Final Cut Pro X keeps freezing, especially when doing titles

I have been editing on Final Cut Pro X for a few months and last week it suddenly started to freeze each time I tried to edit, especially when I try to write titles. I have spoken to many 'computer' experts none of whom have been able to help.

It's working now, not as fast as before but still working so that's super! Thank you so so much!!!

this is a perfect question to ask the users in the FCP X forum.  Good luck.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x

  • Final Cut Pro X Keeps Freezing Up

I'm running a new late 2013 Mac Pro with Final Cut Pro X, OSX 10.9.3, a 4TB Lacie Thunderbolt and a 2 TB Lacie Rugged.
I'm wrapping up a documentary and I have not had any problems with FCP X freezing up until now that I'm using Film Convert to color grade and color correct my doc.
The cameras included in this are a GoPro Hero 3, a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera, a GH4 (slow motion in camera) and a dji phantom quadcopter. FCP X is still frozen as we speak. I keep having to force quit and reopen in order to work on the project further. Does anybody know what might be causing FCP X to freeze?
Thank you all for your time.
    Trey

I don't think memory is the cause of the freezes, If you had a memory leak, it would be likely that everything you did on the MP would just get progressively slower. Also, I recall someone else who was having some difficulties with FilmConvert and FCP X. It may have been this thread.

  • Final Cut Pro X keeps freezing?

Every time I open it up it takes minutes to open, and lags crazily. I can't work with it anymore and it also lags my computer until I close it... Should I delete it and then reinstall it - And is there someway I can move all my files and projects into the newly downloaded FCPX? Thanks.
Oh and I have the late 2012 MBP

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Final Cut Pro x Keeps Freezing. Help

I am trying to edit one of my short films, and every time I press play (or press space bar) it freezes, and I end up having to force quit the aplication. Every now and then it will play, but eventualy it will freeze up again. I have already tried restarting my computer, please help

You'll have to give complete specs of your computer and drives and if the media you're using? Does this happen in the event browser or the project? What are the project properties?

  • Final cut pro x kip freezing

My final cut pro x keep freezing?

    A few general  FCP X trouble-shooting suggestions.
Use this app to trash the preferences.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
It should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
Check you have plenty of space on your hard drive ……  ideally you should have a separate one for video files.
    Shutdown all other apps.
If you have a problem simply opening FCP X, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.
These 3 links contain more detailed info on troubleshooting FCP X problems.

  • Final cut pro x keeps on saying files are full when trying to export when their not ?

    Hi
Final cut pro x keeps on saying files are full when i'm trying to export when they are not full and also what setting do i export them on for a small quicktime?

The preset that will give you the smallest file is email and you will have 3 choices of size. Not sure what you consider small, but also take a look at Apple Device.
Your error message is Files are Full or DIsk is Full? Will need more info about your system specs, the format of the clips you're using and your project settings.

  • Can I migrate an iMovie project to final cut pro and keep the edits intact?

can I migrate an iMovie project to final cut pro and keep the edits intact? It may be a solution to my apparently corrupted iMovie

    The manual tells ..
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/?lang=en#ver41812c7c
keep in mind: just the 'plain cuts', not the eye-candy iMovie offers, wil be transfered.
    unfortunately it says ...:
You initiate the process from within iMovie. The project file and the media used in the project are copied to your Final Cut Pro library.
For more information, see iMovie Help.
so, if your iM doesn't work anymore, you can not transfer.
plus, my personal opinion!, I would start from scratch in FCPx...
What issues in iM do you expect FCPX to solve,...?

  • When opening Final Cut Pro it keeps getting stuck with the loading circle and I have to force the quit so please help?

I have a Macbook Air, still fairly new from July 4, 2014. Yesterday, I was editing some footage in Final Cut Pro, and the colored spinning circle kept popping up. I continuously forced the quit, as I couldn't do anything, and then I restarted and looked for updates (though there was none). I then deleted the app and reinstalled it, but it's still giving me the same problem. This morning, I created a new user account, and Final Cut Pro works on that account, but it took some time to find the exported video (I actually had to turn it off and turn it back on to find the video). Later today, I went onto the main account, where Final Cut Pro isn't working, and it's still giving me trouble, and then the Picture Preview program got stuck, as well, twice, where I had to also force it to quit. What's happening? How do I fix this problem?

The info given below might help but if it doesn't, I'm sure other people will give you useful suggestions.
Corrupt preferences can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be one of the first things you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.

  • Getting error message in Final Cut Pro X for frame 13142 when sharing

I am sharing a project to Master File and I get an error message: error occured when creating frame 13142.  How can I find that frame?

I had frame generation error last nigtht trying to make master file  on a short 5 mintue simple video I built.
It said error was on frame 6797.
I seach for soluitons and nothing seem to help.
I tried copying project contents to new project and that still failed with frame error 6797.
I then reviewed that frame and it was the one time in project I used any special affects for movement of image, Ken Burns and  Key frame transform affects on a freeze frame image.
I createa new third project copied contents in and remove the freeze frame image.  added freeze frame image back into project and only did Ken Burnes affect without key frame movement.
i was then able to complete geneeation and share project.
So if you get a frame generation error check that frame and see what special affects your using.  There maybe a bug in FInal Cut Pro X when you mix and match affects on one object in a project.
hope this helps someone... I was stuck for several hours on this last night.

  • Final Cut Pro X Keeps Crashing - Have tried lots of things

    Hi there,
Final Cut Pro Keeps Crashing on me.
I've tried repairing the permissions on my drive , I've also tried logging in as a different user.
I've also instead of trying to import from an external drive - copied the files directly onto my MAC HD and imported from there - but it contiually crashes.
    Any ideas?
    thanks for your help

    What is your system configuration?
Where do you keep FCOX events and projects?
What kind of media are in your projects?
What are you typically doing when FCP crashes?

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 crashes when using QuickTime conversion export

Our copy of Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 has started to crash when exporting using QuickTime Conversion. It gets about 66% complete, then dumps out. I have updated FCP using Software Update and QT to the latest version. Any ideas why this happening? Pro Kit 4.5 installed. QuickTime Pro 7.4.5
My previous post had the wrong version of FCP. Dyslexia sets in.

    Erik:
quite often during render I get the error messages "The specific file is in use by another application"
    Check this Apple doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302790
I think that was solved with 10.4.10.
About the crash problem, you would post the system configuration of that computer.
    Hope that helps !

  • Final Cut Pro X keeps crashing on opening

I have a 9 hours video opened up in the program so everytime i try to open Final Cut Pro X, it crashes. I have tried restarting, etc, but it keeps doing it! i really need to finish this video but i can't seem to even be able to open it. Please dont use technical words because i am still new to this software. ANY HELP IS APRECIATED!!!

First trash your preferences. Use Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion. Next, unmounting the drive that holds the events and projects as see if the application will open. Next, hide the Final Cut Projects folder and see if the Events folder will mount by itself.
