Final Cut only detects my HD camera as a DV-PAL basic???

Hi, I'm currently waiting for a director to come to my suite, so we can begin editing a film. This is the first time I'll be using HD footage on my suite, so I've hired a Sony Z1E HDV camera for the digitizing. I'm just trying to get everything ready for when she gets here and am testing the camera with mini DV footage I've shot on an SD camera before.
Everything seems fine but problem at the moment is, Final Cut only seems to detect the camera when I go to Easy Setup > DV-PAL Firewire Basic, it doesn't detect it when I use Easy Setup > HD > HDV - 1080i50.
Is this simply because I'm using an SD tape or do I need to worry?
If someone could give me the Easy setup settings and camera settings for this to digitize correctly, I'd be very greatful.
Thank you.
Alex

Is this simply because I'm using an SD tape....?
Yes.

    Hi Cereskit
Thanks again for the message. I've done the updates and have the App Store on my desktop. I went into it and searched for imovie but couldn't find the basic imovie, which I presume is what I'd need for editing?, rather than imovie 11 for £10.49, which is for making trailers, it seems. Also, were you saying that imovie would be free?

  • Using a camera without fireware, final cut don't detec the camera,

    hellooo!!
    I use this camera:
    http://www.trustedreviews.com/camcorders/review/2007/09/15/Sony-HDR-SR8E-Camcord er/p1
And it only have the `possibility to use USB to pass.
Only iMovie 8 detect the camera but:
my camera films to 4:3 (I want the PAL)
Imovie 8 only have the option to import camera contains in:
    "Importar video como: Grande - 960 x 540
    Maximo - 1920 x 1080"
    ¿Can I unload to iMovie in measures the PAL 720 x 576?
Because I want 4:3 PAL 720 x 576. I unload the material from the camera to iMovie and then to Final Cut Express but if I unload to imovie with 960 x 540 there are the measures of 16:9 and I want 4:3 and then I want pass it to final cut express.
Because final cut express either detect the camera with USB..
    well.. thank you very much

If you only have USB 2.0 you will have to copy the video files from your camera to the desktop or some other convenient place.
They will be in the wrong format for FCE so you will have to convert them to DV with MPEG Streamclip:-

If your camera shoots AVCHD you can use FCE 4 to capture it.

  • MAC and FINAL CUT NOT RECOGNIZING SONY V1U Camera

The new Sony V1U camera (out this year) is not being recognized by my iMAC computer (this years latest model) and nor by the FINAL CUT PRO HD 5.1 ...Any suggestions?
I already called Mac/ Final Cut - they had the other models (Sony A1U and Z1U)listed as compatible with FC, but the V1U wasn't listed - I'm thinking since it's brand new, it's just not listed yet. We tried at Samy's camera to get it to work with their MAC/ FC but no go, and I tried different fire wire cable- wasn't the problem either. ANy help is appreciated - Do I need a Sony Driver or will I just have no luck hooking up the camera?

Just got the new HVR-V1U and it worked correctly out of the box with FCP 5.1.2 and iMovie HD on a Mac G5 Quad. IMovie saw the camera correctly right away as HD and captured that way; I set FCP to HDV 1080i60 and it captured correctly.
The camera setting for IN/OUT REC are:
    REC FORMAT: HDV 1080i
COMPONENT: 1080i/480i (it auto switches depending on what's on tape)
    i.LINK CONV: OFF
DOWN CONVERT: SQUEEZE (nothing happens since iLink convert is off anyway).
Note that the camera does NOT capture in Quicktime "New Movie Recording" unless I put it into DV mode or downconvert mode, but in any of those DV modes, the picture is squeezed regardless of my "squeeze, letterbox, or crop" selections.
The V1U will also capture to FCP and iMovie while just in camera mode: no tape recording, but just whatever the camera is looking at. Sounds like tapeless recording is possible, though there must be a tape in the machine. I haven't tried the HDMI through a BlackMagic Intensity (because I don't have one, and it doesn't work yet with G5's in any case), so I can't comment on the cameras raw performance. Camcorderinfo.com has a detailed review of the FX7 which has similar, if not identical video properties in the default modes.
I did some quicky video recording tests in HDV and captured them on FCP as HDV, then as camera downconverted DV (anamorphic). I then used compressor to convert each of those streams to mpeg2 (4.5 avg, 7.5 max) and the HDV to mpeg2 direct is slightly better, especially in vertical red bleed.
My only grip so far is that Sony did not include a regular mini-stereo microphone plug in, but only the XLR pair. For serious video work, you probably do want to use XLR mics; but it sure would be nice to be able to just plug in my cheapy Sony ECM-MSD1 to do casual recording in stereo instead of recording only mono with the included mic. Oh, well, we can't have everything, can we.

  • IMovie captures fine, Final Cut cannot detect firewire?!

