Final Cut Pro 7 T3 practice test
Hi all. Does anyone know if there is a practice test for the Final Cut Pro 7 T3 exam? I searched around on the Apple Web site and also my trainer could not give me an answer. Thanks.
There isn't a practice test available for the FCP7 T3 exam. If you fail the first exam you are allowed one retake for an additional fee. Consider that your test exam. If you fail the first exam and the retake you must attend the T3 course again.

Final Cut Pro 7 Practice Exam Test
I've got a guestion about apple final cut pro 7 certification. A week ago I was contacted with apple IBA Training Centre, this is an apple authorized training center in Minsk Belarus (220000), and they sad that I can get this certification test. Than I read "Final Cut Pro 7 Level On Exam Prep Guide" in which says that i can get a practice exam test for 25$ at Prometric.com but at least I can't because the practise test's code which in "Final Cut Pro 7 Level On Exam Prep Guide" is not working. This is an apple's or prometric's error? And is there any other ways to get this practice fcp 7 test?
thxmy understanding is final cut pro 7 certification is no longer available as the application has been withdrawn and termed end of life
There is a new sheme for final cut x but is totally different

Practicing using Final Cut Pro only on iBook via External Drive. Possible?
Before upgrading to a more powerful system I'd like to install FCS2 on an external drive and practice using only Final Cut Pro on my iBook (ok to laugh) My iBook specs: G4, 14", 1.42GHz, 1GB RAM, 10.4.9, 1024x768 display, 60GB. I do not plan on playing around with the other programs that are included in the suite. ie. Motion and Soundtrack pro etc. (They most likely would not work on my lil iBook.) I know in principle you are not supposed to put software on an external drive but I'm wondering if this temporary setup is even viable. I plan on using this set up for a couple months as I make my way through BASIC Final Cut Pro tutorials and to do a small practice run with a 5 minute miniDV project. I need time (about two months) to cobble money together before I upgrade to a more powerful system. Is this even possible? If so, what capacity/brand external drive should I be considering? I will also be using the external drive for media after I upgrade my system. Thanks to everyone. These posts are extremely helpful.
Mac OS X (10.4.9)
Mac OS X (10.4.1)hi there
you wont be able to install FCP to the external HDD as it wont let you, it has to be installed to the actual HDD in the machine as it uses the core system, core video, core animation, and core sound to work, you can install all the extra content on a ext HDD but not the actual application.
hope this helps -
How do I get copyright or license to show Final Cut Pro in use by a character in a film?
Hi,
I am working in a Film Production team in Brazil. We are producing a film where the main character is a film editor and he uses Apple Final Cut Pro at his work.
The film is for all ages - no restriction.
I have already written to "Copyright Permissions" but had no answer since June!
Do I need a copyright license for that?
And if I do, how do I get it from Apple?
Thank you in advance.

I am not a lawyer, but I don't see how you are infringing on Apple. Remember, most e-mails are not read or replied to. Your best course of action would be to send a priority letter to Apple's street address. They still may not reply, but it will be read.
A test that usually (but not always) works. Is your activity costing the other party money. Is your activity resulting in the other party losing sales.
If your movie is showing some guy at a desk using a companies software; it's beyond my comprehension why they would have a problem. In fact, many companies pay for “product placement”. However, I understand that Apple does not engage in this practice.
But I can assure you, every time you see someone with a Coke (and other products) in a movie the producers were probably paid.

A Case Study Question in the Use of Stills with Final Cut Pro
Believe it or not, for the last week I have been reading endlessly about pixels, resolution, aspect ratio, Photoshop resizing, the bloody battle over the usefulness of the term "dpi" in video discussions, and generally about what one should do in order to use still images in a film edited in Final Cut Pro. And yet, though I have a PhD from an Ivy League university, and can understand a lot of things, I am sorry to say I am still at a loss.
Much of the discussions of photos on forums like this one are either quite technical or broadly philosophical. But my questions are completely practical and specific. I am not a photographer or a printer, nor am I an experienced editor. I am just a fairly smart person trying to use photos in his film. So I am going to ask some specific questions and hope for specific answers, without any philosophical waffling or technical mumbo jumbo.
