Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 upgrade questions...

a friend of mine has Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and he has resisted upgrading to tiger (he is still on 10.3) because he thinks he will have to upgrade FCP as well. does FCP HD 4.5 NOT work with tiger? is my friend wrong? will it work fine in tiger?
i dont use it, but it seems to me that it should still work, just like all other programs should when you upgrade your OS. My friend is on a G5 tower... with 1GB ram... not sure about the speed, but i think its enough to not be an issue...

He might want a touch more RAM to be running Tiger... it uses more leaving less for the Apps, but there's many a user running FCP 4.5 on Tiger.
That said, the unversal crossgrade program is over in about 3 weeks, so it would be HIGHLY recommended by any that he take advantage of this. Depending on the software he has, the upgrade to 5.1 STUDIO could only cost him 99 bucks... 199 at the most. That's a lot of improved software he could be running on Tiger.

Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 upgrade

Hello,
I am a long time Mac user, but not (yet) a Final Cut user - and I'm a newbie here with a version/upgrade question.
I have been offered a new (still shrinkwrapped) Final Cut Pro HD v.4.5 to buy for a generous discount. (I realize that this is not the newest version.)
My plan was to buy this and then buy an update/upgrade to the newest version soon after.
However-
On the huge box there is a 1"x1" sticker under the shrink-wrap that says:
"Upgrade from Final Cut Pro 1, 2 or 3"
I would assume that means that this needs a previous version on the computer (or auth. code from a previous version) to be able to be used, but this software is being offered as complete.
The "requirements" on the box mention nothing of a previous version being needed, but it seems odd that this is being offered as complete with that sticker on the box.

Can you upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with upgrade?

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with $699 upgrade?
I purchased Final Cut Pro 2 years back and then purchased the Final Cut Pro 3 upgrade. I have not used it in years, but now I want to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. Is this possible by just purchasing the upgrade?

I have Final Cut Pro 5 install discs and recently upgraded to iMac with Intel processor. Is there a way to exchange the discs to Intel version?

Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 - upgraded to Leopard, lost serial!!! Options???

I had Final Cut Pro installed on Tiger before upgrading to Leopard. I did an 'archive and install' and now when I open the program (or any other program like Soundtrack) it asks me for the serial again.
The software was a gift and I don't have the serial anymore. Any way for me to not have to buy another version? Help!!!

If you did an "Archive and Install" then this file should still be accessible in your archived system.

Final Cut Pro 7 Closed Captioning/Hardcoding question

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the closed captioning that final cut 7 now allows. I'm using movcaptioner to create SCC files to import into final cut for closed captioning of a broadcast television series. However, this show is also to be broadcast with another language track besides english with hardcoded english subtitles. Is there any way to do this or any other application if I can't do it in final cut? It would be extremely beneficial to use the closed captioning as the english language subtitles for the foreign language version.

If I understand your question, you want to re-use your SCC file.
My subtitle prep tool can do so (or even generate the .SCC)

Then output to XML and have your subtitles as text generators in FCP.
Mind you, subtitling is very different from CC, so there will be some work.
(subtitles have two lines, while CC can go up to 4
Also, it's uncommon for subtitles to jump all over the screen.

Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 - Exporting Question

When exporting "save current frame" how come you don't always get to save your text as well. Just now I have saved a cover picture with text for uploading to you tube and no text. Did the same with another part of my timeline no problem. Both rendered, what is my problem. Has happen before to me. Come on brains trust.

What you have done:
You resized/transformed/cropped your video, right?
and your timeline indicates, you haven't put anything 'behind' that clip.
So, in theory, what's 'black' is transparent => which is not supported by jpg.
… this could confuse the encoder…
Add a full-frame generator 'behind' it, and your titles should appear....