    Hi,
I am running the latest Mac OSX 10.4. My iMovie is able to capture fine from my Sony Z1, but when using Final Cut Pro 5, it will not even detect the camera is there.
I have updated to Final Cut Studio 2, and still have the same problem. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

so many having problems with HDV and Z1, in recent times 1 thread out of 8or 10 is about HDV related issues. Use the search forum for more info.
You may need to capture with iMovie, convert the m2t stream (MPEG streamclip) in an editable format and then use FCP.

  • Final Cut Pro X and JVC camera

Can anyone who saw the April preview of Final Cut Pro X tell me if it will contain the necessary codec for my JVC GY - HM100U camera? Many thanks.

    finnur,
I am interested in using this camera for a documentary shoot this fall.
most of the info I have read online has been from your posts here & it sounds like you love the camera.
Do you shoot in the XDCAM QT codec or using mp4? sounds like it works pretty well with FCP?
do you transcode to prores before editing?
Is there anything else I should know about the camera before i make the plunge?
    THANKS!

  • Exporting in Final Cut only saves first 20 seconds...Project due in 2 days.

    Hello all.
Working in Final Cut Pro here, And this problem has arisen: I finished editing my 10 minute final project for school. I set my in and out points for the sequence. Nothing is selected, I go to Export > Quicktime Movie. So far so good. I change the "keep current settings" to "DV-NTSC 48khz". I'm making this move self contained because I'm going to be authoring in DVDSP on a different machine. I name it and save it and it saves almost instantly. When I go to play it, it is only the first 20 seconds. HELP PLEASE! This is Dude in 2 days!!

Also, it's possible you have a file export size limit set in your preferences. Confirm that there's no limit on file export size. You might also try deleting your preferences. Also, have you tried exporting to a different drive.

  • Final Cut 5 and HDV-HCR camera

I have a new sony HDV-HCR camera and final cut pro 5. My tapes that have been recorded in HDV will log and caputure on my computer but the tapes that are recorded in DV will no show on my computer. I can work the camera but when I log and capture I always get the preview disabled on my screen. It says the VTR is ok and I have changed the camera settings to DV and use the dv ntsc settings on Final cut pro. HELP

Andres - welcome to the discussions - rendering is usually required when a clip's settings (resolution/codec/framerate/etc...) doesn't match the settings in the timeline. Using Easy Setup for your project's particulars and creating a new sequence is the often the best way to start out.
To check your clip's settings, ctrl-click on it in the browser and select Properties/Format... - to check your sequence, do the same or select Settings... and check there.

  • Final cut won't recognize my camera

Hello. My Final Cut HD 3.0 won't recognize my brand new Sony 1080i HDV camera. I realize my final cut software probably pre-dates the camera. How can I fix it so I can capture video from this camera? I'm sure there's an answer buried someplace right before my eyes-- but I don't see it. Thanks.

  • Final Cut HD and Flash Memory Cameras

I picked up a Canon FS20 today (just like the FS10, FS100, FS200, etc). I have yet to open it.
I want to buy a flash memory camera that has footage go straight from the camera's memory card to FCP - no additional conversion steps.
Is this possible? If so, which cameras am I looking at?
I have tops $500 to spend, but would rather float around 3-400.
I have FCP 5, and would rather not upgrade yet.

    Greetings, other Nick.
Listen, if you buy a tape based camera, it will take at least as long as however many minutes you shot.
If you buy a flash card based camera it usually records in mpeg 2 or mpeg 4. Both formats need to be converted to some format that you can edit with. This will take some time. Use the opportunity to do something else. Like not sit in front of the computer.
What version 5 of FCP do you have - 5.0.x or 5.1.x?
If its the former, time to upgrade. 5.0 is not compatible with your Intel Mac.

  • Problems with Log& capture AVCHD files in Final cut 7.0.3

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to log and capture a hole file of AVCDH (with several clips in it) in Final cut 7.0.3.
When I open the file final cut only detects have of the clips, the others are with duration: 0 and no content.
The first ones are succesfully transfered.
    Can anyone help me?
The files were recorded in AVCHD 1080p 50.
    Thanks.
    Raquel

That's why you can't convert...you are converting the supported frame rates.
yes, EditReady is TONS better. They are always on top of the latest AVCHD formats (every camera uses a different variant of AVCHD).  It used to be that they had two apps...EditReady for QT formats and  ClipWrap2 for AVCHD...but they have now rolled all of those features into EditReady...one app for everything. They have a free demo so you can try it and see for yourself.

Filming on a Panisonic 24p camera but I imported it into final cut with a Sony HD camera. Will this mess up the quality of of my shots when I ad slow motion? I have noticed that the slow mo is a little chopy. PLEASE HELP!....

24p is captured with your standard "DV-NTSC" easy setup, whereas 24pA is captured with the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown" easy setup. Correct me if I'm wrong I still have yet to work in 24pA.
