Final Cut Express installation

Can I install Final Cut Express on my iMac at work and then un-install it and install it on a second iMac. My older iMac at home does not have the power to run it and I'm getting a new iMac model in June. In the meantime I'd like to start working with the software at work and start editing the hours of video I have.

Hello and welcome to the Forum. There are lots of experienced people here who can help you with your questions.
Yes, you can install FCE on an iMac, then uninstall it, and then install it on a different iMac. (Actually, the license allows you to install it on one desktop Mac and one laptop Mac at the same time provided you own both Macs and only run FCE on one of them at a time. That's not the case you asked about, but I thought you might like to know.)
You should be careful about potentially installing and using FCE on a computer 'at work' for personal use. Your employer may have policies against installing non-work related software; and may also have policies about personal use of a work computer.

  • G4 and Final Cut Express installation problems

Thank you in advance for any help you can send my way. Any will be greatly appreciated.
I have a PowerMac G4 (gray) tower. Recently, under the advice of a Mac tech, I installed a 200GB harddrive and a Sonnet's Tempo ATA133 PCI card so that I could successfully install and run FinalCut Express. Now not only do I have the previous installed but I also have 1GHz CPU Speed, 1GB of RAM, DVD/Superdrive, Mac OS 10.4.3 and more than enough memory for the installation.
So now for the two strange parts:
    1) When trying to install Final Cut it says that I cannot install the software because I lack the hardware.
    2) And now I noticed in my System Profiler it says that my Machine Name is "Power Mac G3 (PCI graphics)" which I know it is not!
Do I have the wrong PCI card? Did I install it wrong? Am I missing something?
For your reference, listed below is what is required to run Final Cut Express:
    Minimum Hardware Requirements
    • A Macintosh computer with a 500 MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor (550 MHz for PowerBook G4, 450 MHz for dual-processor Power Mac G4 or G5) and an AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme
    • 384 MB of RAM (512 MB required for RT Extreme and Soundtrack)
    • For HDV: A Macintosh computer with a 1 GHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor and 1 GB of RAM
    • 1 GB of available disk space for application installation
    • 5 GB of available disk space for Soundtrack content
    • 9 GB of available disk space for LiveType content
    • DVD drive for software installation
    Minimum Software Requirements
    • Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later
    • QuickTime 6.5.2 or later
    Thanks again.

    HI Coyote,
This could prove to be a problem. You definitely need 65MB of VRAM to run FCP. And FCP is a fairly sophisticated video editing program and takes time to learn. Unless the iBook has DVD burn capability, which I doubt, even with an older version of iLife, you wouldn't be able to burn to DVD's. But you could use iMovie, which is part of iLife to view video that's been uploaded to the iBook. Another potential problem is, I think this particular iBookG4's factory drive is 60GB. Video editing requires huge amounts of drive space to run without crashing. iLife 05 requires 4.3GB of drive space. iLife 05 requires 256MB of RAM, but runs much more efficiently with 512MB.
So, you have several glitches. Limited drive space, limited memory, insufficient VRAM, and no DVD burn capability. You wouy also need a camcorder that is compatible with the iBookG4.
I wish I had better news... here is a link to Apple's information for minimum requirements for iLife 05: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306338

  • Final Cut Express re-installation

Hi, after purchasing iMac in October 2010 i had Final Cut Express installed with the system.  Unfortunately, this was the line of iMacs with the defective seagate HD and it crashed in June 2012.  Hurricane Sandy flooded the basement and destroyed Final Cut Express installation CD (though that was the least of my problems at the time!)  Now I'm trying to re-install the program onto the iMac.  Called AppleCare and tried to get them to send me another installation CD but the support hotline didn't seem to know how to do this.  Called today and was told that I could re-install the program via the website, but I tried and it only seems you can download updates.  What's the best way to proceed?  Thanks!

I would call Apple Support and re-explain the situation. It would help, I would think, if you have any purchase documentation.
If the first contact person cannot help you, ask them to elevate the case to the next level or put you in contact with support personal that can give you a definitive answer to obtaining the disc.
Hope it works out for you.

