Final Cut Pro 5 playback - dropped frames

Just completed a complex 1 hour timeline and dropped frames occur after a matter of seconds. Clips running in viewer - same thing. Tried to burn a dvd: Quick Time movie conversion produces a badly fragmented result and the FCP compressor hangs in 'waiting'mode. Both external hard drive (e-sata link) and Mac's drive have loads of space and I've tried all the tricks in Lisa Brenneis' book. Any ideas, anyone?

Brian ,
What format is your original media and what format are you exporting to in quicktime conversion.
A few more details needed please.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 export drops frames

I exported a video from Final Cut Pro 7 to a Quicktime .mov file.  The file plays fine on a mac, but when I try to play it on a pc it drops frames throughout the video.  I have other .mov files on this pc also exported from fcp7 that play just fine. Please advise.  Thanks.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 & Dropped Frames..Please Help

I am a wedding videographer and have been using Final Cut Pro with no problems for several video projects. My most current project however problems arise. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.9 with 512 MB of Ram on a G5 1.8 Single. When I try importing video from my last wedding when I capture it I always am getting a message saying dropped frames were present. I have tried 2 different camcorders, 2 different firewire cables, defragmenting my hard drive and still nothing but dropped frames messages. I also have tried importing video from a previous wedding with no luck. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thanks

FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 are incompatible...known issue.

Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to get FCP 4.5 working again under Mac OS 10.4.9
Apple's solution: Archive and install the OS again, this time updating only to 10.4.8.
Another COOL solution: Samba2007 posted that a friend solved the FCP 4.5 + OSX 10.4.9 capture issue adding the Capture Scratch folder to the Privacy of Spotlight in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4417320#4417320
OlSchoolCutter tried with SUCCESS (see post in that thread).
Then follow these stepe and try (it's free!):
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight's list.

  • Final Cut Pro and EditShare - Dropped Frames

    Hey,
My Company just got a new EditShare File Sharing server. It's a 5 Rack with 24 drives, for a total of 18TB of space. The problem is, when we're trying to capture straight to the ES (which has 8 RAIDS) there are Dropped Frame Errors appearing. We've tried turning the Internet off, and even re-organized the connection preferences so the ES is the first to be refreshed, but we're still having dropped frames. Info:
    Final Cut Pro - 5.1.2
Capturing from a DVCPRO 50 Deck thru Firewire
    EditShare - 4.0.2
    G5 Mac with OS 10.4.7
note Didn't get so many dropped frames when using LaCie Drives. Could be connection speed or not enough broadband. Any Suggestions? Thanks.

I believe it's fiber, but not sure. We're also checking because the Gigabit switch has 3 settings, 10/100/1000 gigabits, so it could be at a lower setting, and that's causing a backup in the broadband speed. We're also noticing that the transfer rate from our External HDs (which we were capturing to before) to the ES was slower than anticipated.
Anyone else find this problem with an EditShare or File Sharing server?
    Just checked, it's CAT6 cables.

  • Final Cut Pro -- Preview window drops frames

this is quite annoying, basically the preview window drops frames and is quite slow? It seems the program window is unaffected. I have my local drive as the source drive and an external firewire drive as the scratch disk... Any further thoughts?

  • Animation. How do I import still images in final cut pro x (from dragon frame) duration 3 frames pr. image?

Animation. How do I import still images in final cut pro x (from dragon frame) duration 3 frames pr. image? We have allready tried to set stillimages duration in preferences to 0,08 sek, but it does not have any effect!

You can drag your images to the timeline, select all, ctrl-d and set the duration to 3 frames by typing 3 and enter.
Or you can use Quicktime 7 to "open image sequence", select the desired duration, export your animation to quicktime and import that into FCP X for further editing.

  • Final Cut Pro Video Playback not in Widescreen for Anamorphic Material

I have a Panasonic DVX-100B hooked up to my computer and am running Final Cut Pro. I shot everything in the anamorphic squeeze mode. When I play this material back through my camera (which displays the material as widescreen because I forced it on the camera menu) it doesn't playback on the TV in widescreen, it stretches it back out vertically. Is there a setting in Final Cut that will send the signal as a 16:9 signal to the TV, so that it will understand it correctly?

No, FCP does not send out an anamorphic flag via firewire. What I mean is, it sends out the video to your deck simply as 720x480, without telling the deck (and therefore the monitor, as well) if that is supposed to be a 16:9 or 4:3 image. In order to monitor with the correct ratio, you'll need to have a monitor that can correct for aspect ratio.
If you're working on a pro monitor, it should have a 16:9 button (or menu setting, at least). Some recent - as in the last 4-5 years - consumers TVs also have an anamorphic squeeze feature that will compress the image vertically. If you've got a 16:9 TV, you'll need to use the stretch feature (of all things) to correct your preview image.
All that said, I'm guessing you fall into the last camp: you're previewing out to a consumer TV that cannot do vertical compression? If so, your only alternative is to nest your anamorphic sequence in a 4:3 one for preview purposes. Of course, this is needlessly cumbersome (and you run into the dreaded issues with nests failing to update every now-and-then) and requires more CPU horsepower. Either that or edit with the distorted image...
Or are you in a whole 'nother situation?

  • Final cut pro 3 playback

I know i am behind, but i am in the middle of a project using final cut pro 3. i have 13 gig of memory and 1 gig ram on a G4 and now while editing, my clips play like in slow motion or stop altogether. i don't think it is a memory problem. any suggestions?

i have 13 gig of memory and 1 gig ram on a G4<<</div>
Do you mean you have 13gb of space left on your hard drive? It's a good practice to keep 10% free sapce on all drives, especially your boot drive. Things can start going wonky if you have less than that.

  • Newbie : Final Cut Pro Loads then drops.

