Final Cut Pro X project timeline vanished from project window.

I'm using Final Cut Pro X on my Intel based iMac running Snow Leopard. I was trimming a video file in the project timeline when the timeline vanished. The project window is there but the timeline is gone in all projects. Any ideas?

Same thing just happened to me, I can preveiw the project still, and no it is not a matter of zooming out. There is no enter full screen option in snow leapord. This is a huge issue and needs to be addressed ASAP!
The affected project is the music video, you can see that it is completely grey.
This is what it looks like when you open the project, no timeline. Just a grey area.

  • Every time I import an .fcpxml file into Final Cut Pro X, the timeline doesn't get imported

So I had exported an .fcpxml file from one machine, which i had to format. So, after formatting the machine, each time I import the .fcpxml file into Final Cut Pro X, The timeline remains empty

Use MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free software) to convert the media to something like ProRes 422, then import into FCP X.
MPEG Streamclip can cope with many codecs.

  • Video walkthrough online for Final Cut Pro X when approaching it from a Never Been Used Before scenario?

    Hi there
I've used iMovie a few times and been quiet successful with it, but I was thinking of getting Final Cut Pro X as I want to do some more advanced video editing now (I really dont know the terms for what I want to be able to do are, but things like be able to stack say 10 different camera angles up on top of each other and decide which part of each one I want to use).
My problem is that I cant find many videos online (youtube etc) if I were to approach it as if I've never used it before.
Most of them go on about how things have changed from one version to the next and whats new in this edition.
I dont want WHATS NEW though, I want WHAT IT CAN DO.
So some kind of walkthrough (It can be an 90 minutewalk plus through for all I care) that shows off most of the things you can do with it.
    Any suggestions of ACTUAL links?
    Thanks in advance.

What you described isn't really multi-cam editing.
I think FCP X is idea for what you want because you can AUDITION as many clips as you want then you simply select this or that angle and play it through in the timeline - it's a fabulous feature in FCP X.
I strongly recommend you watch some good (PROPER) tutorials on FCP X.
I've tried a number of FCP X Tutorials and in my experience, Ripple Trainingis clearly the best.
There is a small fee, but it's more than worth it.
I just read your follow-up post.

  • Is there a way make Final Cut Pro X NOT open every event/project I have worked on at open?

I will admit, I am quite new to Final Cut Pro X, but have been a FCP user for years - this version is like learning to walk all over again.
Everytime I open FCP X, it loads every event/project I have ever worked on, and it takes a looooong time.  Is there a way to have it open blank and then let me open only the Events I wish to work with?

Event Manager is only $4.99 but if you don't mind doing it manually, it will cost you nothing.
This Apple help article tells you how to hide the Projects and Events you don't want opening in FCP X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4740
As usual it makes it sound quite complex but all it involves is making 2 folders which you name Final Cut Events - Hidden  and Final Cut Projects - Hidden and dragging the project and event folders you don't want into them. (The exact name of the folders is not critical so you can choose your own if you wish).
When you want to see them again you drag them back into the original folders.
You should move the folders with FCP X shutdown.

  • Is there any other way to buy pro apps like logic pro x or final cut pro x without downloading straight from the internet?

    Hi,
Just straigt to the issue, I'm not really sure with my internet connection in my country. I mean its so slow and sometimes it disconnects and reconnect. So I'm not trusting the internet connection here to download such a big software like Logic Pro x or Final Cut Pro x. So is there any way for me to buy the pro apps without downloading straight from the internet? I mean like the oldschool method, come with a box. I bought Logic pro 7 and 8 like that and has no problem with it. But now apple selling all the pro apps from the app store, its cool and easy but im afraid if i bought it online and im pretty sure i will encounter problems during the download period. It might took me like a week or more maybe to download 40GB file, i dont know. And more over, what if my internet connection cut off while i download the software?
So please do help me with this. I would love to have Logic Pro X on my apple computer.
    Thanks.

