While Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro might be similar in their feature sets, one thing that sets them apart is native codecs. While I've never personally used a Premiere PC, my workplace is a split-platform house, utilizing both PPro and FCP.
So another question to ask yourself prior to purchasing either platform is, "what format do I plan on editing?". For example, my production facility is incorporating XDCAM HD as our primary field acquisition format. Thanks to Sony's free PDZK-P1 Transfer App written specifically for FCP, XDCAM HD can be edited natively. On the other hand, Adobe currently offers no native support for XDCAM HD, and has no plans to offer native support in the near future. They are relying strictly on 3rd party solutions, which can get really costly. Matrox Axio is a $4000 hardware-based solution for PPro. Quite a steep price to pay for "native editing".
Just make sure you do your homework prior to any purchase.

    The newer version of Final Cut Pro X is substantially faster at exporting my movie than the older version.  But Premiere is still faster than it is.  Also, Apple still can't get the whole "edit the source footage raw" bit right; my source footage is all spanned-clip AVCHD, with files that are over 4G a piece.  FCPX can't just open those raw, it insists on putting a MOV wrapper around the footage.  There's no transcoding happening, but the file I/O for those massive files slows the whole process down significantly.
    Because I don't have years of experience editing with NLEs, I'm not married to any particular UI.  FCPX's UI is ... strange, but I didn't find it too difficult to become used to it.  If it were faster and more efficient for what I do, I'd reconsider it.  But for now, it's all Premiere.

    I just bought my first Apple computer and I'm loving it. I have worked with Final Cut Pro in the past and I really enjoy working with it. However, $1000 is a bit steep. I would like to ask what your opinions are on maybe getting Final Cut Express or Adobe Premiere Pro.
    I have the trial of Adobe Premiere right now, but whenever I place a clip into the timeline, it needs to be rendered. This was never an issue with Final Cut on the computers at my school. I was wondering if you knew if Final Cut Express would have better rendering times and wouldnt need as much rendering. Also, it may be the graphics card in my computer. If you think this is the problem, can you provide me with a solid video/graphics card that I should look into?

    I own all three programs actually - here's my advice.
    Stay the heck away from Adobe Premiere. It is no where nearly as Mac friendly and for the price, just isn't worth it. I purchased it for the Blu-ray authoring capabilities of Encore, so that's all I use it for. The plus to Premiere is that it can edit some native formats that Final Cut Pro cannot. For example, native AVCHD as well as MPEG-2 in program streams. That being said, Encore is the best option for Blu-ray authoring at a reasonable cost that gives you the ability to modify menus, etc.
    Final Cut Express is a great application - my only reason for having final cut pro was my need to edit footage at 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. FCE only handles 29.97 (and 25 fps). Final Cut Pro also gives you the ability to edit more footage natively. FCE only supports DV, HDV, and AVCHD, with the latter two being transcoded into Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. FCP supports a myriad of formats and allows native editing in HDV - although it still transcodes AVCHD. FCP also gives you access to the ProRes set of codecs which are significant improvements on Apple Intermediate Codec that offer high quality in transcoding and editing.
    So the real question is, what are you going to be doing?

  • Switching from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Premiere

    Hi everyone,
    Hopefully there are others here who have made this switch and can offer me thoughts and advice. I have for the past few years used the Final Cut Pro suite as my video authoring media. It's done a great job editing and compressing my videos, so I could burn them to DVD, but the time has come for me to start burning to blu-ray. The problem is, DVD Studio Pro does not support blu-ray (something I discovered after buying the burner, etc).
    After some research, it seems that Adobe Encore is the only software I've found that people recommend for blu-ray authoring on the iMac. Is this true? If I buy Adobe Premiere, will it edit, compress, does it have a color program - basically, will it do everything I've been using Final Cut for, or will I need to move files between the two programs (if they even support this?)
    Anyone with experience in using both programs or just making the switch, please comment with any advice. I'd appreciate it before I take the plunge on another expensive suite of software.

    You can download a trial version. I tried it some time ago and I can only use one word "boring" sorry I can not explain this feeling in a more concrete way.

  • Final Cut Pro Vs. Adobe Premiere Elements 9 output quality.

