Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 Sequence Settings - Importing from a Canon XL2

Under Sequence Settings and the Advanced tab, should I leave the Compressor Quality tab at HIGH or BEST? I have heard that it's best to keep it at High but I just wanted to make sure of it. Also, since the Canon XL2 is a progressive scan camera (right?) should I lave the Scan Mode to INTERLACED or PROGRESSIVE and should I leave the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 even though I am shooting in 16:9? Thanks so much for your help.

You recorded DV/NTSC 16:9 Anamorphic (or DV/PAL depending on where you live)
That's what your Easy preset settings should be.
And no, the camera does not record progressive. It records 29.97 interlaced - like all DV cams recording to tape do. If the setting said 24fps, the camera inserted pull down in the 29.97 image stream. Unless you need to go back to film, simply edit the material in a 29.97 timeline.

  • FINAL CUT PRO 5.1.4 Sync (Drifting) Issues shot with Canon XL2

So basically I am still having trouble with audio sync drifting and I captured the footage correctly using the 2:3:3:2 pull down 24p and 48khz. Any suggestions anyone else can give me? The last fella suggested that I should CHANGE the speed of the audio track to match up with the video track but I don't want a percentage of change in the way the audio sounds like even though it is very SMALL. Any suggestions I would very much appreciate. Thanks.

Butting in where might not be helpful…
The Canon DV and FW protocols are weird.
Here's what a buddy of mine has been doing for many years:
    a. Place the long clip in the timeline.
    b. Unlink the audio and video tracks in the timeline.
    c. Select the audio clip and scrub till the end of the sound is reached. Hopefully this is eaisly matched to the video clip. Trim to that point.
    d. Select the video clip and match the outpoint to the same frame of action (helps if there's a specific sound like a clap or a notebook being closed or someone's voice). Now choose Speed and wirte down the exact length of the clip.
    e. Select the audio clip and choose Speed and enter the exact time of the video clip. Render.
    f. Relink the two tracks which are now exactly the same length.

I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

  • I am trying out Final Cut Pro X and trying desperately to import a project from iMovie 11 (version 9.0.9). There is no export to FCPX in iMovie 11 nor is there import from iMovie in FCPX.

    Can someone please help me?
I am trying out Final Cut Pro X on a 30 day trial. So far so good.
I am now trying desperately to import a project from iMovie 11 (version 9.0.9) into FCPX.
I have read multiple posts on this subject and they all recommend File/import/ from iMovie project in FCPX
However there is NO such option under File/import in FCPX - nor is there an option to export to FCPX in iMovie 11
    Can anyone please enlighten me.

The current version of FCPX does not work with that version of iMovie. You need version 10.0.3, which allows you to send a project to FCP.

  • Final Cut Pro X locked up on an important project!

I've spend about 60 hours ediitng a project for an important client, and when adjusting the glow on a title, the accursed beach ball started spinning and wouldn't quit! THis was yesterday. I had just deleted my backup copy, and was planning another, but TOO LATE!
Someone please advise. I've rebooted, duplicated onto another drive.
I can open FCPX, and the project will play, if I don't open it.
    Thanks.

Never delete backup copies, as we now know.
    http://www.fcproxuniversity.com/FCPro_X_University/Extra_Credit/Entries/2013/4/3 _Carbon_Copy_Cloner_For_FCP_X.html
Some things to try.  First, go to the Project Library, highlight (don't open) the Project, and in the File menu, delete it's render files.  Next, go to each Event you are pulling media from in the Event Library and delete any render files in them, also.
If that doesn't do it, get "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (free) and use it to trash FCP X's pref files.
If that doesn't do it, move the "Final Cut Pro" app from the Applications folder into the Trash.  Then launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, click the "Install" button for FCP X.
I have a feeling deleting render files may do the trick, but you never know.

  • Final Cut Pro - Long Install Process after clicking "buy" from Trial

I just clicked "Buy" on my FCP X trial version and now it has been installing for quite a long time.
Why does it do that? I have the most recent version of the trial version.
Or is the trial version a different software package that will be overwritten by the purchase?
I just want to avoid having suddenly two FCP X installations on my computer.

    Thanks, Ian.
I really had two Final Cut Pro installations of 10.1.3 on my hard drive, each 3.38 GB.
One was the trial, one the real thing.
When I clicked the symbol in the dock, the trial opened up and told me it was expired. So I dragged the symbol out, deleted the trial, and dragged the symbol of the real thing into the dock, and now it works.

When I initially open Final Cut, it says 'reading .....' and it reads the projects and events as usual(from the hard drive) and then it opens the window, and for about 5 seconds all my events are open and listed, but then I just dissapears and it only reads from the internal hard drive. I have tried everything from restarting but I have not reintstalled the program.

  • Workflow final cut pro to logic 8: keep the volumes from fcp

    Hi,
does anyone know a good workflow between fcp and logic 8 ?
It should work like the roundtrip to soundtrack.
The main problem is, that when sending the sequence with premixed audio (via volume keyframes)
to logic 8 (no matter if xml 1-4, omf, automatic duck xml, automatic duck fcp export)
the volume data is not transfered the right way, i have to start mixing from scratch.
so i still prefer soundtrack for final mix allthough great logic studio is here...
    can anybody help me out?
    Thank you

it appears that if you check only "include crossfades"(during the fcp omf export) it does retain those once in logic, but if you check both "levels" and "crossfades", nothing gets retained. strange.

