Final Cut Pro 4.0 Academic issues

I came across a copy of Final Cut Pro Academic Version 4.0 and installed it on my Max Quicksilver 933 and it installed and runs perfectly. So i replace the hard drive with a larger one but installed Leopard 10.5 instead and I also installed Final Cut Pro Academic Version 4.0. However when i try to open FCP it hangs when it gets the the stage where it is loading the " Audi Filters" the little wheel just spins and spins and spins and FCP never launches???? Any ideas why it opens in 10.4.3 and not Leopard 10.5??
I read the installation requirements and my Mac meet them. Dont know what too do???????????

  • Final Cut Pro dropped frame rate issue

Hi there, i currently shot a short film on the canon 5d mark II 30fps and i am trying to edit it in final cut studio 2. I have recently bought the new macbook pro 15inch 2gb module.
Now the canon footage is h.264 but when importing the clips into final cut pro 6 there is a lot of dropped frame rate issues but I thought this machine could handle HD footage?
Can someone more advanced than myself recommend what i am doing wrong or a work flow that i can work with to stop dropped frame rates and render times.
Last piece of information, the project will be entered in film festivals in the spring its only a 3 minute short and i have 5 folders of footage under 4gb each which was taken from the camera
    Thanks for your help.
    Michael

You are missing a huge conceptual point. If the file can not spool off of the hard drive fast enough, you get dropped frames. It isn't a processor or ram issue right now, it is a hard drive speed issue. Your system drive is overtaxed trying to run OSX, applications AND spool video. It just can't keep up. Changing the graphic card isn't going to help (and how do you change the card in a laptop?)
Get an external esata drive - with the new MacBookPro you'll need an esata Expresscard34 adapter for the computer to connect the drive. Firewire is not an option with that machine and USB2 will not cut it with high data rate formats like ProRes.
When you drop in the ProRes clip to the timeline and it tells you there is a mismatch, this means your preset for the timeline is something other than your clip. You WANT ProRes and you need the sequence to match your clip - tell the program to CHANGE the sequence to match the clip.
Video is not easy and it isn't inexpensive. Time to open up those manuals and your wallet!
    Good luck,
    x

  • Final Cut Pro Studio 5 Install issues....

Hey Fellow iPeps., My name is Jonathan and I have a rathe complex issue infront of me. First, let me state that I am by no means a Mac sorta guy. I am in the transition stage where some things in that mac world just make no sense to me. Okay, I am trying to install Final Cut Pro 5 onto my new iMac 27inch unit and keep getting an error msg that reads, Your computer does not have the right hardware.... you know, I have tried installing it on my macbook pro as well... It should be noted that at some point it was installed on my G5. I did not install it so I dont actually know what the difference was. Someone help! Pretty Please

Final Cut Pro 5 is NOT compatible with Intel processor Macs. You need version 5.1 or higher. The current version is FCP 7, which is only available as part of Final Cut Studio 2009 (aka FCS 3).
If you own a legitimate retail version of FCP 5, you can upgrade to FCS 2009 for $299.00 (USD). http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB643Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA&mco=MTA4MjgwODU

  • Final Cut Pro X - software update issues

    Hi,
I’m trying to update my Final Cut Pro X software on my Mac and I keep getting the following error message:
    An error has occurred.
    The operation couldn’t be completed
    (NSURLErrorDomain error – 1102.)(102)
Does anyone know what this means? And, how can I resolve it?  I can’t export my projects out of Final Cut Pro either and keep receiving the error message (error -1); which I think is related to the software needing an update.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Alicia

that error code in human language means 'no read permission'
Are you logged-in with your Account, you purchased the installed version of FCPX with?
Are you using a purchased version or the trial version?

  • Final Cut Pro 3 serial number issue

    Hi there,
I have a copy of Final Cut Pro 3 that has been sitting redundant for about two years. When I first got it (around 2002 i think) i registered it etc...
I would like to reinstall it on my mac now but I have lost all the packaging, incl serial number, registration details etc...
Is there somewhere at Apple I can contact to retrieve my serial number and registration details?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer,
    Ewan.
Imac Flat panel   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Final Cut Pro 3

The only possibility that I'm aware of would be to contact Apple and provide reliable proof of purchase. Otherwise I'd say you're hosed.
Your software serial numbers are much more important to keep up with than the discs themselves. It's a good idea to record them in a database, backed-up to an off-site server or stored in a safe deposit box.
Since you still have the install discs, you might consider doing the crossgrade while Apple's offer is still in effect: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade

