Final Cut Pro 3 Shuts down

I am forced to use an old version of Final cut on my new Mac Mini, but everytime I use a shortcut key, Final Cut closes. I have tried dissabling shortcuts in system preferences, but that did not help. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussions, Spider.
You need to provide more information - What shortcut key? What happens?

  • Final Cut Pro shuts down/crashes at launch

I never had problems launching Final Cut before. I haven't touched it for about a month, I tried to launch it today. It runs through the splash page where its loading the program -- asks me where my External A/V device is if it's not on -- then I either turn it on and click 'check again' or just click 'continue' either way it finishes loading and the splash screen disappears... then nothing. Final Cut just doesn't launch. I have no idea what's wrong, I would really appreciate help on this, I can't do anything right now

First, it's always a mistake to do any updates to your system regardless of whether they have anything to do with fcp UNLESS you have backed up your system startup drive using a cloning utility. This will allow you to quickly restore your system to it's working state if something goes south.

  • Final Cut Pro slowing down the entire computer - Help!

I wonder if anyone can please help me.
I own Final Cut Studio and everything was running perfectly for several months until recently.
My copy of Final Cut Pro 7 started running very very slowly, even the drop down menus (file, edit e.t.c) would take several seconds to open and would be delayed to the point of being unusable. The effect is such that even upon quitting the program the entire Mac runs too slowly to operate and requires a hard restart.
I should clarify that it makes no difference what project is open, in fact after the re-install there wasn't a single project open however the problem persisted.
After restarting the computer returns to it's usual speed until Final Cut is opened again.
I went to the Apple Store and they told me to reinstall the program and free up some space on my computer, both of which I've just done but to no avail.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm desperate for help as I need this software for my degree. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using a Mac Book Pro running Leopard, with 41. 68 GB of free space and my copy of Final Cut is legit.

I can understand people's resistance to this process but it is absolutely the only way to ensure a problem free installation of your professional applications.
Herein are X's rules for a happy erase and reinstallation experience.
    • Make a list of all Applications to install. Which ones do you need? Go through your Applications and Utilities folder and note which ones you'll want to reinstall. Note the version.
(I don't know about you, but I had a shocking number of apps I downloaded, used for a few times and never used again. Forget installing these disused apps.)
    • If you are upgrading from a PPC to an intel machine, you'll want to know if the apps are UB or PPC. Upgrading your PPC software to UB can be a significant cost in a PPC to intel conversion. Know what you are getting into - do a search before installation to see if there is a UB version available. You can find out whether an app is PPC or UB by looking in System Profiler>Software>Applications. This window will also tell you the current installed version number. Generate a .pdf file of it and have everything listed for your records.
    • In the list, note whether is was a download or you have a disk. If it was a download, find the DMG or installer package and copy it to an external firewire drive. Put it in a folder titled - Apps to be installed - or something easily identifiable.
    • If you need to go back to a previous version (e.g. QT 6.5.2) download the dmg file BEFORE you start the installation process.
    • In the list, note if the application is a full install or an UPGRADE. If an upgrade, make sure you have the previous version's disks (as well as the serial numbers - see below).
If the UPGRADE version does not require the previous version to be present - eg when installing the upgrade version of FCP 6, DO NOT install earlier software. All you'll need is the previous serial number. The way to figure this out is to try to install the newest version. If it needs the previous version present before proceeding, the install process will tell you that.
Some upgrades will require that a version of the previous app is on the disk. If this is the case, when you install the first version, simply install the minimum so the app will be on the hard drive. You will need to do this because there will be NOTHING on the disk after you do your clean erase.
    • Referencing your list, find ALL your disks before you start. This includes previous versions if you are unsure whether they will be needed.
    • Spend some time looking through this forum for Professional Application installation issues. The classic example is a conflict between Logic and FCP. Install FCP first and you'll have no issues.
    • Sort your list into an installation sequence. Lay out your disks in that order.
    • Referencing the list, make sure you have ALL your serial numbers including those you've downloaded. I've purchased a number of programs on line and the only documentation of the serial number was an email. All those are kept in a dedicated folder in Mac Mail. For serial numbers that arrived via electronic means, use cut and paste instead of re-typing whenever possible. This will prevent errors in transcription.
In making the list, TEXT EDIT works ok, (I use Excel). Text edit has the benefit of being easily readable on any mac. Print the list out for reference, put a copy on a flash drive or a firewire drive where you can access it to cut and past serial numbers during the installation process.
    • Recognize this is going to take some time. Ranting, drinking too much coffee, swearing, sitting in front of the computer watching the progress bar, etc will not make things go faster. All it will to is put you in a really bad frame of mind. Do it over a weekend when you can be multitasking. While you are cleaning off the mountains of paper on your desk or raking the yard, you can take regular breaks to check on progress.
    Process -
    • Download Carbon Copy Cloner or one of the other backup utilities and do a full backup of your existing system drive to an external firewire drive. Make the drive bootable. *Do not* cheap out on this as this is your insurance policy. If you forget something or can not find a serial number, you often can find it and copy it from the backup system to the newly installed version. Or, if things go horribly wrong, you can simply copy the old system back to your computer and pick up where you left off.
If you have a MacPro or G5 tower, an alternative to cloning your existing system disk is to pick up a new hard drive to use as the clean new system disk. Your existing system disk will be the clone.
    • Once you have gathered and organized all the materials and backed up the drive or installed the new system drive ...
    • Insert your OSX installation disk, reboot the computer from it and erase the hard drive. Use the ZEROs option as this will map out any bad sectors. This will take time. See the note above.
    • Install the OS. If it is an upgrade install, see the note above regarding upgrade installs. Repair Permissions and then run the updates. Repair Permissions.
    • Install your applications following your list. Make sure to Repair Permissions after each install and update..
Have fun, be prepared for a few minor glitches. If you multitask, you can get the garage/ or office cleaned out and your computer rebuilt. In all honesty, this process took all weekend plus time in the next week as I discovered apps that needed additional updates, configuration settings, etc. No doubt it would have been faster if I was sitting at the console the whole time, but I was able to get the office cleaned up and organized (which also makes ME much faster). Overall it was a very slick process.
When you have a fully functioning system again (you have tested all applications and everything works), CLONE the new system and put your info, your notes and the disks in a safe place - once you've done this once, why go through the pain of organizing this stuff again ...
Now, rejoice in a much faster machine with a lot more free disk space.
    Cheers,
    x

