Final Cut Pro, Compressor,  and strobed video...

Recently I have started doing projects on Final Cut Studio 2. I have been taking footage of a local pro wrestling outfit, taking my ringside roaming cam and taking the school's hard cam and doing a 2 camera output with Multiclip. I have a Mac G5 1.6 GHz Tower, and am using a Sony SR-47 Hard Drive Camera for my roaming cam shots. I have noticed that the footage on the playback on the camera, as well as when I import it into FCP is fine. But when I output the footage through compressor, the fast action footage (which there is quite a bit of) seems to be very strobed. When the action slows down it's fine, but when it picks back up, there it is again.
I asked my Apple Store teacher about this, his suggestion was to mark where ALL of the actions shots are in FCP and mark them to be "less compressed". That will take way too long, and there is no guarantee that will work. So I come to everybody here, is there a way that I can stop this from happening? I don't think the length of the entire show has much to do with it, since it was only 90 mins or so, which I know can easily fit onto a 4.7 GB DVD. (My teacher said try using dual layer DVD's...have had nothing but problems using dual layer DVD's for anything else but data.)
The footage on the cam is MPEG 2, and I have been exporting it via Streamclip to make a .dv file, which is then imported into FCP. The footage is then edited, and exported through compressor to DVD.
So, any help? Thanks in advance!
Tom

I spoke to a FCP rep at Apple yesterday, what he said was that FCP is by default set on lower field dominance, and that my Sony cam is set on upper field dominance, which would cause those strobed video problems. Also, he said try de-interlacing the video, that could also be a problem. Well my next project is in 2 weeks so I will try that and see how it goes...

  • Final Cut Pro x and Compressor 992 hour to process

I edited a 1 hour-40 minute video, on Final Cut Pro X and processed using Apple's Compressor.
I have tried different Operating Systems (Mavericks and Mountain Lion) on two different Mac Computers.
IMac 2.8 Mhz and Mac Book Pro (both 2008)
It has been transcoding to create video to run on Apple Devices, for over 6 days now, and it shows that it will take 992 hours to process.
The same video, some months back, with Mountain Lion, took a couple of days to process.
Question: Why is it taking this long now?
I have tried to get a DVD done, different types of output; none have succeeded.
I guess Apple, has made adjustments to their Operating Systems, to basically render this computers inoperable, forcing customers to buy their latest Mac models.
Yes, I went to the "Genius Bar" at Apple (twice), first they told me to increase the memory, which I did; even though months ago I had videos processed without extra memory.
The second time at the "Genius Bar", after I had installed extra memory, they had nothing to say, except that "they had a friend" with the same problem, but after "the friend" bought a new Mac, the problem was resolved.
I called Apple support and was told to "reset PRAM", which I did. Still the problem persists.
    Any ideas?

You don't mention how much RAM is in your machines, nor what are the versions of FCP X and the OS.
These can make a lot of difference. If you are trying a long export with very little RAM (and I must say 4GB is *very little* RAM), then it can get bogged down tremendously. Do you have at least 8GB?
How much free RAM is reported in Activity Monitor?
Are you using Mavericks or a previous version of the OS? Mountain Lion was notorious for slowing down to a crawl in such circumstances.
Give us more info, so we can better help.
In the meantime, you might consider exporting just a small section of the movie (use I and O to mark an in and an out point in the timeline) and see how fast it goes; keep Activity Monitor open while you are doing it.

  • In Final Cut Pro x, Somehow my video got muted and I can't find a way to UNMUTE it! (it won't let me manually lift up or down the waveform - nor go in and raise the level of loudness) Any suggestions? (How to unmute)

Do you know how to use the volume adjustment line?
If so, is it not working?
Can you post a screenshot of your audio?

No, FCP X will only work with Compressor 4.

  • Question about Final Cut Pro X and miniDV's

    Hi,
I'm thinking in buying Final Cut Pro X and use it to import and edit many hours of footage that I have on miniDV's tapes.
I've heard that to work with miniDV's, Final Cut Pro X is not great, especially regarding timecode, etc. True?
Any thoughts and advises? Many thanks!

My experience is if you're shooting SD then you shouldn't have a problem unless you are trying to load a full hour. When I tried that, the computer went crazy and loaded the video as thousands of clips just a few frames long.
That was supposed to be for a multicam shoot. I went back to FCP 7 where I've never had a single problem after at least 80 multicam projects with as many as eight cameras.
I'll have to try it again in FCP X now that there have been two updates since my last try.
I've also used HDV mini DV tapes shot with a Canon HV40. The video looked great in FCP X and I had no problem with clips that were 2-3 minutes long.
I did not load my HDV clips as ProRes in FCP X because, when I did try it, they looked like total crap. I was afraid my finished exported video would also look like that.

  • Final cut pro 7 and AVCHD import ?

