Final Cut Express Lost Registration Key after Restore

I just got a new Mac and had to restore to it from my Timemachine Backup. GADZOOKS, when I started Final Cut Express it is asking for my registration key! Not a big deal, because it's on the box... but I won't be able to get it for a few days. Anyone have any idea why this didn't back up?! And how can I avoid this in the future?

It's not that it doesn't back up, it's that it doesn't restore. ProApps puts things in system library's that don't restore unless you do a complete system restore from TM, which you don't want to do on a new computer. You should reinstall FCE and other pro type apps from their install discs.

  • Final Cut Express HD registration problem

Is there some way to invoke the registration window to get Final Cut Express HD to attempt to send the registration back to Apple? I installed it on the master iMac that I'm going to clone to 16 other iMacs, but when it gets cloned, the 16 will need to be re-registered, of course (they're individual licenses, sadly, and not multi-user ones).
If I delete "Library/Application Support/ProApps/Final Cut Express System ID" it then prompts for my name and serial number, but because I'm behind a proxy server and a firewall, the registration doesn't work. I'd like to try invoking the registration window to see if using a different proxy server will help, but the first time I entered my serial number, it sat there for a while and then complained about not being able to send the registration but it did say something like further attempts will be made later to send it. I want to bring this attempt forward, so that I can be sure I can register this software on all 16 iMacs before next semester.
    Thanks.

Presumably you have 16 licenses. If you're going to push a disk image to multiple machines they will all have the same serial number. You will then need to go to Library/Application Support/ProApps on each machine and remove the Final Cut Express system ID. When the application is launched on each machine you can enter a separate serial number for each machine and register it.

  • Final Cut Express Shuts down right after capturing

    Hello all:
I am using FCE 3.5. I have used this for about a year now and I have developed a problem with FCE shutting down right after I hit escape. I run a lab for a university and it is doing it on ALL of them so it isn't an isolated incident. I repair permissions, reset the PRAM, trashed the prefs and I don't know what else to do.
I am running imac G5's using 10.4.11 and the new imacs running leopard. Both sets are doing it.
Any help would be appreciated since our classes start soon.
    Thank you.

Can you tie the crashes to a recent event: a software update, a new piece of hardware? What else is connected to the computers?
(You have, of course, triple-checked that the FCE Easy Setup matches the footage you're capturing, yes?)
After the program crashes, is the captured footage saved?
What's the lab setup? Does each student have an individual user account? On each computer?
    Lots of questions, I know...
    Here's a suggestion:
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Create a new admin account on one computer. Set the FCE Scratch Disk to the internal drive. Disconnect everything but the camera. Try to capture. See what happens.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 - 5 minute captures then freeze

Something I have found with Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0.
After Updating to Tiger - 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.4.1 - Both Pro 4.5 and Express 3.0 will not capture more then 5 minutes and 12 seconds. If you are having this issue the solution I used to fix both Pro and Express issues was an update on the software. Final Cut Pro 5 fixed the problem (or 6 if you can) and with Final Cut Express, version 3.5 fixed the issue but if you can go with FCX 4.
Let me know if this helped or if you have found a different solution. Downgrading the os might help but that is too much of a pain and it's time to upgrade the software anyway.

    #29: Need AGP Graphics card
Shane's Stock Answer #29 – Error: “Need AGP Graphics card”
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302667
The Final Cut software is looking for a graphics card type that is required for that version of the software. FCP 4 and FCP 4.5 were released when AGP cards were the requirement. Attempting to open this on a Mac with a PCIe graphics card, such as an Intel Mac, will cause this error. FCP 4.5 is not supported on the Intel Macs. If you happen to have a PowerPC Quad processor Mac and get this error, you can try this hack:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
You can also press the "esc" key as you launch FCP. This enables FCP to open and run, but know that it might not work optimally.
If that doesn’t work, or if you have an Intel Mac, you are going to have to upgrade to a supported version of FCP…and FCP 6, part of Final Cut Studio 2, is the latest version.

  • Final Cut Express 4 - why doesn't it support HD?

