Final Cut Playback

We have just installed Final Cut Studio 2 with a Kona LSe card.
We capture...good. We Edit to Tape...bad. The video does not sync up with the audio. The playback in the timeline is fine when viewing on the canvas. Watching the playback on a monitor you can see the video lagging behind the audio. We then Edit to Tape and sure enough, the playback of the BetaSP tape shows the video lagging behind the audio. Which set of settings should I be troubleshooting for this particular problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.
C.J.

monitor the audio and video from the Kona. Make a dub from any source to the SP machine with BITC. make sure the BITC matches the tc on the SP machine. Capture a segment of the BITC test tape and compare the TC FCP says is there with the BITC on the footage. Adjust the Frame offset in your capture settings. Make sure in the system prefs for your computer that "Sound" both input and output are selected as Kona or whatever it shows up as. If you are still getting a delay between audio and video and you are monitoring the Kona output on an NTSC monitor and monitoring Kona audio output on some speakers contact AJA tech support or your supplier

  • Final Cut playback issues...help please!

I've been running FCP7 on my Mac Pro for over a year now with no issues.
Recently I purchased a pair of Dell U2410 Monitors to work on, and this is when I really began to notice playback issues in FCP. Although I just started noticing it with the new monitors, I have a feeling it is related to my FCP or my graphics card. The issue ONLY happens within FCP, video plays fine once exported.
    Specs on the machine:
    Mac Pro 3,1
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    10gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 - less than 6 months old.
Here is a link to the video playback compared to the exported QT. As you can see there is some crazy horizontal issues with the video playback. It happens with all formats and resolutions of video.
I've tried trashing prefs and reinstalling FCP with no luck. It happens all over the area of the video, not just top or bottom. Sorry I had to film it because it's not visible any other way. This happens with files playing off my main HD and external drives.
Any help is greatly appreciated, it's really a pain to edit when the playback is like this. And no, I don't have Apple Care and am too late to get it:(

Are you using one of these computer monitors in a Desktop Cinema Display mode?
If so, this is not the way to monitor your material for any QC. You need a qualified device to export a video signal to a proper monitor.
You could use one the 2410s to see what things look like if fed through a Matrox MXO2 mini.

  • Final cut Spinning Beach Ball when i press spacebar to playback the sequenc

    Hello,
We have 5 machines with xsan, final cut and open directory. On one only machine, when i playback secuences appears the spinning beach ball for 5 seconds before playing. The When i restar that machine, the final cut playback correctly again, but if i'm working with Final for 1 hour or 2, this happens again. I uninstall the final cut and reinstall it, and this still happening.
does anybody any idea about it?
    thank for your time.

Anything about that particular workstation that sets it apart form the others? Installed software, background processes, attached hardware/peripherals? Does the issue happen regardless of the account being used?
Have you run any diagnostics on that machine? All the basic system troubleshooting steps taken? Eg Repaired permissions, Rebuilt with Disk Warrior (commercial product).
Have you done the usual step of trashing FCP preferences on that machine? On that front, you might also want to check out Jon Chappell's excellent FCS Maintenance Pack ( http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_maintenance.htm ) and FCS Maintenance Network Admin ( http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsm_netadmin.htm ).

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and External NTSC monitor

    Hello.
I just purchased the imace 20" 2.4 machine. It's still in the box as I'm getting all my old files off my pc (last one, this makes me all mac!).
My question is this. I have final cut studio 2. What I want to do i use the mini-dvi output to go to an NTSC monitor for final Cut playback.
I haven't been able to find a solid answer on this. I know I can get another external VGA/DVI monitor and it would be work, but I need to use an NTSC (4:3) monitor for some projects.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks!
    Bobby

Well, you can't use the file he sent unless you upgrade. But if you get the card dumps back, you should be able to LOG AND TRANSFER to ProRes on your system fine. Or was that the issue? They had garbage at the end?
Trashing preferences fixes a lot of FCP oddities.

