Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
(headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !
Yours (been there and done that - or as said in Sweden "butted Your head at it") Bengt W

  • Final Cut Express 4.0 | Cannot Capture from New Cannon Vixia HV40

My iMovie captures the footage fine. But the Final Cut Express doesn't see the camera at all - any ideas how i can actually use the Final Cut Express 4.0? Ive always been frustrated with it. even on my old camera there were Capture issues... so I gave up with it... I'm about to purchase either Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier for my business and this is frustrating to the point where I'm leaning toward Adobe. I can't even get started! Haha
    1. I opened the "Log and Capture" and there is no cameras showing.
    2. My Camera is plugged in and turned on;
    3. iMovie captures it fine;
    4. I've read that the Cannon Vixia HV40 should show up on the desktop of my mac and it doesn't but iMovie sill recognizes it;
    5. When I go into the Mac Preferences I can see the Cannon Vixia is connected by firewire

First trash your preferences. If you don't know how do a forum search.
How is the camera connected to the computer? Are there any other devices connected to the computer?
What settings are you using in FCE? Are you using the correct settings that match your media exactly?
    1. Is the camera recognized when the application is launched?
    2. Excellent. Is it in VCR mode, set to playback HDV and not downconvert?
    3. That's terrific. Then you can use that media in FCE. Or you can learn how to do it in FCE.
    4. Where did you read that? It's complete garbage. The Vixia HV40 is a tape based camera. They don't mount on the desktop.
    5. You mean System Profiler? Or something else?

  • Final Cut Express FCE Crashes when exporting to Quicktime or Quicktime conv

Final Cut Express FCE Crashes when exporting to Quicktime or Quicktime conversion!
This started completely out of the blue last night. The export gets about 30-50% done and FCE disappears from the screen and the "FCE quit unexpectedly" message pops up. This has never happened before and I was doing exports of this very project all week. All other projects won't expect, the current project won't export when brought into a new file, I tried reinstalling FCE, and I deleted the pref files spoken about in the forum.
    Any Ideas!!!????

    Try repairing permissions and re-boot.

  • No audio when capturing from vcr using canopus100

When I log and capture, the video is there, and the audio tracks "show up", however, the audio cannot be heard during capture (previewed), nor is it heard when I export the movie using QuickTime conversion.
I exported the file as a QT movie and played it back in QT, and of course, no audio.
Which switch have I not thrown here?
    Thanks
    JD

OK, I suppose it would help to know the details to provide a proper analysis of the situation.
    1) Canopus 100 is connected to vcr through the s-video input, and the audio is going in through the standard mini-jack interface.
    2) FCP Capture Settings are:
    Device Control: Non-Controllable Device
Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 KHz Copy
Scratch Disk Free Space = 852.3 GB
    3) The audio tracks "show up" when I do a capture...meaning, there are 2 tracks placed in the timeline. I can view some audio activity in the Waveform Monitor, but I do not actually hear any audio.
On that note, audio plays fine when capturing video from my Sony PD150.
Also, when using the same set up with the Canopus using iMovie, the audio previews, captures, and plays back just fine.
Thanks again. Any additional info needed just let me know. I really appreciate it!

  • Can Final Cut Express read MPEG-2 format from a Sony HDD Handycam?

I have just recently switched from PC to Mac and generally I couldn't be happier, however I recently bought the latest Sony Hard Disk Drive Handycam and it records to the HDD in MPEG-2 format. VLC will play the files but I am after software that will alow me do do some basic editing and burning to DVD. I don't want to spent the AUD$2000 on DVD Studio and was wondering if anyone knows whether Final Cut will do the job for me?

I have also switched from PC to Mac.
Generally the MPEG-2 format is a poor choice to edit in independently if you have PC or a Mac.
If you want to put MPEG-2 files a DVD you can use the program "Toast".
It will accept the MPEG files as source files when you create a DVD, but you can not do any editing.
Another option is to convert the MPEG files to AVI by using a conversion program. Search for one on the internet.

  • I have just installed my new final cut express 4 and when I try to import a photo it quits unexpectedly? Why is this?

What should I do about this and does it need to be reinstalled?? Please Help??!!

As you give no info about formats, sequence settings etc. and how you are actually trying to import it is impossible to guess.
Please give  as much information as possible as there are countless configurations and permutations of settings you may be using.

  • Recorder Error Message when capturing from camcorder

How do I overcome the Recorder Message "Date/Time recorded not found on tape and is required for scene detection". The tape concerned does have the date & time the clips were recorded shown on the camcorder screen when viewing tape playback. I have successfully downloaded the clips from the camcorder onto Windows Movie Maker. The camcorder is a new Panasonic NV-GS330 and the instructions for it advise that clips are downloaded onto a PC via a USB 2 terminal and to use the enclosed USB cable. I have complied with this. Note I can successfully download photographs into photoshop from my digital camera using the same USB. My PC uses XP home Edition with SP3, 512Mb Ram.