I have one of those HP all in one printer/fax/scanner machines. I am told this device, while not fancy, is perfectly adequate to the task. Some of my photos I scan with this device from prints. Some of them I get from other people. (I have stopped downloading photos from the web, as the quality is nearly always poor.) I have Photoshop Essentials (not Photoshop). I am making a 90-minute HDV documentary, 16x9. The doc is mostly HDV footage with a still here and there. I want to be able to move on the photos (zoom, pan, etc.). I want, obviously, for them to look good. My sense is that the work flow is: (a) scan the photo (or obtain from some source as a digital file); alter the photo in some way in Photoshop; and (b) import the photo into your FCP project.
Question #1: If I have a 6x8 print, what settings should I scan it in with -- is it possible there really is no difference between scanning in it at 72dpi and 300dpi? Is it really all about the dimensions of the image? Isn't a photo whose dimensions are enlarged in Photoshop to make it available for panning and zooming in my sequence going to look fuzzier and more pixelated if it was originally scanned at 72dpi than at 300dpi? Also: Does it matter if I save it as a jpeg or tiff? Bottom line: What settings do I use in my scanning software when I scan a photo for this purpose?
Question #2: Once I have the image file on my hard drive, I suppose I now have to load it into Photoshop Elements and do something to it. What is it exactly I am using this program for? I'm going to take a wild guess. I use PS Elements to (1) crop the photo so that it has a 16x9 aspect ratio, and (2) resize it so that I can do pans and other Ken Burnsy moves on it in FCP. Bottom line: What exactly do I do in PSE to the photo and what settings do I use to both (a) make it available for moves and (b) not injure the quality of the photo by increasing its dimensions?
(In passing, I will say that I have done experiments that show that if I increase a photo's dimensions to, say, 4000 pixels by 2000 pixels, the photo's quality definitely and obviously suffers. I don't understand how a picture can be increased in size without losing sharpness. So, what am I doing wrong? Is this a function of it having been scanned in improperly to begin with?)
Question #3: If I am obtaining a photo from an outside source -- say, a professional photographer -- what are the specifications I ask for in both a hard print and a photo file? If the former, what dimensions do I ask for? If the latter, do I specify resolution and dimensions and file type?
These are my questions. At this point, I really don't want to know WHY any of this is the way it is. I just want someone to say: "Do this; do this; and then do this."
Thank you very much.Studio X is absolutely correct; while DPI has no meaning in the video world, it often has significant meaning in scanning (and, of course, printing). If your scanning program only allows image size adjustments in DPI, then you'll have to adapt to that ... keeping in mind that the scanner's DPI setting directly relates to pixel resolution. And it is pixel resolution (not DPI) that will make all the difference in the world for images used in video. You can test this yourself by scanning an image at 1000 x 1200 @ 72 DPI and again at 1000 x 1200 at 300 DPI. They will look identical on TV or projection as long as the pixel resolution remains the same.
As an example, my Epson scanning software allows me to adjust image size by DPI or pixel resolution. Wanting to maintain the correct aspect ratio for the image area that I'm scanning, I adjust the DPI setting which in turn adjusts the pixel resolution automatically. But it doesn't work the other way around; if I adjust the pixel resolution settings manually, the DPI setting does not change. Your software may vary.
As Jim Cookman suggested, a scan setting of 300 DPI works well for most images ranging from 3 x 5 to 4 x 6 (typical snapshot size) in a DV Sequence. I may scan smaller images at 400 or 600 DPI and larger images (8 x 10 and up) at 150 DPI. Other size images fall in between those numbers. But I'm constantly watching the pixel resolution numbers to make sure I'm getting what I'll need to support the animation I intend to apply to the images once in FCP. Also bear in mind that I don't always scan the entire image. I only scan the area of an image that I intend to use in my program.
So the answer is that it all depends on your scanner's software and how far you plan to push into an image once in FCP. Do a few experiments ... you're a bright fellow so it shouldn't take long for you to find the formula that suits your purposes.
