Final Cut Not Importing

I'm trying to import footage from a Canon GL2 and I can see my footage in the log and capture window, but whenever I try to batch capture or capture now, it says cannot import because it can't read timecode. I've tried different tapes and they don't work either. What could be the problem?

You can search for GL2 here on the forum, lots of unending threads that may or may not help you.
Meantime, try using the uncontrollable FW device preset and use Capture Now, one clip at a time. You won't get timecode but you can sort that out later.

way Final Cut not support mpeg4 format ?

If you mean "why" then you will need to go to Apple corporation and speak with the product developer team.  If you would like to know how to convert, I found it easiest using Flip Player (deluxe version), about $49 today.  Takes about 10 minutes to convert a 400 MB clip for example.  Then load the converted file to your editing source folder.

  • Motion 5 to Final Cut 7 Import Problems

    Hello!
I am driving myself nuts with a project mixing Motion 5 with Final Cut Pro 7. I am using 1920 x 1080p settings in both programs with 23.98 frame rate settings in both. When I export from Motion (as either an image sequence or a self-contained MOV file) and bring the finished piece back into Final Cut Pro 7... the footage refuses to line up. The timing is off, and it appears that the scaling is off as well.
I've checked Distortion on both clips, scaling, Speed settings... everything I can think of. Tried cutting & pasting to new sequences. If I line it up to match at the beginning of the clip it's off by a few frames in. If I line it up for the end the same thing happens. Either way it's 128 frames long... what's going on here?
On top of that, if I take the footage from Final Cut, export it, pull it into Motion, do NOTHING to it, and render it back out to a file and import that into Final Cut Pro 7... it is significantly darker.
    Any ideas??

QT 7 shows two frame rates: the actual frame rate (FPS) and the frame rate you're getting while it is playing back the video (Playback FPS) -- that will tend to be variable especially if QT has to work really hard to play the file.
    Anyway...
Watch your canvas (and/or export) render settings in Motion (and probably FCP, as well). Normal is not Best (duh). Normal in Motion 5 is okay for FCPX effects, they'll be rendered in FCPX anyway and I think that FCPX always treats it as Best, but for exporting video, I'll always set it to Best (higher quality image resampling; antialiased intersections and particle edges; and probably most importantly: sharper text). You can set the render settings when you Export by going to the Render tab in the export dialog and setting the Render Quality to Best. If you're exporting from Motion (any version) *for* FCP (again, any version) your export settings should be some flavor of ProRes. [Unless there is a lot of very high motion in your video - OR - you require transparency, ProRes LT is almost always acceptable to use, especially if you need to save disc space.] The *default* export from Motion 5 is ProRes 4444 (this is the only variant that supports transparency). Even though this is the Highest quality ProRes, it is not the same as the render quality settings in Motion since those determine how well (and precisely) the animation in Motion is rendered to whatever file format you choose. ProRes is the "native" format for FCP, period.
In FCP, your render settings might be for lower resolutions while playing back (unlimited RT, etc...) When you get these resolution variations going for playback, nothing is guaranteed to line up. So, when you import your Motion export [ ], render everything in the FCP timeline and see how they line up. Chances are everything will be perfect. (PS - this phenomenon can also occur in FCPX until everything is rendered especially if proxy media is being used.)
... um ... there is this one thing, though, that just came to mind. Under certain conditions (you'll need to check with somebody else about this, I was never really sure what the deal was) , you might actually be getting something like 1888 x 1062 resolution from your project... that *might* cause some alignment issues.  It seems to me that there was a "difference" between some of the "Broadcast" 1080 HD settings and the actual 1920 x 1080 HD option... (but I can't  remember specifically, and it doesn't seem to be an issue in FCPX. It could be worth checking into if you continue to have alignment problems.)
[PPS: "Self-contained MOV" doesn't really tell us anything. MOV is just a "wrapper" and the format could be anything from Animation to XDCAM. "Image Sequence" is also ambiguous since there's a huge difference between JPG and similar formats that don't support transparency and are "lossy"; and PNG and other formats that do support transparency and are "lossless". In video, it's always best to go with the least lossy options... ]

  • Annoyed with JVC/Final Cut Pro import problem; will they ever fix this?