Just got Final Cut Pro 7 and I can't see wether or not that it is able to import natively Sony AVCHD video. I know its probably just me, so much there to see and learn.

    Hi -
In FInal Cut Pro, go to the Help menu and open Final Cut Pro Help.
Once it is open, search for "Working with AVCHD".
The chapter will tell you all you need to know.

  • Is Mavericks compatible with Final Cut Pro 7 and the rest of Studio 3?

I still use FCP 7 and limp along, but recent updates of FCP X are encouraging.  Until I'm ready to take the plunge, would someone tell me if there's been any feedback re Mavericks' compatibility with Final Cut Pro 7 and the other software in the Studio 3 Suite - especially Compressor and DVD Studio Pro?  I'd love to dl Mavericks but not if there are compatibility issues.
    Thanks ~

Going from SL to Lion is not advised. Start clean.
Install Lion. Run updates. Install FCS. Run updates.

  • Final Cut Pro X and 7 on same system

I am using Final Cut Pro 7 and I was not very keen on Final Cut Pro X when I tried it out.
However, I have just learned that it could be advantageous workwise if I am prepared to work on some FCPX projects.
I'm just curious to know if it is safe to run both applications on the same system; e.g. do they share preference files? Do they use the same plugins folder etc.?
I know that in the past (and I mean the distant past) I have had problems trying to run different versions of the same software in the same machine and I'm too comfortable with FCP7 to just leap into working with an application about which I got an unfavourable impression and which many fellow professionals have told me instigated a move to Premiere.
Can somebody give me some definitive advice, please?

Yes it's safe and no they don't use same plug-ins.
I'm running FCS3 and FCPX, Motion5, Compresor 4 on two systems. No problems.
Bets would be to follow these steps – the same start-up explanation.

  • Final Cut Pro X and the Road to **** (and back again)

    Hi Guys,
I have an interesting article on FCP X by Rick Young. Real world experiences.

A very interesting article Ken, especially the comments about compound clips within compound clips.
I've never experienced the horrific problems some folk have claimed but then I never put compound clips within compound clips.
In  fact, until today I had never made a compound clip!

  • Final Cut Pro X and Mac Caption Site Licenses

How much does it cost for a site license for Final Cut Pro X and Mac Caption?  I need to have one computer going for production and one for training someone.  Is there 501C-3 pricing available?

FCP X can be used on as many Macs as you own.  Be sure each is logged in to your iTunes/App Store account.  So for two Macs that you own, you can download to both, only pay for one.
There is a bulk license deal for it, but you'd need to be running 10+ Macs before you'd get any discount or anything.
Mac Caption is an issue you'll have to take up with them.

  • Final Cut Pro X and Videocam compatibility

I am ready to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X AND to buy a new videocam.  I like the features of the Canon Vixia HF S30 (especially the viewfinder, not available in cheaper cameras), but neither Canon nor Apple will reassure me that this camera is compatible with Final Cut Pro X.  Has anyone tried this camera with this software?
    Thanks.

    What we need to know:
The Mac model, how much RAM, type and specifications of graphics card, version of Mac OS X, amount of free space on the main drive, version # of FCP or FCS that you are attempting to install, with a list of the disks included in the box.

  • How can I make Final cut pro 7 and Yosemite work?

    Hi dear Apple.
I have this huge problem with Final cut pro 7 and Yosemite.
I have tried to install it on a Mac book pro that has Yosemite but it doesn't work.
I have an I mac with finalcut pro 7 working on Lion but I need to upgrade it to Yosemite to be able to use CC Adobe.
I have a feature film worth 6,7 million SEK with Final cut pro 7 and I can't translate it to XML files to premiere cause it is in its last editing process. I get an error everytime I try. Also the last version of Fcp (X) ***** for a professional editor. So.. My only option is to finish this film in Fcp7.
How can I use Yosemite and still be able to keep Fcp7?
Please help me or do something about this issue soon. I bought fcp7 for 11000 SEK at the time that was quite expensive.

Hi Meg the dog! Thanx for answering!
I know it was left to die 4 years ago. I just think its ****** up.. I work with documentaries and it takes quite a while to finish. I have done one for 6 years now. If I had known that Fcp7 was left to die I would never had started to edit 6 years ago...
I did try this recommended on the forum by another user:
Go to the app location in finder, CTRL click on the app and choose [Show Package Contents]. A folder [Contents] appears, click on it and choose [MacOS]. You'll see a Unix executable. Double click, you'll start Terminal. At the same time fcp will launch. After fcp is launched, close terminal and confirm when asked. Now fcp is up and running. Close fcp and the next time, just open fcp the normal way. DONE!
But it doesn't work for me. I can't launch fcp7.
I have Fcp7 Installed on my I mac and I wonder if that will effect fcp7 if I upgrade to Yosemte?
I tryed to export XML to work on premiere and this is what happends:
Any recommendations? I am going crazy here..
