Final Cut Express training

I bought Diana Weynand's "Final Cut Express 2". I loaded the lessons but when I try to open them I get "unable to open file". I assume this is because current software is the older version(FCE 1) and I need to install FCE 2 software?
Probably a dumb question but please confirm. jv

You should probably skip FCE 2 and go straight to FCE HD when you install a new version. While FCE 1 cannot read the FCE 2 files, FCE HD should be able to read FCE 2 files.

  • Best Final Cut Express Training Program

I'm looking for a good final cut express training program. Preferably a video or maybe a video/book package. Anybody know which ones are the best? Thanks

Many people find one of these books (whichever is appropriate for your version of FCE/FCP) to be the next best thing to personal tuition. The books have lessons with media for them stored on a DVD.
There is also an FCE DVD Tutorial.

  • New user of Final Cut Express - recommendation for book, resource, training

I am a new user of Final Cut Express 4. Actually, I'm a new user of Mac too. I mastered Pinnacle on my PC but got fed up with the glitches, freezing etc.
Could use some advice on a good BEGINNER resource.
    Anyone???

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since FCE has a relatively steep learning curve, I would recommend getting one of two training books:
    1. [Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop|http://www.amazon.com/Final-Cut-Express-Editing-Workshop/dp/0240810775 /ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240436986&sr=8-2] by Tom Wolsky. This is how I learned the program and I can assure you that it is a comprehensive guide with everything from basic to more advanced techniques. I highly recommend it. Tom is a frequent contributor to this forum, so if you had any questions about a lesson then he'd be here to help you out.
    2. [Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express 4|http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Final-Express/dp/0321534670/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240437118&sr=8-4] by Diana Weynand. Though I can't vouch for it personally, I have heard from many people who were pleased with their experience learning from this book, and I'm sure it is quite good also.
There are also several good sites I've visited with free tutorials that you might like to check out:

    Hope that helps,

  • Need Training for Final Cut Express 4

I need additional training to figure out Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any advise for me? Thanks

You may recognise the name of the author of this one

    He posts here occasionally.
If you want video tutorials check out http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modListing.asp?pid=250
Remember, that while v4 has significant improvements and advances, the basics are much the same so even tutorials for v2 or v3 will still be helpful.

  • Final Cut Express Tutorials

Before buying Final Cut Express I want to know how to use the program to see If it is worth it. I looked at it at the apple store and I was totally lost. Is there any free overlook at this application or any free tutorials. iMovie is fine for me until I want to use more than one camera angle and add cool titles, animations, and transitions.
    Thanks

There is not nearly as much FCE learning material out there as there is for FCP. That being said, most of the the FCP relates directly to anything you will do in FCE and if you are just interested in the "look and feel" of non-linear editing at this level, anything Final Cut will probably help out.
Personally, while I was trying to get a handle on FCE I found the following resources invaluable:
    Ken Stone's Final Cut Pro website has hundreds of free tutorials on all aspects of digital video;
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fcp_homepageindex.html
    For a few dollars a month Lynda.com does about a good a job as anyone in explaining FCE. At least give the sample tutorials a look, they are free;
    http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=371
    While not all of us learn well from books, there are a few out there that by themselves or in concert with each other can answer most questions and guide a novice along. I have used all of these and can recommend same;
Final Cut Express For Dummies by Helmut Kobler
Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop, Third Edition by Tom Wolsky
Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express HD by Diana Weynand
    A couple of commercial houses that create training for FCE have websites offering free tutorials that can give you a feel for non-linear editing;
DV Creators have some free tutorials as well as offering "Final Cut Express Foundations" for $50.
    http://dvcreators.net/
Ripple Training offers some on-line tutorials for FCE as well as FCP that are well worth taking a look at.
    http://www.rippletraining.com/
Despite all of the above I would suggest that FCE is not for everyone. There is a certain investment in time, energy and some money to use this program, but for those willing to make the investment it can generate some very rewarding results.

  • Best way to RTFM on Final Cut Express HD 3.5?

Is anyone aware of a good book on Final Cut Express HD that's been updated for version 3.5? I need to upgrade as I'm switching to Intel, and I'm looking for something written for someone experienced in NLE (but not specifically FCE) that will include mention of the newest additions.
Powermac G5 (soon to be Mac Pro)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

imho the single biggest additions in 3.5 are that effects can now be keyframed + in-canvas motion keyframes.
Tom Wolsky's book is still the best thing out there to get started, don't be put off that it was written for FCE2, there isn't all that much different w/r/t basic functions & editing in FCE3 or 3.5. Tom has also recently announced a training DVD for FCE-HD; and at some point I trust he will publish material about keyframing in v3.5.
You might also want to take a look at the articles on Ken Stone's website - they are very helpful & thought provoking.

  • Final Cut Express won't open on my MBP

I have a new Macbook Pro 17 in. I loaded Final Cut Express HD which runs fine on my G4 tower and Powerbook G4.
When I try to open it I get a message saying:
    Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing.
    AGP card.
    What is going on?
Do I need to get a newer version of FCE HD?

Well I know that the Apple Pro Training Series FCE book is really good. I don't have it. I own the Apple Pro Training Series for Final Cut Pro and it's amazing and have learned a lot from it.
Inside FCE DVD - those are always pretty good.
Apple Pro Training Series: FCE HD - same author as my Final Cut Pro book.
Googling is your friend. You can find a lot.
I know that Inside FCE is really good and the company that makes those DVds have good training DVDs.
    Best of Luck.