  • Pixelation with Final Cut Pro HD

This question has probably been answered many times but overall in Final Cut Pro I've been having a problem with it and I just want a final explanation (FCP 4, FCP HD, FCP 5)
Whenever I add a title to my video, I do my basic render and play it back with cinema desktop preview, and it looks a bit pixelated. I can understand that my dv footage looks bad, but my titles look BAD when played back. I have everything at the highest settings. I can always SCRUB and frame by frame view my video at the high quality I would like but when I play it back it turns pixelated again. When I use a T.V. to view my external video, it looks fine, but it would be helpful if it looked good on the computer monitor.
Can somebody answer my stupid question?

First, you might want to view the footage in QuickTime Player. But be sure check your preferences so that "Use high quality video setting when available" is checked. If it is not pixeled in QuickTime Player with this setting enabled, your problem is with Final Cut playback settings.
If the footage is showing pixelization in both apps, you are probably experiencing artifacting, which is a natural effect of all digital compressed footage. You can minimize this by using the highest quality format available when editing. It is normal for footage to get pixelized in footage with alot of motion or fine detail. I'm assuming you're using DV format or HDV format. Both of these have this problem.
If you would like to try something that might help this, visit www.natress.com. Under the free plugins menu you'll find an experimental FCP plugin called G Low Pass which claims to limit the amount of detail in a scene when things get too busy. This reduces the likelyhood of artifacting when applied to DV footage and it seems to help in a very subtle way.
As for DVD playback having occasional large, blocky pixels, it could be a small scratch on the DVD surface, or perhaps a poor burn. But if the footage has the same problems in QuickTime Player, the DVD isn't to blame.

  • I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6

    Hello,
I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6 of 1920x1080 60p footage.
I transcoded MTS files shot on a Sony NEX FS100 into Apple Pro Res mov files but the
playback stutters in Final Cut and QTime making it impossible to edit. Is this because the files
are just so big the computer is having a problem processing them? If so what should I edit in to preserve the
    best quality?
I am Running Mac OSX 10.6.8
    2x2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Admittedly my FCUT is out of date, I intend to up to X when I finish off an ongoing project.
    Thanks Luci

You might consider running diskwarrior on your drive (alsoft.com).  And run diskutility, repair disk.  A corruption of the drive could cause problems.  Also, drive speed starts to fall sharply as the drive gets full.  Make sure you have a minimum of 10% free space on the drive.  You might also get a utility to check the speed of the drive.  I think Aja has one.
Also, do you have anything else connected to the firewire bus?  If so, try disconnecting it.  You might also try disconnecting ethernet and turning off your airport.  Resetting your fcp preferences couldn't hurt.

  • Video playback from Final Cut Pro studders over HDMI

I have a problem playing back video from FCP. The video output will studder during horizontal pans when I output via HDMI. The audio output is not affected.
I have been playing video successfully using FireWire for output in FCP, however, my new video switcher system will not support FireWire output.
What are some possible causes of this problem?
    System stats:
    * Mac Mini (2010 model)
    * 8GB RAM
    * OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard)
    * Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 (Final Cut Studio 3)

@ Studio X : The files were originally created with Final Cut Pro, rendered out to QuickTime, then are being played back with Final Cut Pro. The file that has the most noticable studdering is a 60-minute timeline sequence in Final Cut. All files are being stored and played back from the Mac Mini's internal hard drive. Everything was originally shot on DV and formatted for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
@ Shane Ross : Are there any settings in the MacOS or FCP where I can improve the HDMI video signal? Or do you know of / have any experience with Firewire to HDMI converters? Unfortunately, my new signal path relies on HDMI from the video playback.
My current setup uses the Firewire output, which is then converted to composite video & analog audio using a pair of ageing DV tape decks. That setup is becoming troublesome due to age.

