Final Cut Express on new IMAC

Will the new 17' Imac run Final Cut Express WELL? Or do you really need to go for the Power PC option. Any advice would be great.

I think there may be a little confusion here.
The iMac has always been able to run FCE well. It has plenty of power and is ideal unless you are a professional who needs every last bit of speed.
However, the G5 that came out in November had a different graphics card and required either a free update or the hack mentioned by Jean-Pascal.
The latest Intel powered iMac that was introduced in January can be given the hack to make FCE work but it is likely to be rather slow and unresponsive.
To get the best results from an Intel-iMac you need to wait for the new version of FCE which many expect to appear in the next month or so.
To reiterate - the iMac has more than enough power to run FCE though the addition of another 512MB of RAM is recommended.

  • I installed Final Cut Express in new I-Mac OSX Lion 10.7.2 and it won´t start

I just installed Final Cut Express 4 on a new IMac with OS X 10.7.1 and can´t get it sto launch.

It's an accomplishment that you were even able to install it on Lion (normally it won't even install on Lion).
But as you have already found out, it won't start, and even if it does it is not likely to run properly.  Apple discontinued FCE and do not support it on Lion.  You should get Final Cut Pro X instead.

Does Final Cut Express function on an iMac INTEL Core Duo 2 GHz?

  • Final Cut Express slow on iMac i7

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out with this issue I'm having with FCE.
I just purchased an i7 iMac yesterday in hopes that my FCE would be running much smoother when using HD clips. However that is not the case. There must be something I'm doing wrong. This computer can play 5+ HD movies at the same time no problem. But in Final Cut the playback is very very choppy and slow. I feel like the renders are skipping frames as well.
I transferred all of my files from my Macbook Pro to this iMac, including all of the FCE files. This might have something to do with it?
Also I have done a few google searches, and I have seen people suggesting running FCE from an external HD. Well luckily I'm hooked up to a Mybook Firewire 800 1 TB hard drive. However after dragging all of the final cut express documents and shortcut into the hard drive, the problem still persists.
Do any of you guys have any idea what I should do?
Thank you very much for reading

Okay guys, I just found out something thats weird. The item properties I posted earlier were for one of my lower end HD clips.
This time I tried using one of my biggest clips which was 4 Gigs. I know for a fact that this clip is either 30 fps or 60 fps. The playback in VLC viewer is beautiful. Now the item properties of this video is saying 10 fps as well. Even the clip I posted before has great playback. I'm actually positive these clips are all at least 30fps, but somehow once I drag them into FCE, they become 10fps :/
    with 1280 x 720 resolution
    again h.264
is it possible I have my FCE set up incorrectly? I remember when I installed it, it asked me about choosing a certain format at the beginning. I think I chose the 720p option.
Sasha - Thank you for the insight. Do you know if the video will lose any quality in the process of using MPEG streamclip? Will my video still be in hi-def?
Oops, I just realized that I never mentioned, that I am using .mkv clips, for what it's worth.
Thanks again, you guys have been great, and I hope you can continue to assist me

  • Final Cut Express 2 - new user tutorial

Greetings all! I have had Final Cut Express on my computer for over 2 years and have never learned to use it - sad, but true. I am ready to invest in some kind of tutorial and was seeking your ideas for the best one. I don't live near an Apple store, so I can't take advantage of the things they offer in-store. I would prefer a video tutorial, but if someone thinks there is a book that is better I would consider it. Thanks for any input you can provide.

You say you have FCE 2 so probably the best, easily followed book for you is this one:-

Everything is explained clearly and should you have any further questions, the author is here on the forum to answer them.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 & New iMac

Before I bought the new iMAC I asked if Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0) would work on this computer. I was told yes.
I put the install disc in, and a message of powerpc discs will not work. However, in the folder (on the disc) it says system requirements can be Intel Duel...
Is there something I have to do to get it to recognize the Intel download?
I originally downloaded the application to my PowerPc. That died, which is why I bought the new IMac.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The biggest complaint about FCX is that it isn't FCP. It's all new software with different methods for editing. Takes relearning how to import, organize and edit. Some fine it easy, some find it hard. There's a 30 day trial, so you can find out for yourself. Don't attempt this without training...it's VERY different.
That Apple Employee was wrong, and was just trying to sell you a computer. FCP 6 is 6 years old, and the current OS doesn't take it, nor FCP 7 into consideration as to if they will work at all. SOme people have issues with FCP 7, others don't. But the OS is not designed with FCP 6 in mind...so fair warning.
ANd yes, it takes elbow twisting to get it to even install.

  • Final Cut Studio on new iMac running MacOS 10.8

Several days ago, my beloved MacBook Pro died.
While its portability will be missed, money is tight and the Apple Store's offer of a refurbished new-for-late-2012 iMac was an offer I could not refuse.
    MY NEW HARDWARE:
refurb new-for-2012 iMac, 2.9 GHz Core i5, 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB hard drive, external USB Apple SuperDrive, MacOS 10.8, Apple Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adaptors
    MY VIDEO GEAR
    Canon Vixia HV40 (HDV)
    Canon Digital Rebel T3
    MY VIDEO SOFTWARE
    Apple Final Cut Studio 3
Are there any issues with the new iMac or MacOS 10.8 to be on the lookout for?

