Final cut pro esata scratch disk

Hi, i have to edit HD footage and i need a external hard drive... Can i use Esata disks as scratch disk on my macbook pro?
Thanx a lot

Yes. You'll need the appropriate esata Expresscard34 adapter to connect the drives to the machine.
However, if you have one of the newest MacBookPros without the slot, you are out of luck.

  • What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro re: Scratch Disks etc

What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro with regards to Scratch Disk etc.
I have a lot of projects and at the moment they are all over the place on various external HDDs etc.
I just bought a new Firewire 800 External HDD and want to get everything straight but I'm not quite sure where to start...
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank You

Media Manager (available from the File menu bar item) will consolidate all elements of your project together with a linked copy of the project file to a single folder in a location of your choice. There are various options to leave out unused footage, include handles etc. Safest way is to copy the files. Delete the originals when you are sure the copy works.
The user manual has a detailed description of how MM works.

  • Final Cut Pro and Scratch Disks

    Hello All,
I have been reading some books and posts on various fourms and I am a little confused about something, maybe someone can provide me some advice.
Lets say you have three drives (all non-raid). The first, a 10k RPM drive holds your MAC OS and all your applications, like Final Cut and After Effects. Your second drive a very fast (15k rpm, 75 gig) but very small drive is your "scratch disk." Your third drive a normal (7.2k RPM) 1TB drive is used to store all your media/graphic/audio files.
Tell me, would there be much performance improvement with such a configuration vs. having the scratch disk be the same drive as the one the actual application is on, with the stored file on the 1TB drive?
Thanks your time, attention and responses people.

"I was under the impression from what I've read that the scratch disk (which I understand is a drive the computer will use when it runs out of RAM to process filters etc like in Photoshop)"<<<</div>
In FCP, the scratch drive or 'capture scratch' drive should be any drive other than your system drive (with OS, apps, etc.) It has no relationship to RAM, while other apps may.
I've not worked with Vista or Bootcamp, so can't really advise on drive speed/performance. I do remember getting our first G5 with a 10K rpm/60Gb system drive and regretted not going for the 7.2K rpm/250Gb system drive for more internal storage, when I found that FCP ran fine on the 7.2rpm drives.
I keep a variety of 'media' types on my scratch disk, but try to limit it to my captured video files for organizational purposes. This makes it quicker to locate and trash the video clips when I'm done with them....NOTE: I will only trash video that has been captured with valid original source timecode....all other 'media' gets archived for future use, if needed.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 initial setup settings (DSLR user) new user

    Hello Guys,
I just bought Final Cut Pro 7 and installed it. Can anyone give me some tips on how to do an initial setup or how I should set up my Final Cut Pro. Scratch disk, ext.
How can I optimize it for HD DSLR? I mainly shoot with Canon 5d and Canon7d DSLR with 24frames per second and I will importing and editing and capturing footage from these DSLR, how should I set the preferences and settings be on my final cut pro 7 best optimal use for these cameras.
I also heard that I should be converting all the videos to pro res 422 before editing, so It can render faster or something like that. Can some please explain that pro res conversion part.
I am also a new user, I have little knowledge on fcp, so please bare with my newbie questions. Thanks so much.

Thanks Nick for the links, I'm actually a video guy, been doing corporate av video for concerts, professional sports, broadway theatre, and corporate evens, and also do my own videography on the side. But I am more of a shooter, I have used FCP in the past awhile back but I had a partner that did all of the editing. But I have used it FCP in the past, can't remember much though.
Does anyone know which apple pro res format is best for DSLR editing. I see there is 422, 422(proxy), 422(HQ), 422(LT) and 4444.

  • HOW TO Delete Unused Media from FINAL CUT PRO

*HOW TO DELETE UNUSED MEDIA FROM HARD DRIVE IN FINAL CUT PRO.* Keywords: disk disc drive space remove compressor
    SUMMARY:
Say your original clip is 10 gigs, you can use only what you need and delete the rest from your hard drive. I know people on the forums say to just buy another hard drive, NO! It took 2 days to figure out but here it is!!! Email me if needed at [email protected]
    QUESTION:
I captured 1 hour of video at a time and now want to delete from my hard drive all the parts I don’t want to use. I have 300GB of junk on my hard drive and I only want to use a few scenes using a few megabytes, so that I'll get most of my 300GB back!!!!
    ANSWER:
In final cut on Mac, click on one small clip (to get familiar with process), go to “file”, “export”, then “using compressor”. This will open compressor software. Your file will open in the left top window. Then you need to batch the job or jobs. IMPORTANT: I’ve also solved the Compressor problem when you press “submit” to a batch and it states “Cluster: None”. Search forum for “In compressor you experience what I have”.

Part of the problem could lie in the fact it's an imovie project coming into FCP, wouldn't rule that out. Second my be the terms you use and what you expect to happen. For example, a subclip is just a smaller clip subbed from a larger clip. It has nothing to do with media management. But you can media manage a subclip and delete the unused media.
Try this (be sure to back up the original clip first). take a long clip into the viewer, make an IN and OUT duration of like 30 frames and then subclip that, Modify > Make Subclip. a new subclip will appear in the browser with a torn clip icon and the name Subclip. Right click on the subclip and choose Media Manager.... Check the Delete unused media from duplicated clip. As you toggle that the green Modified bar at the top change from the full clip size to a tiny modified size. If it does not then one of two things ... user error or the system is screwed up. That's the easiest way to test media manager.

