Final Cut or iLife?

I need some advice. I currently have FCE and iLife 5 and wish to upgrade one of them. I'm interested in iLife 6 becase the Apple site says I can now burn directly to a third party DVD with iLife O6. Is it worth it for me to upgrade to FCE HD (which means upgrading to 10.4) or should I stick with iLife 06?

"..copy it quickly to DVD as an archive.."
Er, there's a difference between copying video footage to a DVD in its original form, as an 'archive', ready for importing & editing afterwards (..but why would you do that, instead of keeping the tape as an 'archive'?..) and burning the video footage as a playable DVD ..which converts it to MPEG-2 format, thereby reducing the quality a bit when you want to later convert it back into editable DV format.
iDVD 6 can automatically make a "Magic DVD" (..just copying the footage to a DVD and automatically adding a menu, etc..) and "..has built-in support for a wide variety of DVD media formats — including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL.." so you can also burn higher-capacity dual-layer discs using a suitable burner. And it lets you make 16:9 'widescreen' DVDs, too.
Sounds like you just want to dump footage to a DVD to be able to hand some video around the family: iDVD is ideal for that. FCE HD is really for editing. You seem to want easy distribution. So you probably need iLife '06.

  • How can I transfer iLife and Final cut from my iMac to my Macbook Pro?

I have Final Cut and iLife on my iMac and just bought a Macbook Pro and I want to transfer it to my Macbook now.  Do I need the disc?  Can I do it without the disc and if so how?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Respecting to iLife, your MacBook should come with iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand preinstalled, so you don't have to transfer iLife from your iMac unless you need iWeb or iDVD.
Respecting to Final Cut, it depends on the version you have. If you have Final Cut Pro X, you have purchased it from the App Store, so you can download it in your MacBook Pro for free. To do it, open App Store > Purchases, and download Final Cut Pro X. If you have an older Final Cut version, I recommend you to install it into your computer using the DVDs where Final Cut Pro came.
If you have to transfer more data, you should consider the option of using Migration Assistant. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889

  • How do I import or export iLife music into Final Cut Pro 7. Thanks

How do I import or export iLife music into Final Cut Pro 7? Thanks.

Locate the .caf file you want to use in FCP in the Finder.  Normally, iLife sound files will be in Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/(subfolder).
Open the file on SoundTrack Pro, the go to File->Save a Copy As.  In the Save As window that will open, navigate to where you want to save the file, then near the bottom of that window, use the drop-down File Format menu to choose AIFF.  Set the bit depth to 16-Bit Integer and the Sampling Rate to 48000 hz.
Import the resulting AIFF file into your FCP project.

  • Ilife Sound Effects and Final Cut Pro Sounds are not appearing in Final Cut Pro X anymore!?

    Hello,
I am new to the app Final Cut Pro X. And recently when I have gone into the Music and Sound Folder in final cut pro the option for Ilife Sound Effects and FCPX Sound Effects do not appear. I have read other forums and they have said to drag the sound files into FCPX but that isn't even a option. It onlt has iTunes options, please reply back someone this is stressing me out. I don't know if it is because of Mavericks or whatever but it is driving me insane and I need help!
This is what it looks like .

This is a known issue in FCP X 10.1 and you will find many posts about it in the forum just do a search. Several solutions have worked for different users. Try the following:
    1. Open and close GarageBand then relaunch FCP
    2. Open and close iPhoto then relaunch FCP
    3. Close and reopen FCP
    4. Trash FCP preferences then relaunch FCP
Any one of these may work. Just try them in any order. Be aware the problem may recur.

  • Error installing Final Cut Studio and iLife on Leopard

When I upgraded to Leopard, I decided to entirely wipe my boot drive since I was experiencing problems with certain applications (ie: Final Cut Pro) in Tiger. Therefore I've been re-installing all of my applications in Leopard. I've been having some problems though, when I try to install Final Cut Studio, I get this message after a while of it trying to install the Apple Soundtrack Pro loops disc:
    http://salsunproductions.com/misc/fcsinstallproblem.jpg
I also get a similar error when trying to install iLife 06.
The strange thing is that I am able to run the Applications fine with the exception that all my Final Cut Studio applications don't remember their serial number and my name/organization. I get this message every time I boot up a Final Cut Studio Application (this is the original Final Cut Studio, PPC)

    As for the registration problem:

As for the disc install, if you're sure you're disc isn't just scratched, then I guess there's nothing to do but wait for 10.5.1 and see what happens.