  • Final Cut Pro X File Management Issues

    I have several issues
    1. Does anyone know if it is possible to import from camera to the standard Mac file system?  I can't see a way to avoid importing media in the FCP library and I definitely DON"T want any of my media files in the FCP library.
    2. Also I know I can copy the media files out of FCP back into the file system but I am not sure how to delete the FCP copy and re-point everything to the media I have stored in a proper file structure on a specific media disk.
    3. It doesn't seem to be possible to have FCP default new libraries to a media drive - it only wants to create them on the boot drive and the library has to be moved manually.  Am I missing something?
    4. Backup is an issue now - it looks like a change to any component within a library will trigger a backup of the whole library - it certainly does with the backup software I am using, and who knows what Time Machine does with FCP libraries... (but Time Machine DOES appear to delete files without notice when it runs out of space, so it is not suitable for any environment where permanent data retention is an issue - so beware...)
ps: don't EVER use the "move to library" function.  If it crashes you won't get a reason, you can't undo or recover, and the originals may be deleted even though the media never made it to the other library.  This is not good...

Hi Tom:  It was "Move Event to Library" that crashed, deleting the media from the originating library but not copying it to the new library.
I lot of my issues are down to lack of familiarity with the new interface after migrating from the old Final Cut; manuals which are incomplete or in error; courseware created in earlier versions of Pro X and which have not been updated, and what I regard as counter-intuituive defaults and assumptions by the Apple development team.  I spend a lot of time searching for answers:  For instance I spent at least an hour searching in the manual and on the net for a way to extract or move the media from an FCP library.  I came up with nothing.  It would never have occurred to me to search for the term "consolidate".
Another thing that caused me an issue was that I copied a library from one drive to the other to create a backup before I started trying to regularise the media locations in the original library.  I changed the name of the backed up library in file manager.  When I open it, FCP still uses the old name - hence a library which is opened on one disk and appears to point to data on another.  In fact I hadn't noticed that there were two libraries of the same name open at the same time in FCP - the apparently duplicated library was in fact the backup library on the other disk which was renamed in file manager but not in FCP.
In iTunes and Aperture, which both use this bundled library approach, you can only open one library at a time.  FCP is different - and I have no problem with this, but any user familiar with the other products would assume, as I did, that FCP worked the same way.  That it does not gives rise to the possibility of confusion.
FCP is a very complex piece of software.  That means it is impossible to make it easy for a first timer to understand - an experienced Final Cut user has to unlearn as much as he or she has to learn - and all this places much greater reliance on the manuals.  The writers of the manuals need to try and put themselves in the heads of their users and make sure that their TOC, Index and terminology corresponds to the thinking of the user - not the new terms they have created for the new version (e.g.: "consolidate media" - which means extract media from the library and move it into the file system, but who would know?)
In an environment where the file sizes are enormous; a library may contain several hundred clips and audio tracks organised in various events and projects; FCP can crash and "disappear" media; the manual is hard to search and the software behaves in an unexpected manner (library names in FCP do not necessarily correspond to the actual name of the library on disk and multiple copies of a library can all be open at the same time, with the same name) this all creates a great deal of stress.  One mistake and a great deal of work can be lost irretrievably.
However, with your advice, I have consolidated the media files from my largest library and confirmed that the library holds only the metadata now.  However, the new file organisation is unusable, so I will now need to change the file names and reorganise them into subfolders that make sense to me - I guess I will find out if this breaks FCP's links.  At the same time I have to figure out which files in the original file structure correspond to the newly extracted files so that I only have a single set.
My big mistake was to copy the files into the library in the first place.  This is the default, and also recommended on the Lynda courseware (which was created on an earlier version of FCP).  Since most of my existing files were imported in the old version of FCP prior to the upgrade (so already on disk), this meant creating duplicates of all files initially. However, all the newer files are only in the libraries and not in the file system - reconciling this now is tricky.   Since I retrieve SD cards on my notebook in the field and then copy to my Mac Pro, some of the new files have ended up in the file system and not in the library.  I am yet to find out whether FCP will automatically pick up new files added directly to the file system, or whether they have to be "imported" through FCP before FCP can see them.
