Final Cut Freezes up

I got the computer but not the brains, can some one help? When I log and capture footage Final Cut Pro freezes up but no other program is effected, I have to force quit to get out. This problem happened out of nowhere, I had log and capture set to uncontrollable device to ignore time code. I have a 500 gig external hard drive everything else is stock, I installed FCP as part of the Final Cut Studio pack, I had been instructed to throw away the preferences/restart even re-enstalled FCP but I still have the same problem can some one please help? Thank you very much

Thanks for your help, I'm using a firewire and my cheap video camera as the source to play the mini dv from, it's not the same camera I used to shoot the footage. all I have been doing is bring up log and capture, make sure it's set to non-controllable device press play on the camera then capture now on log and capture. I haven't had any problems with it before, the only difference is the make of video tape but even trying to down load previously loaded tapes has the same problem, thanks again, any advice? is it a computer problem not a FCP problem?

  • Final Cut Freezing Constantly: Pinwheels of Death!

    Hey all,
I am editing a project in Final Cut 7.0.3, and about every 5-10 minutes I have to stop editing for 1-3 minutes while the pinwheel of death spins 'round and 'round.  The problem is specific to my Mac computer.... when I edit the project on a Macbook laptop, the project works fine, despite the fact that this Mac is immensely more powerful than the Macbook.
I've searched multiple on-line forums, and have already tried the following:
    (1)  Rebooted Final Cut Pro
    (2)  Rebooted the whole computer
    (3)  Rebooted the whole computer in safe mode (holding down the Shift key)
    (4)  Trashed my preferences
    (5)  Repaired disk permissions, verified disks, etc. (in Disk Utility)
    (5)  Checked to make sure I wasn't editing in some silly format like h.264
    (7)  Broke my larger sequence into many more tiny sequences of about five minutes each (and man, it takes forever to edit this way, and doesn't help that much).
Not sure if it's of any help, but here's some additional info:
    The computer's processor is 2x3.2 GHZ Quat-Core Intel Xeon, memory is 8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-Dimm.
I'm editing EX-1 footage, and my Easy Setup looks like this:
My sequence settings look like this, which works brilliantly with my footage (no render bars--green, red, or otherwise):
Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much in advance.

    Hey there, David,
My media is stored on an external hard drive: a 2.0 TB Lacie drive, which is 1.9 TB full.  My guess is that you'll tell me that this hard drive is too full and I should put media onto an emptier drive.  This external hard drive is mirrored identically onto another hard drive of the same make and model.  I use this mirrored drive (also 1.9 TB out of 2.0 full) with my Macbook laptop--same media, same project--and it works totally fine.
Oddly enough, my Mac boots off of a different eternal hard drive.  Due to problems with the internal drive, the system drive is now a 500 GB Lacie external hard drive; it is used nearly exclusively for booting the system, so only 50 GB are in use.  The hard drive is connected with a firewire 800, the fastest connection the hard drive allows.  Is it possible that booting the system off an external is bogging the system down?
One final addition to this stockpile of notes is that a professional editor recently stopped by to help me with other Final Cut problems, and he felt strongly that we change our presets to XDCAM EX.  Before then, I was using the preset Apple ProRes 422, as shown in the image below.  XDCAM EX is compatible with the camera's footage I was using, which seems like a cleaner set-up: no green render bars, etc.  However, I wasn't having any of these pinwheel problems before we changed the settings.  Is it possible that editing with XDCAM EX as a sequence setting is somehow overwhelming Final Cut?  I'm not doing anything too intense--I'm happy to edit in a lower resolution now, and render it out later, so long as this will not effect getting the highest possible resolution in the end.

  • Final Cut Freeze

So I have a little video where my friend throws a grenade at me and it blows me up. I have an effect, I have scorch mark i have a sound and the bloom transition(to give it a nice ecplode feel). When I go to play it back it freezes before all of that then does the explosion but misses the transition and the beggining of the explosion and the video looks bad. Any help? Thx

    A couple of things,
    1. when you brought the clips in did you select Optimize - i.e. transcode it to ProRes
    2. did you let the change be fully rendered .. i.e. are there any orange bars at the top of the clips ?
    3. What drive is the event / media stored on .. is it fast and is it a fast connection ?
    Jim

  • Final Cut Freezing and giving error messages

FCPX is slow and unresponsive and when I drag clips into a project I sometimes get a message that the project cannot be saved, but mostly I get what you see below. Before you ask, it's not full, it is available, nothing has moved or changed. Any thoughts? this comes up constantly.