    Hey Group.
    I am trying to edit some Sony 1920X1080 30i AVCHD footage and have had some quality problems while exporting FCP footage with QT exports (all footage logged and transferred into FCE with the proper setting that match the footage, etc as chronicled in other entries I have already discussed in other entries within this forum). My final footage was always coming out jittery and motion was never smooth and the "HD video" it produced looked amateurish and very computer generated looking. As a last ditch experiment, I decided to give a trial to Adobe Premiere Elements 9, which edits native AVCHD footage. When I exported a trial test, I was amazed to see this program exported the footage with a look that was exactly the same as the source HD footage from the camera, when played back on my WD HDTV Plus. My question is: what am I doing wrong in FCP? Is it because Premiere edits the footage natively rather than the conversion codecs FCP uses? Just seeing if anyone has any clues to this strange phenomenon. I certainly know for sure I like the workflow in FCP way better than in Adobe....Any ideas would be great. Thanks

    Okay, so here's my settings for my project...
    To begin with, my output is to a WD HDTV Plus which needs a H.264 1920X1080i30 file.
    The source footage is SONY AVCHD 1080i60.
    My Import Prefs:
    AVCHD: Apple ProRes422
    AC-3 Audio: Plain Stereo
    RT:
    Both Dynamic Playbacks
    Unlimited RT
    Exported using QuickTime Conversion:
    Compression: H.264
    Frames:
    Current
    Key Frames:
    Every 24
    Compressor Quality: Best
    Data Rate: Automatic
    When it gets played back, still elements look "HD" but moving objects are jittered....HELP!

    Hi friends i'ven reading your coments and my conclusions are CS5 is faster and has the same features and quality than FCP, i like to ask to Studio X if you know more FCP and you are a pro why? with facts because if i have to buy or say to a friend or client go and use one or another with real facts.
    Example FCP has better color calibration, better final quality, more features or so.
    Another curious thing is that jhon 1 in 2 said is better AVCHD compatibility or handle these are to consistent points that i can undertand as a normal person.
    I can understand a  point if you can say me why FCP is better with examples because i know much of hardware but a little of this software, i can give a big point to a software tha can use mi machine at full capacity because if i spend 10K$ in a computer i'd like a blazing fast one, if not is better to spend only 2.5K$ and wait the same amount of time for the same results.
    Sorry for my english i'm not from USA so my vocabulary is short.

  • Final Cut Pro XML from Premiere Generates Blank EDL Spreadsheet from Online Widgets

    Using CS6, I am trying to create a spreadsheet based off a Final Cut Pro XML generated from Premiere Pro.  I upload the XML to two different widgets (one of which being http://192.168.3.232/ingest/uploadFile.php), but then the spreadsheet that generates is blank, except for titles at the top of the columns (such as "Track #", "Shot #", etc. for this EDL).  I've used these widgets to create EDL spreadsheets numerous times before, using both CS6 and CC, and this is the first time they've created blank spreadsheets. 
    Any help you could give would be much appreciated!

    Sort of a work around I am testing:
    I have a cool script to open FCPro projects in AE. Sort of a free Automatic Duck.  I was going to do this:
    Remove all effects and proprietary tracks in FCPro, as some cause problems with this script. Trial and error here.
    Use the free script FCP2AE to export to AE (it's hard to find now)
    Open the timeline in AE via the script FCP2AE
    Export that from AE as PPProCC 2014 project
    Open in PPCC2014
    That may work, it may also work just to remove all effects and then save the XML and open in PP CC 2014. Again sometimes it does work. The simpler the FCPro project the better.
    Another option
    I was able to open the FCPro audio only OMF in Audition. Then I exported via XML FCPro format from Audition and this opened the audio tracks in PPCC2014. The stereo tracks were broken and placed on two mono tracks so you'll have to address that one.

    In the past I used Premiere Pro 1.5. When my project was finisched i wrote it back to tape as a Microsoft DV avi file. Is it possible to create a Microsoft DV avi file in Final Cut Express ?
    I'll aske this because this tape is transported to the studio and imported into Adobe Premiere 6.0.

