Final Cut on iMac

I am about to purchase a new computer for my home office, and I have a few questions concerning the system I should purchase and how I should set it up. I currently have a Power Mac G5 with the following hardware:
Model Name: Power Mac G5
Model Identifier: PowerMac7,2
Processor Name: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 7 GB
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.4f0
Serial Number (system): XB40206SNVB
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-000A95BAA97C
I mainly use my computer to edit on Final Cut Pro and Motion. I’m running Final Cut 5.1.5 and Motion 2.1.2. I want to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2/Funal Cut 7 and Motion 4, but as you know, Mac Final Cut software will not update on my Power Mac, forcing me to upgrade my whole system in order to move forward. I’ve spent a lot of money on my system and love Mac, but this is just rotten. Mac should support their long-term fans, not force them out.
I can’t afford a new Mac Pro, but from what I hear, iMac may be an alternative.
Question 1:
Would a Quad-Core i7 iMac out perform my current system?
Question 2:
I believe I should set up my system with all software on the computer drive and use an external Fire Wire 800 drive for my main media storage, rendering and video capture.
Is this true?
Question 3:
If I used a Fire Wire hub to connect to multiple Fire Wire sources, would the one Fire Wire port support video capture from a DV cam in, and digitizing to the Fire Wire 800 drive at the same time through the same Fire Wire hub?
I mostly capture video at work and export to a QuickTime file to work on projects at home. Will the speed of the external Fire Wire 800 drive be fast enough, or would I need to set up Ethernet raid somehow?
Question 4:
How would I set up an external 16 x 9 monitor for playback for my video projects in Final Cut?
Currently I have a digital to analog converter connected to a 4x3 NTSC monitor.
I now need to see DV NTSC 16 x 9 SD playback on a 16 x 9 monitor. Would this be connected through the Mini Display Port, or some other connectivity? I need this reference to check for interlacing issues, color and video quality.
Question 5:
Does Apple give long-term Mac users some kind of break on hardware or software now that we need to spend enormous amounts of money upgrading our hardware to keep our Mac software updated?
Question 6:
Even though I can’t afford a Mac Pro, will I kick myself for getting an iMac now and not wait and save up and purchasing a Mac Pro in the future?

but my digital to analog connects via firewire and I want to use the one firewire port for external video drive
Well, you can still see about connecting a camera/deck to the external drive via firewire and see if you can get smooth playback. You might with DV.
How about a Matrox MXO2 mini? Will that work with an iMac?
Nope. The ONLY option you have with an iMac is the Matrox MXO...the original. That connects via DVI out, but then gets you component, composite, s-video and SDI. No HDMI, but since this is DV, you don't need that. The MXO2 Mini won't work as it needs a PCIe slot, something an iMac lacks. A MacPro has these. OR it also uses Express34, that a MacBook Pro has (well, only the 17" model).
With the iMac, your options are limited. Because this is a consumer machine. Fine for cutting and all that, but professional monitoring? That makes things difficult.

  • Final Cut Express + iMac G5 w/ iSight

    Hey everyone.
Would Final Cut Express v.2 work on an iMac G5 with iSight. I know that certain versions of Final Cut Pro won't because of the video card incompatibility, but is it the same with Express?
Please get back with any responses you feel helpful.
    Jason

    Hi Jason.
Your Mac has a PCI card instead of an AGP one which FCE is designed to use.
There is a workaround for G5 Macs with PCI cards and also Intel-Macs that some people have been able to use.
There is no danger to your computer because you are not altering anything other than 3 letters in part of the FCE code. There is also no risk to FCE because even if the worst should happen, the most you would have to do would be to re-install it:-
    1. Right click on the FCE icon and select "Show Package Contents".
    2. Open the "Contents" folder and double click the "info .plist". It should open automatically in TextEdit - if it doesn't, choose TextEdit manually.
    3. Around 15 or so lines down you will see AGP. Delete it and put in PCI.
    4. Close the window and when asked if you want to save the changes, say yes.
You should then be able to open FCE and use it normally. (On Intel-Macs it may well work slowly).

