Final Cut Express Manual printing issue

Hi
I'm recently purchased an IMac and don't have a lot of experience with the Apple operating system and Apple products. So if this question is more appropriate to another forum, please don't get mad.
I want to start using Final Cut Express. The Help manual is very long and for now I just have a dinky little color printer. I wanted to be able to just print out chapters or select pages from the manual that I could read at my leisure. I can't figure out how to select a page from "Preview" and print it.
I've tried to highlight a page and then print it. However, when I go to "Print the selected page" all I keep getting is the first page of the manual.
I'm sorry to ask such a stupid novice question and any help or direction of where to get help would be appreciated.
Thank you

In the Preview window enter numbers in the From: To: fields. Only those pages in the selected range will print.

  • Final Cut Express HD- Print to Video

I am trying to export my video project onto the tape of my Canon HV10 camera, and for some reason it is not able to record onto there. Both are capable of HDV format, and when I click to print to video oftentimes the connected camera will not do anything. Occasionally my project will begin to play full screen on the computer, as I am pretty sure it is supposed to do, and then my camera will be recording and then flash the error "Check HDV/DV connection". I have done this several times and checked the connection and there is nothing wrong. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? This is a school assignment that is due tomorrow morning, so I am kind of on a deadline here...

Here are some things you can check -
Are you sure you have your camera set for DV-IN (or perhaps Digital-IN in your case).
When you have your camera connected to your Mac, can you see your sequence on the camcorder screen?
If those things check out, try just playing your timeline and not using Print to Video. You will have to manually start your camcorder recording before you start playing the timeline.
(I've often had problems with Print to Video and don't use it for that reason. Just playing the timeline sequence works for me.)

  • Does final cut express support avchd lite?

Will final cut express resolve this issue, being that most of Panasonic's point and shoot cameras use avchd lite?
    Reasons I bought this program:
    One its good for editing.
Two it says its avchd compatible on the box.
However this does not seem to be the case.
    definition of avchd lite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

You make a good point about the audio. I have a Canon SD870 and recently shot some stills and video with it at a birthday party. It takes great shots, but I was actually impressed with the video and audio, probably because I did not know what to expect. In fact, it gave me enough material to edit a little movie for the birthday boy,(he was 50!) in imovie9. The speeches came out clear and the video was very acceptable.
But things can always be better, and that is why I want to upgrade to FCE, and buy a still camera that can shoot HD on the fly and can be used in FCE. I have been a Broadcast Sports TV cameraman for over 25 years, and I am very tired of lugging around bulky TV camera equipment. It seems a novelty to be able to shoot and edit HD on a pocket size camera.
Thanks for you input Al, I appreciate it. I still have two outstanding questions and I apologize if you have already answered them. First, How good/bad is the video quality with HD video captured on AVCHD Lite and then converted to use in FCE? Second, where does MPEG 4 rate in all this. Thank you.

  • FINAL CUT EXPRESS AND CANON XL-2

With the capturing in FCE from the canon xl2 what should my easy settings be?

Okay I have read in the Final Cut Express manual that you can use a camera that has VTR mode. But i don't think that the canon xl2 has that mode. But I read on other sites that VTR is the same as VCR. I'm not sure which to believe, nor am I sure if what I'm trying to do will work. I'm trying to use my xl2 as a VTR device to display on to a tv. If anyone know how or if this will even work please help.. Thank you!

  • Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express -- Format issues?

    Hi,
I'm shooting a project on a Panasonic HVX-200A, and my cameraman is going to import the footage to his Final Cut Pro station. He's then going to transfer the FCP footage and data over to an external hard drive, which I am going to use to edit the film using Final Cut Express.
Will there be any formatting issues if I bring the data from Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express?
    Thanks!!
    Sameer Ketkar

Clip files can be easily imported into FCE if they are QuickTime DV-NTSC/DV-PAL or Apple Intermediate Codec (720p30, 1080i50/60). If they are other formats/codecs they should be converted to DV or AIC before importing into FCE.
FCPro project files cannot be imported into FCExpress.
I'd suggest a trial run before committing the project to this workflow.