  • Installation skips Final Cut Express upgrade; installs only Soundtrack/LivT

Maybe I'm missing something. I've tried installing FCE HD 3.5 upgrade over the previous version, and then tried uninstalling Final Cut Express 3.1 completely and installing Final Cut Express 3.5 alone, but I can't seem to install it. Even after running disk utility and making sure that I was logged in as Administrator, correctly entering License, then Selecting Destination, the installation type still only lists the SoundTrack package (4.GB) and LiveType (9.7GB) as viable installations. And both installed fine. The Final Cut Express HD package (18.6MB) is grayed out and unavailable.
What's going on? I believe my iMac G4 fits the minimum system requirements. Any suggestions?
    iMac (15 flat-panel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1GB, 800mhz, 66GB on hard drive available for installation
    iMac (15 flat-panel)   Mac OS X (10.3)

I installed the FCE 3.5 upgrade without unistalling any thing of the 3.0.1 version I had (actually I wasn't sure that was the right approach, and the enclosed booklet wasn't really clear about).
Installation was straightforward; the installation type listed all three programs (FCE, Soundtrack, LiveType) with the "Upgrade" label, and I had to input only the upgrade reg.number.
Probably you should try again a clean reinstall of the 3.0.1 version first and then upgrade.

  • Final Cut Express HD installation

I am new to Apple. I recently acquired the Mac OSX 10.4.7. I purchased Final cut Express HD Version 3.0 off ebay. It will not run on my machine. It keeps saying I need a graphics card. Can any of you experts tell me how I can get it to operate. Thanks

As I said, hit the "esc" key and FCE should load normally.
However, it is not really designed for the Core Duo iMac so it will probably run slowly etc.
You need the 3.5 Upgrade which will work perfectly on your machine.
    Ian.

  • Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Quits unexpectedly while opening

Hi all. I have Final Cut Express HD 3.5. I bought it several years ago and used it on my Mac Book Pro (2006 model). I bought an iMac a few years later (December 2009). I can't remember what OS the iMac came with, but it's currently running 10.6.8.
I recently was asked to collaborate on a video project, so I installed FCE to use on the project. The installation went just fine, and the software didn't seem to disagree with my system, nor the system with the software.
I then went to open* FCE, and got the following error message:
"Final Cut Express HD quit unexpectedly while using the Impromptu Analysis plug-in."
*Note: this is the first time opening the software on this computer after the first time installing it on this computer.
Here is a shot of the loading/splash screen:
It tells me that while loading Audio Filters, It comes across a "MOSO: Impromptu Analysis" and somehow doesn't like it.
Live type and Sound track both seem to work fine.
    THINGS I HAVE TRIED:
    1. the first thing I did was a search of my computer for "Impromptu Analysis," and found a .component (I think) plugin. it wasn't in the traditional audio plugins folder, but within a folder containing the application (Impromptu) in my documents folder My first instinct was "get that thing out of here!!" so I deleted it. problem not solved.
    2.  Did a complete software update of everything, verify and repaired permissions, and still nothing.
    3. uninstalled and reinstalled, and nothing.
    4. Ran software update again.
    5. reboots between each step.
    6. Bid on Final Cut studio 5 on ebay. I've since been outbid (but still watching like a hawk).
What I don't understand is even after deleting the plugin, rebooting and an uninstall and reinstall of FCE, and it's still messing with the plugin.
    THINGS I HAVEN'T TRIED
    1. upgrading to 4.0 (don't have a disc, and it's not available for a free update, since it's discontinued, is it?)
    2. reinstalling the plugin that's causing the issue
    3. deleting or resetting the preferences of the AU plugins list. (not sure how to).
my best guess on the problem plug-in is that it is part of an install of the live coding software called Impromptu (http://impromptu.moso.com.au/). But it's blowing my mind as to why it's still messing things up even after I deleted it. I don't think I ever did a proper install of Impromptu, nor did I do a proper uninstall...
If anyone can point me in the right direction, that'd be super swell.
    Thanks!

Well never mind everyone. Apparently, Searching your computer for plugins through spotlight doesn't search the plugins folder in either the "Macintosh HD" location or the ~/Library locations.. Go figure.
I went to re-install the trouble plugin, and to my surprise, I still had 2 copies of the plugin installed on my system. I trashed them, as well as the other 15 or so of their brother and sister Impromptu Plugins, and got the software to open! now all I have to do is figure out what codec/setup to use.

Seems like an awful waste of money...