Annoyed with Final Cut Pro JVC import problem; will they ever fix this?
I've shot footage on JVC GY-HD111E in the UK in 720p/25p PAL mode.
I'm trying to import lots of short clips (average 10 seconds) into Final Cut Pro (latest version with 720p/25p support) with a new Mac Pro maxed out with ram and 3 extra internal HDs.
Problem is, on a scene-break i.e. pause/stop, Final Cut detects this and creates a new clip, but it takes about 5 seconds to 'searching for media" before it starts the new clip. Because some clips are only very short, this 5 second delay sometimes means I only get the final few frames of a clip, rather than the entire 5 seconds or so of it.
JVC UK are blaming Apple and are saying it is up to them to fix it as Premiere and Edius does not have this problem.
However, Symbiosis in the UK (who do HD-Connect box) say that the JVC ProHD cameras do not wrap the shots up properly at the end, they are kind of left open and this creates problems on scene-breaks.
I've tried turning off the "create new clip on timecode break" etc, but it does not make any difference, when I do this it simply quits capturing on a scene break. Besides I have about 300 cutaways like this and I don't want to spend the rest of the year breaking them up on the timeline as this would be a futile and long workflow.
I'm importing and working on a native HDV 720p/25p timeline and this is the way I want to work. I've already imported and edited 4 hours of footage, but these 4 hours were easy as all 4 tapes had no start/stop points, they were recorded continuously from beginning to end of tape for 64 minutes each time so importing was no problem; 1 clip per tape.
But now I've come to my 5 tapes containing hundreds of cutaways I'm kind of screwed and need some advise on how I can import them natively in HDV without losing this 5 seconds off the beginning of each clip whilst FCP searches for the media each time.
I've been told this issue is definately with FCP, any ideas how I can get around this?

I haven't heard of this JVC/FCP problem, so I can't comment on it. However, whoever shot the cutaways didn't do you, the editor, any favors.
I've been doing video since 1984, and I've got to say, anyone who shoots a scene that is only 5 or 6 seconds long on tape is making a huge mistake, and it's been that way since the beginning of computerized editing in the late 70s.
Shoot at least 5 seconds of pre-roll before the shot begins, then roll tape for at least 5 seconds after you've got the shot. That's the protocol I've followed for 22 years now. Tape is cheap, edit suite time isn't.
But laying down only 5 to 6 seconds for a scene is wrong, IMO.

  • Final Cut not recognizing transparency

For some reason all of a sudden Final Cut stopped recognizing transparency in images I import. It doesn't matter if they are PNG, TIF or PSD they all import with either a white or a black background.
Here is the strange thing: if I import the same image into LiveType it shows up with the transparency as it should.
    Any suggestions?

If you double-click a Photoshop image in the Browser, it should open in the timeline, just like a sequence.
Drag the Clip (not the sequence) back from the Timeline to your Browser, double-click it to open it in the Viewer, then add it to your Timeline as normal.

  • Final Cut - not so - Pro!!! comments?

First and foremost I need to express my emotional reaction to the Final Cut Pro X debacle. I find what Apple has done to be absolutely shameful and dishonest.  You can not mislead professional users like this.  Its just wrong. Its more damaging for the entire brand more than just FCP.  Their marketing strategy of late has become one of an untrustworthy company.  For all of us Pro users who have forever sworn by Apple, defended its honor, stood by and defended Final Cut even though Adobe Premiere was - and now set in stone - actually IS technically a superior NLE. We have been robbed, disrespected and dishonored.
    Now down to business.
If there is any request that should be made it should be for Apple to take the Pro out of Final Cut.  Its no longer valid and is now actually a blatant lie.  I feel sorry for the many post facilities, tv stations, schools and production company that will now have to literally reinvent the wheel in terms of current workflows. What do you think apple feels about how much these people have to suffer - by releasing this software - obviously nothing.  I just read a feed about a poor bloke who was trying to find out whether his facility will need to switch to Avid as they cannot seem to find any answers as to whether there is any MC Color or MC Transport support for FCP X, sadly enough as well as this release is going he will most probably end up going with the Grey and Purple Vomit.  The ridiculous and vastly premature decision of Apple's to release this so called Pro NLE is especially apparent in the fact that there is no Pro I/O? Therefore it is no longer Pro, Apple! Its the most basic function of an NLE - How do I know whether my fields are right or wrong? How do I know my reds aren't bleeding? I don't. More importantly with this software I can't know. Thus one cannot use this software professionally. Next.  As great as Final Cut X is, I don't think its going to do a better job at coloring my project than a Davinci nor a Baselight and shame we'll give the crusty Lustre some credit too. Nor can it process audio better than Protools or Nuendo. Nor conforming film projects than say a Smoke or Flame. So what makes them think that Final Cut shouldn't need to communicate with the other apps? My problem is that people are talking about it as if its okay that its going to be an upgrade in an update.  That is unaccpetable. A key function you have always had in legacy version is not something you take away in your new version. Especially as key a function as OMF/EDL/XML import/export.  Its ridonkulous. The ichat theatre THEY introduced in the previous version? I can post to Facebook and Youtube though.  Maybe I'll just ask the broadcaster that I still need to deliver TAPE to that they can get there program of my facebook page!!!  I don't mind getting used to the GUI.  I remember when I started on AE it was version 5.  You look at CS5.5 now, its basically not even the same thing in terms of the GUI.  So as for the GUI - They can do whatever they want as long as its functional. But I am certain the maybe more senior editors may not agree.  When I downloaded the FCPX I also got the Ripple training videos.  Fantastic technological and functional advancements and to see it in action was amazing. A rolling shutter plugin from The Foundry for AE will cost £500 and Final cut will do a fairly decent job of sorting it out for you and thats included in the $299.  The auto stabilisation DURING import - pretty good.  Now for me the hum dinger is the sync tool.  That is for nothing where as with Pluraleyes you pay $149 which is half the price of FCPX.  So there are pluses, a lot of pluses. Unfortunately more so for my guitar-ing nephew who may want to make a music video with his mates at school and publish it to Facebook and Youtube. Not so much for the lets say 13part 26min ENG entertainment show you may need to pump out an episode a week and deliver on TAPE!!!
Personally, I say functionality - whoah!!!! Pro use - ***? Would never use this app on an actual job... never... not in a million years in its current condition.
By the way, Avid must be rolling on the floor laughing about this. I know I would -  This software as a professional application is a joke.

