Final Cut Pro HD on a MacBookPro

Can it be done? Will it be worth while or should I just get FCP express? I've got a g5 tower with the production suite that includes FCPHD, Motion, and DVDSP. I want a macbook pro and am just curious of whether or not i can put my FCP on there.

As a full time production unit it'll struggle, especially with Motion 2. While the Core 2 Duo processor used in the MBP is quite capable there are many levels on which a professional editor will find an MBP lacking… GPU performance, drive performance and capacity, memory bandwidth and capacity. All of which are essential to the video editor.
Ultimately, yes you can install and use FCS onto an MBP. Many do and many are happy with it. It really comes down to your own expectations and performance requirements.

  • I want to use my macBook Pro 2,2 (mid 2007) to display video being fed from a Canon 5D video out into the vectorscope in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.  Is it possible to input live video from another digital camera into the MacBookPro

I know that the built in iSight camera records video.  I want to set up a Canon 5D video camera and feed the Canon's video output into the MacBook Pro so that I can use the vectorscope in Final Cut Pro to adjust the exposure of the Canon 5D.  Basically I don't want to buy a vectorscope to have on set to make sure the picture is properly exposed and color balance is correct. (In your response it doesn't have to be the full scenario I've described.  If you can just tell me if there's a way to feed live video into the MacBook and display it on the screen and possibly record it, then I'll figure out the rest.)

    Dear Ben,
Thanks for your help. Apple and I dealt with this. It was an FCP, NOT Motion problem. As It seems you understand, we simply trashed my FCP prefs. Problem went right away.
Thanks. Do you live near Hammond? Played in a rugby tournment down there once. I was transformed.

  • HT201109 Final Cut Pro 10.1 crashes with Motion 5.1 custom Scrolling text and Graphics titles

    Dec 29, 2013 1:33 PM
found out why Final Cut 10.1 won't load my custom titles without crashing. When scrolling text in Motion 5.1 if you ad a graphic to scroll with the text Final Cut 10.1 will crash. If I remove the graphic in Motion and then load it into Final Cut 10.1 it will work.
So Graphics and scrolling do not work. The graphics are .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd. I don't know how to fix it. Hopefully someone out there does.

Thanks Tom for the advice. I have four external hard disks, all of them formatted with Mac OS Extended Journaled. On all devices (2TB) I have more than half free space. They are connected either with Thunderbolt or USB3 cables. Different manufactures:  LaCie, Toshiba, WD and Samsung. I face the same crash problem if I connect a UBS drive 16GB or a any other device to the USB ports including the Sony Video camera connected with a USB1 cable. Same problem on ALL my computers! To work properly, I have to disconnect all USB devices and work only with internal hard disks. I also tried to format the MacbookPro (erasing the partitions with a new installation) but I have the same problem. I really lost hope...

  • The best Mac laptop to use Final Cut Pro 4???

I don't know much about Macs and I know even less about Mac laptops! Someone told me that the macbook (Intel based??) would be the best mac laptop to use with Final Cut Pro 4. Could someone tell me if this IS my best option or if I should be looking for a powerbook? What specs do I need to be looking for? I know that I need a G4 or higher, but the memory, speed, etc... I'm clueless about...

Get a MacBookPro 17" and upgrade to FCP5.1
You need the 17" to get the firewire 800 port - necessary if you want to edit anything more than DV or HDV.
The upgrade from FCP4 to FCP5.1 is very inexpensive now (offer expires in mid December) and you would be very foolish to not do it.
    good luck.

  • Error Messge: Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a CPU type of G5

I recently updated my OS to 10.5.8. I also downloaded AVID codec for quicktime. Then, when I went to open FCP on my MacBook Pro (2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), I was hit with the error message Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a CPU type G5; this system has a CPU type of G4. I've never had a problem running FCP on this laptop. Any suggestions? Help!