The overhead of all this duplication is enormous and the inconsistencies tricky, and it is only now that I understand better how FCP Pro X works (and that it can lose stuff) that I now realise I have to undo all of this and move the media back into file manager and out of the libraries.
If you have to transition to a new, and radically different, version in the middle of a project you really need to understand all the implications.  I did not.  And now that I do, it is difficult, stressful and time consuming to sort out.
If I were able to go back and give myself some advice it would be to ignore the defaults, create logical and sensible file structures for all your media, keep all media out of the libraries and use the file structure to force FCP to organise your clips in a logical manner so that you don't then have to go through and laboriously assign keywords to organise them in FCP.
I don't know if the way I work is very different to other film-makers.  This is a doco - typically around 5% of what is shot will make it into the final program, and I double that because I use three cameras a lot of the time.  That's about 40 hours of HD plus WAV audio files.  Some of the clips are an hour in length and impossible to synch between the cameras until they are chopped up and new combined clips created - this is very laborious!  An hour of HDD is about 400GB (more if I shoot raw) - so there will be about 2TB of data associated with this doco by the time I finish shooting.  In an interview I record a separate audio track - and I generally use this as the master track since it is the only clip which can be guaranteed to run for the full duration.  But FCP Pro X assumes that the master track will be a video file and it is not possible to add an audio file to the timeline first.  I found a workaround - but, again, I am fighting FCP and the developer's preconceived ideas about how people might use this software.
Apart from the doco itself various other projects use the same media - but I don't want these projects cluttering up the doco library which is already cluttered enough.  If the media is in the library I have to copy clips to other libraries for these other projects, leading to more duplication.  Its another reason to move the media out of the library and another indication that FCP was not really designed for large projects.
Even just within a single library, file management is unsuited to the volume of files I use.  For reasons known only to themselves, the FCP developers have used a very specific view of the file organisation - and its not the view I use in file manager (which is the column view).  That makes using the file management in FCP very cumbersome - but its essential if you have a large number of clips.  My smallest library takes 30 minutes to copy from one Thunderbolt2 disk to another, so creating a backup before changing things in a library is not a trivial event.
Also, the keyword process is clumsy and, I think, poorly conceived but it is the only way to organise clips if you haven't created a file structure prior to import.  I haven't yet figured out how to erase the keywords I used for one event so that I can reassign the keywords for use in another event.  But I assume that means that if I go back to the first event, I will have to put all the keywords back in - or ignore the shortcut keys and type them manually (which is necessary for much of the time anyway because there are only 9 - a good indication of the size of the projects for which this software was designed).  Also, oddly, there is no shortcut key that I can find for turning on/off the keyword window - which is annoying because it takes up a lot of screen real estate).  It is issues like this that leave the impression that FCP has been conceived as a kind of iMovie + and that it just isn't architected for real-world proper film making.  It can be bent to that, and it has some nice features, but I find myself fighting it a lot of the time.
After all of this I can't find a reason why Apple would create library "files" anyway.  What advantage does this provide over the standard file system?  What are the implications for backups?  (If you are backing up incrementally only the components within a library then how can you be sure any version of the actual library file is current?  And if not, then is any minor change to any file in the library going to trigger a full backup of everything - (in this case 1TB+)?  And how does this differ between various backup options?  Again, assuming FCP users are mostly making home movies, with small file sizes and using Time Machine then a library concept might make sense.  But that is iMovie thinking.  And that Apple have implemented a "move to library" function without any transactional integrity (no deletions should be made until the successful copy is confirmed) further underpins the non-professional positioning of this product.
I hope it improves with age...
But thanks again for your help - it was timely and very much appreciated.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Timeline Sync Issue