  • Quicktime playback error and Final Cut Pro

    Hi,
I'm having a problem watching a quicktime movie that I made in Final Cut Pro. I'm working on a project at school and the computers there are all G5's. I put the film together at school and I exported the movie using the default settings in Final Cut for quicktime for the web at the medium bandwidth level. Part of the assignment is to post a clip from the film on for playback on the net. The film is playable on computers with quicktime 7 installed, like the ones at school or my PC which has the latest version of quicktime on it. But on my Ibook I only have quicktime 6.5.3. I have an older Ibook, it's a G3 700Mhz running OSX version 10.2.8. The latest version of quicktime requires 10.3.9+. When I click the link for the clip it loads on a new page and then gives me an error message saying quicktime is missing a component and it's not available to download, I click ok and the video appears as a white box with the playback controls at the bottom. The audio works fine but there's no picture.
Is there an update somwhere for quicktime 6 that will fix the problem?

How to Identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file
    In QuickTime Player
    Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
    Look in the Format: field
Note that QuickTime Player may fail to display any audio information for some files.
    In MPlayer OSX:
Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info
    In VLC
    Open the movie in VLC
    Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.

  • How can I playback blu-ray .img files generated by Final Cut Pro X?

When I share a Final Cut Pro X project in Blu-ray and I set the output device as Hard drive (blu-ray), it creates a blu-ray image with a .img extension.
By the way, the project's clips are AVCHD (.mts extension) and the settings are set to 1080i (1440x1080 25i).
My question is: can I playback this file without having to burn a blu-ray disc?
I've been looking for information, and some people seems to playback blu-ray .iso files.
And: would Compressor 4 solve my problem? (is there anyway in Compressor to create a .iso image or something easier to play?).
By the way, I do have access to both Windows and Mac computers.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pol

    Thanks for the answer.
If you own Compressor 4, could you tell me if it includes an option to generate a .iso file instead of a .img?
(here's information on how to playback a .iso).
    Thanks,

  • Color Resolution Presets and Final Cut fullscreen playback of 2.35:1

I have sent a project from Final Cut Pro to Color. In Color's resolution settings, I have selected the 2k 2.35 setting to achieve a wider image. Once I finish Coloring and rendering and I send the Color project back to Final Cut Pro, the aspect ratio is a perfect 2.35:1 wide image.
HOWEVER, when I use the Digital Cinema Desktop preview playback function (basically full-screen playback), Final Cut plays my footage back at 2.35:1, but stretched to fit 16:9. This is what it looks like in full-screen: http://gallery.me.com/amirij#100115/Screen-20shot-202009-09-04-20at-203-58-52-20 PM&bgcolor=black
Why is it doing this and how can I fix it? I assume it's a setting, but can't find it...
    Thanks in advance:
    Johnny Amiri

    1) Color correction, especially when done with separate application from the NLE, should be done AFTER picture lock. There are some measures if there are tweaks after, but they aren't 100%. Always wait to color correct until after you have picture lock. But you can render out of Color, media with handles, so you can do minor tweaks. And if you add new shots, make those into separate projects, send them to Color, grade, and send back.
    2) You need to either read the manual, or look for a tutorial on Color. It goes through all the steps. Send to Color...grade in Color...render...then SEND TO FCP. That'll send a new sequence to FCP.  Not a rendered out QT file...the full sequence.

  • Final Cut Pro Video Playback not in Widescreen for Anamorphic Material

I have a Panasonic DVX-100B hooked up to my computer and am running Final Cut Pro. I shot everything in the anamorphic squeeze mode. When I play this material back through my camera (which displays the material as widescreen because I forced it on the camera menu) it doesn't playback on the TV in widescreen, it stretches it back out vertically. Is there a setting in Final Cut that will send the signal as a 16:9 signal to the TV, so that it will understand it correctly?

    baadayakazi wrote:

No, FCP does not send out an anamorphic flag via firewire. What I mean is, it sends out the video to your deck simply as 720x480, without telling the deck (and therefore the monitor, as well) if that is supposed to be a 16:9 or 4:3 image. In order to monitor with the correct ratio, you'll need to have a monitor that can correct for aspect ratio.
If you're working on a pro monitor, it should have a 16:9 button (or menu setting, at least). Some recent - as in the last 4-5 years - consumers TVs also have an anamorphic squeeze feature that will compress the image vertically. If you've got a 16:9 TV, you'll need to use the stretch feature (of all things) to correct your preview image.
All that said, I'm guessing you fall into the last camp: you're previewing out to a consumer TV that cannot do vertical compression? If so, your only alternative is to nest your anamorphic sequence in a 4:3 one for preview purposes. Of course, this is needlessly cumbersome (and you run into the dreaded issues with nests failing to update every now-and-then) and requires more CPU horsepower. Either that or edit with the distorted image...
Or are you in a whole 'nother situation?

