Final Cut Pro 7 vs. Final Cut Pro X: Which is better?

I am a current iMovie 9 user and I am curious which would be better for editing Video from Weddings and Quinceaneras FInal Cut Pro 7 or Final Cut Pro X?  I know professionals who have been using Final Cut Pro 7 say to stick to Final Cut Pro 7 but if I'm coming from iMovie 9 which one will give me more professional results?  Thanks for your help!!
Marie

You are FCX's target market.
Those who bemoan FCP's demise (I am among them) are generally broadcast professionals with requirements that FCX can't reach or with projects they must continue to access, or who are used to features in FCP that allow for quick editing (as opposed to quick rendering). You have none of those limitations and your familiarity with iMovie will do you well in FCX. Its user interface has many commonalities with iMovie and you can load your old iMovie projects directly. You should feel right at home.

  • Macbook vs. Macbook Pro Video output to a projector which is better?

OK, so I am having an argument with another guy about this. He swears that a macbook doesnt look as good as a macbook pro when being displayed on a projector.
My argument is: if you have and dvd, it will look the same when projected because the resolution is the same be it a MB or MBP. They swear it would look better because the MBP has a better video card than the MB. I wouldnt think this would make a difference because the output from the DVD is not that high (its not an HD signal) so at the highest resolution of the DVD, either MB or MBP could read this exactly the same. (I am talking DVI to VGA or Svideo on both MBs.)
So if its apples to apples (no pun intended) and both are connected from DVI to VGA (lets say) to a projector, they would both look the same...correct? Or are these guys right and the MPB would actually look much better?
    Help me out peoples...
Oh and one of the guys swears up and down that S-video is better than VGA....I keep telling him NO, but he doesnt get it.

they will output video pixel for pixel identically. no worries. screen spanning has been around for 5+ years now, so even the "weakest" machines can do it admirably nowadays.
The screen image starts out on your video card as a digital signal. VGA is an analog signal. So you downgrade your digital (DVI) signal to analog (VGA) to get a picture this way. All VGA signals will look like crap (though they will of course look much better than s-video because VGA is a newer standard). You need to get a projector that accepts a digital input such as DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort to have the best picture on whichever your machine is.
The only thing worse than this is using a DVI->VGA->DVI, which tries to convert a VGA signal back to digital DVI and degrades the signal further. It's like a xerox machine. Try to avoid digital->analog conversions!

  • Mac Pro for Final Cut Studio -- The Buying Guide

I am starting to think about upgrading my "old" Power Mac G5 Quad system to a Mac Pro system. As you might expect, this raises several issues.
What I do: I edit DV and HDV on FCS2. My specs are below. I am looking for the best speed (especially for rendering), stability and video quality I can afford (between $5,000 and $6,000).
Question 1: Is it true that Snow Leopard and FCP 7 are about a year away? If so, please assume for the following questions that I would be working with the full complement of FCS2 applications on the Leopard OS. (How worth waiting for do you think these are?)
Question 2: Without directing me to the various benchmark and testing sites (which I’ve already looked at), can you suggest the actual performance differences I would see (again, using the whole range of FCS2 apps) in the following:
Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
Question 3: I have heard that (with the exception of Compressor) FCS can only use a maximum of 4GB of RAM, and that the 6GB that the Mac Pro ships with are already more than it can use. Is this true? Is it true that Snow Leopard would allow FCS to make greater use of more RAM? And would this show up in the programs’ performance?
Question 4: To get the best video performance with my various FCS2 applications, is there a significant quality improvement in moving up from the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB to one of the other video cards? How would I notice a difference in the quality?
Question 5: Are there any other purchasing considerations I should think about when configuring a new Mac Pro?
    Thanks a lot.