Also, I found another person who posted with a similar problem and here's what he wrote, (but curiously, he doesn't state what the fix was to his problem).
After 1 and a half hours of support from Ireland it came out that some llibrary setting
was conflicting with the startup of FCP. Apple did not hear of this problem before. I wonder
how many macbookpro users have the same issue...

  • Final Cut Pro 10.1 Running Super Slow?

I have recently upgraded to Final Cut Pro 10.1 and its running incredibly slow. Before i upgrade i used to surf the web, be on iPhoto and Edit Video all day at the same time with no problems. Since Upgrading to 10.1 everything is at a crawling speed. When trying to type text. I literally need to type one letter at a time and wait one second for it to show up. and that is with only Final Cut Pro running and everything else shut off. Anyone else experiencing these problems? • I just finished a project in Final Cut Pro.  Looks good. BUT when I export it the slugs show as a red screen?

Final Cut Pro finished project looks good in FC but when I export The slugs appear as a Red screen  any ideas?

You certainly are new at this. That's cool, we all were new at one point.
You have a MacBookPro. That means you are using at least Mac OS X 10.5.6. Otherwise FCS 3 would not even install. You also should have QuickTime 7 installed. If you don't, it's in the Additional Installs folder  on the Mac OSX disc that came with your computer.
OS 2 is an ancient Microsoft/IBN product and doesn't run on a Mac and certainly won't run Final Cut.
Your camera shoots in AVCHD format. The files are MPEG 4 and should have been transcoded to ProRes LT for use in FCP. Your Sequence settings should also be ProRes LT to match the transcoded footage.
Your laptop is not a codec.
    Wiki definition:
A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal. word codec is a portmanteau of 'compressor-decompressor' or, more commonly, 'coder-decoder'. A codec (the program) should not be confused with a coding or compression format or standard – a format is a document (the standard), a way of storing data, while a codec is a program (an implementation) which can read or write such files. In practice "codec" is sometimes used loosely to refer to formats, however.
Don't export using QuickTime Conversion. Export as Self Contained with Current Settings (same as your FCP Sequence, which by now is hopefully ProRes LT. Import that file into iDVD.
Better yet, learn DVD Studio Pro and Compressor. Both are included in Final Cut Studio and will give you far more control and much better results.
Whilst your video is encoding, take the time to read the user manuals found in the menu bar under the Help item. They contain a wealth of information and you can amaze the teacher and fellow students with your new found knowledge.

  • Final Cut Pro dropped frame rate issue

Hi there, i currently shot a short film on the canon 5d mark II 30fps and i am trying to edit it in final cut studio 2. I have recently bought the new macbook pro 15inch 2gb module.
Now the canon footage is h.264 but when importing the clips into final cut pro 6 there is a lot of dropped frame rate issues but I thought this machine could handle HD footage?
Can someone more advanced than myself recommend what i am doing wrong or a work flow that i can work with to stop dropped frame rates and render times.
Last piece of information, the project will be entered in film festivals in the spring its only a 3 minute short and i have 5 folders of footage under 4gb each which was taken from the camera
    Thanks for your help.
    Michael

You are missing a huge conceptual point. If the file can not spool off of the hard drive fast enough, you get dropped frames. It isn't a processor or ram issue right now, it is a hard drive speed issue. Your system drive is overtaxed trying to run OSX, applications AND spool video. It just can't keep up. Changing the graphic card isn't going to help (and how do you change the card in a laptop?)
Get an external esata drive - with the new MacBookPro you'll need an esata Expresscard34 adapter for the computer to connect the drive. Firewire is not an option with that machine and USB2 will not cut it with high data rate formats like ProRes.
When you drop in the ProRes clip to the timeline and it tells you there is a mismatch, this means your preset for the timeline is something other than your clip. You WANT ProRes and you need the sequence to match your clip - tell the program to CHANGE the sequence to match the clip.
Video is not easy and it isn't inexpensive. Time to open up those manuals and your wallet!
    Good luck,