  • Seeing External Video in Final Cut  on iMac

I'm planning to buy an iMac for an off-line editing system, but I need to see my Final Cut project's external video. I don't want to go through the Firewire port (I need that for my Firewire 800 external media drive), so I'm planning to purchase a Matrox MXO2 mini. I'm going to use the mini display port, using a HDMI adaptor to hook up to the Matrox MXO2 mini and hook that to a 1080p monitor. Does this make sense? Will this work, or is there a better way, without spending lots of money?

But isn't it comforting to go to a place secure in the knowledge that nothing's changed?
Here, let me make you feel at home. I know squat about Color, never even cracked the Ripple Tutorial, but I have a client who wants me to color correct a project, and they don't want me to use the 3-way CC, which I do know something about, so Zeb would you please spoon feed me all I need to know about the Color application, so that I can earn money that otherwise might have gone to you.
Now, don't you feel at home, isn't that comforting?

  • Final Cut and IMac

What hardware setup will best allow me to run Final Cut Studio apps on an IMac?

You don't have a lot of choices in terms of hardware in an iMac that would make much difference. The primary choices will be RAM - I'd probably recommend a minimum of 1GB, and 2GB would be better - and hard drive - the more space you have, the better. Getting the 2GHz processor will offer some improvement in performance, but it probably won't be a big difference. The 256MB option in the graphics processor might be worthwhile for Motion, though I don't think it will make much if any difference for FCP or DVD Studio Pro.
And of course you'll want to be running Final Cut Studio 5.1; earlier versions are not Intel-native.
But ultimately, if you really want high performance with Final Cut Studio, you'll want a Mac Pro.

  • "command-z" and "option-command-z" does nothing in Final Cut Pro 5

My iMac is new and I have Final Cut Pro 5 installed. Cannot get "command-z" to undo anything in final cut and "option-command-z" will not open an audio file in wave format. Do these functions just not work in Final Cut?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

opt-cmd-z is "trim with edit selection audio"
After checking the keyboard settings in System Prefs on my MAC I don't see a universal UNDO command in there. It seems that cmd-z is just a common keyboard shortcut used in most apps. (Although Shake doesn't like it very much...) lilrad should check the Tools menu-Keyboard Layouts-Customize, and then click on the cmd and opt icons on the digital keyboard and see what icon it shows. If it is not set, there ya go. If you don't recognize the icon, try going to a command in the side button list (to the right of thte keyboard in this window) and click on a command that does not already have a shortcut. Type the cmd-z, or opt-cmd-z, (after unlocking the keyboard at the bottom left) and it will give you a warning as to what this keystroke is already set for.
There should not be any MAC override, but if there is that would be in the system settings window under keyboard and mouse, keyboard shortcuts. Scroll down and see if someone has set a master cmd-z shortcut. If so, get rid of it. It should be an undo command for all apps. (But that's just me, I could be wrong...)

  • Final Cut pro software

Is the Final cut Pro software for Intel based Mac out yet?
    When will it be?

No. It is expected to be relased by the end of March, though no one can say for certain. When it arrives, it will be released as Final Cut Studio, and will include Final Cut Pro 5, Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, and DVD Studio Pro. You can read more about it here:

  • Imovvie won't send project to Final Cut X

I am having difficulty sending my project to from latest version of Imovie to latest version Final Cut X. Imac 27 late 2009 running on Mavericks also fully updated (march 2 2014). I have several libraries on three different firewire discs. All libraries are created from upgrading from older versions.
When I run the same thing on my MacPro (no external drives) everthing runs fine.
Any ideas on what to do??

