Final Cut Express Text Generator - Custom Position

Is there a way to customize the position of the lower 3rd text generator? I'm looking to move it lower than its preset position.

Set the position to whatever you want it to be and make it a Favorite Effect.
Select the text effect and in the menu bar: Effects > Make Favorite.
Of course it might go haywire if you then try to use a different typeface or size.

Tom is right, BUT! ...the newest version of Compressor (41.) allows you to do just THAT! ...to export custom sizes.
It's easy. And... once you set it up, you can export DIRECTLY from FCPX, provided you've saved / added this scheme as a "destination" in the FCPX app.

Final Cut Express stopped dragging Text to Cancas

I have just purchases Final Cut Express. At first, I could create Title in Browser and then drag the text to canvas. I tried experimenting with LiveType and it worked but I decided to make titles in Final cut. Now in Final Cut, the text created in Browser cannot be added to Canvas. The video just drags off the Browser but the 6 options on the canvas do not appear and the video remains hidden.
How do I get back to original text operation in Final Cut? I have tried deleting Preferences!

You can't create text in the browser only in the viewer so I'm having trouble following what exactly it is that you're doing.
If the video is dragging off the viewer then you have image+wireframe switched on in the viewer. Do not switch this on. Ever. Switch it off in the view popup at the top of the viewer.

Interface text disappeared in Final Cut Express after upgrade to 10.6

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and now none of the interface text will display in Final Cut Express. (The top menus are OK, but no file or sequence titles, effects names, etc, within Final Cut project windows or the like.)
Immediately after the upgrade I was presented with several "Font Conflict" errors claiming that some fonts had to be moved to the trash because they conflicted with system display fonts, and I said yes. The fonts were Helvetica, HelveticaNeue, and a couple of others.
Any ideas of how I can get text back? Thanks!

I was able to fix this by restoring my ~/Library/Fonts folder from a backup prior to the 10.6 upgrade. After a restart I once again received the following errors:
"There is a conflict with the _______ font file. This font file contains a font name that conflicts with a system font required by Mac OS X to display onscreen text. You should move this font file to the Trash."
The fonts it said were conflicting: Helvetica, HelveticaNeue.dfont, Lucida Grande, and Monaco.
This time I said "Allow Conflict" on all four dialog boxes and launched Final Cut... everything is back to normal!
Not sure what kind of "conflict" it's referring to, but apparently moving these font files to the trash as OS X prompted me to do broke a number of apps.
Should I report this as a bug?

Trouble making the text in scrolling credits (made on Final Cut Express) export clear and not fuzzy

I am having difficulty making the text in the scrolling credits in Final Cut Express clear and not fuzzy. I went under effects, then clicked video generators, then text, then scrolling text to get the scrolling credits working. I tried using the Chroma Keyer effect and the Color Key Effect. These work on captions on video and beginning titles but not the scrolling text. All of those were made on livetype so maybe that is why. I would really appreciate some help. I've been working on this all day. I was on the technical support line for about 40 minutes and they told me there is no more help given over the phone for Final Cut Express and that I should go on here and see if anyone can answer my question. I looked on all the forums and there was nothing on this subject. Thanks.

The software is not doing what it should be doing. We have all had this type of problem. It is nearly always somehow in the way the software is being used. Look at your added Chromakey and color key. You must be doing something that the FCE does not like. Open a new project and new sequence and try the exact same thing. (I use titles from LiveType and from the effects tab and have no problems)

Text for Final Cut Express HD 3.5

I'm hoping that Tom Wolsky will answer this question. I purchased the Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop, second edition and learn a great deal about FCE HD workflow. Now that I've upgraded to 3.5 I'm wondering if there is enough new to this upgrade to warrant purchasing the FCE HD 3.5 book by Tom Wolsky. Thanks.

The main improvements in FCE 3.5 are the Dynamic RT and Keyframing of Effects.
Dynamic RT involves virtually no learning, Keyframing does.
However, many users don't even know what Keyframing is, let alone how to use it.
Are you likely to need it?
I would suggest you hang on to the book you have and if the time comes that you feel it can't cope, then think about getting the new one.
I have used FCE 1.0.1, FCE 3.0 and FCP 5.1 and to be honest, the differences between all three are so marginal that you can hardly tell which one you are using.
Tom and others may think differently.