I haven't edited an HD Sequence using images yet, so I cannot offer definitive pixel resolutions for you there.
On to your specific questions:
1. See above. There is no one correct answer It all depends on what you intend to do with the image once it's in FCP. If you only plan to push in about 10%, you won't need much higher resolution than the equivalent of your FCP Sequence resolution. If you plan to push in further, you'll need a higher resolution to support that move.
2. I've been doing these for many years (SD Sequences only) and I've never loaded them into Photoshop first. I import the entire folder into FCP and drop it on the Timeline so I can see what the images look like on TV; unless your program is for CD-ROM or web delivery, that's where it counts. When you place them on the Timeline, FCP will automatically scale to your Sequence settings and pixel aspect ratio. If I see that some of them need adjustment using an external editor such as Photoshop, then and only then do I use that program. And by the way, if you have a vertical image and a 16 x 9 aspect ratio in FCP, how do you propose to crop it to fit? Perhaps you meant another term instead of "crop."
3. If it's a print, it won't matter what size they supply because you'll control the image size when scanning. If it's a file ... once again, the size (pixel resolution) depends on what you intend to do with the image once in FCP.
I really don't want to know WHY any of this is the way it is. I just want someone to say: "Do this; do this; and then do this."<<</div>
With that attitude, how did you ever earn a PhD from an Ivy League university? But if that is truly all you want, you might consider hiring an experienced editor to do it for you.

Final Cut Pro 6 on Mac OS Snow Leopard installation problem HELP!!!
After 2 - 3 hours of installing all 10 FCS 2.0 discs and Software Updates, I can't seem to launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. I get *"...software maybe damaged or not installed.."* So I removed all of them and only custom-installed Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. It works with no problem!!! Then I custom-installed Soundtrack, Motion, DVD Studio Pro etc..., I can't launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. again! What the **** is going on? I get that "damaged" warning and Final Cut Pro icon is replaced by missing application icon.
My Mac Pro also has _Pro Tools 8 LE_ with _003 Mixer Rack connect to USB_. That's it. No other application. You think this is maybe causing the problem?
Anyone having similar problem?https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
Carbon Copy Cloner is pretty simple to use. If you have any questions, post back or read the documentation. As I said in the user tip, test your clone after you make it to be sure it is bootable and your apps work. -
Final Cut Pro 10.0.4 Trial Just wont Work please Help
Ok i have tried everything and this tria just crashes. First of all let me tell you what i have done .
I have deleted all teh preference files.
I have deleted any and all events from my drive
I have run preference manager and deleted all files through that and it still crashes on start up
I have checked and verified my drive permissions
I have repaired my drive permissions and it still crashes
I have created a new account and tried running it and it crashes
I have installed OSX fresh on a new Drive and it still crashes at start up
I have tried changing out my video card and it still crashes
I have even tried installing Lion and the Updates and and it does the exact same thing..
I thought maybe it is because i was running an ATI 4890 But i took that out and put my GEFORCE 8800 back in and it still did the same thing.
I have run every hardware test i can on my machine and it comes up fine.. But this Final Cut Pro Trial crashes at boot up every time
I have never in my life had a problem with my machine or any software until now .. and this is really annoying I wont spend 300 dollars on a program that just doesnt work. .
it gets to the intro screen and says loading compressor support and then hangs for about 2 minutes then just crashes.
Here is my crash log.

Everyone is in dire and imminent peril.
Well the internet forums are like that. People with problems are airing them and you only need to see a few complaints to get the impression they are affecting the bulk of users, when in truth it is merely a handful compared with the countless thousands of satisfied customers.
The bulk of problems is due to user error and most of the rest can be credited to conflicts occurring on particular systems.
Manufacturers do get it wrong but most of the time most of the complaints are usually unfounded or unfair.
It sounds as though there are aspects of your setup that are causing the problems.
Some people think that applications should be tested for conflicts before being released.
They are, but the infinite number of permutations of ways a computer and its apps can be set up makes it impossible to test against all eventualities.