  • IMovie 08, iMovie 6, or Final Cut Express

I just got a new Sony HDR-SR12 HD camera. It records in 1080i. I tried iMovie 08, but I don't like the export options. I used the iMovie 08 import .mov file and opened it in iMovie 6. I exported the video and it doesn't look that good. I'm thinking about Final Cut Express but I don't know how it integrates with iLife apps. What's the best option?

iMovie 08 imports AVCHD in full 1080i. The AVCHD is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080.
The issue comes when you render the project. The iMovie 08 presets max out at 960x540 for Apple TV. Apple TV looks very good because most TVs will upscale it back to 1920x1080.
It is possible to export to Quicktime in full 1920x1080.
However, then you have the problem of how to play it back.
You can play it back at 1920x1080 on your Mac, if your screen is large enough.
You can play it back on a Sony Playstation 3.
You can play it on a BluRay Disk Player.
Toast 9 permits burning a BluRay Disk in full 1920x1080. You will need a BluRay disk Burner for this. Toast 9 also lets you do a short AVCHD/Bluray disk on a regular DVD on a regular DVD burner, but you are limited to about 20 minutes of playing time.
If you burn to a normal DVD in MPEG2, you are limited to 480i, so that is the worst option.

  • Why Can't I Install Final Cut Studio?

I have a MacBook Pro which is about 12 months old. It has a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 Processor and 8G of RAM. I have been trying to install Final Cut Studio 5.1. Yeah I know that is an OLLLLLLLLLLLD version. Why I chose not to update is neither here nor there. I was about to update when Final Cut Pro X was realeaded and FCS vanished into the ether. I really only wanted DVD Pro but when that wouldn't install I went back to Square 1.
The specificationa as stated are:- "These discs contain the files required to install Final Cut Studio 5.1 on either PPC or Intel based Mac computers."
The error message that shows up on the screen when I click on the install package is:- "You can't open the application Final Cut Studio pro.mpkg because Power PC applucations are no longer supported."
This is despite the stated specifications and the fact that there is a Universal Icon on the discs.
I am also having a simillar but not the same problem with iLife '06 but i'll start another thread on that.
I'm confused, thanks for your help in advance.

Your problem is you are running Lion as your OS (10.7) and Lion does not support Rosetta which is required to run the INSTALLER of FCS 2. If you were running Snow Leopard, you would have been able to do the install.

  • IMovie to iDVD or Final Cut Pro to DVD studio pro "Better output"

I recorded some family videos onto a computer with a WinTV pci board.
Converted the MPEG2 to DV/DVCPro NTSC on my Mac with MPEG stremeclip.
Used quicktime to divide the tapes/clips where we had switched recordings.
Now i was going to use final cut pro but i am starting to like imovie 09.
I want to take the clips and add simple fades mostly cross dissolve fade to black and just nothing something not noticeable. Then once I have combined the events reasonably. I want to put them onto DVD.
    Say our christmas videos
One DVD with each year christmas event.
And one for someone's birthdays through the years.
If you need me to elaborate ill try harder.
So should I use Final Cut Pro then have DVD studio make the DVDs Or iMovie 09 and iDVD 09. Which would have the best looking output.
Oh by the way how can i remove the static feedback from the recordings I don't care which application i need tell me which one.
If someone needs an example of the main sound i don't want ill post one.
Note: I will be posting this in the Final Cut Pro forms as well.

Since you have both, you should run both and see if you see a difference.
    I would expect that a $1,400 product would outperform a $20 product (= 1/4 of iLife).
But the question is, How much better? and is it worth the extra effort to you? Only you can decide that.
Another option for you to consider is you can edit in iMovie and export your project to Final Cut Pro in XML. Might be the best of both worlds.

  • If i edit in final cut pro x, how can i create a dvd

What is the best DVD creator to download to create DVDs  from movies edited in Final Cut Pro X?

iDVD gets my top vote - it is no longer available from Apple, but still part of the retail iLife 09 or 11 versions available from online resellers. It offers customizable menus/themes which will give your creation a professional look. It encodes/authors and you can burn directly from it.
Second is Roxio Toast (no customizable menus, but many other features and an excellent burn software).
I've tried DVD creator and found it to be too simplistic. Then there is Burn (free) - it burns.
I use iDVD to "create" and Toast to burn.