Well, well, well, you make me think more about my last upgrade of an ATI Radeon 2600 to the latest ATI Radeon HD 4870!
I was looking on the Final Cut Pro thread to find one answer and look what I found, your questions!
Since yesterday night I was seeking the Apple Support threads just for fun and I now have doubts.
I am a Mac Pro (earlier 2008) owner. I upgraded it to 4 x 1.5 Tb Seagate hard drives and 10G of RAM from OWC (Other Word Computing). First let me tell you NOT to buy from Apple Store for your hard drive and/or memory upgrade. They are totally out of price list. I got my Mac Pro first with one 500 Gb Seagate drive. Then I added 2 x 500 Gb hard drives from Apple. I payed them 199,00 $ each
Last September, I upgraded the drive bays with 4 x 1.5 Tb from OWC. I paid them 229.00 $ each!
199,00 $ for 500 Gb or 229,00 $ for 1.5 Tb (that"s 3 times 500 Gb) which one would you take? And we are talking about two models from Seagate running at 7200 RPM, with 32 Mb of buffer.
    I mean... What is that?!!?
And the memory! Don't even think about it.
    I got first 4GB Matched Set (2 x 2GB) for 147,99 $ in September from OWC and my second order was 4GB Matched Set (2 x 2GB) for 132,79 $ in October.
I payed a total of 280,78 $ for 8GB of RAM while the price for this upgrade on Apple Store woul have cost me 1998,00 $
    *+Source Apple Store :+*
    *+Apple Memory Module 4GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC 2x2GB $999.00+*
    Multiply that by 2!
Now how much memory would you need?
I am not a Final Cut Pro user, but I use Final Cut Express a lot, with animation QuickTime movies exported from my Astronomy software Starry Night Pro Plus.
Yesterday I posted this into a thread to answer a user :
+Every morning I have my preferred applications started: Mail, Safari, iTune, Aperture and Final Cut Express. I just did a test for you. I started Mail, Safari, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Starry Night Pro Plus (OpenGL Astronomy Software), Terminal, Quicktime, TextEdit and NeoOffice.+
+With all these apps running, I still have 6.48G of Free RAM out from the 10G installed!+
+It's when I start hungry applications like VMWare Fusion running Windows XP, or Quicktime with a lot of movies opened that I could see the memory level going low!+
+Your bottle neck in video editing will probably be the video card, after the disk speed. Be sure to use 7200 RPM disk and eSATA for your video plans if possible. Firewire 800 will works fine on external drive but it could giggle. I had an ATI Radeon HD 2600 that I recently upgraded to an ATI Radeon HD 4870. the drivers aren't ready yet from Apple. We are all waiting for the next OS X release 10.5.7 for the drivers! For now, I am running on Beta drivers.+
+It's hard to say by now if I have better performance into Final Cut Express because the movie I was working on was an animation movie using plans exported from Starry Night Pro Plus via Quicktime and "animation" codec without any compression. As soon as I make a modification, I still have to render the output for smooth playing.+
Now, after some test with Starry Night Pro Plus this morning, I can safety say that Starry Night Pro Plus with Open GL does use my video card extra speed and that my experience navigating into the Universe is much better and smooth.
But honestly, even if I have to admit that I am using the Beta drivers for the HD 4870, I must say that I have very big doubt that Final Cut Express does use the extra power of the HD 4870 compare to the HD 2600!
In fact, I am searching the support thread for this answer.
Does anyone can say if Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro does make use of the extra hardware feature of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or not?

  • Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express -- Format issues?

    Hi,
I'm shooting a project on a Panasonic HVX-200A, and my cameraman is going to import the footage to his Final Cut Pro station. He's then going to transfer the FCP footage and data over to an external hard drive, which I am going to use to edit the film using Final Cut Express.
Will there be any formatting issues if I bring the data from Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express?
    Thanks!!
    Sameer Ketkar

Clip files can be easily imported into FCE if they are QuickTime DV-NTSC/DV-PAL or Apple Intermediate Codec (720p30, 1080i50/60). If they are other formats/codecs they should be converted to DV or AIC before importing into FCE.
FCPro project files cannot be imported into FCExpress.
I'd suggest a trial run before committing the project to this workflow.

  • Final Cut Express Vs. Final Cut Pro Vs. Adobe Premiere

    Hey all,
I just bought my first Apple computer and I'm loving it. I have worked with Final Cut Pro in the past and I really enjoy working with it. However, $1000 is a bit steep. I would like to ask what your opinions are on maybe getting Final Cut Express or Adobe Premiere Pro.
I have the trial of Adobe Premiere right now, but whenever I place a clip into the timeline, it needs to be rendered. This was never an issue with Final Cut on the computers at my school. I was wondering if you knew if Final Cut Express would have better rendering times and wouldnt need as much rendering. Also, it may be the graphics card in my computer. If you think this is the problem, can you provide me with a solid video/graphics card that I should look into?
    Thanks all,
    Kevin

