Final Cut Pro with Sony PMW-EX1 HD camera

I am about to purchase the new Sony PMW-EX1 camera that I plan to use with my MacPro.
For those who use that camera, could you advise if my current version of Final Cut Studio 1 paired with Mac OS 10.4.10 will work fine with this camera when capturing the clips from the SxS card and editing the clips with FCP. Or is it strongly advisable to get Final Cut Studio 2 and/or the new Leopars OS environment?

Jerry,
The only program to transcode the EX series mp4 files is ffmpegX, ffmpegX.com Compressor doesn't work with these files, "Error trying to open source media file."
You can open the transferred file (that is re-wrapped as a QuickTime .mov) with Compressor to transcode to DVC ProHD, but then you could just use MPEG Streamclip as it is much faster and easier and can batch transcode many clips at one time. www.squared5.com
And again you need FC 6.0.2 to edit with the XD Cam EX series codec.
Working with EX series XD Cam HQ recorded files produces many files inside the BPAV folder that are needed for what various NLE's and computer platform you are working with. You will need the 2.7 XD Cam Transfer software to convert the raw XD Cam files to a QuickTime .mov to edit in Final Cut. With file based media you must use a well organization file system and learn to guard the BPAV folder only placing it inside a separate folder of it's own and naming it properly for archiving. This BPAV folder must never be place with any other BPAV folders and must always be kept in a separate folder to work properly with the XD Cam Transfer software. To work in Final Cut you are going to use the XD Cam Transfer software that makes new .mov files and you must find a place for them to be stored as well. At the end of your edit you have choices to either keep both the raw XD Cam files (mp4) and the new Quicktime .mov files, I keep them both or if I don't have the storage room I keep the raw, this allows me the ability to work on any software platform (PC or Mac) later. You can use the new Clip Browser version to transcode to other codecs and to prepare for SD DVD archiving.

  • How to import MXF files to Final Cut Pro with smooth editing

Summary: Follow this tutorial to learn how to import and edit MXF files in Final Cut Pro by converting MTS to FCP native format.
If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a
great video format to record high-definition videos, it is not easy to
use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.
Along with some help from a top MXF Converter, it can be done. To
help those who wanna edit MXF files in FCP without problems, here I
share with you a simple guide on how to convert MXF files to edit in
Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X.
First of all, downloading the App- Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac
Overall, the program is a professional yet easy-to-use MXF Converter
on Mac (Mavericks included) which can not only convert XF100, Canon
C300, XF105 and XF305, Panasonic P2 recorded MXF files, but also provide
simple video editing functions for you. The MXF to FCP Converter not
only can convert MXF to ProRes for FCP, but also can transcode MXF
videos for editing in Avid MC, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, FCE, etc.
Just download it and follow the tutorial below to get the work done.
Transcoding (P2) MXF files to ProRes for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X
    1. Import MXF files to the converter
Launch the best MXF to FCP Converter, and then click the “add files” button to browse and import MXF videos from your camcorder or hard drive.
    2. Select FCP editable format
Click the Format bar, and move mouse cursor to choose “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as output format.
    Tips:
    a. Settings- click to set video
    resolution(1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate (from 1Mbps to
    20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p)
    b. Editor (next to “Add” icon)- click to set deinterlace, trim, crop, add effect, attach subtitles, etc
    3. Start transcoding MXF video to FCP
Click “Convert” button to start converting MXF files to Apple ProRes
MOV for FCP 6/7/X under Mac OS. Once the MXF to ProRes 422 conversion
is done, you can transfer MXF footage into Final Cut Pro (X) for editing

  • How to minimize Final Cut pro with one click?

I know you can minimize windows (canvas, timeline, etc) by pressing Command+M 4 times but how to minimize Final Cut pro with one click?

Hold down the Option key and click the Minimize button on any window, all windows in the app will minimize.
Don't know what or if the reverse of this is - so although it's a one click minimize all windows, I believe you have to re-enlarge them one at a time.

  • Regarding final cut pro and sony camera

    hi,
I have a Sony HDR-CX550/CX550V XR550/XR550V Digital HD Camera Recorder, and I wanted to know if the format that this camera shoots, will it be natively compatible with Final Cut Pro?
I would really appreciate an answer, as I need it asap
    Much thanks

I have the same camera, and I noticed that in Standard Def mode, the Sony HDR-CX550V shoots in MPEG 2 PS (not AVCHD)
    - Can this be natively edited in Final Cut Pro? If so, how?
    - Is this an XDCAM format?
    - If the Sony MPEG-2 PS can't be edited in FCP directly, what's the fastest / most space-efficient way codec for me to translate this to (for example thru mpegstreamclip)?
    Would much appreciate your insights-

  • Importing to final cut express4 with sony sr11

I am using an iMac 10.5.4 which was recently purchased by my school. I also recently purchased a Sony avchd camera and am struggling mightily with the import process. Up until now I have used mini dv tape cameras, firewire and iMovie HD and Final Cut Pro 4 with no problems to speak of. I hook up the new cam with the usb cable, fire up fce4, select log and transfer and nothing happens..at all!!. Yes I read the manual and searched the discussions to no avail. My students and I would be ever grateful if someone could help us.