  • No refresh displaying iTunes song in Final Cut Pro X anymore?

Not sure what is going on, but when I display iTunes songs in Final Cut they do not refresh when changing from folder to folder. I dont see that problem with other Apps like Garageband, iLife Sound Effects or Final Cut Pro Sound Effects, only when trying to search for songs I know exists in any of my iTunes library folders or playlists.
Im sure it has to be a problem but uncertain when it started. For example, if I am looking at the content of "Impacts & Crashes" from Final Cut Pro Sound Effects, and then select to see any of y iTunes playlists/folders I still get displayed the previous "Impacts & Crashes" content from Final Cut. The only way I can see iTunes content is if I select the main iTunes parent, there I see my whole library. But again, I can't narrow down to any of my playlists or folders.
Was this funcionality removed or is it a bug? Am I the only one with this thing going on? How can I fix it?
    Thanks for any help.

Ahh, figured it out - for you folks that notice the same error...
If you have iTunes in an external drive (like I do) probably the drive is sleeping. Wake it up (I doouble clicked my drive to access it). After that your iTunes lib might be accessed from Final Cut. Suppose this applies to anything else trying to import from an externally fed iTunes library.

  • Final Cut Pro is Sluggish

This is only my second post to forums, so again, forgive me if I break protocol.
I have Final Cut Pro 4.5. For the last three years it has been doing great. No real problems (a couple of the original audio filters crash FCP when I run them) but I've steered clear of them or used them in Soundtrack with no problem.
But that's not why I'm writing. About three weeks ago, I noticed that after about half an hour or so of editing in Final Cut, it would start to get sluggish. Even moving the scrubber would take a few seconds. I have 1G RAM and have had it since I got the computer three years ago. NO problems until just recently. When I restart FCP it runs fine again, until about another half hour in to it.
Let me know if any additional info is needed and I will do my best to supply it.
    Thanks!
    Brett

Thank you. I have tried to repair Permissions in Disk Utlity and did the whole Delete Preferences thing. Found those on the boards here before I posted. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. My bad. I will try the Applecare disks. Didn't know about those.
As for more details, it is FCP 4.5, I just loaded OS 10.4.10 But this strarted BEFORE the install. I bought Tiger because I thought it might help (and I wanted the New iLife). Quicktime version 7.2. I have three hard drives, Two are in the PowerMac Tower itself (came with them 250G each) and I have one External USB drive, but I use this one for archiving only, none of my footage is on it. Uh, let's see. My favortie color is blue, I like long walks in the park and my Apple MOTION doesn't work any more after my install of Tiger, but I already posted about that in the Motion discussion area.
I really can't think of much else. I will try the Applecare and report back what happened.

  • Final Cut Express HD won't recognize .mov / quicktime files.

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch with FCE3 installed. I'm using OSX 10.6.6. My camera doesn't put video out through a firewire, only usb, meaning FCE can't recognize it (to the best of my knowledge). So, to get around that, I uploaded the video through iLife '11 and converted all my video into one long .mov/quicktime file. When I try to import the video, I get a "file error" message.
Any tips on how I can get the video form iMovie to FCE? If it means not using quicktime, I'm fine with that, too.
    Thanks!

Well, to repsond to Ian, I don't have FCE4. I have FCE3. I'll upgrade eventually, though.
And I have a Cannon FS20. I did what you said in the quicktime player. Here's the format:
    "H.264, 960 x 540, Millions Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 44100 Hz."
The video plays fine in iMovie '11. I even tried the "share with Final Cut" tab in iMovie, but the video still wouldn't work in FCE3.
But I might add that it's not just the video from my camera that doesn't work in FCE3. It's all quicktime video. Even video that worked in FCE3 on my old Powerbook G4 now don't work in the same in FCE3 for my MacBook Pro.

