Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

I just ran the software updated for tiger 10.4.11. Now my final cut express won't open and run. The error report says:
Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000008
Does this look like a file or folder permissions issue? Where can I get info on software update rollback? Thanks in advance, very frustrating.

Thanks for the tip BGreg but no joy. I repaired disk permissions, installed combo update 10.4.11, repaired disk permissions but FCE still won't run. Same error report as before. Any suggestions appreciated:

Final Cut Express Won't Open

My computer won't open Final Cut Express. I can click on it, and go through the beginning of the program opening, and then without an error message, the program just closes.
Any ideas?

Same exact thing with me today on a Dual G5. FCE won't open. Stops after five seconds. No messages.
I believe it has to do with setting scratch disks and resulting incomplete pathways to scratch disks. But I don't know how to fix it. When I removed a designated scratch disc, FCE opened. But when I reset a scratch disk, a box opened asking to verify a pathway, but the box had nothing in it. I clicked on "continue" and FCE simply closed again.

Final Cut Express won't transfer widescreen to iDVD!

I edited a movie in Final Cut Express, and it plays fine in widescreen in that program. When I export it as a Quicktime, however, it then will only play in 4:3 ratio. I import it to iDVD & it wont play in widescreen either.
(Also... when in Final Cut Exp, how to I change the aspect ratios from anamorphic to 4:3 & vice versa. Just for future reference & to make sure everything is right.)

Yer post has been here a couple days, so I'll take a whack. While researching a similar but different problem (tacked on at the end), I have come upon repeated references to this solution for importing Final Cut anamorphic files into iDVD. They all reference back to Apple support article 75079. Despite the long list of instructions, it only amounts to changing one setting.
First and foremost, you need Quicktime Pro for this to work, because you open the file in QT and then save it with a minor change. You fit the bill because your files are "squished" in QT. If they weren't, then even attempting this would be pointless.
Open the file in QT Pro
Choose "Window>Show Movie Properties"
In the Property window, click the "Video track" in the "Name" column
Click the "Visual Settings" Button
Deselect the "Preserve Aspect Ration" checkbox
Change the "Scaled Size" (NTSC=853 x 480, PAL=1024 x 576)
You will see the immediate change in the QT window.
Choose "File>Save" to save the movie.
If I recall, this saves it as a .mov file. If that's what you started with, then read no further.
If you started with a .dv file and are partial to retaining a .dv file, this other technique I ran across may work just as well:
Open the file in QT Pro
Choose "File>Export"
In the "Export" drop-down menu, choose "Movie to DV Stream"
Click the "Options" button
In the "DV Export Settings" window change the aspect ratio to 16:9
Might want to double-check the audio setting to be sure it is what you want it to be.
(The file I tried this on had no audio and was defaulted to 32)
Click "Okay"
Change the name if you are nervous
Save the file.
This second method was actually to address a problem when 16:9 QT files import to iMovie as 4:3. For all I know, it won't work on files exported from Final Cut, but I figured I'd toss it in.
As for switching aspect ratios in FC, in my research I have run across references to it just being a button-click.
My own problem has to do with importing (into iDVD) 16:9 QT files saved from iMovie 6. Unlike your Final Cut files that play 4:3 in QT, these guys play 16:9 just fine in QT, so neither of the above techniques changes anything. So far, I have only found a reference to two 3-party programs ("mydvdedit" and "anamorphicizer") as solutions.
Naturally, sharing iMovie->iDVD maintains 16:9 in iDVD, but if I ever get stupid and move to iMovie 08, I understand iMovie no longer shares with iDVD, so then what? I'm just hoping there is some other solution than yet another 3-party program to make an Apple product work right.

Final Cut Express Won't Open - Help!

Hi, I had been using Final Cut Express successfully for the past six months... until ast week, when I (too hastily) deleted the contents of the Final Cut Express Documents folder to clear up space. Since then, FCE won't start. After I click on the application icon, the program seems to start up for few seconds, but then it crashes.
I have tried to reinstall FCE by deleting all of the files (following instructions I found online), but the same problem occurs.
Anyone have ideas? Any help would be great appreciated. I need FCE back!

Final Cut Express won't capture audio with the video anymore, why?

