Final Cut Pro Training Suggestions/Recommendations

Looking for suggestions for a great FCP instructor/class, but not super expensive. Have had three years of basic use, including green screen with Chromakeyer but all very, very basic skills, nothing fancy. Want to review these basics and move to the next level. A high school teacher trying to facilitate for students who learn more quickly and intuitively.Have looked at the Apple Pro series, but closest locations are over 1000 miles away.

Does it have to be a face-to-face class? What about self-paced training?

  • Final Cut Pro Training NY

I was looking into an Apple Certification for FCP6 and there a few authorized centers here in the NYC area and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them in terms of quality? Soho Editors, The Edit Center and the Manhattan Edit Workshop in particular.
    Any info would be helpful.

For training in FCPX there are lots of choices. Here are a few I've found to be good:
    - Izzy Video's 26 part free tutorial  http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial-completed/
    - Steve Martin & Mark Spencer https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL607BE2B2BFE9BE1A
    - Denver Riddle tutorials on Color Grading V http://www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/477-a-free-fifteen-part-course-on-colo r-grading-within-fcpx
There are lots of courses available from Ripple Training, Creative Cow, Larry Jordan, Lynda.com, John Lynn and many others.
Books are another great source. Personal favorite is Tom Wolsky's FINAL CUT PRO X
http://www.amazon.com/Final-Cut-iMovie-Express-Users/dp/0240823664 Tom is our resident guru and always available to provide advise on how to sort out our FCPX problems - an outstanding resource!
These suggestions barely scratch the surface of all that's available online and in print but should get you started and editing quickly.
    Enjoy.

  • Final cut pro tutorial dvd - recommendations

    Hi,
I am looking for some advice, i would like to get final cut pro tutorial on dvd, aimed at an absolute beginner , i would appreciate any recommendations.
    thanks in adviance

My first course of action is to buy the longest (most hours) DVD tutorial sets I can. Then I generally go back and buy one or more additional sets. Why? B/c programs like FCP are so complex that there are many different ways to do the same thing. The more time I spend watching the tutorials, the less time I waste in the long run trying to figure out how to do such and such a thing.

  • Final Cut Pro Training

I am currently looking to get Apple certified on FCP. The training classes will cost me around $3800. My question, is it worth it??? If I can achieve a Apple Certification in FCP, will that help me with my career and job search??? Would anyone suggest a better training program other than Future Media Concepts?

    Hi Ernest,
I'm not certified yet either, but am considering it. Unless you're in a big hurry, and don't know the material that well, I would just use the Apple Pro Training Series books to train for the test and then pay to take it (the testing fee varies, but costs $150 where I am) at a nearby testing center. That will save you quite a bit of money.
If you haven't looked at apple's page on the training, you might want to check it out: http://www.apple.com/software/pro/training/enduser.html
I think you'll find a variety of opinions on how useful a certification is. It may depend on what sort of work you want to do. Personally, I'm thinking it's worth the $150 to be able to put it on your resume.

  • WOW Final CUT PRO Training DVDS! MORE? How to keep QT open (on top) more?

1st of, I've seen the Lynda training for FCP but really enjoy the training DVD's with the surfer (Into The Blue)...
Where can I get more training video DVD's with files like this to help me and build a reel?
Also, part II, is there a way if using a MBP to keep QT DVD ontop so I don't have to keep APPLE TAB to get back to the training DVD? My work flow is follow along and pause DVD then go back, etc.
    Thanks!
I am prediciting with OctoMACS due out next year or end of this year, FCP is going to make a splash in some of the AVID marketshare (most of television work that I have seen)..and want to get a jump on FCP.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to also know as mentioned above, some good books with DVD and project files thanks!

You can turn off a preference in FCP's user prefs, to bring all windows to front on activation. That way only the windows you click on come in front of the DVD player.
But probably a better way to handle the problem is to use the tab+apple key to bounce back and forth between the two apps. Try that...
My book will work just fine in FCP 5, comes with a ton of media to work with, and will hone your skills I think.
Also Apple's Pro Training series is much the same, and are written well. I'm working now on a training DVD...

  • Apple final cut pro training and cet

the station i work at is willing to send me and another fcp editor to universal in orlando for some advanced fcp training.
has anyone gone to any of this workshops? how were they? are they worth it?
    thanks
    carl

Save the money and buy plug ins or more RAM.
I disagree. You will save the employer's money and he will keep the plugins and RAM. If you get formal training (which includes Apple Certification after a rigorous test) at the station's expense it will be yours forever.
I went for a five-day course in The Edit Center in New York - excellent. I have no idea how good the course in Orlando is. Apple Store sends its employees to The Edit Center which sounds like a strong recommendation.
    Enjoy the course!

  • Using Final Cut Pro?

I'm pretty decent at using Imovie for the Mac, and i'm thinking this may be something I could enjoy doing, but I would like to take some classes. I eventually want to get final cut studio, and seen they have final cut pro training classes, but I think one needs to already be a video editor in order to take those classes. Do community colleges have video editing classes or certificates? What type of classes do you suggest I take? I wouldn't mind doing weddings, and other types of events.

    Hi
There is a big leap from iMovie to FCP !
What I had to understand was how material was handled - iMovie does this so clever
(at least up to HD6 version)
    Then I bought Tom Wolskys - DVD-course

  • What's so good about Final Cut Pro?