Final Cut Pro X vs. iMovie

Hello, I just got my first Mac. I have been working on PCs for ages. I am not able to open any of my movie files from my HD Sony Video Camera. They are .MTS files. I have about 1400 files and still creating more weekly. My brand new Mac Mini came with iMovie. Therefore I installed it. However, if I am understanding the discussions on this site correctly, I should be using Final Cut Pro X. Therefore, my two questions are:
1. Will FCPX be able to easily work with my .MTS files without me having to convert them or manipulate them in any way?
2. Should I keep iMovie on my Mac or just go with Final Cut Pro?

iMovie 10 (the Mavericks version) does import 'bare' .mts files if they are 720 or 1080p and up to 60 fps (not sure about interlaced formats ). FCP does as well.
FCP 10.1 is quite similar to iMovie 10 in appearance but has much higher capabilities. You can download a free fully functional trial version from the App store that runs for a month. I did that and then bought it as a Christmas present to myself. It is very easy to transfer projects from iMovie 10 to FCP 10.1 so you can try out both with the same projects and decide whether the extra capabilities are worth $299 to you.

Final Cut Pro - Vanished?

I'm a graduate student in video art preparing for a big installation in less than a week, and this morning I go to open up my copy of Final Cut Pro and get the watermarked question mark of doom on the software's icon in the dock.
Where the heck did it go?
So of course, I look everywhere -- it seems to be nowhere to be found.
Any suggestions or ideas as to what might have happened?
I sure didn't uninstall it-- at least not to my knowledge!
The only recent major change I have made (within the past week) was to install the Adobe Creative Suite's Design Premium package. Could I have somehow nudged Final Cut Pro off of my computer during that process? But if so, how?
I'm totally confused, and concerned. I don't have my Final Cut Pro disks with me here (they're in another state and I'll probably have to see if I can get them overnighted to me).
Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated.
Could it still be hiding somewhere on my computer?? I can't find it anywhere.

That was one of the first things I checked. It's unfortunate-- the .fcp files don't know where to go. When I try to open them I get the indication that no specific program is available to open them, and then they ask which application to choose from. Final Cut is nowhere to be found.
I think it might be gone for good? My guess is that it was somehow deleted. I've no idea how or why (I really don't know how I could have done anything so foolish-- I use Final Cut all the time and it's the backbone, software-wise, of a lot of my creative projects, so.... not sure).
I hope there's nothing wrong with my hard drive?

Up to you. FCP 7 is dead...no longer to be updated or supported. FCX is the new app Apple is going with.
BETTER? Depends on what your workflows are, and if you like how it works. People's reactions are mixed. Try it out...you might like it. If not, you have other options.

Upgrade Question Final Cut Pro 5.0.4

I'm a bit confused and need clarification. I have Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. Can I download the upgrade to 5.1.4?
It won't let me download the update to 5.1.4 because my version is prior to FCP 5.1. When I go into the update for 5.0.4 and download it, the version number doesn't change on my computer. What should the update say?
Is there any way for me to get this 5.1.4 update? I want to use the new effects features! Please advise.

Thanks. As I am reading I am noticing that it will cost me $699 for the upgrade to 5.1 from 5.0.4. I thought that with a newer version I'd be able to get the crossgrade, but I didn't read close enough. It would figure that a promotion was stopped a week ago (and was open for a year and I didn't even notice) I'm upset, but what can I do? I'm not paying $699 for such a small upgrade. I'll wait until a newer version comes out or something.

I'm running OS X, but I can't run Final Cut Pro 1.0 and appropriate upgrade

I recently purchased a Macbook with OS 10.4.6 on it. I have Final Cut Pro 3, but I can only install it via FCP1 and upgrade to FCP2 and finally to FCP3. However, when I try to install 1.0, it says that this system cannot support it. I can't seem to figure out how to run Classic mode either.
So, my question is, what are my options to run this software? (I really do not want to purchase the newest software.) Also, I know someone who has FCP3 full version (not an upgrade); would it be possible to install this software and use one of the serial numbers from one of my other software disks? Any help would be great.

FCE is more limited but depending on your needs it might be fine

why do you feel you need to download an upgrade
after FCP 4 (3-4 years ago) you no longer needed an older version installed just the serial number as they discovered the problem that you are running into now