Downgrading from Final Cut Pro Studio to Final Cut Express

Will Final Cut Express let me use the Boris Title 3D Video Generator effect that I now use in Final Cut Pro Studio?
Does it have an outline text video generator effect?
Since I have DVDSP 4.1.2, will I be able to drag my exported non self-contained quicktime movie into DVDSP? I have read I can use iDVD.
I see from the tutorial (http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/) it does not have the ability to log clips for batch capture later but it does have a project button. Does anyone use that and can share what it does?
I have a Canon DV20 HD camera which I use for DV also. Since I have read that FCE will not read HDV from this camera, has anyone brought DV in using this camera?
Does anyone see any other negatives to downgrading?
I have been using Final Cut Pro from version 1.5 since it did what I needed it to do. Over the years they have added a plethora of packages to it, none of which I use. So why spend 700.00 to upgrade when I can spend 200 to get what I will use?

Yes. Or you can use Compressor, which you should have, to encode your video.

It allows you to log your material first, selecting the pieces on the tape you want to capture and then going back and letting the machine capture the selected pieces.

How do I add a title to a video clip w/ LiveType 2 and Final Cut Express 4

I have Final Cut Express 4 & LiveType 2.1.4, I'm not sure how to add titles or test to a video clip, and the tutorials for Final Cut Express 4 don't say how to get started in LiveType. How do I simply add text? The tutorials say how to add effects to the text they just don't say how to add it to the clip or how to get the clip into LiveType.

Well, you don't actually _add text_ to a video clip, you _create a text clip_ and add that clip to your timeline, either adjacent to an existing clip or on the next higher track if you want to layer the text with an existing video clip.
The very simplest way to add text is to use one of the *text generators* built into FCE. Lower Third, Text, Scrolling Text, etc. allow you to create various text clips and give you basic controls over fonts, positioning, size, color, etc. You can find the text generators in the Effects tab in the FCE Browser.
LiveType is a separate and more sophisticated application that enables you to do all sorts of things with text (much more than can be done with the FCE text generators). The basic process is - create your title in a LiveType project. Save the LiveType project. Then in FCE, import the LiveType project; from there, you can treat it just the same as any other clip.

Double-click the generator clip in the Timeline to load it into the Viewer. In the Duration window, change the duration to whatever you want. Go back to the Timeline and drag the right edge of the clip to fill the duration you entered.
Alternatively you can copy and paste the clip end-to-end to fill the same duration.

Final Cut Express serial number

I have used Final Cut Express for two years. I just upgraded to Leopard. Now when I try to open up Final Cut Express I get a request for info about FCE licensing. They want name etc and serial # of Final Cut Express that is located on front page of original software booklet. I do not seem to have that
book nor the serial number. Computer will not continue on with out that information. I can not open
up Final Cut Express. Appreciate any suggestions.

In encountered a similar problem after the main logic board was replaced in my iMac. I was unable to locate my original serial number. Since I had bought the iMac from Apple with FCE pre-installed, they were able to generate a new serial number for me. I now have that number saved in at least four places...in a text file on the computer...in the manual...on the original disc package...and on the update disc package.

Quick follow up, since I was on my phone earlier and am back to a real keyboard.
To access Easy Setup, hit Control Q.
If you click on the blue discosure triangles, a dropdown menu with about a dozen different presets will be displayed. Select the one you want, (Here, I've selected 720P.)
Whatever you select for a preset will not be applied until you make a new sequence. (I don't like to have sequences with different properties in the same project so I prefer to make a new project if I change the Easy Setup.)
Because photo aspect ratios are different than video, I typically put a solid generator of some compatible color on the first track (v1) and put my photos on the track above (v2). Looks better, IMO, than black bars. There are other creative ways to display them. And of course, you could scale them up to fill the frame…but then you probably would have to re-position them.