Some people have reported issues withthe Tb-FW adaptor in capturing. Lots of posts on the FCPX forum of freezes with the 2 GB GPU. But overall, your iMac should be fast and solid.
    Nice acquisition.

  • Final Cut and the New iMac

Does anyone know how well Final Cut will work on the dual core iMac? I can't afford the Power Mac and I am hoping to hear that the new iMac will run Final just fine. How much extra RAM should I get?
Am I right or just hopeful?
    Chris

I am sure that you know what I mean David and Patrick even though your attitude, should it happen to you, would probably be more sanguine.
I suspect that you, like me, could write a cheque for any amount and never notice it. Many Mac users though are students or otherwise on low budgets and the purchase of a computer is probably their largest expense after a house and car.
When I bought one of my cars three years ago it was due to be "upgraded" in six months and I was given a 25% discount. I realise that cars and computers are completely different but this analogy is as pertinent as Patrick's wheel trims.
The ethical thing to do would be to announce the new model a couple of months before it was due and in the interim sell off the outgoing models with either a 10% discount or something free thrown in as a sweetener.
Apple would have lost a little cash in the short term but the goodwill engendered would have accounted for much higher profits in the future.
Anyway, it's obvious that we hold differing opinions and will never completely agree on this one.

  • Final Cut Express HD & New I Mac CONFLICT - AGP graphics card error??

Not sure what to make of this. I would imagine this should be as seemless as all of the other transitions I have made with apple. I just bought a new I MAC running 10.5.2 and for some reason when I try to load Final Cut XPRESS HD 3.0, it loads just fine but when i try to launch, an error window pops up stating this software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. * AGP GRAPHICS CARD. And then proceeds to NOT launch the program.
Hmmm??? My graphics card is: ATI RADEON HD 2600 PRO. I had the first IMAC 20"(white body) and loaded the same program on that machine. It worked great.
    Thanks for any help.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), I think FCE 3 isn't comaptible with IntelMacs. But you may want to ask in the FCE forum - this is the FCP forum.

  • Dissolves juddery in final cut express 2 - new problem

    Dear All,
I posted on this one a short while ago and got some good hints, but nothing worked. I'm getting rather desperate because nobody seems to be able to help. I don't yet want to spend 120 pounds on a new copy of the software ...
I've been editing a short (5-minute) film in FCE 2. The film is unusual in that it contains no moving images; only stills imported from TIFF files. I've added a voice-over, and a number of dissolves (otherwise the edits are direct cuts). This has been working fine: I add the dissolves and, when I render them, they move as smoothly as required. However, I've now encountered a problem. When I open the application a dialog box appears telling me that two render files are missing. When I search, they can't be found. And (I don't know if the two things are connected) the dissolves are no longer smooth but uneven; the pointer-cursor flickers and there is even flickering in the browser.
Can anyone offer advice? Please! I'd be very grateful - especially as I'm trying to get this piece of work finished before the end of the month.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roger

It sounds as though you suspect something is wrong with FCE.
    Don't buy another one!
Check out the tips on here especially trashing the preferences and deleting the receipts so you can reinstall FCE properly.

  • Reinstalling Final Cut Express on new hard drive?

Hi, my hard drive just recently died on me. So I had to get a new one. I'm in the process now of reinstalling all my programs, but when I try to reinstall FCE, it says the serial code is not valid? What can I do about this? Thanks

    Usually it's an entry error.
Double check the serial info as you enter it.
    Make sure I &1, O & 0 are not confused.
The serial number is mainly triplets of capital letters or numbers.

  • Final Cut Express on new Mac Mini

I have been running FCE on my Mac Mini (bought in 2008) with OS X10.9.5 Mavericks.  When the old Mini went bad, I replaced it with a refurbished Mac Mini Model A1347, Part  No MD387/LL/A., also running Mavericks 10.9.5.  I restored the data from the Time Machine backup.  All my applications and files appeared properly.   When I now open FCE, the program requests my name, organization and Serial Number.  I enter the number from the original materials that came with the software, but the response is "serial number not valid".   What can I do next?

I did find a file in the ProApps folder called "Prodict Registration".    When I tried to open that file, I get the message "You can't open the application 'Product Registration' because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  Could this be the source of the problem?
I don't know. Is the version you are trying to unlock an upgrade from a previous version? Upgrades require two serial numbers, the 1st being the serial number of the full version, and then the Upgrade serial number - although I am not sure if this applies to migrated software.

  • Final Cut Express won't maximize / restore

I have had one of our Final Cut Express machines, new iMac, latest Leopard and QT, refuse to "restore" once hidden. You can do show, etc and nothing happens. The App is active, at least on the doc, but choosing quit would not quit either. Had to option-force quit and relaunch. It seems to be happening about once a day. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions? Things to try?

Delete the User Preferences EXACTLY like this:-

Re: Why don't my arrows on the time line operate and allow me to move to the start and end of the timeline. Iam using the trial version

Check System Preferences. I think Control-1 is used by something in the OS now. Switch it off. It's a major p[ain the way the OS is taking over more and more of the keyboard, allowing less options for application use.