I purchased a Canon G12 camera that shots HD video, and I purchased Final Cut Express 4. Unfortunately, after I ran into cropping problems while editing my first movie, I found out Final Cut Express 4 doesn't support the HD format. Discouraging. Why doesn't FCE4 support HD?

FCE certainly does support high def (HD) video.
The problem is that your Canon G12 shoots video as H.264 .mov files, which cannot be edited directly in FCE.
You need to convert the G12 videos to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec in order to edit them in FCE.  Download a copy of MPEG Streamclip (free) to do the conversion.  Alternatively you could also use Clipwrap2 to convert your G12 videos.

  • Interface text disappeared in Final Cut Express after upgrade to 10.6

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and now none of the interface text will display in Final Cut Express. (The top menus are OK, but no file or sequence titles, effects names, etc, within Final Cut project windows or the like.)
Immediately after the upgrade I was presented with several "Font Conflict" errors claiming that some fonts had to be moved to the trash because they conflicted with system display fonts, and I said yes. The fonts were Helvetica, HelveticaNeue, and a couple of others.
Any ideas of how I can get text back? Thanks!
    -i-

I was able to fix this by restoring my ~/Library/Fonts folder from a backup prior to the 10.6 upgrade. After a restart I once again received the following errors:
"There is a conflict with the _______ font file. This font file contains a font name that conflicts with a system font required by Mac OS X to display onscreen text. You should move this font file to the Trash."
The fonts it said were conflicting: Helvetica, HelveticaNeue.dfont, Lucida Grande, and Monaco.
This time I said "Allow Conflict" on all four dialog boxes and launched Final Cut... everything is back to normal!
Not sure what kind of "conflict" it's referring to, but apparently moving these font files to the trash as OS X prompted me to do broke a number of apps.
Should I report this as a bug?

  • Made a 2 minute edit on Final Cut Express but at the 30 seconds (after I exported), there's a clip showing up that is not in my project, a clip i don't want in there, a glitch, how can I correct this problem? I don't want to start over again :(

    Basically, I have 2 problems:
    1) When I export it shows this clip that's not in my normal project and it ruins my project by having this clip in there; it's like a glitch. I tried to change the clip, and and still doesn't make the project normal again. Tried a new sequence and dragging the project into HD Mode and to no avail.
    My camera:
    HD: 1080p
    Settings: At Hd
    2)
Also, it's only displaying black bars above my project, even after exporting at 720p. I just don't want this random clip in my project or the black bars. I'm using Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any possible idea what this could be? Any help woud be much appreciated! I'm clueless on this.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?  : )

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.

  • My HD died on my iMac. I replaced it and lost everything that was on it. I found my source disks from my original purchase for Final Cut Express HD 3.5.  I now have Maverick ISO and it will not let me load my software so I can continue my film work. ???

My HD died on my iMac. I replaced it and lost everything that was on it. I found my source disks from my original purchase for Final Cut Express HD 3.5.  I now have Maverick ISO and it will not let me load my software so I can continue my film work. How do I get it too recover it without paying for it again since I paid for it already and have projects in progress that need to be completed?

    1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
    2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
    a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
    b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

What to do if Final Cut Express was installed after Aperture, on a new MaBook Pro Retina running OS X 10.7.4?

Bear in mind 10.7 and FCE are not supported working together.
FCP X is the supported application for Lion.
Users find FCE can mostly work to not working at all with Lion.
You can dowmlaod a trial of FCP X from the App Store.