    Once it's on tape it's back in DV format and is no longer an AVI or .mov or any other computer format. If the material is put back on tape it can be captured from the camera or deck into Premiere in whatever format that uses.

  • Final Cut Pro vs. Premiere

    Hi everyone,
    I'm about to invest in pro video software, but wanted to make sure I'm making the right decision before I do. I'm not a professional editor, but I want to be able to add chapters, titles, effects, etc. to home movies and old school play videos just for fun. I'm looking at "pro" software (as opposed to something like iMovie) because I'm a graphic designer (print) and want the creative flexibility of designing my own titles. I was planning to get Premiere simply because of my familiarity with Photoshop and I figured that there's synergy between the two. Also, I know it comes with Encore, and making cool DVD menus is one of my biggest priorities. I have no familiarity with either Final Cut or Premiere so I'd be learning either one from scratch. Can someone please summarize what the main differences are between the two? Does Final Cut have a DVD counterpart like Premiere has Encore? Why would I be better off with one than the other? It's an expensive investment either way so I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision. (I have a G4 tower now but am about to get a sparkly new 3.06GHz iMac, if that matters.)

    FCS2 includes FCP, LiveType, Color, DVDSP, SoundTrack Pro, Compressor and Motion.
    And Adobe CS4 Production Bundle comes with a slew of things as well...After Effects, Encore, Soundbooth, Photoshop, Illustrator, On Location, Flash.
    Color alone sold individually for thousands of dollars before it was bundled.
    That is designed for colorists and can be intimidating as ****. But yeah, it is good. After Effects comes with COlor Finesse I believe, and that is good.
    You have to look at both and see if they do what you want. Want to burn BluRay DVDS? Need Encore. And yes, if you are familiar with Photoshop, it might be easier for you to use.

  • Creating Blu-Ray DVD with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Encore

    Hi all,
    I am one of many with troubles creating a blu-ray DVD using Mac software. Sounds like the best way to do this is to do all of the editing in Final cut and create the DVD in Adobe Encore. Is there a way to export to Adobe Encore or should I just create a .mov file and import that to Encore. That way I think I lose the HD quality. I read that I could compress to Blu-ray format in Compressor, but I can only find HD DVD which is different. When I select create a Blu-Ray disc, Compressor won't simply create the file on my computer...it wants the disc to create.
    Maybe I am a little to new at this to fully understand, but why in the heck doesn't Apple get with the times and create a DVD authoring program that makes Blu-Ray?

    I have just completed my first blu-ray disc using FCP7 and Adobe encore. My workflow, once the timeline was complete, was to go to File>share>choose blu-ray as destination >export. The default encoding is H.264 along with an ac3 file for audio. It took 3 hours and 35 minutes to encode the 1hr 26 minute file.
    Opening encore, confirming you settings for HD, and choosing file>import>as asset each of the files (separately, of course). Encore imports them, then under Timeline>create new, then drag the files to the timeline. CLick on the build button and you are there. I did not mention that my original render was Prores422, but that should not matter here. No trouble with burning the Verbatim 25Gb disc.
    Encore will recognize that these files do not need re-encoding and burn the disc. It took 1 hour and 40 minutes to burn a 1 hour and 26 minute (17+ Gb) movie on an i7 iMac with an OWC 12x BD burner.

    I have a macbook, and i need to do a crap load of final cut/ premiere rendering, and i need to get a external for the capture scratch and ect.
    But what i want to know is, what one to use? USB or Firewire 400,
    I was originally gonna get a LaCie Rugged, cuass its buss powered and extremely portable, but my friends told me, seeing ive got only one firewire port, im gonna have to get something like the 320gb o5 500gb LaCie, which has two firewires on the hard drive, although its not that portable.
    So i asked, why cant i get a USB external, that was a dumb thing to ask. They gave me reasons like USB speed isn't constant, not secure stuff like that.
    So what should i do, and which is the best one to get?