    Hi,
ok so unless you see the camera connected there is not much you can expect from the Log and transfer.
When you connect the camera to your Mac using the USB cable, checking at the camera's display you should see a message asking you to connect your camera by pushing a button: there will be two buttons, one is for video and the other for photos.
You will have to click the one for videos.
After you have done that, you should see a new USB disk mounted on your desktop, called NO NAME.
Only then you can fire up FCE4 and use the Log and transfer to ingest your AVCHD material.

  • Importing SWF into Final Cut Pro with no Background

    Hi Everyone:
I've created an animated macromedia .swf file and imported
into Final Cut Pro successfully just as an .swf file. I can see the
.swf file animate in Final Cut Pro, the only problem is there is a
white background along with my animation. I've seen many slighly
related threads to this problem, but no end solution or work
around. any help? here's what i've seen in posts and other forums:
    - create another layer below your object and place a
tranparent color swatch box the size of your stage size
    - export the flash file as .mov with an alpha channel
    transparency
    - export the flash file as a .mov with an alpha channel, then
open in quicktime pro, then re export again as a quicktime movie
    with the "Millions +" option.
    - i've also heard something about having the right codecs, or
purchasing some other 3rd part software.
none of these approaches have worked for me. My Dream would
be to just import the .swf file straight into Final Cut Pro. I've
been exporting my flash movies as a png sequence and importing
every image into FCP for the time being. I'm also thinking about
just making the background bright green, because i think i just
chroma key it out, but i'm not sure how clean this will be.
    here's the related thread:

    Thanks for any help.

You need one of these: http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/videoconversion.php to do it properly. The ADVC 300 is the best option for the money.

  • How to use Final Cut pro with external hard drive?

I have too little space on my computer so I have to use final cut pro x with an external hard drive, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in and Final cut going, my computer goes very slow. I just upgraded to 16gb ram... but can't seem to run FCP x while an external hard drive is plugged in. FCP just freezes up and I have to force quit.

    craigbuckley wrote:
all the files and events in final cut are still on my internal, so my internal drive is still full.... Do I have to go and delete everything off my internal?
In addition to the excellent advice to keep your media on an external HDD, you need to make sure that your system (boot) drive has a decent amount of free space if you want to have a satisfactory editing experience. Many people recommend not going below 20% free space. That's especially so for the boot drive, but as you fill up the external, its performance will also slow. Ideally, we would have separate media and backup drives,
You don't need to "delete everything". Rather, you first figure out what needs to be moved. You copy those files to the other drive and then verify that all the files you copied are in two locations. At that point you can delete those files from your boot drive.
    Good luck.

  • Final Cut Pro with OS 10.5.8?

I just downloaded the Final Cut Pro Final (trial) but it says I cannot use "this version of the application.. with this version of Mac OS X". I am using version 10.5.8. Is there a different FCP application that I can download or a Mac OS software update or what exactly do I need to do to run some version of this program?

    Have you tried Software Update?

  • Would I still be able to fun Final Cut Pro with no problem with the new 13"

My old MBP has "NVIDIA GeForce 860M GT with 128MB" and the new 13-inch MBP has "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics" I don't really know what "GT" means, but the more expensive MBP's listed have it, so I'm guessing it's pretty good. I was wondering if I'd still be able to fun Final Cut Pro quickly if I got the new 13-inch MBP.
Back in 2007, the guy at the Apple store said I'd have to get a MBP instead of a MB if I wanted to fun FCP correctly, and now both the MB and MBP use the same graphics chip, so I'm wondering if FCP will still function correctly on the new 13-inch MBP?

    Eric wrote:
Incorrect about what? I never made any statements, just questions. According to the Apple store, the Macbook and 13-inch Macbook Pro both use the same chip, which is the only statement I made. And which is why I'm wondering if the new 13-inch MBP can even handle FCP since the MB can't (according to the guy in the Apple store).
Actually, your original question was formed as part of a statement:
now both the MB and MBP use the same graphics chip, so I'm wondering if FCP will still function >correctly on the new 13-inch MBP?
And that's the part that BoyHowdy pointed out that you are "a little incorrect" about. While it's true that they both have an onboard 9400M graphics chip, you are overlooking the fact that the 15" & 17" MBPs also have the much more powerful and dedicated 9600M GT graphics card. This is not an insignificant difference. Final Cut Pro, not to be confused with Final Cut Express (not you, others have confused the two), requires a dedicated card which the 15" & 17" MBPs have in the form of the additional 9600M GT, but the 13" still lacks.
The specs on the Final Cut Pro page are a little confusing because while it says it *will not work* with integrated graphics, it specifically refers to Intel, and does not mention Nvidia. However, it still says it requires an AGP or PCI Express card, which the 9400M is not.
My feeling is that even if it runs, the performance of Final Cut Pro on that system will be unacceptable, and will ultimately drive you mad. It really pushes the graphics systems hard, and despite their vast improvement over the pathetic Intel onboard graphics systems, the 9400M is still pretty anemic for high end work. You're better off saving a little more money and getting the low end 15" model. Not to mention, the extra screen real estate makes a huge difference with the very crowded Final Cut Pro UI.