There is a bug in the installer program that will not allow it to install into a Lion or Mt. Lion Mac.  However FCE 3.5 is a Universal app, which will run on Intel Macs without reference to Rosetta.
Due to its age, there may be some incongruities in this program when run in Lion or Mt. Lion.

How recently did you purchase this program; and did you purchase it new?  Have you been able to get use from this purchase on your previous Mac?
    peetapix wrote:

There are two methods to install FCE 3.5 into your Mt. Lion Mac:
    1)  Use Pacifist
    2)  Use Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method for FCS2, but modified for use with FCE 3.5 (if you are able to figure out those modifications):

  • I just bought final cut express 4 Academic and it fails downloading!!!

I just bought final cut express 4 at my Sister's university. They have a mac store there and the listed price for FCE 4 was $70, so i bought it. After opening it the download failed. What do I do?! Please help!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
What download? Do you mean the installation failed? You need to contact Apple with installation issues. Before doing that, it might be worthwhile to completely uninstall FCE, use Disk Utility to repair your permissions, then reboot. Here's a free utility to help with the uninstall. (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm)
You need to be doing the installation and first run of the software from an Admin account on your Mac.

  • Resurrect Final Cut Express HD 3.0?

Pleae advise what path is required to move from Final Cut Express HD 3.0 to Final Cut Express 4. Recently purchased iMac G5 with i5 Intel processor. Transferred all the content from my PPC G5 using Migration Assistant. All went well. However, Final Cut Express HD 3.0 will not open. Would really like to continue using FCE for more complex projects.

The problem with FCE3 and Lion is that although FCE 3 will run on it, its' installer is PPC and will not run. I managed to get it on my Lion partition by doing the following (these steps will only work if you have a workiing FCE on a machine running Snow Leopard; that is how it worked for me.) I do not know if it will also work with older OS versions, but you can try at your own risk:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38198?viewlocale=en_US
I followed this information here to copy all the files from the Snow Leopard partition into the very same spots on my Lion partition. Since it's on a separate machine in your  case, copy the files, make a note of what they are and where they came from and then copy them onto an external hard drive temporarily. Then hook up the drive to the new Mac and insert the files into the very same spots. Restart the Mac, keep your fingers crossed: FCE will launch......

  • Final Cut Express 2.0.3 with Tiger 10.4.4: No Firewire anymore?

Hello world, am I the only one with this problem?
I just purchased and installed Tiger 10.4.3. (Yes, I'm an idiot.)
Well, Final Cut Express 2.0.3 -- which ran so well with Panther -- is now useless with Tiger. I also just downloaded and installed the Tiger 10.4.4 update; Apple says this update woud fix some Firewire problems. But it didn't fix my Firewire problems.
I connected a Canon XLS1 camera to my G5 Dual 2MHz: The Mac's System Info detects it as XLS1.
I also connected a Panasonic NV DV-2000 player/recorder to the same G5: The Mac's System Info detects it as an "unknown device" though, but it detects it. This device worked always well with the old Panther.
Anyway, neither the Canon nor the Panasonic gets access to Final Cut. Only the Mac's System Info detects them.
Ok, now I have a few widget toys and a few other cosmetic things for 130 Euro, but no Final Cut anymore. Heck, I bought this Mac to work with Final Cut.
If this problem cannot be fixed, I'll return to Panther and want my money back. There was no warning that Tiger wouldn't run with Final Cut Express. I can't believe that I am the only one on earth who works with the above devices and versions.
Thank you for your attention! Any hints are greatly appreciated.
    Best regards

    Heureka, here's the solution, indeed:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
I can tell you why it confused me yesterday: I tried a similar trick before: As described by Apple, I deleted in "library/receipts" all quicktime PKG files with a version number in the file name. I also (not instructed by Apple) deleted my 7.0.4 quicktime application in the "applications" folder. Then I re-executed PKG of quicktime 7.0.4 (this PKG was already on my harddisk, so I thought I don't need to re-download 7.0.4). The installation programme started. Shortly before the end it terminated: "Installation not successful."
Today I did it exactly as described in the article linked above. In other words, after the deletion of the existing PKG files, I didn't re-execute that 7.0.4 PKG which was already on my hard disk, but I re-downloaded that same file from apple. (Also, this time I didn't delete the 7.0.4 Quicktime APP in the "applications" folder). The downloaded file and the included installation program looked exactly like what I already had on my disk. But for some reason it did the trick. Very bizarre. Perhaps it's a matter of the right sequence of the various installations.
Yesterday I was really disappointed. Now I'm happy again. I hope it stays stable.
And for the next five years I will follow again my old motto: "Never update a well working system!"
    Thank you for your help!
    Cheers.