    Hi,
Whenever I load FCP, it goes through the basic screens but then just drops to the desktop without loading the normal FCP screens.
I have searched and I found the post saying 'remove library / fcp and folder' which works for the next time you load. Once you set your prefs again, the next time you try and reload, it crashes as the first time.
This is a brand new mac and the only external software loaded is the Final Cut Studio box set.
Any tips please! All patches up to date 5.03 FCP etc.

Thanks, missed the heading, that will teach me to look first hehe!

  • Final Cut Pro 7 exporting adds frames before transitions.

When I export a movie from my sequence the movie adds one or two blank black frames before the transition starts. It does not happen when I render the video out and watch it (preview). It only happens when I export the movie. There are NO breaks in my time code and every video has plenty if handles on either side. Any ideas on how to fix this or why it is happening would be greatly appreciated!
Key Points - Only happens when I export the movie and never when I am previewing it. There are NO breaks in my time code.
    -Martin

Thanks, it was actually a mixture of your two questions let allowed me to figure the issue out. I was exporting it at 25FPS while the sequence setting was at 30FPS. I bumped up the export setting to the 30FPS and it plays through the transitions just fine.
It was a user error! :-D
    Thanks guys.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Slow Render, Frame size changing

I have a sequence open with the following properties:
    29.97 fps frame size: 720 X 480, Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Audio Rate: 32.0 KHZ
The Clips I'm editing with have the following properties:
    29.97 fps, 854X480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 32.0 KHZ
Everything was going smoothly until this one clip I dragged in with the exact same properties changed it's frame size. There had been two perfect black bars on the top and bottom of all the shots up until this one clip that changed frame size and covered up those black bars. It's also taking forever to render any small edit I do with that troublesome clip. I was thinking it might have to do with the difference in frame sizes from the sequence properties and the clip properties. I tried to change that by clicking: 1. Sequence 2. Settings.... and changing the width and heigth but it wouldn't let me. Anyone got some tips?

Where did you get that footage?  854x480 is a display size.  It sounds like your footage was ORIGINALLY anamorphic DV.  Which is actually 720x480.  You would need to tell FCP that the footage is anamorphic, either on ingest, or by checking the anamorphic column in the browser-- EXCEPT that somehow the clips are baked in to a non standard size-- like someone exported them at the anamorphic display size.  You would do this for example if you were making a file for projection or computer use, where the anamorphic flag would not necessarily be recognized.  But you normally would not do this if you were still working with the footage in an editing program.
You might also note that the top clip above is set to less than 100% scale.
What happens if you select all in your sequence and Edit>remove attributes>basic motion and distort?
Quite a mess you've built for yourself, or someone handed you.

  • Final cut pro 6 is dropping files, I would like to know how-to set-up storgage free agent ?

I have been unable to successfully edit my videos, I understand about looking in the easy setup, to match the video been edited,. However the FCP tells me that it is not picked properly and if It can pick the proper format. I click yes. it plays through my only-- two clips, but when I add an effect it drops them.    I have a free agent seagate with 449.3 GB of free storage. I would love, appreciate guidence for the setting-up. If this does not work I work like to use the hard-drice on my PC if that is compatable!
I feel as through my computer space is limited. 109.43 GB of free storage on the Mac.

So I went into system settings, under the scratch disk and set my memory to save in the free agent (external) hard drive. I set my thumbnamil, autosave, all of it on my free agent hard drive. audio, video, all under the (tab) scratch disk, set to save to free agent.

  • Final Cut Pro 3 playback issues

My sister bought a copy of FCP3 seconhand and cannot seem to get it to play any video. If she tries to preview a video file, it will start playing audio, then 2 or 3 seconds later, play the video, and then everything will suddenly stop.
She is trying to use it on an iMac G5 1.6GHz with 1.25GB of ram running OS X 10.5.
FCP3 is fully up to date as is OS X.
From everything I've read, the machine should be able to handle it

Hi - So you are saying that you have captured DV, and cannot play that captured clip back in the FCP Viewer (not the Canvas)?
Control-click on the suspect clip in the bin and select Reveal in Finder. Control click on the actual file and select Open With > Quicktime player. Does the file play correctly directly in the Quicktime Player?
Go back to FCP, and Control -click on the suspect clip. Select Item Properties > Format which will open a window that will show the clip properties:
Either post a screen shot or report what the Clip Properties are,
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Pro X Playback.

When I am editing my GoPro files they do not fill the screen. When I export there are black spaces on the outsides of my clip. Does anyone know why this is? When I edited in iMovie there wasnt this problem but now in FCP X there is. Please help.

You picked the worst possible format to shoot. GoPro are a bunch of wankers when it comes to producing video. Neat little cameras. Complete jerks when it comes to encoding.
If this material is really 4:3, if it's not anamorphic, then you're basically in deep doodoo. The only thing you can edit with this media is standard def. You can also edit in 1280x720 with pillarboxing and crop the media using Compressor. If it's anamorphic then you can convert it to 1280x720.
The audio has to be converted to uncompressed 48k. AAC is complete crap for embedded audio in video.
You can use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion.

  • Choppy Playback & Export AVCHD Final Cut Pro X

Just bought a Canon XA10. When I import the AVCHD files into Final Cut Pro X and drop them into my timeline, they play back choppy. They also play back choppy after exporting, regardless of file type. Tried optimizing and proxy, didn't make any difference. Also tried converting them to other formats (Prores, MOV, MPG2, MPG4) before importing, still play back choppy. The raw files looks fine on the camcorder and also look and play fine when you open them in Quicktime.
Is there a setting on the camcorder I need to try when recording (60i, PF30, PF24, 24P/MXP, FXP, XP+), or is there another option from within Final Cut to get the files to play back smooth?
    Thanks,
    Michael