  • Aperture and other Pro Applications ( Final Cut, Motion, DVD Studio Pro )

    Hi folks,
I have bought Final Cut Studio a while back, and have been working with all the tools for a while now ( FCP, Motion and DVD Studio Pro ). Recently I also switched to Aperture to manage / capture / organise my digital photographs ( previously I used iPhoto ).
Now I was wondering how I could use the pictures from my Aperture library in Motion or DVD Studio Pro. When I look at the file Browser, I can easily use some iPhoto pictures, but apparently I can't seem to find anything for Aperture.
What I would like to do is use some pictures from Aperture in a Motion project and also include an Aperture album in DVD Studio as a SlideShow.
What would be the best way to do this ? Do I have to export the pictures I want to use ? Or am I missing something ?
    Regards,
    Stefaan

    Stefaan,
Unfortunately, that type of integration between the Pro Apps is not there (yet). It would definitely be a nice feature to have. We should all send feedback to Apple asking for this feature. For now, you will need to export photos for use in these other apps.
Along the same lines, I would also like to see integration with Aperture and the "iLife" programs. Since Aperture will likely replace iPhoto for at least some of us, it would be nice to be able to use Aperture photos in these apps as well.

  • Help Required - iMovie 11 V Final Cut Express

Firstly don't shoot me if this has been posted into the wrong place.
I've recently and quite successfully been getting to grips with iMovie. I mainly use it for personal projects importing files from .mov files, DVD's and Screen recording software.
I started using it a few months ago when I upgraded to the new Quad Core mac. First using iMovie'09 then recently upgraded iLife to version 11.
As a total amateur in anything 3D and Video production related it's certainly one area I never imagined I'd enter. Some may comment "Well it's not hard" but at present I'm loving the challenges that it presents me.
However, whilst I'm also not looking to become Spielberg, I do feel that because I have got to grips with the software fairly easily and quite quickly, I seem to have been left feeling that it's already met and exceeded my own expectations, and has now left me wanting more, particularly effects wise. (Maybe I just need to search a bit harder for something I haven't yet found - and I don't mean religion).
Therefore are there any plans to release further plug-ins for iMovie 11 to add to the experience, or would anyone here recommend upgrading to the Final Cut Suite?
FCE I have no experience of whatsoever, but do have friends that use it regularly. (I looked to download a demo version but nothing appears to be available) but it does, from what I have seen and read, offer more in the way of effects. (Or is this simply the upgrade packages that can be added) Am I wrong to even compare the two together?
So should I stick with what I have or make the change over - Basically need some helpful advice before I make what I feel may be a wasted purchase?

    Ziatron wrote:

you probably know, Adobe Premiere, iMovie a + b + i and FinalCut come from the same master-mind (Randy U.)
My first experience with NLE was Avid on some PowerMac - 40min max to import
It had a 'Moviola'-GUI: vertical film'strips'. For European editors this was a huge hurdle, because they were used Steinbecks - horizontal reels.
IMHD≤6 (and FC) tries to 'emulate' that film-strip metaphor too = timeline.
what I noticed: absolute beginners prefer the 'pool' of clips in iM-b, instead of the single-'slide' in iM-a = a better overview of things to come. skimming is a brutal fast way to chop clips together.
a word about that auto-scrolling: that is inspired by Garageband, isn't it ?
I hope, we'll see even more of those interface-marvel in FC/e.
I tested AdobePremiereElements for Mac a while ago, it offers simple features we miss in iM-b (example: pointers) - it is less intuitive, less 'snappy', less 'easy'. Although it is 'old fashioned' with a timeline (and 'slides', as iM-a)
I guess, we old Silverbacks just have to open our minds for new ways of handling videos ... +think different+ anyone? …

  • Final Cut Studio Pro 2 Install - Skip Final Cut Pro itself - TT_NEWALREADYI

    Dear All,
I hope you can help. I have just bought a new Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, with OS X 10.4.10 running. It came with iLife 08.
I installed Logic Studio 8 (which was successful), and have been trying to install my copy of Final Cut Studio 2. When I run the installation, the options appear for custom install, but FInal Cut Pro, Compressor and QMaster are greyed out, and the action identified for them is "skip. If I rest the mouse over any of the options the text TT_NEWERALREADYINSTALLED appears.
I have tried uninstalling the Logic Studio components with AppZapper, and retrying the install of Final Cut Studio, but no matter what I try to do, it won't install Final Cut Pro.
    Can anybody help?
    Kind Regards,
    Nick.