Sorry, this isn't directed at you. I'm just airing my thoughts to the world (or at least, this miniscule forum) in general. -
This is partially related to Final Cut Studio, although not necessarily. I've been trying to back up dozens of my miniDV tapes on to my harddrive for several months now, racing against the clock as their video quality starts to degrade. Since Final Cut Pro started giving me problems with the timecode breaks, I started using a capture program called Vidi instead (v0.4.7) Everything was capturing well, considering, until just last week where several of my tapes, which were shot in 4:3, would capture as 16:9. That is, the video files were clearly stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio and appeared distorted. Today I tried to go back to Final Cut (v6.0.6) to capture it the old way, and, lo and behold, the video was once again being stretched to 16:9.
A few things:
- I'm about as sure as I can be that these tapes were shot in 4:3. I've watched them several times on my TV and they are played back in 4:3, with the black bars on the left and right.
- I had actually captured video previously from one of these tapes a few years back and it recorded as a 4:3 video file, just as it should.
- I definitely have "4:3" checked off in Vidi when I capture the video. What's even more infuriating, is that BOTH Vidi and Final Cut show the video playing in its 4:3 aspect ration during apture. It's only when I check the captured file that it's been stretched to 16:9
- A tape I shot in 2008 captured perfectly with Vidi today - in it's 4:3 format. That seems to imply that it's not a software setting issue.
I'm starting to lose my mind with this, especially since I haven't found a single reference to this problem anywhere else. All I want is to get the raw DV data off of these tapes to work with at a future date, and I'd like it to be exactly as it was originally shot, not distorted. Maybe some bit of code on these tapes got messed up over time, resulting in capture software to think it was shot in 16:9? These tapes aren't anywhere near my oldest ones - they're from 2010 and 2011. Is there something obvious I'm missing when I capture these videos? If there's no other solution, is it possible to squeeze them back to 4:3? It might not look as good as if were captured in it's native format, but I'm out of ideas. Not sure if it makes any difference for archiving purposes, but dv files (dv streams) are not generally recommended for use in fcp. .mov with the dv codec is how fcp captures SD video via firewire. Someone a few months ago claimed that .dv was fine with fcp, but I seem to remember that audio will always need to be rendered and since I always use fcp for capture of DV material, it's not an issue for me.
You can use compressor to both convert to .mov with the dv codec and reset the anamorphic flag. Not sure if there will be any loss of quality, so it might be worth testing this. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will speak up regarding this or alternative methods of converting .dv to .mov
What problems are you having capturing from within fcp? Shouldn't be a problem. I find that setting the easy setup correctly is crucial for successful capturing. Even if all the individual elements that seem to compose the easy set up are correct, there can still be problems. Perhaps you might want to start a new thread regarding your capture problems and we can see if we can solve the problem. -
Final cut pro HD 2 not working with new updates
recently purchased a new imac. Most of my old programs were not supported. I updated to 10.9 from 10.5. Now, all the programs are running except Final Cut pro HD 2. I get a message sayin"power pc applications are no longer supported" Any suggestions? I read in an old discussion (from 2011) that I might need to download Rosetta?

I do not know which version of FCP the OP is using as I do not recognize his designation of Final Cut Pro HD 2.
However, last weekend I attempted to install Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6) into Snow Leopard installed in Parallels, as a test. It failed!
Final Cut's installer suggested the following problems: not enough VRAM - 64 needed; 0 present (even though Parallels is set for more than the minimum required VRAM); and a missing video card.
I attempted to work around this problem by using Pacifist to install FCS2, which worked, as far as the installation was completed. However, when I attemped to run FCS2, a dialog box came up with indicated that same two problems and then it quit. -
Final Cut Pro 7 Setup/workflow
Hello there,
I work at a small company and we are starting to build large amount of raw tape and capture scratch data. I am writing to learn about best practices, procedures, and troubleshooting techniques. We have two editors who both work off Macs on a 1 gig Ethernet network using Final Cut Pro 7. The data lives on a remote storage device, synology volume. They are currently connecting to the device using AFP and creating projects over the network.