I am having the same error message, however the circumstances are different.
I have a Panasonic PV-GS400. One of the reasons I bought this DV camera is it's ability to be used as a digital "pass-thru" recording device for analog content from a vcr/analog camcorder, ect.
This way, I can use that function to directly record analog tape right to the PC rather than having to copy it to the DV camcorder first then copying to the PC.
Here is the catch... Everything is working fine as far as both camcorder settings being correct, all cables correct and when I playback the analog camcorders content, it indeed is being passed thru the DV camcorder AND IS BEING PLAYED PROPERLY IN THE ADOBE CAPTURE WINDOW. Audio and all.
But I CANNOT press the get video (record button). When I do, it wants to record the tape in the DV camcorder, so I removed the tape. But it still wont allow me to record what is being displayed in the capture window, even though it is playing (previewing) BEAUTIFULLY!!
I just need to be able to record what is playing in the window!

  • Upgrade from Final Cut Express to Pro 5.0

I think I made a stupid mistake. I purchased Final Cut Pro 5.0 upgrade thinking I could upgrade from Final Cut Express. But when I am asked to enter the previous versions serial number, it does not accept it. Is there any way to do this or am I going to have to buy the full version of Final Cut Pro?
Also, I have a G4 Powerbook with the following specs. Is it going to run the program if I do finally get it installed?
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX

To upgrade from FCE you need the Final Cut Pro 5 Upgrade from Final Cut Express. I just upgraded FCE and that worked fine for me.
Hope this helps answer your question...

  • Missing Chapter Markers from Final Cut Express

I have created DVDs with chapters using iMovie and iDVD. No problems. Now I have upgraded to Final Cut Express HD, and I cannot get iDVD to see its chapter markers.
I have followed the Knowledge Base article to the letter. I was careful to have nothing selected in the time line when applying markers. Following hints in this forum I have tried exporting either Chapter Markers or FCP Markers. I have tried exporting the Quicktime movie self contained or not. I have tried restarting Final Cut Express, which helped when other FCX features locked up after long sessions.
I'm stuck. Can anyone suggest something else to try?

    Hi Al Q,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
    Suggestion,two things to check:
Open the exported QuickTime movie in QT Player, do you see the chapter markers (a pop-up menu below the viewer)? If it is, then the export from FCE is okay, otherwise, something is still not correct in FCE.
Check the iDVD's Preferences, is the "automatically create scene selection menus" enabled?

  • Final cut express 1.0.1

    Hello
Just started to use final cut express And after following instructions from the "fce for dummies" manual I successfully captured a clip from my new sony dv camcorder.
however I now have audio issues which are:
The audio cannot be heard when I initialy navigate the video before capture although the audio meters are quite happily pulsing and there are audio waveforms visible.
On initial setup I selected DV-Pal(default) and in preferences I selected low (default) audio playback.
However, on the initial playback of the clip after capture the audio did play ok so this obviously proves my sound is setup correctly in the main preferences.
After closing down FCE and relaunching ,no audio was heard and I still can't retrieve it although the audio meters and waveforms all appear to be correct still.
When I close FCE a window appears and informs me that FCE unexpectedly closed down. This happened twice.
Are there issues with this early version?
Is there a conflict with this fce version and modern cameras?
Do I need to select a different dv-pal setting in easy setup?
The manual doesn't hightlight any major audio setup except for rendering which my clip did not prompt me to do (no red line) I did it any way after dragging the clip into the time line but still still no audio
I will import some sound files to see if that works but in the mean time has anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks for your attention

"I still couldn't hear the audio when navigating the video before capture but after reading the link it says I have to listen to the audio externally through my camcorder"
I take it this means when your camera is being controlled by FCE?
In this condition Firewire is active in FCE and YES the audio will need to be monitored via the camera. Quality headphones in the camera jack would do the trick.
Don't worry about the latency between the computer display and the audio heard through the camera, that's normal as well. Ideally, have the audio and video connected to an external monitor/TV to see and listen in sync.

  • How do I delete tabs in Final Cut Express?

Final Cut Express 4:  I know I can't delete whole projects; what I'm worried about is doing a bunch of short projects and having the tabs that show the titles of each project become so many I can't even use the program.  If I do 5 short videos and have 5 tabs designating them, what happens when I get to 20?  Or are they temporary files and will disappear soon?  Thanx in advance.