I have used Final Cut Express 4 for over a year now with no problems, but recently I am unable to capture any audio with the video from my camera. I can do it through iMovie no problem. I can't figure out if I changed a setting by accident because everything looks normal to me. Could another program be interfering with this? Quicktime Pro? I have no idea how to fix this.

First of all, we need a bunch of information in order to help. Please provide the specs of the footage and the sequence you are using. Also, are you using DV, HDV, or AVCHD? Do you hear audio when the clip is played in the viewer, or is there no audio at all once the clip is captured/ingested?

Final Cut Express won't open on my MBP

I have a new Macbook Pro 17 in. I loaded Final Cut Express HD which runs fine on my G4 tower and Powerbook G4.
When I try to open it I get a message saying:
Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing.
AGP card.
What is going on?
Do I need to get a newer version of FCE HD?

Well I know that the Apple Pro Training Series FCE book is really good. I don't have it. I own the Apple Pro Training Series for Final Cut Pro and it's amazing and have learned a lot from it.
Inside FCE DVD - those are always pretty good.

Googling is your friend. You can find a lot.
I know that Inside FCE is really good and the company that makes those DVds have good training DVDs.

Final Cut Express won't maximize / restore

I have had one of our Final Cut Express machines, new iMac, latest Leopard and QT, refuse to "restore" once hidden. You can do show, etc and nothing happens. The App is active, at least on the doc, but choosing quit would not quit either. Had to option-force quit and relaunch. It seems to be happening about once a day. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions? Things to try?

Does Final Cut 7 support direct importing of MTS files from an HD Camera

I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and have been importing MTS files from my Camera's Hard Drive to my Mac through the Log and Transfer feature. However, during the upload it converts the files to .MOV. The resulting .MOV files are much larger than the original MTS files. I am interested in learning if the latest Final Cut Studio with Final Cut Pro 7 allows for a direct import of MTS files as well as editing this native format without the need to convert to a .MOV?
Also, I have many MTS files that are now MT2S originally imported onto my old PC that are now stored on Data Discs. Is there any way possible to bring those MT2S files onto my Mac and edit in their native format or will I need to convert them through some third party software to have them editable on by Final Cut Pro?

You can, if you want to jump through some hoops, edit your native AVCHD footage in Final Cut (there is no direct import option but you can capture it into Toast, export that as an .mp4 and bring that into Final Cut Pro.) That being said, it is a very bad idea plus its clunky and slow.
Long story short: Use Log and Transfer and get a big hard drive.

My laptop Final Cut Studio won't allow me access.

I have a fully licensed Final Cut Studio including an upgrade for a few years now. It's installed on my PC and Laptop. This morning for some reason the version on my laptop is asking for a serial number before allowing me access. But even when I enter it it rejects it as invalid! How do I access it?

are you sure you're entering the correct serial number and entering it correctly?
Is this an upgrade or a full install? If an upgrade, it may be looking for the original serial number rather than the upgrade number.
If I remember correctly (and I may not be) the serial numbers are in groups of three and each group is either numbers or letters not a mix.
Also, you might want to do the normal troubleshooting steps like repairing permissions, running disk repair on all drives (particularly your startup drive which you'll have to do after booting from your os install disk or another bootable drive), run diskwarrior (if you have it) on your startup drive and deleting fcp preferences

Final Cut Express won't launch consistently

I am in a school, in a local account. Out of 15 Macs I can get FCE to launch on about 7 of them. The settings are identical as are the machines.
1G RAM, 10.5.8 iMac
I have repaired permissions, updated all software, reinstalled twice and still it is hit or miss. What other areas can I look at to help these launch for our students?

I do not see specs specific to FCE. What name would associate with it? (That sounds as wrong to me as it does to you :)) Do I need to find each users pref rather than going in as admin? I am grabbing at any straws, as you can see.

Final Cut Express-Capturing footage off of mini dv with no timecode

For some reason my canon xm1 isn't showing timecode from the mini dv. I've already played footage from the same mini dv off of another mini dv deck and it did show timecode. Now Final Cut Express won't allow me to play clips in because it has no reference. Is there a way around this?

I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min) the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.