  • Mousekeys, Stickey keys and Final Cut Express HD

I recently purchased and began learning FCE HD. I am a physically challenged user with no use of my arms and hands (quadriplegic). I use a mouthstick pointer and Mousekeys and Stickey Keys to operate mmy iMac G5. For those of you not familiar with these utilities (located in th Universal Access area of System Preferences), Mousekeys allows me to use the numbered keys of the numeric keypad to control my mouse actions, and Sticky Keys enables me to perform key functions that require me to press more than one key down at a time (you know, Command-Q, Option-1, etc.). I coul not operate my system without these utilities.
I am really upset to find that when using Final Cut Express, my mouse pointer locks up my system regularly. For example, I dragged some clips down into the time line, and whenever I went into that area to experiment and move the clips around, my mouse pointer/system would immediately lock. When I asked my friend to move the regular mouse around, it worked fine, and the system "unlocked". This is extremely frustrating to me because I depend on Mousekeys exclusively in operating my computer. When my sytem locks (whick it never has before this), I am unable to do ANYTHING if there is no one around to assist me. It really stinks!
I don't know what Apple technical support can do to assist me with this matter, but I am hopeful that some of the users in this form would give a shot at using the Mousekey feature so that you can see what I am talking about. I just forked out a good amount of cash to buy this program, and I will be very upset if I am unable to use it; not only because of the money I spent, but because I truly want to be able to use the program.!
I will greatly appreciate any and all help in this matter.
    Thanks and best regards,
    Jeff Castaldo

Sorry to hear about your system problems. I can't help you any but if you do not find help here try posting you question at the L.A. Final Cut Users Group at http://www.lafcpug.org/ These are the guys and gals who edit feature films and large scale videos. I have not posted there but from lurking they seem to be very willing to help and you do not have to be a member to post in their forum.
Surely one of them has heard of this and may have a work around.
    Wish I could help more.

  • Final Cut Express HD (3.5) closes right after opening?

    Hi,
I believe years ago I had this same issue and it was as simple as deleting the preferences (??).
Basically, what's happening is I just installed FCE HD (3.5) on my G4. I meet the system requirements to run the application AND Soundtrack Pro and LiveType open and run fine. FCE closes immediately after opening and then I get an error: "The Application Final Cut Express Quit Unexpectedly."
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Yeah, sorry for being so confusing. That's exactely what I did. Since my main HD is 500Gb and my secondary drive is 120Gb, I just copied all the necessary files to the 500, formatted the 120, reinstalled OSX, and booted to it. The intention was to let the FCE software think it was installing on a fresh drive (which, it was).
However, even then it won't let me install FCE. Just LT and Soundtrack. ?? I'm a bit confused because the system requirements for Soundtrack and LT are the same for FCE.
I'm trying to install it on a Dual 1.25ghz G4 Quicksilver with 1.5Gb Ram. ??
The funny thing is I WAS able to install the complete program initially when I got it. I had a previous copy of Final Cut Express (1) on my main drive. I ran the FCE HD installer, and the program installed just fine. However, it kept closing right after it would open. I figured it was a preference conflict between the newer version (3.5) and the old version (1.1). So, I've done my best trying to erase all evidence of FCE ever being on the drive and still get nowhere ??
    Thanks!

  • Serial Number for Final Cut Express 3.5 upgrade is lost in melt down

After a major melt down of logic board, internal and external hard drives I am trying to reload programs. I have loaded final cut express 3.0 and when I try to load my 3.5 upgrade it asks for a serial number. Even though I have the packaging it came in I can not find the number. I registered the software and would like to know if there is a location with Apple I can find the software I have registered and get the serial number from that. Or any other way to find it.

Apple customer service was very good and had the serial number within 2 days. Thank you for the suggestion.

  • Lost Serial Number For Final Cut Express 3.5

Okay, here's the story. A long time ago (Like a year), on the left side of the finder window where library, documents, applications, etc. is, for some reason I accidentally dragged out the library icon. About a month ago I took the library icon from in the finder window into the left side of the finder bar. When I logged out and logged back in, my whole account had been reset. I was able to recover all my data, because it did not delete the data, it had only moved it. But all my applications were reset, including Final Cut Express 3.5. I have not used it since today. Today I tried to open FCE, and it asked me for my serial number. Since all my applications were reset, FCE thought this was the first time it was being opened. To get to the point, I no longer have the serial number. I looked for the information so I could get a new serial number (Support page URL http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1861), but I could not find the information. If I can never find the information, I can never open the application again unless I buy a new copy. If anyone can help me in any way to fix this problem that would be VERY helpful. Thank you.

If you have lost the serial number the only thing you can do is contact Apple with some kind of proof of purchase.