I can't pin-point exactly when it started, but over the past couple months I have had an issue with the audio playing out of sync from the video in the timeline.  I'm using DSLR footage that I've ran through MPEG Streamclip, to both XDCAM EX and ProRes(LT), either way the video plays out of sync.  It plays fine in the viewer window, and is in sync when scrubbing or moving through the timeline frame by frame, but as soon as I hit play the audio runs about 3 frames earlier than the video.  It exports in sync as well, so lately I've just been making do, but its very frustrating.
Working with the same footage on an iMac with half the power of this Mac Pro, there's no lag so it really shouldn't be because the computer's not powerful enough.  And while working with footage that was recorded directly to Prores, things run perfectly in sync.  I am completely baffled, any ideas?
    Thanks.

Not sure about the decklink, but when you send video out through a card, the audio ought to follow it.  There's a certain latency when looking at the computer monitor and hearing the audio from an external source.

  • Final cut pro x export/sound issue

I'm trying to export WITHOUT sound but sound always is included. How to fix? Method:
Share; Master File (Export); Settings; Video Only; H.264
    I need a solution now.
Please be specific. thanks in advance

That sounds like a good thing, doesn't it?
It is almost never a good thing if a program "lies" to you. It says you are going to replace a file with a new one. You click "Replace". And silently the program "decides" it is not worth it, because it will be the same. At the very least, you should be warned that no export would take place.
And it is even worse if, say, you exported without audio, and suddenly realized it that was not what you wanted. You export again, making sure you selected Video and Audio. You confidently click "Replace", and copy the file you *thought* you had just created, and send it, or upload it somewhere. You won't have replaced anything, and will submit a video without audio, when you explicitly "exported" it with audio.

  • Final Cut Pro losing filters?

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro from Tiger to Leopard. I was running Final Cut Pro 5.1 academic. Before I upgraded, I was in the process of editing a video. Parts of the video used the filters "Light Rays" and "Directional Blur." When I go to work on the video now, it tells me that it is unable to load "Light Rays" and "Directional Blur." When I checked for them in the effects tab, they are not there. It won't let me render anything until they are reinstalled. What do I do? Thanks!

    Mr. Amazing,
If you've not gathered yet, it helps amazingly so to be very accurate and concise both in vernacular and actions. If you've not gathered, updating is nothing like a fresh installation: words simply cannot be bandied about if you expect prompt, accurate and concise help. It took how many posts to get to this part? Mr. S. is very knowledgeable and his patience, although deeper than mine, does have boundaries, amazingly enough.
There's another amazing feature of the forum and that is the little used and very hidden Search function. There it is, in the upper right hand corner of this page. It can be very useful and a great boon, provided it's used.
The most amazing aspect of this forum, however, is the boundless patience of it's users and readers for your query has been asked and answered, no matter what it is, probably a thousand times before. In your case, Mr. S. provided an answer to your problem very early in the thread, I would advise rereading it and taking his advice to heart.

  • Any word about final cut pro and closed captioning?

Has anyone heard any news of Final Cut Pro dealing with the issue of closed caption for their software?

Close Captioning is done through/with DVDSP, not FCP. Not good news if you want to deliver on tape-- but great if you deliver on DVD<<</div>
    Todd,
Not exactly true ... While they may seem to serve a similar function, Closed Captioning and Subtitling are two distinctly different things. Subtitles can be used on DVD-Video and turned on or off by the user via the remote (or defaulted to on by the author). Subtitles are also used by film makers releasing their films in foreign language countries.
On the other hand, Closed Captioning is encoded into line 21 of an NTSC video signal. CC is received and decoded by TV sets (required on ALL TV sets sold in the U.S.) as mandated by FCC ruling several years ago and more recently required by law under provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Since it's inception, CC inclusion was a very expensive process and remained in the realm of specialized service companies for many years. With the recent passing of the FCC's deadline for almost ALL broadcast programing (with few exceptions) to be closed-captioned, I would think/hope that NLE vendors, like Apple, Avid and others would incorporate CC capabilities into their programs. There is one other CC software solution for Macs that I'm aware of available from: http://www.ccaption.com/

    AH...good.
There is no limit on the times you can install it from the DVDs. There's just a limit as to being able to run it on multiple machines AT THE SAME TIME. If your old computer dies, or you sell it (please reformat the drive so they don't get FCP for free), then you can install on a new computer fine.  And you are allowed to install on (1) desktop and (1) laptop at the same time as well...but only use it on one machine at any given time. Meaning you can use it on the desktop at work, and then when away from the office, on your laptop.
Long story short...you can install it fine without any issues.

  • Is my issue with Final Cut Pro or my Macbook pro?