Hi everyone, I am totally new to Macs, switching over from the PC. And so far, I have to say that I honestly enjoy the Macs a lot more than the PC's. With that being said, my wife's friend was telling us that we should invest in Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The problem is we know nothing about the two programs other than photoshop is obviously working with photos and final Cut has something to do with movies.
So can someone please tell us whats so good about these two programs. And if we were to buy them, is there some sites that offer good tutorials to learn how to operate each of them?

A quick tour of Final Cut Pro can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
    and Final Cut Express here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/
There are paid tutorials found at Lynda.com. And a smattering found ALL OVER THE PLACE...some on the Creative Cow:
    http://library.creativecow.net/tutorials/applefinalcutpro
But those are advanced ones for people already familiar with FCP. The ones on Lynda.com are for beginners through experts. And there are books:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Final-Cut/dp/0321502655/ref=pdbbs_sr1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241043298&sr=8-1

    And a REALLY good one:

  • Final Cut Pro working very sluggish, any suggestions ?

Hello everybody, I've been using Final Cut Pro for a very long time now. Although I've had this problem lately, when the smooth cam analyzation finishes. Final Cut pro ( the Video which was analyzed successfully ), starts working very slow. Something so small as a cut even take like 30 seconds to complete. I'm using a MacBook Pro 17" 3.06 ghz, 8gb 1067 MHz DDR3 ram and connected to a Firewire 800 hard drive that has 7,200 rpm rotational speed. I've tried trashing the preferences and reinstalling Final Cut ( I have the latest version ), but nothing helps. Maybe I need to render all of the video or something, does anyone have any suggestions or any kind of help ? ( Thank You ahead of time ).

The only way that would work out is if you ran exactly the versions that were made for old PowerBooks. Anything newer may require Intel and not run, or will strain the poor old G4 CPU.
Your needs have to be modest, too, because the problem with older music and video software is that they are not current as far as formats and codecs for the Web. If you want to output H.264, the current standard for YouTube/Flash video, older software may not support it, and in addition, H.264 is processor-intensive and is tailor-made for today's multi-core, 2+ GHz processors. It will overwhelm a G4. A PowerBook G4 can barely play YouTube videos.
More perspective: The PowerBooks worked great for miniDV format editing. In other words, 480i SD/standard definition video in use from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. If that is all you want to do, edit tape from an old miniDV camera to SD output, then OK.
But if you want to edit today's HD video, whether 720p from a snapshot camera/iPhone 4 or 1080p from a DSLR, the PowerBook and the software for it will either not recognize AVCHD/H.264, or it will slow the PowerBook to a dead crawl.
I'm in agreement with the above: Intel Macs have been out for so many years that getting a used one is a much better deal than a dead-end PowerBook. And I loved (still love) my PowerBooks.

  • In Final Cut Pro x, Somehow my video got muted and I can't find a way to UNMUTE it! (it won't let me manually lift up or down the waveform - nor go in and raise the level of loudness) Any suggestions? (How to unmute)

You can't run iMovie 11 on a PPC G5 running the old OS 10.3 Panther - which is what you say you have.

  • Does anyone know how to change .mov to a supported file extension (and what extension would you suggest)? .mov works on Apperture 3.0 so I thought it would work on Final Cut Pro X....

Does anyone know how to easily change a .mov file extension to one of the accepted Final Cut Pro X extensions?  I thought since .mov worked in Aperture 3.0 it should work on FCP X.  Thanks

    Hi Tom
    Thanks
I am now doing some 1 minute import tests from various Q/T's
They are all in the same place on an External 1 TB Western Digital - connected by Firewire 800
I have just imported some 1 minute tests from  other Q/T 's and they have imported Ok - quickly imported and transcoded etc fine and quickly.
Using your suggested methd of getting the details using Quicktime 7 Movie Inspector I can see NO DIFFERENCE in the formats!  In fact with four of these files open I can click on each in turn and see the Inspector details for each in turn - and only the name, size etc changes - not the format!
I am really upset and confused by this as I have been trying for the last four days to get these imported.  I realise that this is small potatoes to those who are having problems with even FCP 7 Files!  But, these are q/t's of 30 hours worth of unique reserahc material I shot in Africa. I have made several programmes from this material before (one even shown on Discovery!)  I WAS hoping that I could use the new and all singing FCPX to make some new programmes for teaching purposes
But, how can I do that if only some will import?  As I posted elsehwre - i get the message "No importable files"
I am REALLY grateful for your expertise and advice here
    thanks
    Alan
    PS  I am using Lion

  • Anyone study Apple Pro Training Series SP 2 without Final Cut Pro app?

    Hi Guys,
I have Soundtrack Pro 2. It came with the Logic Pro Studio bundle. I want to get the certification for SP 2. I just opened the SP 2 Apple Pro Training Series book and the first directions are to open +Final Cut Pro+ to convert the .fcp file in the lesson folder to a .stmp file to use in SP 2.
I don't have Final Cut Pro. Am I dead in the water? How does someone who got SP 2 via purchasing Logic Pro Studio follow this book, since Final Cut Pro doesn't come with the Logic bundle?
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light!

I'm checking back in here and bumping this thread up hoping someone from Apple might throw in a reply here. I've spent the last few days on the net seeking out anyone else who ran into this problem and I've discovered there are quite a few others running into this issue. How is someone who purchased STP with Logic Studio supposed to get certified? Why doesn't Apple let people know about this before they purchase the product? If they weren't aware of it before (I've been told Apple has now been notified of the issue), why isn't Apple addressing this and providing a workaround?
    Anyone from Apple out there?