    Don't know about PPro.
    For FCP, you really should have FW. The problem you'll run into, is that the Mac Book only has 1 FW bus. It doesn't matter how many ports the computer or external have, they will all run on the same FW bus. And I don't believe the MacBook has the capability of using an Express34 card (or any other FW expandability). I could be wrong, but don't think so.
    One solution is to capture directly to your internal harddrive, then copy the files over to the external FW drive. Others have posted about daisy-chaining your camera/deck through the external FW drive, but I've not done that and can't tell you how.
    Even capturing to the internal may not work, depending on what format you're capturing.
    Hang around for other possible solutions and search this forum for 'capturing to Mac Book' or some such language.

    and yes, USB delivers content in packets vs. a continuous stream using FW. FW is the way to go. You might have success with USB, but you'll be lucky. Try to get FW 800 if you can.

  • Final Cut Pro X to Premiere CS6 workflow destroys FCP X events

    Hello,
    I just got a call by a customer who tried to convert and FCP X project via XML to Premiere CS6 for a further AfterEffects workflow. He experienced the following problem, which I can rebuild completely. These are the steps:
    1 - Export an FCP X project which relinks to transcoded optimized media to XML
    2 - Convert the XML (.fcpxml) with Xto7 app to legacy XML (.xml) format
    3 - Open Premiere CS6 and import the XML (.xml)
    4 - Close Premiere CS6 and open FCP X and the exported project
    FCP X warns immediately that something has been modiefied. This is just an information which I can only accept. All the clips that were optimized are reded out and marked "Modified File". Now do the follwing:
    5 - Try to relink the modified media and chose the optimized media file in the transcoded media folder
    As soon as you accept the relink FCP X deletes the file in the event library and ALSO in the Original Media folder AND in the Transcoded Media folder and moves both files to the trash. This could be destructiv, if you are working on a SAN storage, like an EditShare system.
    But even if you are able to restore the files and move them back in place, there seems to be no chance to relink the files in FCP X to make your project working again. As soon the relink comand is executed the files will be moved to the trash again. If I do not try to relink, the files keep marked red and as Modified Media. If you have a look in the metadata, you will see, that they have been modified by Premiere, which seems to cause the trouble.
    Does anyone has a workaround or working handover to AfterEffects? Or does anyone else encounter similar problems with XML or third party apps destroying metadata within FCP X files?
    Appreciate all solutions!
    Btw: This only affects transcoded media. Every time I worked with original media only, the handover to Premiere works undestructive, but the media was pending in Premiere until the app crashs.

    Finally I solved the problem by myself, doing a deeper web research.
    Actually it's Premiere CS6 or AfterEffects which adds some metadata to the clips, that causes FCP X to ignore those files and shows them as "Modified media". But - and that's the good thing - you can turn off this behaviour in AfterEffects or Premiere. Here is how:
    In AfterEffects
    go to Preferences > Media & Disk Cache and uncheck the boxes refering to the XMP metadata
    In Premiere
    go to Preferences > Media and uncheck the box "Write XMP ID to Files on Import"
    Those XMP metadata help CS6 to share media cache files and previews and may improve stability and performance but if you are in a more FCP X based workflow, deactivating this option may prevent from loosing media.
    A fast check with the same procedure discribed above went well and everything stays untouched and online in FCP X.

  • Alpha Channel issue Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere Pro & FCP X

    I have an Apple Pro Res 4444 file that is not read in Premiere Pro as having an Alpha Channel.
    The file was not was not automatically detected. But it was read in FCP 7 as having an Alpha Channel after I changed the preferences in to Alpha Type 'Straight'.
    After I sent the XML data to FCP X and Premiere Pro they would not recogise the alpha channel even though I changed the preferences.

    I agree - it is just that currently Premiere Pro does not display the transparency of the file in the viewer by showing checkerboard where the file is transparent, like FCP can do. It always shows the clip over black. If you are used to seeing the transparency this might throw you off.
    Next version of Premiere fixes this, and displays checkerboard where the file is transparent.

    Well, there are three key differences.
    1. FCP is Mac only.  Premiere Pro is Widows or Mac.
    2. FCP is more limited in the formats it supports.  PP will edit just about any standardized camera format without requiring conversion.
    3. FCP 7 is no longer being sold.  Premiere Pro CS6 is.
    Beyond that, either is likely to get the job done, if you know what you're doing.