  • Issues Capturing with Final Cut Express

    Hi
I am currently having issues capturing with Final Cut Express. I am using a Firewire 800 gold speed cable 9pin/4pin with my Sony LSF-S58 camera. I use mini DV tapes and usually capture on other computers with no problems. However this time I am using Final Cut Express version 4.0.1 along with a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter so it'll connect with my MAC Book Pro (Operating system OS X 10.6.8). The issue is when I open Final Cut's capture option there is a message at the bottom that says "No Communicatin" I have tried various settings within easy set-up and nothing seems to work as well as browsing this help board along with others looking for the answer. Any help anyone can provide would be great. Thanks.

When I Google LSF-S58, I get a Sony Lens Hood, not a camera. Are you recording in HD or SD?
Have you used the Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor successfully on your computer with other devices?
Have you used the Thunderbolt port successfully with other Thunderbolt devices?
I don't know if this is applicable to your computer, but there is a Thunderbolt software update for 10.6.8 here:

  • HDV Timecode Issue/Workaround for Final Cut Express?

I have a Canon HV20 1080i HD Camera with Final Cut Express 4 HD. When trying to capture HDV video Final Cut (and iMovie) likes to break up the video into random clips instead of the single video that I would like it to be so I can manually edit the file like normal DV video. I understand the reason is because of no valid timecode data coming over Firewire from the camera. Is there a workaround to get this working?

The iMovie 08 clips have names like "clip-2007-08-01 12;41;53.mov" and are stored in folders grouped by dates/events. The date on the clips' files is the date you transferred them to the disk but the filename (above) is when the camera recorded the tape. You can import these files into FCE and the clip names inherit the file names.
The "properties" of the clip as shown in FCE shows the files' modification dates/times (creation time in this case) -- not the info from the tape. I think that's the case with material captured in FCE 3.5 but I haven't captured anything directly into FCE 4 to compare.
So regarding an answer for your 'home movies', the clips names will start out with the date it was taken but the properties shows the date you transferred the tape to the computer. (Sorry if I'm being redundant here.)
Regarding the quality, the FCE project is 1080i and retains the quality you captured. I have no experience exporting it to MPEG4 for a PC. YMMV. There are a bunch of options upon export. I just told it to generate 1080 at the original FPS and 1024kbps (just a number I picked). It think it said an eight minute video is going to be 100meg and take an hour to produce on my iMac. (A quick calculation tells me the size may be off by a factor of two.) The Quicktime forum may be a better place to ask this question.

  • Serial code issues for Final Cut Express HD

My birthday present computer came with Final Cut Express HD pre-installed as a little bonus from my dad, but I can't actually use it until I know the serial code to register it. I've looked everywhere but I have found no information on the Apple website as to where one finds the serial code for a pre-installed program. I actually have this same issue with Soundtrack and LiveType, so if anyone has any idea about where to look, that would be wonderful... in the meantime I will keep searching. Thank you.

Even if the software comes pre-installed there should be disks with it. Are you sure it was pre-installed? I never knew Apple to do this in the US with pro apps products. They made bundles that came with computers, discount price if you buy a new computer, but never heard of them being pre-installed. Maybe your Dad has the boxes.

  • Compatibility issues with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro

I'm getting ready to edit a project and I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro. I've never used Express put I assume I would be able to make cuts, simple effects and titles. Is this correct.
If I transfer project files from one platform to the other will i run into any issues?
Thanks for all and any help.

    {quote}
Although they operate in a similar fashion that are not fully compatible. You can open a FCE project in FCP, but once you've edited it in FCP you can't go back to FCE.

  • Capturing Footage from Canon HV40 to Final Cut Express Issue

I own a Canon HV40 camcorder and shot a short film using the 24p HDV 24F Cine Mode feature (for film look). I've captured the footage into Final Cut Express, but the footage is running at a faster speed. I know this may have something to do with frames per second in the user preferences section.
Does anyone have the concrete solution to this problem and will I have to recapture my footage under a different setting?
    Please advise.
    Thank you!
    - Eric

    Hi Eric,
FCE only supports frame rates of 60i, 30p, 50i, and 25p. To edit 24p footage you'd need Final Cut Pro.

  • Field encoding issue/ FINAL CUT EXPRESS

Hello, I am editing a video for television broadcast. The requirements ask for "Field Encoding Order:Bottom or Upper field first. We do not accept progressive."
Does any one know how to do this for FINAL CUT EXPRESS? Or do I need compressor?

    What is your source material?
What is your Easy Setup (actually, your Sequence Setting)? Control-click the Sequence name in the FCE Browser, then select Item Properties. What does it say for Compressor, Vid Rate, Frame Size & Field Dominance?
The request indicates they want interlaced material. Unless you know you shot progressive, you probably already have interlaced video.