I own all three programs actually - here's my advice.
Stay the heck away from Adobe Premiere. It is no where nearly as Mac friendly and for the price, just isn't worth it. I purchased it for the Blu-ray authoring capabilities of Encore, so that's all I use it for. The plus to Premiere is that it can edit some native formats that Final Cut Pro cannot. For example, native AVCHD as well as MPEG-2 in program streams. That being said, Encore is the best option for Blu-ray authoring at a reasonable cost that gives you the ability to modify menus, etc.
Final Cut Express is a great application - my only reason for having final cut pro was my need to edit footage at 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. FCE only handles 29.97 (and 25 fps). Final Cut Pro also gives you the ability to edit more footage natively. FCE only supports DV, HDV, and AVCHD, with the latter two being transcoded into Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. FCP supports a myriad of formats and allows native editing in HDV - although it still transcodes AVCHD. FCP also gives you access to the ProRes set of codecs which are significant improvements on Apple Intermediate Codec that offer high quality in transcoding and editing.
So the real question is, what are you going to be doing?

  • Final cut express versus Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5

    Hi
Resently I bought a Mac Pro and Final cut express.
In the past I used Premiere Pro 1.5. When my project was finisched i wrote it back to tape as a Microsoft DV avi file. Is it possible to create a Microsoft DV avi file in Final Cut Express ?
I'll aske this because this tape is transported to the studio and imported into Adobe Premiere 6.0.
    thanks in advance
    Tonnie
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9)
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Once it's on tape it's back in DV format and is no longer an AVI or .mov or any other computer format. If the material is put back on tape it can be captured from the camera or deck into Premiere in whatever format that uses.

  • Final Cut Studio Vs Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

What are the best reasons for purchasing Final Cut Studio over Adobe Premiere Pro CS5?
    Thanks!

Hi friends i'ven reading your coments and my conclusions are CS5 is faster and has the same features and quality than FCP, i like to ask to Studio X if you know more FCP and you are a pro why? with facts because if i have to buy or say to a friend or client go and use one or another with real facts.
Example FCP has better color calibration, better final quality, more features or so.
Another curious thing is that jhon 1 in 2 said is better AVCHD compatibility or handle these are to consistent points that i can undertand as a normal person.
I can understand a  point if you can say me why FCP is better with examples because i know much of hardware but a little of this software, i can give a big point to a software tha can use mi machine at full capacity because if i spend 10K$ in a computer i'd like a blazing fast one, if not is better to spend only 2.5K$ and wait the same amount of time for the same results.
Sorry for my english i'm not from USA so my vocabulary is short.

  • Is it possible to load Final Cut X and Final Cut 7 on the same macbook pro?

I already have Final Cut X on my MacBook Pro and I tried to load Final Cut 7 on there and after it said install complete I checked and it was not in my applications but the peripheral applications were. Is it possible to load them both on the same mac?

You must install Final Cut Studio first, run all updates and then you can install FCP X.
Go to digitalrebellion.com, get a free copy of FCS Remover and use it to uninstall FCP X.
You can then install FCS and download FCP X again -the AppStore knows that you already paid for it.
FCS will be moved to its own sub-folder in Applications.

  • What export options in Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Pro should I select to export  HDV video in .MOV files to highest quality Windows-compatible files?

I have some HDV video files imported through iMovie to .MOV files with Apple Intermediate Codec.
I need to convert these to Windows compatible video files of the highest possible ( least loss) quality.  What export options in Final Cut Pro or in Quicktime Pro should I select?  The codex in the converted files must not be Apple Intermediate Codec, for which there is no Windows version.

Okay, I read the whole Flip4Mac website.
Flip4Mac is an application for Apple computers.
Perhaps my question was unclear.  When I posed it I was thinking of asking somebody with an Apple shop to do the conversion for me, and wanted advice on settings for his QUicktime Pro /Final Cut Pro that would produce the highest quality Windows -compatible files.
The Windows version of Quicktime will not play Quicktime files with Apple Intermediate Codec.  You get black screen video, although the audio does come through.
So here's what I need:  I need a Windows application that will transcode Quicktime files in Apple Intermediate Codec, with no loss or very little loss, to WIndows-compatible files.   All Windows, all the time.  Thank you.

  • Why Final Cut X and Not Premier Pro?