Strange.  (they are not trailers are they - it doesn't work with trailers).
It works for me with projects on external firewire drives.  When you say  "In Imovie it looks like the file is created"  What do you see?
When I have sent projects to FCP nothing visibly happens in iMovie 10.  I presume that FCP reads the existing iMovie project file.  In fact I think it deosn't even copy the media but simply hard-links the existing media.
    Geoff.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • Imac won't let me install Final cut studio 2..it will let me install the upgrade, but it has no live type and i need it to work on my current projects. How do I get Live type back installed in iMac

I just purchased an iMac for home and went to install final cut studio 2 and it gave me an error saying something about "PowerPC" not used or something like that. Installed the studio upgrade just fine...but it has no "Live Type" which I need to work on projects I have been using in my Mac Pro at my work place. How do I get "Live Type" to install in this iMac? Downloaded Live Type upgrade but that won't update cause there's no "Live Type" in the applications.

It sounds like you have Lion installed on your new imac, although your profile says SL 10.6.8 (you may want to change this.)
If you have the Snow Leopard install disc I believe you can install "Rosetta" from the extras folder which will then, if you have the original FCS2 discs , allow you to select and install Live Type and LIve Type content only from the custom install options.
I hope this will work for you.

  • Final cut studio 2 on new imac 24'' 2.8 GHz

    Hi,
I am, in the near future, starting wedding videography and my idea is to purchase Final Cut Studio 2 and the new imac 24" 2.8GHz with 4gb RAM and the 1TB hard drive.
My question is this, will this computer be powerful enough for me to run the Final Cut Studio "smoothly" while editing HD quality video?
My business will be based on this so i want to be sure!!!
    Thanks in advance!

I am, in the near future, < </div>
How do you communicate with us then?
Do not start your business based on a computer and a piece of software. Research the business first, then decide what you will need and then figure out a way to finance it. When you get down to starting your event photography business, the computer is going to be the smallest captial investment you make; do not scrimp on it.
The iMac will only satisfy your needs for a few months but it will do the job. You must also have printers, scanners, backup routines and external drives. Umm, insurance.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 on iMac to be purchased

I am a first-time computer buyer, so I'm trying to make sure this purchase is going to be worth it. I'm looking to purchase the iMac off the shelf, but I'm uncertain if I need extra accessories to make Final Cut Studio 2 run. The Mac says it has "ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Graphics processor with 256 MV of GDDR3 memory," and the software requirements say it needs, "An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)." Will I be required to buy a separate graphics card, or will the computer support it as is? If I need additional hardware, what specifically do I need?

I can offer a different perspective about a MAC for video editing. I used to believe that a Tower MAC was the only option for various video formats but since the landscape for current video cameras have changed, I now rely almost exclusively on a MacBook Pro.
The MBP has several advantages for attaching various adapters for competent video chores. The Express 34 slot can access two 7200 rpm SATA drives that can be RAID 0 and the MBP has Firewire 400-800 and USB 2.0 connections.
Since I use a P2 camera, I have capability of using FW connection to download clips or use a Express 34 (PCMCIA-EXP34) adapter for P2 capture. If you are using a DV camera you can capture from Firewire and capture to either FW 800 drive or the eSATA drives. You could even connect an MX0/MX02 to the Firewire for color correction.
Finally, you can utiize a 23" or even a 30" Cinema Display thru the DVI port as the current MBP's have great video cards.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 & New iMac

Before I bought the new iMAC I asked if Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0) would work on this computer. I was told yes.
I put the install disc in, and a message of powerpc discs will not work. However, in the folder (on the disc) it says system requirements can be Intel Duel...
Is there something I have to do to get it to recognize the Intel download?
I originally downloaded the application to my PowerPc. That died, which is why I bought the new IMac.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The biggest complaint about FCX is that it isn't FCP. It's all new software with different methods for editing. Takes relearning how to import, organize and edit. Some fine it easy, some find it hard. There's a 30 day trial, so you can find out for yourself. Don't attempt this without training...it's VERY different.
That Apple Employee was wrong, and was just trying to sell you a computer. FCP 6 is 6 years old, and the current OS doesn't take it, nor FCP 7 into consideration as to if they will work at all. SOme people have issues with FCP 7, others don't. But the OS is not designed with FCP 6 in mind...so fair warning.
ANd yes, it takes elbow twisting to get it to even install.