  • Is there any final cut express 4.0.1 update available?

Is there any final cut express 4.0.1 update available? I want a RELIABLE source to update this, preferably by APPLE, Inc.
I'm VERY disappointed that APPLE does not have that on the website. I SUPPORTED you by buying a product and in return you do NOT have a place for us to install upgrades especially if consumers like me got a new laptop. That is just plain MEAN. I mean, REALLY.
Thank you and I hope to get this as soon as possible.

Final Cut Express was discontinued 3 years ago (June 2011).  It was replaced by Final Cut Pro X.
FCE is no longer supported by Apple.  That does not mean it won't run on Lion, Mt. Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite, however with each successive upgrade to OS X it becomes less & less likely that FCE will be installable or even run properly after being installed, because it is so much older than the current versions of OS X.   That said, the FCE 4.0.1 update is still available through Software Update provided you already have FCE 4.0 installed on your Mac.  The 4.0.1 update is not available "publicly," meaning you can't search for it on Apple's website and find it; FCE 4.0 has to already be installed on your Mac and you have to update it via Software Update on your Mac.
One forum contributor DID find a way to download the 4.0.1 update without using Software Update, see this thread -> Where can I download Final Cut Express 4.0.1?
My advice is to move to Final Cut Pro X since you have a Mac running Mavericks (10.9.5).
I understand your frustration at having purchased some software and now you can no longer use it.  However, obsolescence is a natural part of the technology world.  FCE is now obsolete and has been replaced by Final Cut Pro X.   If you have OS X Lion or any later version of OS X installed on your Mac, you should be looking at Final Cut Pro X.

  • Download Final Cut Express 4.0.1 impossible,help

After a new load of Os 10.5.8 (PowerMac G5) and load of Final Cut Express 4.0 no update for Version 4.0.1 is possible. After Softwareupdate: System has the newest version. What can I do better?

I just figured out how to install the 4.0.1 update in Mavericks. The problem is that the old Software Update mechanism is completely gone in Mavericks.
    1. Install Final Cut Express 4.0 on a computer running Mountain Lion (but I’m sure that Lion or Snow Leopard would work, as well).
    2. On the command line use “sudo softwareupdate --download FCE401-4.0.1”.
    3. Go to /Library/Updates/ and look in the various folders therein for FinalCutExpress4.0.1Update.pkg. This is about 128 MB in size.
    4. Copy that installer .pkg file to your Mavericks computer and double-click.
Presto! This will update your previously installed Final Cut Express 4.0 to Version 4.0.1.

  • Final Cut Express 4.0 Run under 10.4.10

In our school we have Mac and PC together.
    We got Final Cut Studio.
I have Final Cut Express 4.0 and want to install it on
    the mac.
The problem is it won't install because it requires 10.4.10 the installer says.
Is their any way around it to install. We have Tiger but no the latest version.
We can't update since the Tech guy is a paid in the you know what.
    What can I do ?

Whoa, hold on just a minute.
    FCE 4.0 requires 10.4.10 and QuickTime 7.2.
You should upgrade OSX first, then QT if necessary.
Upgrading to 10.4.10 is not that big a deal, but it should NOT be done via Software Update (aka "click on the Apple logo in the Menu bar ..." ).
Always prepare for an OSX upgrade by:
1 - backup all your data folders/files that are on your system (internal) HD
2 - repair permissions on your system HD (Disk Utility > Repair Permissions)
3 - download the appropriate OSX Combo updater, NOT the Incremental updater (which is what you get via Software Update). To do this you have to go to the Apple downloads website and find the 10.4.10 combo updater --> Apple > Downloads > All Downloads > Apple > Mac OSX Updates > 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC or Intel, depending on what flavor Mac you have)
4 - make sure NO applications are running, then run the OSX Combo Updater
5 - if necessary, also update QuickTime AFTER updating OSX
    6 - THEN install FCE 4.0