Mac Devices:
iMac 27 OSX 10.9.5
16GB RAM
512 SSD
Synology:
4x1 gig E bonded
40 TB usable
Small Project :
Raw Data: approximately 13GB
Capture Scratch: approximately 15GB
Final Cut 7 project file: 170KB
Large Project :
Raw Data: approximately 135GB
Capture Scratch: approximately 345GB
Final Cut 7 project file: 11MB
The two editors are experiencing different level of lags and poor editing experience. The editors work off the remote volumes, they don't move the data (capture scratches) to their local drives when they are working on these projects.
I have a number of questions about to how approach this:
1. What are best practices for setting up -editor machines/volumes/etc?
2. What transfer/mount protocols should they use AFP/SMB/NFS ?
3. What software can I use to get benchmarks for read/write to the remote volumes ?
4. If we went to a 10Gig E network switch, should we upgrade the nic cards on the iMacs? should we use Fiber optic ? copper?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Media@relayIs this Synology volume rated for the high demands of video playback? Most generic servers companies employ for data isn't up to the rigors and speeds needed for video editing, especially two stations needing to access video at the same time. If you plan on having a server for video, you need to make sure it's fast enough for video work.
Both of those projects really have very little video data. Get 1TB drives for both stations and work off the media on them. FW800 at least...no USB2. USB3 is fine, if the computers have USB 3 connections. Thunderbolt is best, if they have those connections. -
Canon EOS 5D Mark II viedos and Final Cut Pro
Photographer Vincent Laforet have posted the original clips made with the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II. This camera could be record movies 1920x1080p in H.264.
The clips could be downloaded here: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/26/original-raw-clips-from-reverie-now-av ailable-for-download/
I've tested this video on two MacBook Pro, a 15" and a 17" HD, all with 4GB of RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz.
The video is flicking every 5 seconds, on Quicktime Pro and Final Cut Pro 6.
I've created a Sequence in HDTV 30fps and imported the clips. The next step was to import the clips. FCP asked me to change the video and audio settings of the timeline with the settings of the MKII. The video is flicking every 5 seconds.
I can't imagine what computer I should use.
I've seen the Xserve in the making of and I think that Vincent have used its to edit the footage with FCP. A last model of professional laptop from Apple is unable to do this.Hey Guys:
According to a recent analysis by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the h264 video captured in camera is one I-frame for each 15 P-frame. No B-frames. You can read the full report here:
http://nrkbeta.no/video-test-clips-from-canon-5d-mark-ii-gets-analyzed/#comment- 58420
I've posted a short video tutorial explaining the process to convert the source h264 files to Apple ProRes 422. IMHO, converting to the i-frame Apple ProRes 422 codec as early in the post process as possible will save time and headaches down the line. You can check out the video tutorial here:
www.petersalvia.wordpress.com.
Theoretically, by converting to ProRes you could work with the footage on a PC if you install the ProRes Decoder for Windows. That decoder is available here:

Hope this helps!

HOW TO Delete Unused Media from FINAL CUT PRO
*HOW TO DELETE UNUSED MEDIA FROM HARD DRIVE IN FINAL CUT PRO.* Keywords: disk disc drive space remove compressor
SUMMARY:
Say your original clip is 10 gigs, you can use only what you need and delete the rest from your hard drive. I know people on the forums say to just buy another hard drive, NO! It took 2 days to figure out but here it is!!! Email me if needed at [email protected]
QUESTION:
I captured 1 hour of video at a time and now want to delete from my hard drive all the parts I don’t want to use. I have 300GB of junk on my hard drive and I only want to use a few scenes using a few megabytes, so that I'll get most of my 300GB back!!!!
ANSWER:
In final cut on Mac, click on one small clip (to get familiar with process), go to “file”, “export”, then “using compressor”. This will open compressor software. Your file will open in the left top window. Then you need to batch the job or jobs. IMPORTANT: I’ve also solved the Compressor problem when you press “submit” to a batch and it states “Cluster: None”. Search forum for “In compressor you experience what I have”.
<Edited by Moderator>Part of the problem could lie in the fact it's an imovie project coming into FCP, wouldn't rule that out. Second my be the terms you use and what you expect to happen. For example, a subclip is just a smaller clip subbed from a larger clip. It has nothing to do with media management. But you can media manage a subclip and delete the unused media.