  • Final Cut Express Shuts Down on Lanuch

    Hey all,
I've been trying to get Final Cut Express to work with Leopard since I bought Leopard a few weeks back. Even with the update tonight, it still shuts down unexpectedly. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Did you do a clean erase and install of the new operating system? How did you get to Leopard? If you just did an archive and install or a simple upgrade it most likely will not work properly. I have been using FCE and FCP with Leopard since it was released and have not found a significant problem in the applications, other than those that were already there.

  • Final Cut Express Shuts down right after capturing

    Hello all:
I am using FCE 3.5. I have used this for about a year now and I have developed a problem with FCE shutting down right after I hit escape. I run a lab for a university and it is doing it on ALL of them so it isn't an isolated incident. I repair permissions, reset the PRAM, trashed the prefs and I don't know what else to do.
I am running imac G5's using 10.4.11 and the new imacs running leopard. Both sets are doing it.
Any help would be appreciated since our classes start soon.
    Thank you.

Can you tie the crashes to a recent event: a software update, a new piece of hardware? What else is connected to the computers?
(You have, of course, triple-checked that the FCE Easy Setup matches the footage you're capturing, yes?)
After the program crashes, is the captured footage saved?
What's the lab setup? Does each student have an individual user account? On each computer?
    Lots of questions, I know...
    Here's a suggestion:
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Create a new admin account on one computer. Set the FCE Scratch Disk to the internal drive. Disconnect everything but the camera. Try to capture. See what happens.

  • Final Cut Pro 5 - Unrendered

    hi there,
im bit of a 'newbie' on this program, and I am finding it quite difficult.
I am creating a video, and when I make a sequence with numerous clips and try to play in the Canvas, it has 'UNRENDERED' in big writing and a blue picture on the video screen. I have checked the manual and I am a bit stuck. Would be great if anyone could help
    thanks

There are several reasons a file can be unrendered.
    1. you are using the wrong sequence settings ie it is an HDV project and you are using an easy set up for DV. Changing the easy setup (under final cut pro drop down menu) and create a new sequence usually sorts this out. Copy and past the cut you have done into this new sequence.
    2. If you have effects on the time line (which you haven't got to yet) they may need to be rendered. Rendering is done under the sequence drop down menu, render selection, not the effects drop down menu (as I kept looking at).
    3. There is a button called RT on the left hand top side of the sequence window. You can change the quality of play back so less rendering is needed and the number of frames displayed.
but it will be the sequence settings, it takes a bit to get used to them but once you have it all in your head then you don't look back.
FYI always list the format that you are working with (PALdv50i etc) and the settings of the sequence (right click on the sequence in the folder and click on the settings label) and you should also list your equipment - camera/input device/cards/computer and ram etc or the old boys get very miffed.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 shuts down after installing OSX 10.8