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1 and a Macbook

I am looking to buy Final Cut Studio. I was hoping to get some feedback on this question: Must you have a MacbookPro to run Final Cut Pro 5.1 (and the rest of Final Cut Studio), or will it run on a Macbbok without any problems? I would really like to hear from People who has actually have run Final Cut Pro 5.1 on a Macbook and what their experiences were. I know the Macbook does not have the ATI Mobilty Radeon X1600 graphics card like the MacBookPro does. So was that an issue for anyone?
      Other OS

    Here's Apple's official position: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303782
However, there are several people running most of the Studio Apps successfully ... except possibly Motion. With FCS2, chances are Color won't run either. You should be able to search here for similar postings; this topic comes up frequently.

  • Final Cut Pro on MacBook Pro 15"

    Hi,
I am thinking about getting the latest MacBookPro 15" (fully loaded) and would like to use my Final Cut Pro Studio.
Can anyone tell me if I will have the full use as in "Real Time rendering" etc... Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Live Type etc...
Using an older MacBooPro 17" I can not use Final Cut Pro on it since it really struggle with a graphic card not powerful enough for it.
    Thank you

i use fcs 3 on my 13" macbook pro and the only issue i run into is color does not play well with the smaller screen.
the best part is i use a second internal hd as my scratch drive and it works really well.
i don't use dvd studio pro, i master all discs on my mac pro, plus i no longer have an internal optical drive.

  • Does Final Cut Pro X replace Final Cut Pro 7???

    Hi -
I just got a new MacbookPro and it does not seem to want to let me install Final Cut Pro 7.   Maybe it's the 10.9 System?
It does let me use Final Cut Pro X, is that the newer version of FCP 7?   Will older projects load in FCP X?
I thought I tried this before and X would not load 7 projects.
    Thanks.

Final Cut Pro 7 was discontinued over 2 years ago and is no longer supported on new Macs  .  .  .  .  though it should still work.
    FCP X replaced it completely.
It is a totally different app and you can't swap projects (unless you buy a third party app for $9.99).

  • Mini-Dvi to Video out from Final Cut Pro working

Thanx Everybody for posting reply for my post regarding running video out to external TV from Final Cut Pro in MacBook.
    It's working fine.

@ Studio X : The files were originally created with Final Cut Pro, rendered out to QuickTime, then are being played back with Final Cut Pro. The file that has the most noticable studdering is a 60-minute timeline sequence in Final Cut. All files are being stored and played back from the Mac Mini's internal hard drive. Everything was originally shot on DV and formatted for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
@ Shane Ross : Are there any settings in the MacOS or FCP where I can improve the HDMI video signal? Or do you know of / have any experience with Firewire to HDMI converters? Unfortunately, my new signal path relies on HDMI from the video playback.
My current setup uses the Firewire output, which is then converted to composite video & analog audio using a pair of ageing DV tape decks. That setup is becoming troublesome due to age.

    Hi Shane,
Just one more quesiton re: this topic, I am looking to get rosetta but do not have Leopard or Snow Leopard...
I read that it is not on Snow Leopard only on Leopard....so do I need to get only Leopard? Can u advise?
Alternatively I do have Mac OS X Tiger so is it on this and can I install it from here?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge here, just trying to get my FCP 6 up and running asap....

  • How to use Final Cut Pro with multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I want to use Final Cut Pro on a clean user account. How do I set it up? How can I access my old FCP library and still work on it from multiple users?
Also, I want my DropBox account to back-up my media. Any tips?

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?

What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?
I have just started up a new project.
Every time I try to ad a clip in top of each other a "general error" shows up. The sequence viewer turned red and it displays that I have to close and reopen the window to restore.
The only "new thing" I do - is the use/brand of camera.
Now I use the canon D5 mark 3 for my project (before D5 mark 2)
What's wrong??? Do I need to update my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 And how do I do this???
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Did you use Log & Import?  Or did you at least convert the D5 files before importing?  FCP doesn't work with those files natively.
