button to view it. What am i doing wrong?i want to be able to view it on the timeline as well.thx

*This may be an old thread, but oh well. I am have the same problem. Ever since I installed the new OS (leopard) I haven't been able to open my old Final cut express HD project files. I'll click on one and it will load then say either general error or access denied. I have no idea how to fix it.*
*I have final cut express HD version 3 and my old files are final cut ver. 3.0 files. I haven't had a problem with the new project files I have made.*

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?

  • My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link
    http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/fcpx-bug-best-practices-for-using-external-hard- drives-and-final-cut-pro-x/
You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

  • Final cut Express unable to capture

My Final Cut Express wont initialize my deck. A dialog box comes up saying so. one site suggest deleting quicktime receipts in my library folder on my mac, that quicktime needs to be reinstalled, then i should be able to get my canon HV20 video camera to communicate with FCE 4 and start capturing. has anyone heard of resolving my "unable to initialize video deck" issue this way? Any ideas how to get my HV20 and FCP to communicate to eachother?

There is a separate forum for FCE.
Make sure you are using the correct HDV settings in FCE and that the camera is set to output HDV and not downconvert.

  • Final Cut Express won't capture audio with the video anymore, why?

I have used Final Cut Express 4 for over a year now with no problems, but recently I am unable to capture any audio with the video from my camera. I can do it through iMovie no problem. I can't figure out if I changed a setting by accident because everything looks normal to me. Could another program be interfering with this? Quicktime Pro? I have no idea how to fix this.

First of all, we need a bunch of information in order to help. Please provide the specs of the footage and the sequence you are using. Also, are you using DV, HDV, or AVCHD? Do you hear audio when the clip is played in the viewer, or is there no audio at all once the clip is captured/ingested?

  • Panasonic HDC-SD100 media card unable to capture on Final Cut Express 4

No problems at all with transfer to i-movie but just purchased final cut express 4 and problems with capturing from the media card. Signal system on camera is 1080/50i. Have tried setting HD and 1080/50i in the easy set up but no joy. Have tried log and transfer and see clips but on transfer message states no data. Can anyone help with the settings please?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum!
There are many things that could cause this, and almost all have been discussed.
    Some things to try:
    • In the Log and Transfer window, click the preferences button (the gear in the upper right). Make sure audio is set to *Plain Stereo*
    • Also in that preferences window, click the button to *Clear the Cache*
Also, what drive are you using to capture to (internal or external)? How is it formatted, and how much space is left on that drive?

  • IMovie 08, iMovie 6, or Final Cut Express

I just got a new Sony HDR-SR12 HD camera. It records in 1080i. I tried iMovie 08, but I don't like the export options. I used the iMovie 08 import .mov file and opened it in iMovie 6. I exported the video and it doesn't look that good. I'm thinking about Final Cut Express but I don't know how it integrates with iLife apps. What's the best option?

iMovie 08 imports AVCHD in full 1080i. The AVCHD is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080.
The issue comes when you render the project. The iMovie 08 presets max out at 960x540 for Apple TV. Apple TV looks very good because most TVs will upscale it back to 1920x1080.
It is possible to export to Quicktime in full 1920x1080.
However, then you have the problem of how to play it back.
You can play it back at 1920x1080 on your Mac, if your screen is large enough.
You can play it back on a Sony Playstation 3.
You can play it on a BluRay Disk Player.
Toast 9 permits burning a BluRay Disk in full 1920x1080. You will need a BluRay disk Burner for this. Toast 9 also lets you do a short AVCHD/Bluray disk on a regular DVD on a regular DVD burner, but you are limited to about 20 minutes of playing time.
If you burn to a normal DVD in MPEG2, you are limited to 480i, so that is the worst option.

  • Is it possible to transfer stored (b-roll) video footage from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro event library? Is so, what do I need?

I have been editing in final cut express and now that I'm working in Pro X I would like to transfer my b-roll footage from FCX to Pro X. I read that there is an app. that you can buy that does this for Final Cut Pro 7, is this possible with Final Cut Express?

Any media used in FCE can be used in FCP. No third party software is required.
You cannot take an FCE project to FCP. 7toX will not help as FCE has no XML export.

  • From Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express

I shot something in HD on a P2 card and captured it into a computer with Final Cut Pro. I want to edit it on my laptop at home, on which I have Final Cut Express. If I export the FCP file and make it a quicktime file to use on my FCE, will the video maintain its HD properties? (Forgive my ignorance. I'm still learning.) Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing but if you shot it on P2 media in HD it's probably DVCPRO HD. The codec for this format is only available with FCP. You can't edit this edit in FCE unless you export it to the the Apple Intermediate Codec. Yes, there will be some quality loss in the porcess.