I've been using FCP for many years and was shocked when FCX first came out. Thought it was just iMovie with a few more features. I know there was a big update to FCX which added a bunch of features that pros need (why Apple would didn't just wait 6 mos. and release THAT version first is beyond me, but that's another thread in itself).
I can't use FCP 6 forever, but I'm nervous to make the leap. I have to say, Premiere Pro CS6 is tantalizing and is fully supported people seem to love it.
I make :30 sec. TV/web spots mainly, with the occasional longer project thrown in. We already have CS5 so upgrading wouldn't be too bad.
Why Final Cut X and Not Premier Pro?
    Any advice is appreciated.

first of all: I'm no pro - my personal enthusiasm about FCPX doesn't help you
maybe some 'real world' examples from professionals using FCPX:
    http://fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/906-making-a-music-video-shot-on-red-composited -in-after-effects-graded-in-resolve-and-edited-in-final-cut-pro-x

or this example from the Ripple Team:
    http://fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/905-lightning-fast-organisation-of-media-i n-final-cut-pro-x
... to illustrate the very different GUI and workflows of FCPX.
it's probably crucial when youre used to the 'old' (no offense ment!) metaphores.
I assume a perfect integration of Premiere with AE and PS ... (which would completely overstrain an hobbyist like me - way too much options ) - FCPX is in its actual version more an island (even no integration with/to Motion5)
best advice was already given twice:
test on your own - keep in  mind: it is very different ....

  • Upgrading from Premiere Pro to Final Cut Pro

    Hi,
Could anyone tell me if there is any way for Apple to allow me to crossover and upgrade from Adobe Premiere Pro to Final Cut Pro?
Our company has a full version of Adobe Video Collection 2.5 (Windows Only). I am now working fully on a Mac Pro, so need to get a copy of Final Cut Studio, and if there is any way to upgrade, instead of having to buy a full copy i would be happy to use it.
If anyone knows of a way to do this, could you let me know?
    Thanks,
    Steven.

There is no crossgrade option for Adobe to Apple software.
You could always run your Adobe software under XP in Boot camp or Parallels on the MacPro. If you don't/can't do that, then it's time to have a chat with your line of credit banker.
    good luck.

  • MacBook/Macbook Pro and Final Cut Studio

I am about to buy a Mac, but im not sure if I should get the MacBook or MacBook Pro? Which is better suited for Final Cut Studio? Is there a specific version of the MacBook/MacBook Pro that would be best? Thanks so much!

Exactly. It will install, but if you have any problems and you need to call Apple, they won't give you any support. If you're going to spend $1,200 on some software, you should pay for a computer that supports the minimum requirements.

  • Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio 5.1.2

I've had problems trying to export mpeg files from final cut pro using compressor after having updated all applications to their current versions (FCP 5.1.2, Compressor 2.3, Qmaster 2.3, QT 7.1.3...) including firmware, OS and security updates. Since I was kind of in the middle of a project I ended up reverting back to the original universal crossgrade of Final Cut Studio (FCP 5.1, Compressor 2.1, Qmaster 2.1...) in order to get the desired results of a muxed mpeg. Now, before I go back to trying to resolve this issue of updating the software, I would like to know if anyone is running Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro with all updates current (5.1.2, 2.3...) and with the ability to export muxed mpeg streams - both audio and video in the same file. Also, I have posted more specific questions regarding these issues in the compressor and FCP forums but decided I needed to hear from some Mac Pro users who have had success with the Final Cut Studio updates. BTW, I have done all the updates of Final Cut Studio (5.1.2, 2.3...) on a G5 quad at work and have had no problems whatsoever. I'd just like to have everything up to date and functional. Other than trying to get this worked out, I have found my Mac Pro to be most excellent. Thanks in advance.

Dave, thanks for your input. It would crash out during the compressor export and the failure reason would say 3x Crash Server Down in the compressor box. I haven't tried an mpeg-1 because all we broadcast are mpeg-2 program streams. Most of the stuff I export is no longer than 10 - 12 minute segments. If you could, try exporting as an mpeg-2 muxed. Some other possible factors - I had captured the original footage on a G5 quad at work, put them on an external drive and then loaded them onto the Mac Pro and imported them into the project. Could there be a difference between DV codecs of the PPC and the Intel processors? Now that I'm at a stopping point I'm planning on trying to do the update again. Just hoping to catch something I might have missed. If I were a total computer illiterate I would say user error, but I'm not.