You can delete entire projects, but it isn't a 'one button' method.  When you start and save a new project in FCE, FCE will create several files and folders.  First is the project file which will be saved wherever you decided to save it with the name you give it.  Next, when you bring footage into a project using Log & Capture or Log & Transfer, FCE will create a folder for those files inside the Capture/Scratch folder - the sub-folder will bear the same name as the project.  And then when you render anything in that project, FCE will create a sub-folder inside the Render Files folder and the Audio Render Files folder - both will also bear the same name as the project.  FCE will also create folders for that project in the Autosave Vault folder.  To delete a project completely, navigate those files/folders and delete them and your project will no longer exist, nor will any media or renders associated with it.
    Here's a typical set up:
    Macintosh HD/
         Users/
              Projects/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Project
                   Smith Documentary
    Media Drive/
         Final Cut Express Documents/
               Audio Renders/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Autosave Vault/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Capture Scratch/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Render Files/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
To delete the project named "Jones Demo" navigate to where those files are stored and delete the folders named "Jones Demo" then empty the trash; the project and all of its associated media will be gone.  The only files that FCE might create for that project that are not stored inside a folder bearing the project's name are the Waveform Cache files - I usually delete the contents of that folder when ever I'm finished with a project.
Personally, I keep all of my project files just in case I ever need to go back to a project.  Project files are relatively small so hard drive space isn't really an issue.
As for the issue of having too many projects open at one time, that's a simple user error.  All you need to do before opening a new or another existing project is to close the project you were working on.  So if I were working on the "ABC Music Video" project and wanted to work on the "Smith Documentary" project for a while, I'd close the "ABC Music Video" Project, then open the "Smith Documentary" project.

  • Trouble importing .mov into Final Cut Express

I have a number of video clips given to me by a client in Italy and provided as .mov files. I can view them in Quicktime with no problem. I want to edit them. I have Final Cut Express 4 and when I import the files, I can see the file listed, I can hear the audio play but I can't see the video. Is this a conversion problem of some sort? Do I need to convert it first into a different format — if so, what format and what conversion software do you recommend (I tried a couple of free ones to no avail).
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi everybody,
I've solved the problem by installing Final Cut 6 (latest version): when drag and drop the clip, the settings instantly suit to the clip properties (making rendering un-necessary).
The images are still stretched but, when I deselect "Show as Sq. Pixel" from the first of those 3 menus on the canvas display, images suddenly appear exactly as I wanted (even the images quality is exactly the same as the source).
Now the problem is Compressor (still latest version):
I've tried to convert with a lot of presets, but images are still vertically stretched and images are not as clear and sharp as the source.
    Which is the right preset??
    Thank you!

  • TA26655 opening final cut express movie in imovie hd

I need to fix the exposure in a school play video that I shot, but I only have imovie hd along with idvd hd to create the dvd.
I'm going to have to purchase an older copy of final cut express to do so, I think. If I open the imovie hd file in final cut express and tone down the exposure, can I then import that "fixed" file back into imovie hd or will I need to finish editing in final cut express and make a dvd from that? My ultimate goal is to make a disk image of the dvd movie for making future copies. What is the best way to do this?

    Hi
Can only answer parts of this but anyhow.
    A. iMovie and FinalCut - or really iMovie HD6 and FinalCut Express 4 or FinalCut Pro 6 - doesn't use the same way to handle VIDEO. So one can not jump from one to the other.
    B. This has been made even worse as
    • iMovie HD6 - and iMovie'08 to 11 - HAS nothing in common but the name - not a bit of code is related.
    • FinalCut Express and FinalCut Pro was one way compatible from Express to Pro - not back
    • FinalCut is now also disgraced in naming - as FCE/FCP - doesn't have any relation to FinalCut Pro X either.
So this is not as easy as it could have been.
You can in iMovie HD6 - Export out as a full quality QuickTime.mov movie and in FinalCut Express or Pro import it to lay a final touch to it - BUT - all is glued in so no further changes can be made to what's done in iMovie HD e.g. texts and transitions etc.
    BUT !
The tools to color-correct and brightness / contrast adjustments is superior in FinalCut to iMovie where they are but basic. (nearly of no use at all - very very raw)
So this and some other tool's made me take the jump into FinalCut Pro (6.0.4) and I love it. Steep learning curve - but the freedom is fantastic.
Must problem is in the very beginning
    • selecting what kind of project You are doing - e.g. PAL SD-Video 48kHz audio
    • how the material is stored - and setting up the scratch disks (they jump back - so one must keep a very observant eye to this - EVERY time starting-up)
    • but when this is a natural habit to get all sorted out (photos, audio and video where it must be) then the fun really begins.
Good Luck - and have a fantastic time - Key-framing is just one of the wonderful tings You'll find.
    Yours Bengt W