  • Can I upgrade final cut express to final cut pro?

For some reason I'm having trouble finding the answer to this question. Can I upgrade my final cut express to final cut pro for a cheaper price then having to buy final cut pro from scratch? From what I've read, both final cuts are pretty similar so is an upgrade possible? I've found some posts saying you can, but they were from 2005 and not sure if that is still possible.
    Thanks

I remember learning that myself a few months ago and feeling kicked in the 'nads by Apple. FWIW, I've seen people selling their copies of FCE on craigslist. Not sure it's "supported" by Apple, but what choice do you have to reclaim any value? If you upgrade, FCE is essentially useless and redundant software to you.

  • When starting Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 I am all of a sudden getting a message that says "One or more of the scratch disks don't have read/ write access" and now the app won't operate - how do I fix this so I can use Final Cut Pro?

When starting Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 I am all of a sudden getting a message that says "One or more of the scratch disks don't have read/ write access" and now the app won't operate - how do I fix this so I can use Final Cut Pro?

Glad you found the answer.  But something seems wrong.  FCP should be able to assign the scratch disk to your startup drive.  It's not advisable, but it should be possible.  You might want to try and figure out what's going on before what ever's going on cause other problems.

  • Final Cut Pro Documents folder reappears after changing scratch disk.

After attempting to reorganize and cleanup my hard drive, I have come across the reason why I have such a random system to begin with. A while back I had the same problem, but chose to let it lie instead of fixing it. So now I'm asking for help.
I've tried to make a new folder in which all the documents, caches, and items having to do with Final Cut Studio 2 are placed, instead of having some applications' files here and others' there. But my problem is that even after changing my scratch disk location and my waveform/thumbnail/autosave locations to the new folder, every time I open up Final Cut Pro, it creates the "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder once again.
Will I have to rebase my whole organizational scheme around this stubborn issue?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
*I am running Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0.6).

Well, I'm really trying to simply recreate this file under another name, "Final Cut Pro," instead of "Final Cut Pro Documents," and therein lies the problem, because it creates this folder by default. Right now I've got everything saving to my "Final Cut Pro" folder as my scratch disk location, and a blank "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder that I want to delete.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Issue Launching Final Cut Pro - Missing Disks Window....?

Can anyone help me with this issue? Just loaded FCP on my Intel Mac, and I keep getting this pop up window named " Missing Disks" that is telling me "To preserve the integrity of the data used by FCP HD, it is necessary to ensure the existence of the following path(s):
'36th Chamber/Users/Macluva99/Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents' is missing.
And it gives me the option to (1) Quit the program (2) Check again or...(3) Reset scratch Disk (then another window pops up and I have no clue what to do with.
    Any ideas...?
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

This is actually version 4.5 for FCP HD, but I had loaded it on this machine a month ago and it was working and it wasn't giving me this pop up window/issue. That was when I was still on Tiger I believe. Would it be because im also on Leopard now as well?

  • Upgrading From Final Cut Pro 5 to 6 - can you use full install disk?

    Hi,
I have one MacBook Pro running Final Cut 6 (with Final Cut Studio 2), and another one running Final Cut Pro 5 (with Final Cut Studio). We're looking to upgrade the second one to Final Cut Studio 2.
Does anyone know if the upgrade can be done with the disks from the full install box of Studio 2, using the product key from an upgrade? We happen to be in the middle of East Africa at the moment, so shipping is an issue...
    Thanks

You CAN install Final Cut Studio with only the upgrade disk set BUT you will need the product key for BOTH the Final Cut Studio 2 AND the previous version.
After you insert the Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade installation disk you will first be asked to input the product key for the upgrade version and then after you will be requested for the product key of the previous version.
After this, the installation process does NOT require any disks from the previous version of Final Cut Studio.

  • How to Free up Disk Space to export from  Final Cut Pro to QuickTime?

I am using Final Cut Pro on a Mac OX10. When I try to export a Final Cut Pro project to QuickTime I get a message saying that I do not have enough disk space available. How do I free up additional disk space? (I am a little confused because I have already deleted more disk space than I am current trying to use)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Might try restarting the computer, just to refresh the system's memory... be sure you empty the trash too... the new space won't show up until you do.

  • I have an hd movie on final cut pro x; i want to create an sd disk of that movie. compressor created 2 files: dolby.... and mpeg2. How do I get these files burned to disc to create my sd movie?

I have an hd movie on final cut pro x; i want to create an sd disk of that movie. compressor created 2 files: dolby.... and mpeg2. How do I get these files burned to disc to create my sd movie?

These are elementary streams and they would be used by DVD authoring apps that use them for reasons like foreign language capability. Examples would be DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Encore, Toast.
The most straightforward way to burn your DVD is either to use the Share feature in FCP or the Batch Template feature in Compressor.
If you can find a boxed copy of iLife (try Amazon), it should have iDVD as part of the suite of apps. iDVD offers far more complete authoring capability than FCP or C4. iDVD  doesn't work with elementary streams; you'd just drag in your HD movie and you'd be good to go.
    Good lluck.

  • I downloaded Final cut pro x, how do i get hard copy disks?

I recently downloaded Final Cut Pro X from the App store to my MacBook Pro (OS X-10.9.5). I need to move it and the projects to a different MBP in the office. Do I need the hardcopy disks in order to move the application? If so, how do I get them?

you can redownload the application from the app store using the same ID you used to purchase it originally at no charge.