And to my knowledge I can't sort of 'drag and drop' the clips from the sealed Final Cut event files either.
The events are not "sealed". Your clips – if you copied rather than leaving in place  – are in the Original Media folder. If you used 10.1.x, you right click on the library bundle and choose Show Package Contents. In early versions, just open the event folder.
There are multiple ways to get media on ones' computer. One way is to use a card reader and copy the entire card structure to whatever destination is used for a media drive. Then import into the NLE.
I don't have any experience with Hitfilm but I assume their user forums would be a good place to get an understanding of what workflows work best for that application.
    Good luck.

  • Final Cut Pro X folders to exclude from backups?

I'm trying to get to the list of files/folders created by Final Cut to exclude from offsite backup.  Basically, anything extremely large that can be easilly re-generated.    Especially things that Final Cut should regenerate on its own if it is missing.  The reason for excluding is not space, it's the backup speed.  I'm not shipping physical disks back and forth, I'm transferring bytes over network.  I do want to backup my original files, but things that smell like Final Cut will simply regenerate if missing, I want to exclude if they are huge or temporary in nature.
    So far my list contains:
    Final Cut Events/*/Render Files
    Final Cut Events/*/Transcoded Media
    Final Cut Projects/*/Render Files
These sound like things that Final Cut might easilly regenerate from orginal media files.  Am I right or wrong?  Anything additional to add to this list?
The reason for this is that while working with Final Cut, it will generate tons of temporary files.  E.g. I have one project where only "Transcoded Media" is on the order of 200GB.  These take days to be transferred to offsite backup, and it's something that Final Cut should easilly regenerate from original media files (will it is another question).  Some of these can be deleted from disk by Final Cut itself (e.g. by selecting Delete Project/Event Render Files, and docs seem to indicate Final Cut will regenerate these if needed, unless I'm wrong here).

  • Transfer Final Cut Pro X to new desktop from laptop

I just purchased a new iMac desktop and want to transfer Final Cut Pro X from my macbook pro to my new computer. I know the license allows for me to use the software on both my laptob and my desktop, but am unsure on how to actually implement this. I downloaded the software dirctly form the apple store online, thus do not have installation cds. Help please!

    Simply copy it across  .  .  .  .  that's all.
You can use a hard drive, a memory stick or if they are both on a network you can send it that way.

  • Does anyone know how to get final cut pro 10.0.8 (downgraded from Mavericks)

I have down graded from Mavericks as I don't have the 2k needed to upgrade all my other apps I need a copy of final cut pro 10.0.8, any ideas?

The problem as stated was difficult to understand so I tried to help out with the part that appeared (to me) to be caused by a lack of space.
"I don't have the 2k needed to upgrade all my other apps"
Never heard of the expression about 2k and still don't understand what it means. Is that 2k of English pounds or maybe 2k pounds of flesh?
For what it's worth, in 1968 I was doing Fortran programming on an IBM computer that had 2K of memory. The computer room was the size of a large living room and we had two card key punch machines, a 120 "line printer" (printed a whole paper-width line at one time), a CalCom half-step plotter (wrote graphics programs for that), and a computer console, probably around 4 to 5 feet wide with rows of red lights. One had to read what was happening in hexadecimal code.
The programs I wrote were in Fortran and were for transportation planning and the Transportation Engineers. The graphics programs were for Travel Time and Delay Studies and the output was on about 30 or 36-inch wide paper and included things like Average Speed, Running Speed, Stop Delay Time, Percentage of time Stopped, Coefficient of Variation, Standard Deviation, etc. Rand these for AM Peak, PM Peak, Off Peak, and for each direction.
Back then an Engineer typically used a slide rule and if they were lucky they had a simple desktop Calculator that did add, subtract, multiply, divide, and had glowing wire numbers about 3/4" high would cost somewhere around $500. I don't think gas cost even 30 cents a gallon at the time. The venerable HP 35 calculator didn't come out until later. I wanted one but then they came out with the 45 and finally the Commodore 64 came out. Got one of those and wrote a lot of Basic programs for business.
As for the 10.0.8, I do have a backup of that although I'll probably delete it now.