Recently upgraded to OSX 10.8. Initially Final Cut Pro 7 was working but then suddenly crashed. All it does is runs through scripts like its opening but then shuts down.
I thought it was a problem with disc space so I cleared my hard drive. This did not help.
I tried to troubleshoot but could not find the things the troubleshooter mentioned: ~/Library/Preferences; com.apple.finalcutpro.plist; Final Cut Pro User Data; /Library/Receipts; FinalCutPro.pkg.
Tried uninstall/reinstall but I still have same problem. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks... I just figured out how to do the repair disk, but unfortunately not solve my problem. So my next step is doing a clean install of my OS. I'm currently using Time Machine to backup my computer just in case I run into any issues. So I've never done this before and I'm not very computer savvy AT ALL. lol
So I want to make sure I understand things correctly before actually doing it. Essentially I will go to Disk Utility and erase the drive? I'm guessing then restart the computer? Will I be able to open up the App store to get my OSX10.8 reinstalled?
    Thanks

  • Opening log and capture shuts down final cut pro

Hi, I am using final cut pro 5.1 and when I open my log and capture window, the final cut pro instantly shuts down. I just upgraded to 10.4.10. Would that be the problem?
Also, now it doesn't pick up my deck connection via firewire to my sony dsr-11 pal deck.
    Everything was working fine before.
    any advice?

Have you updated all the way to FCP 5.1.4? (or the latest version of 5.1)?
Also, after a system update, trashing the FCP Prefs can usually help out any instability. FCP Rescue makes that nice and easy.

  • Final Cut Pro/Motion Shut Off/Render Errors

I have Final Cut Pro Studio 7. I work mostly with Final Cut and Motion. I have three problems that are occuring on a common basis and I desperately need help.
    1) Final Cut Pro constantly shuts down when attempting to render. Mostly when I am rendering Motion files.
    2) Motion also shuts down when working in it or it completely locks up.
    3) When the Motion files render in Final Cut Pro and I go back to review what I just inserted, purple files show up saying "Render Error In Motion".
I have been trying to figure out how to fix the problem, but everything I do, does not work. Can anyone please help. I have 5 projects I need to get done by the end of next week. Two being due by Tuesday. Any assistance will be helpfull.

First of all, got a crash log? That'd help identify the problem...
When you crash, you get the option of Reporting to Apple? Take that and copy the section of the log with the crashed thread:

  • Final Cut pro 7 Bogging down

I was hoping that some one could help with my Final Cut Pro 7 question.
I have the an 8 Core 6 gigs of ram. 8TB 7200rpm. Editing all in HD with XDCam footage.
I am strarting to get bogged down when I am edtting my videos. Does any body know how to clean up the system so I am running more efficient in final cut pro? My main video files are on one drive and the preview files are set to another drive.
    Can you help?

    Hi
And this is FinalCut Express forum !
But I guess that Your Main / Start-Up / Boot / Mac OS Hard disk is filling up ?
You need more than 25GB free space on this ONE and may be 4-5 times more if You are working with HD-Material.
Even though You use two more external hard disks for "Main video" and "Preview files" the space need to be on Start-Up Hard Disk for Mac OS and application .temp files - as they can not be addressed elsewhere !
Yours Guessing - Bengt W (I use both FCE (4.0.x) and FCP (6.0.6))

  • HT1338 I HAVE INSTALLED MORE MEMORY IE FROM 4GB TO 16GB AND I HAVE LOST MY FINAL CUT PRO X AND OTHER PROGRAMES HOW CAN I DOWN LOAD THEM AGAIN

I HAVE INSTALLED MORE MEMORY ON MY iMAC IE FROM 4GB TO 16GB BUT I HAVE LOST ALL MY FINAL CUT PRO X EDITING SOFTWERE ECT HOW DO I RE-INSTAL IT ALL

    Hi John,
    No reason that should happen!???
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, or are running 10.7+, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Most of my drop down menus showing faded black after installing final cut pro x.. Any ideas?

I recently just installed final cut pro x on my computer. After installing it and rebooting, I noticed that my login picture was faded and orange looking and my drop down menus fonts are thick black text instead of the normal and certain menus are faded and blackened out looking. Any ideas? I have a Macbook pro 2.4GHz core 2 duo with 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running Lion 10.7.3  ...
The only thing i can think of is the final cuts pro software that maybe did it because nothing else was installed or downloaded.
Furthermore, is there a good software that Apple suggest as far as cleaning your computer and optimizing it's performance? I DO NOT want Mackeeper or any of that mess.
    Your help is appreciated

Appreciate your help Ian and others.   I have since uninstalled FCS and reinstalled FCXP only to get the same thing. Loading FCXP stalls at "Looking for Compressor Support".  When I first downloaded FCXP from the App store I didn't notice that FCS was being placed in it's own folder.  It's not something I did manually.  Although moved into it's own folder with FCXP on the same drive.  I was not able to open FCS apps. They would load and then "quit unexpectantly".  They opened just fine before I downloaded FCXP.  Do I need to purchase Compressor so that FCXP recognizes it? It seems this is where it stalls. It doesn't explain however why my computer "FREEZES" while doing this.  I am in the process of re-installing Lion to see if this helps, otherwise I am at a complete loss.