Try this (be sure to back up the original clip first). take a long clip into the viewer, make an IN and OUT duration of like 30 frames and then subclip that, Modify > Make Subclip. a new subclip will appear in the browser with a torn clip icon and the name Subclip. Right click on the subclip and choose Media Manager.... Check the Delete unused media from duplicated clip. As you toggle that the green Modified bar at the top change from the full clip size to a tiny modified size. If it does not then one of two things ... user error or the system is screwed up. That's the easiest way to test media manager. -
"media server application expectly quit" when submitting from final cut pro
browsing through the list, it seems the problem couldn´t be solved so far.
doing some systematic testing, the following riddle shows up:
... when adding a QT ref movie (or movie) directly to the compressor batch list and submit to the cluster, everything runs fine.
... when exporting from final cut pro:
menu -> export -> using compressor ...
submitting in compressor using:
1) Cluster: this computer: everything keeps running fine.
2) Cluster: MylovelyCluster ....
the job fails with the message "Failed: HOST [clusternode_name.local] media server application unexpectedly quit"
since there is 5TB + of data to be compressed, copying files to the render nodes is not an option. all data is on a shared xraid, connected via giganet.
Any ideas, any hints appreciated !
regards,
p.s. Anybody running an XSAN having the same issues?
G5s, G4s, G3s, macminis, powerbooks Mac OS X (10.4.7) xraid... well, the answer is in other topics.
showstopper explains it patently again and again ...
thanks from here.
shortly: when submitting from FCP, every node HAS to have FCP installed and MUST have access to the same relative file path (mounted shared volume). If the volume is not present, the render node will open the reconnect media dialogue and waits for user input. -
Final Cut Pro takes time to share/export a 40 minute video
I bought a brand new new Macbook Pro (4 GB RAM, i5, HD 500 GB (300 GB available) Mid 2012 model and it takes 3-4 hours to share/export a 40 minute video without any effects applied on the clips. I have another Macbook Pro, same model and same specs and it just takes an hour to render the same video/project which I think is reasonable time.
Video files are from my Canon 60d camera which are .mov files. I usually export my projects to H.264 Video and AAC. (Share>Master File)
I don't have any problem exporting/sharing a 3 minute video with effects applied on the clips on my macbook Pro where I'm having a problem with because it has the same export/share time with my other MBP. It takes 5 minutes to share/export a 3 minute video which I think is reasonable. The problem is why my new Macbook Pro takes time to share/export a project with a video duration of 30-40 minutes compared to my other Macbook Pro.
Thank you for your help!
Final Cut Pro version: 10.0.8
Macbook: OS X 10.9.2If you have two MBPs with exactly the same specs (including GPU) – and you have comparable free space on both system drives –and comparable free space on any media drives – then verify that your perceptions of their exporting times are different by doing a test with identical projects media and export settings – and ith no other apps running. If you confirm that one is much faster than the other, I'd suspect the GPU. Also open Activity Monitor to see what's being reported – particularly to see whether there are differences in the way memory is being used.

How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card to Final cut Pro 5.1.4
How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card (recorded with the Sony HVR Z 7E) to Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 – is this possible at all?
I managed to import the files to Premiere, but it was just a test. I am working at a very huge documentary project with Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 thats why I would prefere not to change the program or the version.
Simply exporting from Premiere back to final cut is also very complicated.
Thanks for any ideas.First, copy the card to a hard drive connected to your fcp workstation. I always back up all card based media at least 2 or three times. All hard drive will eventually fail. It's a question of when, not if.
I'm not familiar with this particular camera, but examine the contents of the copied files and see if you can find any .mov files. You can try importing these directly into fcp.
If you don't, you can try something like clipwrap
http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
or
Magic Bullet Grinder
http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/
But, I'd really advise upgrading to at least fcp6 or ideally fcp7 if you can find a copy. HDV is a problematic format. Although you can certainly work with it and it's a fcp approved format, converting your media to prores would make your life much easier.