  • Final Cut Express HD and Mac Pro Issue

    Howdy all,
I have Final Cut Express HD version 3.0 (LAST year's version not this year's version). I've been using it for some time now on my G4 iMac, but just acquired a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro. I copied over the application and support files to the Mac Pro but when I try to run the program I get an error that I don't have an AGP graphics card. I tried following the advice in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=445909&tstart=60
But none of those suggestions work. Hitting the escape key just stops the program. Changing the plist file does nothing. The program attempts to start and then just stops.
I'd really rather not go out and buy this year's copy if I don't have to as Apple is probably going to be releasing a new version in a couple months anyhow and then I'll upgrade.
Please let me know if there is a work around for this. I would have posted in the other thread so as to not start a duplicate thread, but it had already been archived.
    Thanks,
    Jon

if the OP used Migration Assistant or disk cloning
software to make a copy oif his system drive it is
possible to copy the app without using the
installation disks, although these methods of
transferring apps from PowerPC to Intel macs will
    undoubtedly cause problems.
This doesn't make sense now that I think about it. If the Application is purely a PowerPC app, then copying to an Intel machine it or re-installing it from scratch should make no difference. The same stuff is all going to be installed anyhow.
    To Ian,
It can be copied w/o installing, of that I am sure. You can't just copy the application package though. There's a number of support folders in both the /Library directory and ~/Library directory. Somewhere in there is the licensing info.
Anyhow, I'll try deleting all the plist files you suggest and starting over. If I have to, I will call Apple to see about getting my orignal code. After all, I have registered and they should be able to see each product I have purchased...

  • Final Cut Express issues: Video and no audio

Ok.. sorry about before. I posted in someone elses message, for that I'm sorry.
My name is Justin Smith. I'm a freelance videographer out in Kansas. I have a brand new Macbook Pro. I'm shooting with a Dvx-100. I took my camera and tried to import video into Final Cut Express. When the short video clip was finished capturing, I tried putting it to the timeline, but only the video was added. So I have video, no audio and a bunch of questions. How do I get my orginal audio from the tape onto the timeline? Also, I have a question about importing audio from say Itunes. I can import the song fine, But when I lay the track down on the timeline, I'm getting a continuous beep noise. I read the FAQ and it told me I have to convert the track to AIFF? How do I do this?

As for importing audio from iTunes, yes, you must convert it to AIFF first. iTunes can do this unless you purchased the songs from the iTunes Music Store. If you did, they are protected AAC files and won't convert. There are ways to do it but since it most likely violates the copyright, no one on this forum can legally tell you how to do it.
If they are not protected, then go to iTunes preferences, select the Advanced icon at the top and click the Importing tab. Select AIFF encoder from the "Import Using" popup menu and make sure the settings are 48khz. Then select the song from the library and choose (from the menu bar) Advanced->Convert Selection To AIFF. A new music file in AIFF format will appear in your library.
Another way is to use Quicktime Pro (the paid version of Quicktime). Open the music file in Quicktime, choose Export and select AIFF, 48Khz, 16bit for the format. Again, this won't work if its an iTunes protected file.

  • Having issues importing from my camcorder to Final Cut Express

    Hello all -
I have a JVC GZ-MG130U HDD and was told it was compatible with Final Cut Express but when I connect it to my Mac it is as if the computer will not recognize it. I don't if I have the computer set up wrong or what.. Please help..

Quite simply your camera is not suitable for FCE or any other pro editing system.
However, you should be able to use it but it will involve buying another item to convert your files into the DV format that FCE uses.
Download MPEG Streamclip free of charge and then download the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback component from Apple for about $20.
You will find all the details on the Streamclip page :-
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Use Streamclip in the following way:-
    1. Copy the files from your camera's HD onto the desktop
    2. Drag the files into the Streamclip window.
    3. Select File>Export to QuickTime.
    4. In the window that opens change the Compression (using the drop-down menu) to "AppleDV-PAL" or "Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC".
    5. Click "Make Movie".

  • Canon GL2 is not recognized by Final Cut Express

I am trying to capture from my Canon GL2. I hook up the fire wire but neither I-Movie or Final Cut Express seem to recognize the connection.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi
    My general list on this.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?

    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    *No Camera or bad import*

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.