  • New Macbook Pro, Final Cut Freezing

I have a fast new macbook pro, and when i press play on my timeline in fc, i get the rainbow ball. If i wait a while it unfreezes but it's unbearable. My last slower macbook pro didn't have this problem. What do I do?

Try moving things off the internal drive to FW. When you say you got a new MacBook Pro, I assume you mean NEW new without Card slot, if you got a new older refreshed model that has a slot, get a express card to hook up eSata drives. Even if you get past the stalls now, it wil mmake you happier later.

  • Final cut to Motion Freezes

I'm trying to send a clip to Motion, but every time I try to send something, I get the color wheel, and Final Cut freezes. The clip is only 6 seconds long, and Final cut used to send things without a problem. Anybody have any advice?

Would be helpful to know what format your clip is (remember that formats like H.264, Mpeg4 etc are delivery not editing formats) and if you have tried things like [trashing preferences|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] or creating a new project and import the clip in the newly created project.
If you need to keep going as an alternative you may export your 6 seconds as QT movie (not conversion) self-contained, which will not affect quality and import that in Motion.

  • Video freezes in Final Cut Pro

Anyone else out there have the periodic issue I've had with video I'm editing simply freezing after a certain period of time (10- 60 minutes) in the timeline. The audio will continue to play, but the video just stutters or completely freezes. Quitting Final Cut and then reopening the project helps for a little while, before it eventually does it all over again.
    Any ideas?
    Ray

I'm having the same issue. Using MAC Pro with OS X processor 2 x 2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intex Xeon with 12 GB or memory 1066 MHz DDR3 that I bought seven months ago. Have been editing with DVCAM using a DSR 45 deck with 4pin DV to 9pin 800 for six of those months. Everything is going to a XSAN. I have moved large amounts of data from the XSAN to the local drive and sent it back with no loss or errors. We have to fibre switches between the XSAN and the MAC's. No problem there either. No errors. I have used a DSR 380 camera to ingest and that works for a while. I have changed cables twice and that didn't work. This didn't happen until a month ago. Any help?

  • Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 freezes on output to VHS and other weridness!!!

    Gents and Ladies,
First time poster...I feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside...really I do...
My Brand New G5 dual 2.7GHz blah blah blah is freezing up on out put to VHS. I am using a JVC SR-VS30 Mini-DV/SVHS dual deck.
Why VHS? I work for a school district and that's the cheapest stock possible.
Anyway... the board meeting tape I output last night all the sudden freezes after like 45 minutes of recording. It litterally screwed up right after I left the office last night. I actually stayed with it for 45 minutes and "held its hand" to make sure everything went along alright. Right after it left..."feeeze frame, freeze frame...now freeze..du du du na na na"...did you ever hear that song?
Anyway...to make a long story short...while watching the tape this morning...it was just stuck for like an hour like that. I turned it off after 30 seconds but after fast fwd'n the tape...it just kept recording like that.
Totally unbelieveable. I love how Macs need to rest before it starts to work. It grabs a cup of Joe and a bagel...reads the morning paper...returns a few emails...then it MIGHT be ready to work...if your lucky. And then...if your not looking...it'll randomly fail. I love that...so..what I do...is I try to trick it into working for me...yeah...I trick it...:)
Anyway...so I want to run Disk Warrior. My screen saver is turned off, my hard drives don't go to sleep, all the things you might think would cause it to go off line over the course of 3 hours... I have turned off. It would seem...at least to me...that when it tries to Auto Save the glitch kicks in.
The other thing is that I record the meetings on an NNovia Quick Capture HD DVR via Firewire. It has worked many times before...flawlessly. The copy is fine...the file in Final Cut is fine. It even previews to a TV monitor nicely...but on output...its choking on the toothpaste when rinsing.
    JB
G5 Dual 2.7ghz H2o cooled   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Double dipping on RAM