yes but the more people who say it the more Apple gets it that it needs a BETTER FCPX.

  • Final Cut .mov import error

I have been trying to figure out why in the world final cut generates an unknown error when I'm trying to import a quicktime .mov file. Any ideas?

Same problem with this kind of .mov files :
    GoPro AVC encoder, 1280 x 720, Millions
    AAC,Stéréo (G D), 48,000 Khz
    29,97 fps
Does it mean I have to convert my files with Mpeg Streamclip? GoPro encoder is not supported in FCE 4?

  • Final Cut Pro Import File...

I am working with an .mpg file given to me by the client. The file (in quicktime) plays with audio. But when I import the same file into final cut, the audio is not there. I don't know what is going on. Help?

I had the same problem. To solve I just exported an AVI from Quicktime. Then when I imported the AVI file in FCP and the audio was present. May not be the best solution but worked for me.

  • Does Final Cut Pro import 24 fps video?

    Hi,
I've been working with Final Cut Express for about a year, and am thinking about upgrading. I know that Final Cut Express does not import true 24 fps video, but am wondering if Final Cut Pro does. Also, does Final Cut Pro require more hardware power than FCE? (I currently have a dual core MacBook Pro with 4 gigs of ram. Will that suffice for FCP?)
    Thanks,
    Vic

Yes, FCP can handle 24 (or, more commonly, 23.98), and no, it doesn't require additional hardware (though certain apps inside the suite will certainly benefit from it).

  • Final Cut X import issue with .fcpxml files

I am trying import an .fcpxml file into my Final Cut X, but am receiving the following error: "The document "File Name.fcpxml" could not be opened. Inavlid argument."
My editor created these .fcpxml files on a different computer, but none of the source files were changed or moved.
I greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

here is a link to the first video files i exported. the quality of one of them was pixelated, it was pro res 422 but with h26 encoding . the other was something I can't remember.
as for the type of format of the picture I am filming, it is also a screen shot that gives you the info on the format of the film clip.

  • Final Cut Not responding after computer is in Sleep Mode

I put my computer to sleep for a few hours when I go away on a shoot. When I come back and wake the computer, final cut gives me the spinning wheel of death and is not responding. What is even more annoying is when I go to force quit the program, it doesn't quit from the task bar and the dot under the icon of final cut is still lit. Even after trying 10 force quits it still stays active. I am forced to shutdown my computer everytime and this problem happens everytime the computer goes to sleep and is woken up.
Is there a fix to this?

    Which version of FCP?
    Are you on a network?
How many drives are in your Mac?
And, if there is more than one drive, are you absolutely certain you placed your registration information on the correct drive?
The usual explanation is that FCP is trying to locate or verify the serial number (different behaviors in different versions). The drive where that info is stored is inaccessible (because the drive is not spinning and so is the same as not mounted) to FCP (which is loaded into RAM) and totally active.

  • Final Cut Not Recognizing Camera/Devices Connected Via FireWire

I have a Macbook and a Macbook Pro and I'm having the exact same issue with both of them. I'm trying to capture DV footage into Final Cut Pro 5 via a Sony Digital Video Cassette Recorder GV-D1000 NTSC, I've also tried capturing into iMovie with the firewire device not being recognized there either.
Device control is "FireWire NTSC Basic" and Capture/Input is "DV NTSC 48 khz" I've captured footage plenty of times and never had a problem until now. I've tried just about every audio/video setting there is including anamorphic as I saw suggested in a similar thread and nothing has changed. I've also tried different firewire cables, different devices including canon/sony and a panasonic cameras. When I connect a new device it shows "vtr ok" for a few seconds and then switches to "no communication". I've tried trashing my preferences and repairing permissions. I've updated quicktime/restarted the macs/unplugged the devices etc. I've also tried playing the tape on the sony box first and then opening FCP and attempting to capture, the footage stops playing and I get an error message that "video is not available". I'm capturing to a 500gb external harddrive that I've used before with no problems and is connected via usb. At one point it did allow me to start the capture now process, but it kept dropping a million frames and aborting, now it won't even let me get that far. I'm literally pulling my hair out, can some one PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME??!!?