  • Can't Find Final Cut Pro with my admin user!

It was there, but I changed the name from the person I bought the macbook15 from and now all the settings and apps are set default.
Is there a way my main account (set to admin) can find Final Cut Pro (and maybe others) to appear on hard drive without having to use the old name and password?
If I create a new user with the name of the original account is simply says "Username already used". In other words, If I am to use the old username, I have to change my main admin account and go through that all over again.
Admin should mean, total control of the computer...
Also does deleting/changing the original user actually delete programs?? It shouldn't, the hard drive files should be left alone. I can't find Final Cut Pro on the drive at all, it seemed to only appear when I'm using the original user name.
    Thoughts....discussions??
I'm using the latest Macbook Pro 15 and updates.

Firewire port is not required to install Final Cut Pro. Take a look at the Final Cut Studio system requirements and cross-reference it with your system specifications to discover what hardware your computer is lacking.

  • Does FInal Cut Pro suports Sony HD Camcorder codecs?

I just got (as a present) a Sony HDR-SR1 AVC HD 30GB Handycam® It records HD to an internal Hard Drive but it uses a AVCHD (HD) codec. How can I edit this footage in Final Cut Pro is this codec supported at all? Thank you!

    For Sony Cameras you mean?
ANY AVCHD camera... Use the Log and Transfer window. Apple just demo'd that here at LAFCPUG. But it doesn't import into the native AVCHD codec...you have to choose between AIC and ProRes 422. ProRes is the better option, but know that you need a two drive firewire Raid, or another internal SATA drive, or an eSATA drive to handle.

  • Final cut pro with imac g5 (older version)

I purchased an imac g5 about a year ago. I've upgraded the RAM to 768 and thats about it. I want to install final cut pro. I know I need to upgrade the RAM to at least 1 gig and get more hard drive space. Is there anything else i should do? Any precautions?
    Thanks!!!!

I had all sorts of problems bus sharing my DV (or HDV) camera with an external FW Drive, although I never tried plugging the camera into the drive itself - but you do have two options:
    1) Capture using the internal drive.
    2) Use a USB2 interface for the external drive.
I found both workable, some people have had trouble with USB2 drives, but I find the interface is faster than the base drive speed for single stream work - your mileage may vary. I am using the Lacie triple interface drive.
Use the system profiler to work out which USB port is not shared with any other, because if you have your mouse / keyboard or Bluetooth adaptor on the same internal hub as the drive, they will all be reduced to USB1.1 - and you definitely can't capture to that. I found one port on the powerbook was on its own bus, one was shared with the BT adaptor - go Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info to run the profiler, or run it from Applications -> Utilities.

  • URGENT Error in Final Cut Pro with Snow Leopard!!

I have discovered a serious flaw with Snow Leopard using Final Cut Pro.
Many of the Live Type Files in my timeline are "Media Missing In Live Type File" when converting to IMX 30MP/ps in Quicktime.
Has anyone else seeing this major problem using Final Cut Pro 6?
Is there a solution to this?
    JKai

I found a way around this problem: Open Live Type then open the troubling Live Type files in your FCP timeline back to it's original format in Live Type - then using the "Render Movie" command (com/R) in Live Type convert the file again. Place it back in the Final Cut Pro timeline. This should prevent "Media Missing File" from omitting your Live Type files when converting your FCP timeline into a Quicktime file in IMX (30mb/s) or NTSV Quicktime formats.

  • Final Cut Pro with a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro

I have an older Power Mac G4 that I have upgraded from 400Mhz to 1.4Ghz and a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card. I recently bought Final Cut Pro 2.0 and do not want to upgrade the video card yet again. Does anyone know of any work around to get Final Cut Pro to work on this computer?
    Details are as follows:
    Error message -
The installed graphics card does not support the OpenGL features recommended by Final Cut Pro.
    ATI Radeon 9000 Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV250
    Type: Display

    Slot: SLOT-A

    ROM# 133-99703-107
    FCode Version 1.87
    NDRV 1.1.0f53
    VRAM 64
Any work around at all would be great. ATI told me to upgrade to 9600 AGP or 9800 AGP. I am not even sure the 9800 AGP will work on this vintage Power Mac.

It looks like http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html you will be able to run the basic Final Cut Pro program but, obviously, its not going to scream. Many of the individual elements of the suite i.e. Motion, Color, are not going to function as they should without a significant boost in several things, memory, processor speed, video card.
In all honesty, you should be running FCP 4.5 or 5.0 which will run very well with your hardware. But since you already have FCS2, (I assume that's what you mean, not really Final Cut 2) hang on to it for when you decide to do what all of us eventually will have to do; buy an Intel based box.
My G5 is fast approaching obsolete, and I'm just waiting for the next version of Final Cut Suite to see how much box I need to go to. Didn't think this time 19 months ago I would be saying that... but time does roll on.
    You'll enjoy FCS2 (FCP6)