  • Why is the playback in Final Cut Express 4 delayed by 30 seconds?

I am finding editing with Final Cut Express 4 has gotten slow and frustrating.  This is a new problem.  I have used this software for two years with no problems until now. I'll start out editing a project normally for about an hour.  Then the playback function starts to lag.  After I render a clip and try to play back what I've done by hitting the space bar, I have to look at the spinning color wheel for 30 seconds before my video will play.  I have no other programs open, I have 10 GB of RAM.  I upgraded my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard a few months ago.  All my Apple Software is updated.  FCX has also been crashing and locking up.  Is there a preferred way to save my project for more efficient editing?  I also tried starting a new project with only a five minute audio mp3 clip and a 10 sec slug for video.  I get the same playback delay with this project.  In this case I only saved the project not "save all".

    Hi Robert,
I've never unistalled and reinstalled an OS so it's a little scary for me.
I suggested uninstalling/reinstalling Final Cut Express, not the OS!
When I click on the FCE icon on my task bar to open it, which version is being opened?
Probably the one on your 1TB drive, but to be sure, you can always just open your /Applications folder on the 1TB drive and double-click the FCE application to start FCE.
Could there be a problem with a duplication of applications such as FCE on these two drives?
Highly unlikely.  The system looks for applications in the /Applications folder on your startup drive, which is now your 1TB drive.
My video is 4:3 so I chose 640x480 to prevent stretching of the image.
No, you need to choose 720x480 (DV-NTSC) frame size. This is the standard 4:3 DV frame size.  640x480 is a computer monitor resolution.  720x480 is the actual, standard def, DV (television) frame size.  It is 4:3.   The 720 line height includes something called "overscan" which you never actually see.  The image you see will be 4:3.   FCE is not designed for 640x480 frame size ... do you have to render these clips after you put them in your DV-NTSC sequence?
Then after about an hour of editing, the playback delays started up again.
Well, that's bizarre, I must admit.  Kinda has me stumped, except for the possibility that FCE may need to be uninstalled/reinstalled.

  • New Mac Pro/ Final Cut X User--Jaggies and Low Res Playback

    Good morning,
New Macx Pro with Cinema display and Final Cut X (demo) user. Working with P2 footage and noticed jagged egdes in upon playback. In other words, the footages appears as low res. I have the program monitor is set to full res and "fit". I am also testing Premier on my Mac (I've used Premier for years on a PC) and noticed a similar issue, but the jaggies aren't quite as bad.
This issue has me worried. Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Okay, problem solved...whew! It turns out the playback setting in preferences was indeed set to "better..." and not high. Well, that deserves a...duh!!!
    Thank you for the recommendation.
I also fixed the Premier issue. I had to specify custom presets for the project.

  • Synchronizing playback on multiple Final Cut Systems...

    Everyone,
I'm setting up a room which will have 4 large LED screens on the walls. I have 4 Final Cut Systems (all with AJA boxes).
What I want to do is SYNCHRONIZE playback of all the systems for a presentation.
Basically, I'd like to have some sort of script (or something) that allows me to click in one place and it triggers ALL 4 of the Final Cuts to start playing their videos in sync. Audio will only be monitored through 1 master Final Cut and play via a surround sound system.
I did see "Virtual VTR Pro". WAY too expensive. It was about $10,000. I'm sure there's an easier way to do this...other than 4 people doing a countdown and simultaneously hitting play.
I'm sure someone will mention "Automate", but keep in mind...4 machines simultaneously.

    Nice creative solution Travis