  • Final Cut Pro X will not export my project - error 1

    Hello everyone,
So Final Cut is giving me a hard time. I have a project about 15mins long that I would like to export as a master file and it just doesn't want to work. When I first finished and tried to export, I was using verison 10.0.8. I would select master file for the export and it would just sit there, stuck on 0%. I then realized that I needed to update. I updated to 10.0.9 and tried to do the same thing again - no luck. Next, I closed final cut and trashed preferences. I then opened up and tried exporting again, same thing happened, stuck on 0%. Then I closed again and trashed preferences again. I opened final cut, turned off background rendering, and trashed project render files and event render files (as was suggested in another discussion for export problems). After doing that, I again tried to export - still nothing. At this point of course, I had trashed the render files, so I figured I should just let the project render again. I turned background rendering back on and opened my project - now it would not render! It was stuck on 0%! Okay so I closed and reopened again. I first tried to copy my whole project into a new project and try letting it render that way - nope, didn't work. So I closed and opened again. I turned off background rendering and started a new project. I pasted just a section of my video into the new project and manually rendered that section, which worked. So I pasted the rest of the video (in chunks) into the new project, manually rendering chunk by chunk. Finally I had my whole project again, and the whole thing was rendered. I tried exporting again and got the error 1 message, "The operation could not be completed because an error occurred when creating frame 373 (error -1).". This is my current state of affairs, and its driving me crazy. I just want to export my project!
    Please help....Thanks

Thank you. I found it now. This is a location where I did not expect this. I tried to do this using the GUI elements controlling how clips are displayed in the time line. I also was looking for a context menu item on the clip. I did not expect it in the preferences.

  • Upgraded final cut pro 10.1.4 all my projects disappeared

I can't get any of my projects to appear in final cut - extremely frustrating. I can't get any of the files to open. Where is everything?

I upgraded from an early version of Final Cut 10 - from 2 years ago. I just had to rebuild my computer due to a drive that went down. When I downloaded the software, it asked about updating files. I said yes but I didn't have all the drives online so it couldn't do it for all the files and I had to say that I would do manually later. So when final cut opened, none of my projects were there. When I go to file/open/library/other, there are no files with that purple library icon. I can see the folders with the events and projects but it can't open anything.

  • Final Cut Pro 10.1 crashed and my project is gone.

When I updated last week to version 10.1, I created a new library for a new series of videos I'd be making. I was working on the first one today, when all of a sudden Final Cut crashed. I reopened and the new library I created is gone and so is the project I've been working on all day.
Whenever the last version of Final Cut crashed, it always opened back up to my current project without losing any changes. Why has all my work disappeared now? Is there any place I might look to find it?
I just with there were a program with all the features of Final Cut without any of the bugs or issues. I'm getting tired of working overtime to deal with software issues.

Does anyone know where FCP hides it's clips?
Actually, the media should still be in a location that you specified. If you originally imported directly from the camera into FCPX, it will be in an event. If you originally copied your media to your Mac, it will be at that location unless you moved it; it may also live in your event – depending on whether you chose to copy the media to your event.
If you select a clip that has a missing clip warning in the browser and then File>Relink Files, it will give you a dialog so you can navigate to that location.
BTW, what version of FCPX are you using and caused you go from Premiere to Final Cut in the first place?

  • Exporting HD video clips from Final Cut Pro in a format readable from IPad

There are many ways to convert mp4 formatted videos into a file that can be sent to IPad via Itune and be read by IPad. However, my problem is that my videos are in a format 16 x 9 and the IPad screen is near 4 x 3 format and the pictures of my videos are squeezed horizontally.
Which application could help me creating a letter box stype with black bands on top and bottom of the IPad screen so that I can have my 16 x 9 dimension of the picture kept correctly?

Whatever your output from Final Cut, if you open in Quicktime and export or share and select Apple TV (iPad), your video shouldl be exported in a format playable on iPad.