  • How do I render in Final Cut Express?

I installed Final Cut Express 4 yesterday.  I cannot render anything! When I try to render it says "Warning: Insufficient disk space for render. Please free up space and retry."  I have deleted preferences and it still will not render.  I have also made room by deleting files but it still will not work! What do I do?

    Hi
There are some major differences in how video-editing programs works.
Just to Start and get on with FinalCut is one of them. It doesn't store and keep material as iMovie any version.
So a book on howto can be of Great Value - I used

  • Final Cut Express problems galore

It's hard to know where to start with regard to problems relating to Final Cut Express. How about this: the 3 simple steps for importing a project into FCE from iMovie, as set forth in the 'getting started' book, result in nothing more than a message telling me that the File is of the wrong type. And that's that. Not much to go on there. Any suggestions? Most of the other problems with 'getting started' - and there are quite a few - have resulted in masses of 'rendering' issues, complete with hundreds of numerals, decimal points, and acronyms which are entirely meaningless to me. Having spent years on iMovie 06 generating lots of highly edited movies, and enjoying every minutes, I gotta say that FCE is somewhat beyond daunting. Is there, perhaps, a book out there that would be useful to the likes of me? Something that begins: 1. Sit down at computer. 2. Turn computer on. 3. Launch Final Cut Express, and so on?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
FCE is a totally different animal compared to iMovie. It does have a steep learning curve, but there are good resources available and good people here to help you learn it. Once you have the basics down, it gets a lot easier. Here's what I'd recommend for learning FCE:
Tom Wolsky's Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop book and Final Cut Express Made Easy training DVD
Izzy Video's Learn Final Cut Express 4 videos (online, free)

  • Final Cut Express 2 vs. 4

I'm a Final Cut Pro user who has been asked to train a colleague on Final Cut Express 4.
I'm not all that up on Express.
I have a copy of FCExpress 2, and he has FCExpress 4.
Are there HUGE differences between the interface and features of FCExpress 2 and 4?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks much Tom.
I see that the motion keyframing interface is different than Final Cut Pro.
Can you place key frames on images and pictures and scale them up and down
within the same clip? I don't see a keyframe button?

never felt comfortable with FC/e, but using the new UserInterface for about 4 years (yes, it's 4y ago when iMovie switched from a to b with iM08) made it a 'snap' to instantly use FCPX without reading a line of manual.
    Until .... -
No, the basics are self-explanatory.- for rhe rest, study manual and all avail.  training videos.
Just to make it crystal clear:
FCPX is NO upgrade to the FC-line of products!
It is a new product, new interface, new attitude, new everything!
.... and it works like magic in conjunction with Motion5 ...
btw: if you have any plug-ins for FC/e => no use with FCPX!

  • Does anyone know good free internet tutorials for final cut express 4?

ok, so i finally have my final cut express 4, it seems very intimidating and i get sacred just looking at the program! i need 2 things, online FREE tutorials, other than the ones apple offers, and a good stock footage website that is also free... HELP!!!
    Message was edited by: James31

There are dozens of free tutorials on the web, both written and in video format.
Ripple Training has about 50 video tutorials which you can download free of charge;-
    http://www.rippletraining.com/freetutorials_final_cutexpress.html
HOWEVER they are useless for beginners because all the available tutorials tend to be on interesting BUT RANDOM SUBJECTS which I believe is something you DO NOT WANT ?
I think you are probably looking for something that will take you in an orderly and logical fashion from installing FCE and setting up your camera so you can capture the footage, through all the basic processes of editing, explaining them clearly and unambiguously.
If that is the case, you cannot do better than to get one of the books suggested by Michel and written by Tom Wolsky.
It will not only enable you to master the basics quickly and easily but will take you up to a high standard of film-making competency.
    Ian.

  • Number of Licenses on Final Cut Express

I was wondering how many licenses Final Cut Express HD has? My friend and I have high school production company and we were looking into buying it.

Ok I was expecting that response. Do you know what Inside Final Cut Express 2 is? Here is the Link

Is it an old version of Final Cut Express or is it just a DVD that trains you on FCE?

  • Final Cut Express Tutorial

After doing iMovie for 4 years I think it is about time I try my hand at Final Cut Express (since I've had it for 4 years and done nothing with it). I was looking tonight to buy a tutorial program because I am overwhelmed.
Can anyone suggest a great tutorial that is out there to purchase to help ease me into FCE?
    Kindly, Beth

I, too, have made numerous movies with iMovie and I always feel as though I am really pushing iMovie beyond what it is designed for. So, I finally upgraded.
I loved "Final Cut Pro 5 Hands-On Training" by Larry David. Still do, actually. I checked it out from my local library. I really like his style of step-by-step tutorials, sharing his prefered techniques, and his wry sense of humor.
Sure, it's Final Cut Pro, but I found surprisingly little information that was unique to FCP and such info was easy to identify. E.g. I skipped the chapter on multi-camera perspectives.
Whatever book you choose, try it from a library first, if possible. And if it doesn't make movie editing in FCE fun for you, it is probably the wrong book for you.

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?