Importing itunes into final cut express

I just bought an IMAC with Final Cut Express to do all my video editing of my kids activities. I used Pinnacle Studio on my old PC prior to this but it finally gave out. I downloaded some music CD's I had into itunes and then tried importing the music into FCE. This is not working. I have no problem adding it to my imovies but it will not work with FCE. The music format is m4a which I think is typical.
I went to You Tube and watch several tutorials from some of fellow FC users and still cannot get it to work. There must be something I have to set up in FCE to get this to work but I do not know what that is. I been looking around the program and have not been successful. Any help any of you can provide would be great. Thanks.. Ron

Hi Ron, and welcome to the FCE Forum !
You should convert the audio files to AIFF, 48KHz (aka 16-bit) stereo before importing them into FCE. Neither CDs nor iTunes songs are in that format. You can use iTunes to do the conversion.
With a new Mac and Snow Leopard you probably have iTunes9. Open Preferences, then go to General > Import Settings, then select AIFF and set Custom Settings as 48KHz, 16-bit, stereo. Save the settings. Then in your music library, select the song(s) you want to convert and do Advanced > Create AIFF version. (Note: the format you selected in Import Settings controls what the Advanced > Create menu option does.)

Final Cut Express to Timestamped DVD

I have a Final Cut Express project that is 20 minutes long. There are 140 different clips. Each clip ranges from 5 to 30sec. a piece. I need to export something that all the editors can view on their separate computers w/ chapter markers that have timestamps so they can tell me what/where to edit.
So far we have been doing it from FCE directly, but now that the video for this company is expanding I need to create a better workflow. One that multiple editors can view for instructing editing on videos.
I am a graphic designer working @ a publishing company (we are diving into video blind, not my choice). I've got as far as making over 20 videos for viewing online. Now they have footage from one of they conferences they host and all of them need to view it for editing. Then they can come back and say "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15 etc"... any suggestions?

FCE Timecode Display may display the current timecode at the playhead position, the start and end timecode of the clip, and the reel name. You may enter this name either during capture (reel name plus timecode may uniquely identify a frame in your movie library), or later in the browser while in list view. Unfortunately there is no way to display the clip name.
By using your own example it is not possible to display "clip 3, 00:15:03 - 00:18:04, Clip 5 00:04:03 - 00:15:15" but only something like "00:15:03 - 00:18:04" and "00:04:03 - 00:15:15", etc.
Note however that using the default Type (Absolute Timecode) you might in fact get "02:15:03 - 02:18:04" and "03:04:03 - 03:15:15" if clip 3 starts at absolute 02:00:00 and clip 5 at absolute 03:00:00; in other words you might not need the clip name because the absolute timecode (also named source timecode) uniquely identifies the clip in the movie.
Some warnings.
- Burning many clips in iDVD is not an issue, as long as the whole movie is shorter than 2 hours: not a problem in your case (20 minutes, right ?).
- Instead adding a chapter name to each clip might raise problems: first there is a limit in iDVD I don't recall, but for sure less than 150...; second there is no automatic way to name the chapters: you have to type each name in each chapter marker.
- iDVD does not have a "time window", but if you burn the clips timecode using the filter above you'll be able to read it also in the iDVD preview window.
- Finally, after burning the DVD, you can always read the movie timecode while playing back the movie with DVD Player: just use the various controls made available by the player. This however is the new timecode of the movie, not the absolute/source timecode of the original clips.

Capturing Flip Video to Final Cut Express Will not launch Flip Video

I have done this many times before. I am using Final Cut Express and I am plugging my Flip Video camera into my MacBook Pro and the Flip Video software does not launch. It does not seem to be the
Flip Video software that is the problem. I have upgraded the Flip Video software. The prompt I get says Flip Video quit unexpectely. I have no idea what is going on. I get a huge log of computer terms which I do not understand. Any ideas? Wish I knew more.

The problem is with your Flip Video software. It is launching but then crashing - that's what the message means:
The prompt I get says Flip Video quit unexpectely.
"Quit Unexpectedly" is a nice way to say "Crashed".
You could try trash the Flip Software.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
If that doesn't help you need to contact the makers of the Flip software.