  • Best quicktime export settings - compression - from final cut pro

i have done this for a while. still don't know.
to translate an ntsc 24p project onto a dvd, which export settings (compressor)do you use in final cut pro? i use current settings, and once i am done with idvd ("best quality") it just doesn't look high quality. is this an idvd question?
    powermac g5 2.7 ghz dual   Mac OS X (10.4)   2.5 gb ram

    I didn't know iDVD could handle 24fps project. Or is it a 29.97 (23.98 with a pulldown).
Best quality in iDVD just means that it works on it longer to compress it more to fit more on disk. Have you tried Best Speed version?

  • Final Cut Pro Settings For AVCHD Canon HFS100

    Hi friends,
I am new to Final cut pro and digital video. I just purchased a Canon HFS 100 and am shooting in 30p and am going to be editing on FCP 6.0.1. From Easy Setup on FCP I have changed the FORMAT to HD, RATE to 29.97 and USE to DVCPRO HD -1080p30. Will this be the most favorable settings if I want to make high quality HD videos for the web. Or should I leave it on FCP Easy Setup default which is FORMAT: all formats, RATE: all rates and USE: Custom Setup.
    Thanks.

    Hi Khorsani,
    welcome to the arena.
Your version of FCP was the [first one|http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Pro_6.0_rn/index.html#appleref%3Adoc%3Auid%3ATempBookID-ReplacedWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-CH1-SW59 ] to offer some support for AVCHD.
You want to use Log&Transfer (FCP main menu>File or ShiftCommand8)to convert your footage to ProRes or AIC, which are editable formats that FCP likes.

Please note that AVCHD support was improved with following FCP 6.0.x versions so you may want to update your current version if something does not work.

If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a

use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.

Final Cut Pro is the premium choice for any Mac video editing, and it is widely used by Mac users now. Import unsupported MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express
Summary:If you are looking for the best way to transcode MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos to ProRes MOV for FCP 7/X and FCE, you can follow this post, it has offered best solutions for editing MPEG videos on Mac in Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express.
    Cases:
The following are two problems when some users import MPEG-1/MPEG-2 to Final Cut:
"I am trying to import MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X. I have the raw files from a Sony Handicam HDR-SR5 as well as raw files from an Sony Handicam MDR-CX560. These files were recorded as MPEG-2 files and copied from the camera hard drives (entire folders were copied containind the MPEG-2 fies) to a local hard drive on my computer. Final Cut Pro X does not recognize the files and will not import them. I have tried to use Compressor to conver the fies. I am using the very latest version that touts being able to export to Final Cut X format. I don't see that option anywhere in the settings."
    Question:
Is there a way to get MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X without having to convert them?
    Answer:
Don't try to work with (highly compressed) MPEG 2 in FCP X. Use software to convert to ProRes 422 first, it's best codec for final cut pro or final cut express. Life will be much easier for you if you do. ProRes 422 is roughly between 5 and 8 times bigger than native camera footage - sometimes as much as 10 times, I believe, but it's well worth it for editing, effects and playback quality. The time required depends largely on your processor power but 30 mins sounds realistic.
    Software you need:
Pavtube HD Video Converter for Mac
This software can convert MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Apple ProRes 422 codec for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Expr editing without rendering.
    Step by step guide:
    1. Download and install the best MPEG1/MPEG2 to ProRes Converter and launch it to add your videos to it.
    2. Choose output format. Click on the “Format”> Final Cut Pro, Apple PreRes 422(HQ), Apple PreRes 422, Apple ProRes 422(LT), etc are all the proper choice for you.
    3. Click "Settings" to adjust the parameters as you want, like Video Codec, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, bit rate, channels. Set the video frame rate as 30fps, video size as 1920*1080 will be better.
    4. Click Convert button to start MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut friendly Apple ProRes 422 for native editing on Mac OS X.
    5. When the conversion ends, you can run the Final Cut Pro and click File --> Import --> Files to import the resulted MOV files and edit them in FCP easily, you can follow this import video to fcp guide.
From the steps above, I think you got the point to convert and import MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to Apple ProRes 422 for Final Cut editing, please have a try, this software will solve you MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 importing and editing problems, and then you can import and use your MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 in Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Express on Mac without any problems.

  • Do I need Final Cut Pro HD when I have Final Cut Studio?

I will be starting my second project on my new mac and using final cut pro. It will be an instructional DVD. This is my first posting and I guess my first attempt at reaching out (baby steps).
I will be borrowing an HD camera (some consumer grade). My Question is do I need Final Cut HD when I have Final Cut Studio installed. I notice Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 has HD import and export settings.
Also, since I have mentioned my project is there any quick reference ideas for a learn to play an instrument DVD, CD or anything.
And lastly as I wonder off my thread a little. Is this Discussion forum my quickest way of getting an answer, I mean is there anyone who will let me bug them from time to time?

Forgot to welcome you to the forum... Welcome.
Before you jump into this project you may want to do some research. The format you are talking about is HDV, highly compressed and some would say difficult to edit with. A search here on HDV will give you plenty to read and probably point you to some interesting articles.
Might also consider why you want to shoot HD at all right now since you will most likely be going to Standard Def for distribution.
You'll find that if you just check in and browse the topics every day or so you'll pick up lots of good information (and probably a few laughs)
If you're looking for examples for this type of project, just hop down to your local music store. Most have "How To" DVD's for sale.
    Good Luck