    O.K. cool.
I did change Auto Save before any of this even happens. I made all these very changes on my previous dual 2.0 G5. That machine...although much slower...always worked...never faultered...very dependable. Quite honestly the best Mac I ever worked on...until new versions of stuff came out and ruined all my fun.
I have changed all the pertinant settings...at least I thought.
Do any of you think I should ask for the upgrade to 5.0? Does it have any fixes in it that make it worth it? The new machine is what has made the bugs pop up. For a while it wasn't even recognizing my deck then one day it started working. Any thoughts on that... let me know. I am not a huge fan of the Dual JVC deck but it has worked pretty well. Now I use this DVR and it works really well for long running board meetings. At least VHS does what its told...:) With DV you always got to wonder if you've dropped some frames. Even if I am recording to a Hard Drive.
Before this gig I worked on the "last run" dual something G4 Quicksilver's and they all ran horrible. FCP3 and bugs everywhere. After that disaster I then jumped ship all together to a Canopus Premiere Pro system on a DVStorm2 Pro + card. That is a nice system. Great Chroma Key stuff. Now at this gig I have been working in Mac again. I was hugely surprised by how well the G5 performed. It did get a little slow for me eventually. Honestly my single P4 in combonation with the Canopus Realtime Preview Board really beat it up quite badly. Even that still had to render in the end but at least I could see everything while I was working. Render time was pretty fast in the end too. I think that has been my favorite DV Editing solution on PC.
I really like Final Cut Pro. I think it quick and dirty...just the way I like it. I started out learning on Avid and if the company I worked for used it...I would prefer that truthfully but I have been riding FCP for 3 years and counting and every place I work at is Mac so...I am totally on this boat.
Any opinions on the Intel stuff yet? I would be interested in perf as I would like to get a Mac system at home and sell my Canopus rig...all thought I do love it so.
    BTW...no...no error messages at all...
...and I would've styaed with it last night if I didn't have to finally leave after another 10 hour day...tonight I have a 2 hour video after work and then Sat/Sun we have a huge music festival and that will 2 12hr days...so...if I didn't need sleep...I would'e been able to stay some more...
    ;)~
...Oh and I have a 250 GB Serial ATA system drive and a 250 GB A/V Storage drive.
    FCP stuff on A/V Drive
    iMovie/iDVD stuff on system
...has always seemed to run better like this.
Many thanks for the ideas and for any future input.

  • HT5958 We are 4 min in to editing a video on final cut pro.  now my computer is freezing up.  I have heard that this is a glitch from downloading. (beyond frustrated)  is this from working from 2 external hard drives?  PLEASE HELP! =)

    PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1.  everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up.  I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us.  they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!)  We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo.  8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions)  Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????

Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though.

  • Final Cut Pro Freezing

When I open Final Cut Pro, it opens fine. I check out sequences for about 30 mins without any issues. Then I edit something in one sequence. I am able to do my editing just fine. But then I get a message that the project is loading. I thought that the project had already loaded by now. What is worse is that after my edit, Final Cut Pro freezes entirely. Even after waiting another 30 mins, the project still appears to be loading. I have to force quit Final Cut Pro and restart it to be able to do anything. On the next load the same thing happens again. I am running the latest version of Final Cut Pro (just downloaded the Blu-Ray fix which fixes an issue I had before. I have to ruin numerous discs with projects being written on them only partially) on a Mac Pro late 2013. I am wondering what the issue is and how it can be fixed. As is, I cannot be very productive with Final Cut Pro.

I've no idea what is causing your problem but you should try the general troubleshooting strategies below if you have not already done so.
You also need to check that your hard drive is not more than 80% full and ideally you should be using an external hard drive.
Incidentally you can't be still using OS X 10.5.8 ?
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
             http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2.  With FCP X shutdown, hold down option key and select Go>Library>Application Support>Final Cut Pro  .  .  .  trash the Layouts Folder.
      3. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
      4. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.
          http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
      5. If these 4 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System    Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Final Cut Express (4.0.1) keeps on freezing (not responding) when i import files (pics). Have force quit 3 times already. Also rebooted Mac. Any help please?

Frustrating experience with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 today. Started a new project. Imports pics, but every now and then FCE freezes and I have to force quite. Any advice please. Thanks

CMYK is a colour system used by specialized publishing businesses so unless you have got your pictures directly from one of these sources they are unlikely to be CMYK.
If the pictures have been produced by you they are likely to be the normal RGB.
To check, ctrl click on an original picture and in the Get Info window check the colour specs.
As you can see this one is RGB.

  • Final Cut Pro X freezing when I stack transitions?

I'm trying to place transitions on images that are stacked in my timeline, however every time I try to put a transition on the 5th image, final cut refuses to render the small transition and freezes. I've restarted the computer, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Final Cut, but nothing seems to work.
One thing that fixes the issue is if I'm quick enough to delete the transition before it freezes, the problems stops and I can use Final Cut normally, but the second I try to place the transition, it freezes up again.
I'm on a 2012 iMac 27" with the basic specs. Many videos have been edited on this without any issues so I know it can handle what I'm attempting to do, especially as I've done it many times before.
Is there anyway to resolve the issue? And it seems to be with the transition "scale" at the beginning of the image seen below. I placed "Cross Dissolve" on all of the images at the beginning and end; they all rendered properly and could use final cut without any issues
(There's a video as the base/main file on the timeline, then images that are stacked over the video file. There is cross dissolve at the end of each image and scale transition at the beginning of each image)
