Final cut pro with imac g5 (older version)

I purchased an imac g5 about a year ago. I've upgraded the RAM to 768 and thats about it. I want to install final cut pro. I know I need to upgrade the RAM to at least 1 gig and get more hard drive space. Is there anything else i should do? Any precautions?

I had all sorts of problems bus sharing my DV (or HDV) camera with an external FW Drive, although I never tried plugging the camera into the drive itself - but you do have two options:
1) Capture using the internal drive.
2) Use a USB2 interface for the external drive.
I found both workable, some people have had trouble with USB2 drives, but I find the interface is faster than the base drive speed for single stream work - your mileage may vary. I am using the Lacie triple interface drive.
Use the system profiler to work out which USB port is not shared with any other, because if you have your mouse / keyboard or Bluetooth adaptor on the same internal hub as the drive, they will all be reduced to USB1.1 - and you definitely can't capture to that. I found one port on the powerbook was on its own bus, one was shared with the BT adaptor - go Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info to run the profiler, or run it from Applications -> Utilities.

Has anyone experienced difficulties getting analog video through an AJA IO LA into an iMac? Control panel on AJA reads no video in or out & when Final Cut is launched I keep getting the following error message: "Unable to open specified video output device, may be in use by other applications, incorrectly connected or may be conflicting with a sound input device." If I continue into Final Cut, I am unable to capture and also have received the following error message: "An Error occurred while configuring QuickTime using the current capture preset. I have no experience with the product you are using, but after looking at their website and the system requirements, it occurred to me that they only mention Power PCs and OS X Panther or later. So the problem might be that their hardware/software is not compatible with Snow Leopard, which included major changes. Have you tried contacting them to ask if your particular model is compatible with an Intel Mac and 10.6?

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

Can I transfer a project from the trial version of Final Cut Pro X to the Full version which I have now downloaded.

The trial version is named "Final Cut Pro Trial" and the App Store version is called "Final Cut Pro".
So, they can both be in the Applications folder at the same time, but only one can be open/launched at a time.
If, for some reason, your trial is older (like version 10.0.4) that your newly purchased FCPX (should be 10.0.5), and you do not click Update to your events/Projects, they will NOT show in the bought version!
Open the licensed FCPX and make sure it does update your things, in case it asks for it!

How to minimize Final Cut pro with one click?

I know you can minimize windows (canvas, timeline, etc) by pressing Command+M 4 times but how to minimize Final Cut pro with one click?

Hold down the Option key and click the Minimize button on any window, all windows in the app will minimize.
Don't know what or if the reverse of this is - so although it's a one click minimize all windows, I believe you have to re-enlarge them one at a time.

Hi,
I own Final Cut Pro (ver 1.0 and ver 2.0 update) for a DV iMac (OS 9.1) but never used it.
I now have an eMac running Tiger (OS X ver 10.4) and I'd like to install Final Cut Pro.
When I tried to install the software on the eMac, the installer looked for an OS 9.1 folder on the eMac.
Can I run this older version of Final Cut Pro on my eMac?

Final Cut Pro with a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro

I have an older Power Mac G4 that I have upgraded from 400Mhz to 1.4Ghz and a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card. I recently bought Final Cut Pro 2.0 and do not want to upgrade the video card yet again. Does anyone know of any work around to get Final Cut Pro to work on this computer?

Any work around at all would be great. ATI told me to upgrade to 9600 AGP or 9800 AGP. I am not even sure the 9800 AGP will work on this vintage Power Mac.

It looks like http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html you will be able to run the basic Final Cut Pro program but, obviously, its not going to scream. Many of the individual elements of the suite i.e. Motion, Color, are not going to function as they should without a significant boost in several things, memory, processor speed, video card.
In all honesty, you should be running FCP 4.5 or 5.0 which will run very well with your hardware. But since you already have FCS2, (I assume that's what you mean, not really Final Cut 2) hang on to it for when you decide to do what all of us eventually will have to do; buy an Intel based box.
My G5 is fast approaching obsolete, and I'm just waiting for the next version of Final Cut Suite to see how much box I need to go to. Didn't think this time 19 months ago I would be saying that... but time does roll on.

I just downloaded the Final Cut Pro Final (trial) but it says I cannot use "this version of the application.. with this version of Mac OS X". I am using version 10.5.8. Is there a different FCP application that I can download or a Mac OS software update or what exactly do I need to do to run some version of this program?

Your camera shoots AVCHD which is not an editing codec, so you'll need to convert your footage in ingest (ProRes LT or 422). Have a look at Shane Ross' tutorial on tapeless workflows:

You will also need a fast external hard disk with FW800 connection (that will be your scratch disk).
I can't tell you what recording mode you should set but don't mix them if possible.

Importing SWF into Final Cut Pro with no Background

Hi Everyone:
I've created an animated macromedia .swf file and imported
into Final Cut Pro successfully just as an .swf file. I can see the
.swf file animate in Final Cut Pro, the only problem is there is a
white background along with my animation. I've seen many slighly
related threads to this problem, but no end solution or work
around. any help? here's what i've seen in posts and other forums:
- create another layer below your object and place a
tranparent color swatch box the size of your stage size
- export the flash file as .mov with an alpha channel
transparency
- export the flash file as a .mov with an alpha channel, then
open in quicktime pro, then re export again as a quicktime movie
with the "Millions +" option.
- i've also heard something about having the right codecs, or
purchasing some other 3rd part software.
none of these approaches have worked for me. My Dream would
be to just import the .swf file straight into Final Cut Pro. I've
been exporting my flash movies as a png sequence and importing
every image into FCP for the time being. I'm also thinking about
just making the background bright green, because i think i just
chroma key it out, but i'm not sure how clean this will be.

How to use Final Cut pro with external hard drive?

I have too little space on my computer so I have to use final cut pro x with an external hard drive, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in and Final cut going, my computer goes very slow. I just upgraded to 16gb ram... but can't seem to run FCP x while an external hard drive is plugged in. FCP just freezes up and I have to force quit.

In addition to the excellent advice to keep your media on an external HDD, you need to make sure that your system (boot) drive has a decent amount of free space if you want to have a satisfactory editing experience. You don't need to "delete everything". Rather, you first figure out what needs to be moved. You copy those files to the other drive and then verify that all the files you copied are in two locations. At that point you can delete those files from your boot drive.