Exactly what version of QT are you running now?...and FCP5.?
Have you tried the Guiness solution yet?..shut everything down and unplug, wait 15 minutes, plug all back in, then turn on camera/deck first.
Confirm that System Profiler recognizes the camera/deck and the deck is set in VTR mode (not camera mode), then open FCP.
Could be a bad FW port (have you tried other ports on the mac?)
    Or, could be QT incompatibility...

  • MAC and FINAL CUT NOT RECOGNIZING SONY V1U Camera

The new Sony V1U camera (out this year) is not being recognized by my iMAC computer (this years latest model) and nor by the FINAL CUT PRO HD 5.1 ...Any suggestions?
I already called Mac/ Final Cut - they had the other models (Sony A1U and Z1U)listed as compatible with FC, but the V1U wasn't listed - I'm thinking since it's brand new, it's just not listed yet. We tried at Samy's camera to get it to work with their MAC/ FC but no go, and I tried different fire wire cable- wasn't the problem either. ANy help is appreciated - Do I need a Sony Driver or will I just have no luck hooking up the camera?

Just got the new HVR-V1U and it worked correctly out of the box with FCP 5.1.2 and iMovie HD on a Mac G5 Quad. IMovie saw the camera correctly right away as HD and captured that way; I set FCP to HDV 1080i60 and it captured correctly.
The camera setting for IN/OUT REC are:
    REC FORMAT: HDV 1080i
COMPONENT: 1080i/480i (it auto switches depending on what's on tape)
    i.LINK CONV: OFF
DOWN CONVERT: SQUEEZE (nothing happens since iLink convert is off anyway).
Note that the camera does NOT capture in Quicktime "New Movie Recording" unless I put it into DV mode or downconvert mode, but in any of those DV modes, the picture is squeezed regardless of my "squeeze, letterbox, or crop" selections.
The V1U will also capture to FCP and iMovie while just in camera mode: no tape recording, but just whatever the camera is looking at. Sounds like tapeless recording is possible, though there must be a tape in the machine. I haven't tried the HDMI through a BlackMagic Intensity (because I don't have one, and it doesn't work yet with G5's in any case), so I can't comment on the cameras raw performance. Camcorderinfo.com has a detailed review of the FX7 which has similar, if not identical video properties in the default modes.
I did some quicky video recording tests in HDV and captured them on FCP as HDV, then as camera downconverted DV (anamorphic). I then used compressor to convert each of those streams to mpeg2 (4.5 avg, 7.5 max) and the HDV to mpeg2 direct is slightly better, especially in vertical red bleed.
My only grip so far is that Sony did not include a regular mini-stereo microphone plug in, but only the XLR pair. For serious video work, you probably do want to use XLR mics; but it sure would be nice to be able to just plug in my cheapy Sony ECM-MSD1 to do casual recording in stereo instead of recording only mono with the included mic. Oh, well, we can't have everything, can we.

  • Final Cut Pro: Imported music files too large?

I've imported a 10 min and 20 sec .aif audio file that is 104.2 MB currently in Final Cut. Does this seem like a correct file size? Is there any way to make the file smaller? Here's the other specs for the file:
    data rate: 172.3k/sec
    Aud rate: 44.1 KHz
    Audio Format: 16-bit integer
I have other files of similar size for example a 6:43 music file that is 67.8 MB.

I have exported a 3min video in HDef and it is 1GB! I don't understand why this is so large.
you suggest file format to be AIFF; how do i export in this format and where do I change the sample rate to 48k? thanks.

  • QT file from final cut not working on other macs

    Hi,
Sorry to anyone who's seen this question under a different category, but I have to do a presentation tomorrow and I'm freaking out that this doesn't work, I wasn't quite sure what program's fault it was.
I have a .mov file that was encoded from Final Cut (version 5.1.4) (h.264) on a mac pro running Tiger and QT version 7.5.5 and is a .mov file
I am trying to play it on a G4 PowerBook running 10.3.9, QT version 7.4 and it wont play the movie, it keeps dropping frames and generally playing very shakily and sometimes crashing, I tried it on a G4 I-Mac (with the same specs) too, and its the same problem. Therefore I can only presume that it must be something to do with the OS, or the QT version or something else entirely maybe.
Thanks loads to anyone who can help