I'm going to try to be as thorough as possible in explaining my situation because I can't figure this problem out and it's exhausting me. I have an early 2011 macbook pro with the 2.2 ghz processor. I upgraded to 16gb of ram almost a year ago. I've been using Final Cut Pro 7 on this computer for several years now without issue and have made no setting changes that would prompt my problems. A few months ago my battery decided to stop holding a charge and now just registers 0%. Around the same time, while editing a short video my computer began behaving like it was overheating. It would crash, restart, crash and then restart again. After I did a disk and permissions repair it began to work normally again and I haven't had any more crashing issues. Around this period of time I began noticing that when my computer turns on it doesn't register the correct time and date. Given a few moments it corrects itself, but for some strange reason it was doing that every time.
Anyway, around that time I tried to upgrade to Mavericks and experienced an issue during installation because my hard drive was apparently damaged in some way and the installation couldn't be completed. I restored my previous OS and tried to carry on as I was with the damaged hard drive for as long as I could. I was still able to do everything I needed on the computer. I could still edit videos with Final Cut. I could still browse the internet. I could still stream Netflix.
About a month ago Final Cut stopped working. I could open the program, start a new project and import media files, but when I dragged them into the timeline, they just stuttered (audio would play but video would lag and then jump several frames then lag and jump frames). At the time I assumed this was because my hard drive finally gave up, but I was still able to do other functions like browse the internet and stream basketball games with nba league pass (granted they weren't crisp hd - on a side note, netflix was also behaving oddly. when I would browse through my list, it wouldn't stop scrolling when I moved the mouse away.) so I assumed the hard drive was my issue.
I just replaced my hard drive with an ssd (crucial m500) and upgraded to mavericks (10.9.1) and now I am having the same issues. Netflix behaves fine. Basketball games stream fine. My battery is still dead (obviously that wasn't going to change). I get the wrong date and time for a minute, but I'm thinking that's battery related now. But Final Cut still lags to the point where I can't use it. Video clips also won't render. I thought this might be an issue with the Final Cut program so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but it still did the same thing. Assuming I hadn't correctly/completely uninstalled it, I downloaded HitFilm 2 (an editing program that had a free download promotion at the time), figuring using a different program, if i could edit video with it, then my issue is with Final Cut and not my computer. Unfortunaely, I'm having the same lagging issues with HitFilm as I was with Final Cut.
I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Sorry if this was a rambling post, but I wanted to get as much of the background out there as possible, should it provides anyone with a clue as to what is the issue here. Does anyone have any idea what could be at fault here? I'm stumped.

  • Final Cut Pro issues in Lab environment

Ok so this one has me completely buggered.
I manage about 6 Mac Pros in a small TV Studio/Editing lab at a university. The Mac Pros are managed with an Xserve running server 10.6.2, using Open Directory for account management. All network accounts use a network Home folder, so any machine can use the same account and settings. The same server also manages a 25 machine iMac lab environment.
Each semester, we wipe the Mac Pros clean an reinstall the OS and Final Cut Studio. Last semester, the Mac Pros were upgraded to 10.6, and Studio 3 and we had no issues. This semester, a fresh installation of 10.6 was installed, as well as fresh Studio 3.
Now this is the problem we are having. Final Cut Pro 7 will not correctly create .fcp project files when users are logged in with their network server accounts. If you save the project to the desktop, or anywhere else in the Home folder, it creates a .fcp file, seemingly normal. But after the project is closed, the .fcp will not open again. Further more, a quick file size check shows the .fcp files are zero KB. Opening with Textedit shows an empty document, not even a single bit of data shows up.
But, Final Cut Pro 7 will create .fcp files perfectly fine on the local disk, or firewire drives. Local accounts also work fine. This problem only happens on network homes.
This is severely hampering the workflow for students using these editing stations, as they can't use their network home folders to save any data in Final Cut.
The strangest part, is it worked fine last semester. The same machines were running 10.6 and Studio 3, and the server has not been changed at all.
    Any clues?

    No problem Tom!
I didn't checked before but i solved thanks to your post... for some strange reason, the French language that i don't use, appeared in my language preference pane. I just added the English, and moved/deleted the French after it and FCP became English again!

  • Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express -- Format issues?

    Hi,
I'm shooting a project on a Panasonic HVX-200A, and my cameraman is going to import the footage to his Final Cut Pro station. He's then going to transfer the FCP footage and data over to an external hard drive, which I am going to use to edit the film using Final Cut Express.
Will there be any formatting issues if I bring the data from Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express?
    Thanks!!
    Sameer Ketkar

Clip files can be easily imported into FCE if they are QuickTime DV-NTSC/DV-PAL or Apple Intermediate Codec (720p30, 1080i50/60). If they are other formats/codecs they should be converted to DV or AIC before importing into FCE.
FCPro project files cannot be imported into FCExpress.
I'd suggest a trial run before committing the project to this workflow.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 issues

I have just recently upgraded to FCP 7 from 5.1 and I am having multiple problems with it. The main issue is that when I batch capture from My Panasonic DVX100 using 24p advanced pull-down the video on my computer after capture is out of sync by half a second to a second out of sync with the audio. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Final cut studio multiple times first with app zapper and more recently with FCS Remover and it still has multiple issues that make final cut pro largely unusable. So Does any one have any advice as to go about fixing it?

Used to be, Apple included the DVX100 sync fixer file on the install disc. Did you look to see if it's still included or not? Here is an explanation from back in the FCP5 days:
